BETZGA (Boyd), Mary Catherine "Minnie" - 90, Cribbons Point, Antigonish Co., passed away October 5, 1999, in the St. Mary's Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke. Born in Cribbons Point, she was a daughter of the late Angus R. and Catherine (MacGillivray) Boyd. She worked for many years in the United States and then retired home to Cribbons Point. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Willard; sisters, Anna, Betty, Kate, Mary; brothers, Ronald, Doug, Danny Angus, Jack, Andrew, Hugh, Allan, Shaw, Alex, Fred. Funeral 10:30 a.m. today in St. Columba Parish, Lakevale, Rev. John Barry officiating. Burial in parish Cemetery.

BRANSTON, F. Doreen - 68, Kentville, passed away October 4, 1999, in the Valley Regional Hospital Kentville, surrounded by her family. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Mildred (Manthorne) Boggs. She graduated from Mack Business College in 1951 and was employed at Hiltz Dry Goods, Kentville 1970-1997. She was a member of St. Eulalie Rebekah Lodge, Kentville, for 27 years and was a past noble grand. She also served as warden and chaplain for several years. She was an avid bridge player, loved crosswords and handy work. She was a loving, caring, understanding and super nanny. She was a member of the Kentville United Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School. She is survived by daughters, Susan (Mrs. Randy Farris), Kentville; Brenda Branston, Beeton, Ont.; Lorraine (Mrs. Kevin Higgins), Centreville; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by brothers, Lawrence Boggs and Hugh Bauld. Funeral service will be 3:30 today in the Kentville United Baptist Church, Rev. Philip Griffin-Allwood and Rev. Judith Gates officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Donations inmemory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Ileitis and Colitis Foundation.

COVEY, Minnie Laura - 79, Greenwich, Kings County, NS, passed away October 4, 1999 at home. Born in Falmouth, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Minnie (Houghton) MacDonald. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving is a son William (Bill) Waterville; daughter, Donna Phillips, Canning; step-daughters Brenda Collings, Meteghan; Edith Blaine, Manitoba; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Murray Covey; brothers, Charles, James, Allen and William; sisters, Dora, Ethel, Edith, Margaret, Florence and Georgina. COYLE, (Veinotte) Carolyn Jean - 59, of Brock St., Dartmouth, passed away October 5, 1999 in the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Born in East Dalhousie, NS, she was a daughter of Ronald and Lucy (Illsley) Veinotte. She was employed for many years in the financial industry with the Bank of Montreal, and Eastern Canada Savings & Loan Company and it's successors, at the time of her illness she was emplyed in the home heat division of Ultramar Canada Ltd. She is survived by her husband Charles, her mother, Mrs. Lucy Harris of Truro, and her father Ronald Veinotte of Ontario. She was predeceased by her brother Lorimer Veinotte. Visiting will be 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. today, in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St. Funeral service wil be 10 a.m. Friday in South End Baptist Church (Hastings Dr. Dartmouth) Rev. Charles Hudson, officiating. Burial will follow in Oakridge Cemetery, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

DANIELS, Margaret Ann - 95, Shubenacadie, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends at the home of her daughter Sharon in Upper Nine Mile River. Born in MacPhee's Corner, she was a daughter of the late James and Eveline (Hennigar) MacPhee. She was a lifelong resident of Mill Village where she was a homemaker and foster mother to many children. She was a member of Shubenacadie United Church. Surviving are son, Ross (Marilyn), Wellington; daughters, Sharon (Lealon) MacPhee, Upper Nine Mile River; Ruth (Don) Wier, Sackville, NS; foster son Lee (Geraldine) MacCulloch, Central North River, daughter in law Joan Daniels, Dartmouth; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur, son, Phillip; brothers, Alden, Harold, Peter, Albert; sisters, Georgie, Ethel, Cassie, Sadie, Grace, Esther, Laura. Funeral services will be held Thursday, at Ettinger Funeral Home, Rev. Margie Whynot and Rev. Eric Bacon officiating. Burial to follow in Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village. DENHERTOG, Adrianus Cornelis "Adrian" - Nine Mile River, passed away after a brave struggle with cancer. He was attended at bedside by his wife Johanna; daughters, Hendrika and Patricia; and sister-in-law, Helena Dill. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was born in Leiden, the Netherlands, August 5, 1927. He had served as a member of the Royal Dutch Marine (Debi Corps). Adrian and his wife, Johanna emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada in May 1956 and settled in Nova Scotia. Over the years, Adrian was an active member of the Nova Scotia landscaping and gardening community. He worked for Mount Saint Vincent, and subsequently was Superintendent of Parks for the City of Dartmouth for 15 years. At home he and Joan operated a flower garden from which he marketed cut flowers at the Halifax Farmer's Market for many years. He is survived by his wife, Johanna (Bakker); daughters, Hendrika Brown and husband Eric, Yellowknife, NWT; Patricia Perkins and husband Edward, Provost, Alta.; and son William Denhertog and wife Elaine, Vancouver BC; grandchildren, Michael Brown and David, Alison and Benjamin Perkins. He is survived in the Netherlands by his brothers, Nico, Henk, and Kees; nieces, Ineke den Hertog, Johanna Steadman; Charlene Graves, Marie Kennie; He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Joanna Perkins; his sister, Bertha Ruben (South Africa) and nephew, Rob den Hertog (Netherlands). A celebration of his life will be held at the Nine Mile River Community Hall from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 1999. His ashes will be interred beside his granddaughter in a service in Chauvin, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Grace Foundation or a children's charity. GARAGAN, Leo D. - 73, Halifax, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at home. Born July 8, 1926, in Halifax, he was a son of the late Frederick W. and Louise (Wilson) Garagan. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed bowling. Surviving are brothers, Timothy, Michael, Halifax; Lawrence, of Burton, New Brunswick; Brian, Winnipeg. He was predeceased by brothers, Edward, Patrick, Joseph, Dennis, Terence, Sean and Peter. His remains have been donated to Dalhousie Medical School. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. GAUDET, Brian Gerard - 55, Bedford, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at home. Born in New Glasgow he was the son of the late Raymond G. and Katherine (Muldoon) Gaudet. He was employed with Air Canada, Passenger Sales & Service for 33 years, Chairperson for the local district 500 of the CAW and a member of th Cobequid Curling Club for the past 10 years. He enjoyed sports, in particular fishing and golf. He is survived by his wife the former Ruth Snow, a son Christopher Brian, at home; daughters Katherine Maria "Katie", Patricia Ann "Patty-Ann" both at home; mother during his life Marguerite (Wall) Gaudet, Sydney; sisters, Donna Innes, Woodstock, Ont.; Diane Burke and Raylene Constantino both of Sydney. Predeceased by a brother in infancy. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Ignatius Church, Bedford with Father David MacDonald officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the QEII Health Science Centre, Palliative Care Unit.

