OTTO, Gordon Carl March 30, 1928 - December 9, 2003 On Tuesday, December 9, 2003, Gordon Otto died peacefully after a long battle with Leukemia at the age of 75 years. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 51 years, Adeline; son, Bruce (Agnes); daughter, Charlene (Ken) Dunlop-Lura; grandchildren, Carl (Beverly), Pauline (Mark) Gurnett, Peter (fiancee Shannon), Gordon, Amanda Lura, Kristopher Dunlop, Mika Dunlop, Danelle Lura; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Rebekah, Ashley; brothers and sisters, Vernice (Dave) Eveneshen, Donny (Jean) Rowley, Bill (Sharon) Rowley, Lynn (Jim) Vegso, Lorne Rowley; brother-in-law, Jack Weaver. Predeceased by his parents; sister, Della Weaver; sister, Florence Eveneshen. SACKNEA, Frances Lily (Fran) On Tuesday, December 9, 2003 Fran Sacknea of Edmonton, passed away at the age of 77 years. Fran is survived by her loving family, four daughters, Linda Lindbeck, Judy (Albert) Fidler, Brenda (Rory) Scatterty and Pam Sacknea; six grandchildren, Jason and Darren Lindbeck, Allen, Randy, Kale and Ceara Scatterty; as well as one brother and two sisters. Fran was predeceased by her husband, John. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the Edmonton General Hospital Chapel, 11111 Jasper Avenue. SALVESON, Solvei Bergit On December 9, 2003 Solvei Bergit Salveson of Viking passed away at the age of 89 years. She is lovingly remembered by her nephews and nieces, Gerald (Muriel) Walker, Gladys (Gary) Johnson, Marie Oakford, Larry (Lorraine) Langager, her great-nephews and nieces Graham, Michelle, Kimberly, Kelsey, Darren (Kim), Shane (Donna), Scott, Ross and Joelle and many friends. She was predeceased by her two sisters Margaret Walker and Glenda Langager. SCOTT, Linda Mary On Monday, December 8, 2003 Mrs. Linda Scott passed away at the age of 57 years. SHAW, Flore Mrs. Flore Shaw, long time resident of Berwyn, Alberta passed away in Peace River on December 7, 2003 at the age of 93 years. She was predeceased by her husband, David. Funeral Services will be held from the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Grimshaw on Monday, December 15, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Charles Lavoie, celebrant. ASH, Gordon Thomas Mr. Gordon Ash, born December 22, 1919, in Perryvale, Alberta, passed away on April 28, 2004 at the age of 84 years. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Ina; his youngest brother, Harvey; sister-in-law, Amy; and great nephew, Gregory. He is survived by his brother Melvin, with whom he lived and worked with for many years in the poultry business on the acreage north of Edmonton purchased by their father in 1930. In the late 1970's when Edmonton's boundaries expanded, Ash Bros. acreage became part of Castledowns. Gordon was a second father to Melvin's five children, Marlene, Pat, Dwayne, Randy, and Gaile; as well as a respected uncle to Harvey's children, Vicki, Connie, Gary, and Dianne; who grew up a half mile south of Ash Bros., he is also survived by, Harvey's wife, Mary; twelve great-nieces and nephews; one step-niece; and five great-great nieces and nephews complete Gordon's extended family. Gordon was a quiet-spoken gentleman. His work ethic and easy sense of humor endeared him to his family. In his retirement, he spent many pleasurable hours gardening and was an active member of the Namao seniors' organization. Gordon was keenly interested in the development of the younger members. Gordon will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from the St. Albert Funeral Home, St. Vital Avenue and St. Albert Trail. Cremation to follow. BARNETT, Esther W. On April 28, 2004, Mrs. Esther Barnett passed away peacefully at the age of 92 years. Esther is survived by her son Rick of Edmonton, sister-in-law Bubbles Gowanlock and special niece Wendy Hopper both of Vegreville and sister-in-law Mary Barnett of Calgary. Esther is also survived by four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, family and friends. Esther was predeceased by her husband Stanley, by her son Tim, by her parents, by two sisters and by one brother-in-law. BIRNIE, Douglas On April 17, 2004 Doug Birnie passed away suddenly. Doug is survived by his children, Tanya and Jason; one grandson, Tyson; his parents, Ed and Jean; his sisters, Natalie, Alanna (Kim), and Diana (Dallas); his grandmother, Sylvia; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. BRODIE, William January 31, 1914 - April 26, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Brodie on April 26, 2004. His family was at his side. Bill was born and raised in Edmonton where he trained as a watchmaker and jeweller. After serving in the RCAF during World War II, he started his own business, "Brodie's Jewellery", on 118 Avenue. He took great pride in his work, but his real enjoyment was in the many friends and customers who stopped by for coffee and lively discussions on a daily basis. He retired from work in 1979 but remained very active. An avid outdoorsman and notorious walker, Bill experienced many adventures and misadventures in his impromptu travels. He was a longtime Mason and past master of Dominion Lodge #117 as well as part worthy patron of the Eastern Star. Bill will be greatly missed and always remembered by his cherished wife of 64 years, Mary, sons George (Joanne) of Edmonton, Alex (Jana) of White Rock B.C., Bob (Claire Ann) of Kamloops, B.C., and Scott (Leigh) of Vancouver, B.C., his sister Nessie Buss, six granddaughters and four and a half great-grandchildren. BRUENS, ROBERT {BOB} On Tuesday April 27, 2004 Bob Bruens of St. Albert passed away at the age of 62 years. He is survived by his loving wife Edith, sons Kelly and William; step-children Douglas (Bernice), Donna (Brian), Danny (Shelly), Denise (Tim), Tammy (Vern), Darcy, Dianna (Gerry); ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sisters