KNOWLTON, Jonathan February 22, 1937- August 19, 2004 Artist Retired professor of Fine Art, University of Alberta, passed away on August 19, 2004, in his 67th year. He will be sadly missed by his son Christopher and wife Lisette (Aspen, CO), daughter Katherine and husband Matthew Soares (Boston, MA), granddaughter Natalia (Edmonton, AB), brother Eben (New York, NY), and stepmother Helen Foote Knowlton (Falls Village, CT). Jonathan graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of fine arts degree and received his master of fine arts degree from Berkeley University. He received a Fulbright grant to study painting and printmaking in Paris and was hired to establish the printmaking department at the University of Alberta in 1966. His instruction in painting and drawing was an inspiration to many of his students. From 1970-71 he studied sculpture in Florence, Italy under a Canada Council grant. He was awarded a series of University research grants from 1977-89. His paintings, watercolours, and prints are included in the permanent collections of major museums, academic institutions, and corporations across Canada and the US including MOMA (NYC), Los Angeles County Museum, Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco), MFA (Montreal), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Government of Alberta: Culture, Visual Arts and Social Services Branch, University of Art Museum (Berkeley), University of Alberta Art Gallery, Alberta Art Foundation, the Edmonton Art Gallery, Petro Canada, Syncrude, and Imperial Oil. He continued painting until his death. The loyalty and support of his friends and family in Canada and The United States was greatly appreciated by Jonathan. HOUGH, Olive Mildred nee Craig A 54 year resident of Edmonton, Alberta passed away peacefully in her home in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the age of 91 years on September 14, 2004. Mildred was born in Sedgewick, Alberta, April 11, 1913 as the only daughter of the late Dr. W.H. Craig and Mrs. Eva Craig. In 1918 she moved with her parents and brother Vernon to Camrose, Alberta where she grew up and was active in the United Church, CGIT, Sunday School and the Youth Group. Mildred loved her music and piano and always wanted to play a pipe organ, but chose nursing. She graduated from the Misercordia Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. She nursed throughout the province including Banff, Barrhead, Riley and Sedgewick as a special duty nurse. In 1941 she married Geoffrey Hough of England and Edmonton and to this union was born three daughters. Colleen Elizabeth (Wilson) of Medicine Hat and Allison Hough of Toronto and Patricia Joan. After the sudden death of her husband in 1957 she raised her daughters as a very caring, loving, unselfish Mother. She returned to nursing as an OR nurse and then was on the staff of the City of Edmonton Public Health Department for 16 years as District and School Nurse in the Hardisty and Fulton Place areas. On retirement she was active in Volunteer work and was a life member of the Women's Auxillary of the Royal Alexandria Hospital. She enjoyed over 30 years of bowling and was an avid knitter. In 1997 she moved to Medicine Hat to be near her family. She was predeceased by her husband Geoffrey, 1957, brother Vernon, 1940, father Dr. W.H. Craig 1951, mother Eva in 1984 and great-grandchild Alexandra in 1999. Mildred was a direct descendant of Sir David Kirk, Admiral of the Fleet, who settled Newfoundland and was their first Governor in 1623, capturing Quebec and Chaplain in 1629. Also, a direct descendant of Dan Winters of Armagh, Ireland where the Orange Lodge was started in his root cellar in 1795. She will be missed by Allison Hough (Toronto). HRYCKOWSKI, Walter (Vladimir) Born in Smoky Lake, Alberta on April 25th, 1921, Walter spent his youth in the Vilna area. He moved to Brule, Alberta in 1958. Survived by his wife Marion of Brule, Alberta; stepdaughters Judy (Fred) Howlett and Pam Scheffler as well as granddaughter Marie (Ian) Calliou and great-grandson Ty Calliou all of Hinton, Alberta and granddaughter Cheryl Howlett of Calgary, Alberta. Also surviving is his sister-in-law Mary Hryckowski of Brule, Alberta; two nieces and five nephews; as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and many friends. LABBE, Pierre On September 13, 2004, Pierre Labbe of Sherwood Park passed away peacefully at the age of 84 years. MacKINNON, Clarence Stuart Stuart MacKinnon, a retired University of Alberta History Professor, long-time enthusiastic canoeist and hiker in the Canadian North, passed away on September 12, 2004 as a result of injuries sustained in a bicycle accident earlier in the summer. Stuart was born in Montreal on December 29, 1934. He was the son of the late Alstair and Ruth MacKinnon, the loving brother of Mairi Edge (William) of Ottawa and beloved uncle of Tom Edge (Gabrielle) of Toronto, Cynthia Phillips (Michael) of Munich, Germany and Diana Dowling (Joseph) of Greenwich, USA.