GILLIS, Harold Chester - 79, Little Dover, formerly of Rocky Bay, passed away October 4, 1999, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Rocky Bay he was a son of the late Lauchie and Clara (Kehoe) Gillis. He was employed as a crane operator in the lumber industry in Boston for 32 years. She was a member of St. Agnes Church, Little Dover Place. Surviving are daughter, Michelle Geist, Newton, Mass; son Harold, Long Beach, California; common-law wife, Louis Harnish; four grandchildren. HADLEY, Annie Jane - 96, Sherbrooke Nursing Home, formerly of Lower South River passed away October 5, 1999, at home. Born in Giants Lake, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Annie (Sullivan) MacNeil. She was employed as a housekeeper for priests in Guysborough, Antigonish and Cape Breton for many years. She was a member of St. Andrew's CWL, the Ladies Aid of Guysborough, and the Greenwold Go-Getters Club. She had a great love of Traditional Music, and was an avid bingo and card player. Surviving are sisters, Cecilia MacIntosh, Oxford; Florence MacIsaac, St. Andrew's; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Basil; sisters, Mary, Margaret, Irene, Sadie; brothers, Peter, Jerry, Campbell, John F. The funeral service will be held 1:30 today in St. Andrew's Church, St. Andrew's, Rev. Vernon Boutlier officiating. Burial in St. Ann's Cemetery, Guysborough. Born in Peabody, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Helena (Spence) Wilt. She was a member of Pilgrim United Church Brooklyn. She loved car travel, country and bluegrass music. HIRE, John Robert Sr. (Jack) - Lower Sackville, passed away October 5, 1999, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Owen and Edna (Vieth) Hire. He was employed with Air Liquide for 42 years, retiring as plant manager. He was a member of the Sackville Pentecostal Assembly, an avid hunter and fisherman, and his favourite spot was the Sunset Lodge in Mooseland. He was a devoted husband, father and friend to all who knew him. Surviving are his wife, the former Irene Dunn; daughters, Patricia (Mrs. David Leblanc), Edmonton; Suzanne, Halifax; sons, John Jr. and Jacqueline, Kentville; Robert, Lower Sackville; brothers, Ken and Ronnie, Lower Sackville; sisters, Joan Barr, Joyce Hill, Shirley O'sullivan and Barbara Rudge, all of Lower Sackville; grandchildren, John, Mark, Michael and David; many nieces and nephews. KERR, Alexander - 73, North River Bridge, passed away suddenly on October 4, 1999. Born in North River, he was a son of the late Dan Angus and Sarah (Briggette) Kerr and stepmother Jesse A. (MacLeod). Alex retired from Municipal Ready Mix where he worked for 30 years. In his younger years he also worked in the woods and farmed. He especially loved horses. He always had a story or a joke and a cup of tea for friends and neighbours when they dropped in for a visit. Alex is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jean (MacDonald) Kerr; his son, Jess, Baddeck; his daughters, Valerie MacLean, Truro; and Kathy, North River; grandchildren, Shannan, Dereck and Monica Kerry; Shana, Natasha and Moran MacLean; brothers, John, Sydney; and Peter, Baddeck; and his sister, Murdena Carmichael, Munroe's Point. Born January 25, 1925 in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas and Jenny Maude (Herman) Graves. She was a member of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Halifax. She was an avid writer and had many pen-pals all over the world, including Japan and Finland. She enjoyed knitting and sewing. Surviving are her husband, Bernard; step-sons, Bernard Wayne, Winnipeg; John, Jerome (Jerry) and wife Diane, all of Halifax; David, British Columbia, Clara's son, Jim Chandler (Laura Lee), Kentville; sisters, Mary Graves, Berwick; Lillian Miller, Upper Kennetcook; grandchildren, Shelley, Christina, Victoria, BC; Sean, Liam, Halifax; Melissa Day, Dartmouth; great-grandchildren, Alexandre, BC; Caleb, Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews. Born in Horden, County Durham, England, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Mary A. (Bricknell) Flanagan. She was a member of the All Saints Anglican Church, Springhill; Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary; Springhill Senior Citizens Club and the First President of the Springhill Home and School Association. She enjoyed sewing, reading, singing, dancing, travel and her family. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mercelle Hannah of Springhill; two sons, Harold (Ann) Raper of Fredericton and Kenneth (Catherine) Raper of Berwick, NS; a sister, Mrs. Georgina Craggs and a brother Randolph Flanagan both of England; eight grandchildren, Valerie, Greg, Hal, Chris, Pamela, Pattie, Trevor, and Cheryl. Eleven great grandchildren, Brian, Robin, Jamie, Keighl, Alexa, Brittany, Kristin, Michelle, Matthew, Kodie, and Rion. She was predeceased by her husband Harold Keighley Raper; brothers, Richard, William, and George and sisters, Elizabeth, Margaret, Jean, Ann Belle, one great grandson, Cple. RAWLE, Frances Lucretia - 82, Allan Heights, passed away October 4, 1999, in the VG Site, QEII. Born September 6, 1917, in Falmouth, she was a daughter of the late James R. and Maggie B. (Berringer) MacLeod. She graduated from the Windsor Academy and the Yarmouth School of Nursing, she did private duty in the Windsor area for several years and also worked on the staff of the Halifax Infirmary and Camp Hill Hospitals from which she retired in 1977. She was an adherent of the Bay Road Baptist Church, St. Margaret's Bay and a member of the St. Johns Presbyterian Church, Windsor. She is survived by sisters, Margaret Coleman, Halifax; Dorothy Davis, Windsor; Helen (William) Ingram, Halifax; Louise (Ernest) Parker, Falmouth; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Bernard W.; brother, Alex in infancy. Her remains were cremated. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today, Rev. Shawn Manuel officiating. Burial will be held in Tremont Cemetery, Tremont, Annapolis Co. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements entrusted to Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home.