Elsie, Olive, Audrey, Margaret, brothers; George and Bill, as well as his sister-in-law Leona and numerous other family and friends. CRANSTON, John (Jack) On Tuesday, April 27, 2004 Mr. Jack Cranston of Edmonton passed away at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; brother, Cliff of Winnipeg, MB and sister, Ruth Forster of Brandon, MB. He is predeceased by sisters, Edith, Ilene, Marion, Carmen, Margaret, Gail; and brothers, Boyne, Hewitt, George, and Clayton. Jack grew up on the family farm outside Brandon, Manitoba and attended school in Brandon. Jack and Ruth were married in Edmonton on July 29, 1950 and spent their married life here in Edmonton. Jack started with Independant Biscuit Company in 1945 and later worked at International Harvester until his retirement. He was known as an honest and diligent worker and friend to all. He was a charter member of North West Commercial Travellers' Association of Canada. BAGDAN, Damian David July 13, 1966 - July 31, 2004 Damian passed away peacefully at his home in Vancouver. He was born in Edmonton and attended his neighbourhood Belgravia Elementary School, Grandview Jr. High and Old Scona. He then studied at Harvard before moving to Toronto and finally to Vancouver. Damian is survived by his loving mother, Donna Bagdan of Edmonton, his brothers, Galen (Alejandra) of Toronto and Brennan of Edmonton, his father, Alfred Bagdan (Catherine) and their daughters, Mariel and Kara of St Albert. Damian had a marvellous way of bringing out the best in others. Damian showed genuine warmth and love, was thoughtful and generous. All who knew him will keenly miss his good humour, wit, intelligence and generous spirit. The family sincerely thanks Ian M. Thom, Dr. Joss de Wet and the staff at St Paul's Hospital for the fabulous support given to Damian during his illness. BELCOURT, Barkley Jason Barkley Jason Belcourt of Cold Lake, Alberta passed away July 30, 2004 after a valiant fight with cancer at age 35. BREITKREUZ, Otto On July 31, 2004, Otto Breitkreuz of Edmonton, went to be with the Lord at the age of 82, after a short illness. Otto is survived by Martha, his wife of 58 years, son Ed (Elaine), daughter Marlene (John), daughter Shirley, son Bruce, son Alan (Monica); eight grand-children, three great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends. Otto was predeceased by his parents, four brothers and one sister. CHAPPEL, Mabel Nix Mabel Nix Chappel, age 100, died March 5, 2004 in Ojai, California, of natural causes. Mrs. Chappel was daughter of Edward and Edna Nix, citizens of Edmonton for many years. She was born December 10, 1903, in Oklahoma and moved with her family as a child to Edmonton, where she was educated. Graduating from the University of Alberta in 1927, Mrs. Chappel was a high school English teacher for 25 years. Before moving to the United States with her husband, Nelson Chappel, she was an active member of Wesley United Church. She was a great reader and did wonderful hand work. She is survived by son John N. Chappel, of Reno, NV; daughter Ruth Sayre of Ojai, CA; daughter Lynn Gaaserud of Falls Church, VA; brothers Charles, Nelson and Ernest Nix, all of Canada; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Nelson Chappel, daughter Sheila Chappel, parents Edward and Edna Nix, brother Harold Nix and sister Charlotte Nix. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2004, at the Edmonton Cemetery at 107th Avenue and 120th Street with Reverend Aubrey Edworthy officiating. CONNELLY, Dennis and Dixie Both passed away suddenly of heart failure at their residence in Salmon Arm, BC on Thursday, July 29, 2004. They will be lovingly remembered by their two children Derick and Deanna of Salmon Arm. Dennis and Dixie had owned the Hummingbird Resort on Mara Lake for 17 years and had recently retired and were pursuing their retirement dreams in their new home in Salmon Arm. Dennis was also pursuing his passion of woodworking and gardening; while Dixie was always trying to improve her already perfect recipes and making her home comfortable for her family. Dixie Lee Connelly (Vanderwell) was born in Edmonton, AB on August 28, 1948. She was predeceased by her parents, Dick and Agnes Vanderwell and her brother, Jerry. She is survived by her brother, Richard (Jeanie) and sister, Theresa (Ken) Albrecht and sister-in-law, Irene. Dennis Wayne Eric Connelly was born in Calgary, AB on June 6, 1946. He was predeceased by his father, LeRoy. He is survived by his mother, Loraine and brothers, Tom (Debbie), Pat (Anna), Rod (Karen) and his sister, Janet. A celebration of Dennis's and Dixie's lives will be held from the Holiday Inn Express, Salmon Arm on Friday, August 6 at 1:00 p.m. If so desired, Derick and Deanna would appreciate donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Box 1141, Salmon Arm, BC V1E 4P3. CRUTHERS, Gertrude Evelyn July 17, 1914 - August 1, 2004 It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother and grandmother. Born in Melville, Saskatchewan her family relocated to Edson, Alberta and then Edmonton. Gertrude married Robert on June 19, 1937 and they continued to live in Edmonton and raise their family. Gertrude is survived by her daughter Sharon; son Errol; and grandson Shaughn Cruthers, all of Edmonton. Gertude was predeceased by her husband Robert; parents Peter and Julia Eplett; sisters Ella Price and Helen Weiss. The family would like to thank Doctors, nurses and staff at the Norwood Palliative Facility for their care and kindness. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Gertrude's favourite charity, the Edmonton SPCA or the Cross Cancer Institute or, to a favourite charity. CUMMINGS, Donald Alexander September 29, 1934 - August 2, 2004 In loving memory of our dear husband, father, and grampa, Don Cummings, who passed away on August 2, 2004.
