Born in Utrecht, The Netherlands on November 27, 1923, Corrie endured her mother's early death (1928), the Depression, and the food shortages and Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. At the end of the War she volunteered to help war-torn families in Arnhem, before going to Amsterdam for her nurse's training. She worked as a Registered Nurse caring for children and war veterans in Amsterdam and then in London, England. In 1957 she came to Canada, working at the hospitals in Scarborough, Ajax-Pickering, and Oshawa and finally at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. She was a good mother, raising her 3 daughters, supporting them through university, and helping to build a family cottage at Lake St. Peter.
She loved to paint, and write, and was a frequent contributor to the Oshawa Times' "Poet's Corner". Upon retiring, she volunteered at the Distress Centre. She was a warm, compassionate person whose door was always open for tea and encouragement. She was deeply concerned about world affairs, the environment, social justice, and the humane treatment of animals. Among those she admired were Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Sidney Poitier, and Victor Borge. She enjoyed cigarettes, cheering for the underdog, libraries, crying over obituaries, multicultural television, music of all kinds, and she loved to tell stories.
A long-time Oshawa resident, who survived bipolar disorder, osteoarthritis, breast cancer and diabetes, Corrie became bedridden in the last year of her life and moved to Orono to live with her daughter Sue and son-in-law Ralph. She gracefully accepted from others the compassion and understanding she had always preached. Her life was often difficult, and at times turbulent, nonetheless she was loving and she was well loved.