STARKEY, Thomas J. - Halifax, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 5, 1999, in the VG Site QEII. Born in Wales, he was a son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Small) Starkey. He served as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy for 34 years. Following this, he was employed with the Post Office as Post Master in Port Mouton, Queens Co., Surviving are his loving wife, the former, Sarah Clark; son, Christopher, Nfld.; Raymond, Alberta; four grandchildren; brothers, Emlyn and Fred of England; sister, Myra, England. He was predeceased by brother Jim, Australia. Cremation has taken place. No visitation of flowers by request. Memorial service 2 p.m. Friday, October 8, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, his son, Pastor Chris Starkey officiating. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late John James and Lorena (Spencer) MacDonald. She was a member of St. John's Church, New Aberdeen. She was a former resident of the Hub. She did volunteer work with the CNIB. She loved playing cards and bingo and she was an avid CBer. Survived by her companion, Roy Miles; daughter, Debbie (White) MacDonald; brothers, Joseph "Bobby", Glace Bay; John "Dookie" MacDonald, Dominion; John "Cook" MacDonald, Bridgeport; sisters, Rose Smith, Dominion; Katheline Curry, Dominion; Agnes Pastuck, New Waterford; Cecilia MacPherson, Ontario; Shirley Chiasson, Reserve; Ann, Janice, Bridgeport; three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James Edward White; son, James White; daughter, Mary; brother, Melvin MacDonald; sister, Theresa Cooke. Visitation 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. today in V.J. MacGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral 10 a.m. Friday in St. John's Church, Rev. Paul MacGillivray officiating. Burial in parish Cemetery. Donations to any charity.

WOODWORTH, Carl James - 89, Greenwich, Kings County, NS, passed away October 4, 1999 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Glenmont, Kings County he was a son of the late Charles and Evelyn (Brewster) Woodworth. He resided in the Valley Area all his life. He worked in construction for all of his working career and he was employed for V.C. Woodworth before retirement. He is survived by his wife the former Elizabeth Baker; daughter Carol-Ann Starrett, Milwaukee, Wis.; sisters, Hilda Fraser, Habitant; Vera Brown, Kentville; Lillian Bennett, Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife the former Ruth Deal, brothers, Walter, Earl, Vernon and Laurie; sister, Flora White. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, in H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Kentville. Mr. James Abbott officiating. Burial in the St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Wolfville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the VON Kings Branch, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, Kentville or the charity of choice.
