Bernice Somerville
Mrs. Bernice Louise Somerville of Kelliher; beloved wife of the late Thomas Laurence Somerville, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the Fort Qu'Appelle Hospital. She was 69 years of age. Bernice was born on May 2, 1933 on the family farm south of Kelliher; a daughter of George and Mabel (nee Lubenow) Godlien. She attended Garnick School while helping with the farm livestock (cattle and horses) as well as house chores. After she completed her grade ten she chose to move into Kelliher and board and became employed at the Kelliher Creamery where she tested and separated cream. She became employed at the Sunnyland Hatchery after the creamery had burned down; which replaced the old building and there she remained until her retirement when the plant had moved to Wynyard. Although, they still asked her to work part time to train the new recruits; which she did but, wasn't too happy about the modern technology, when she had worked hard all those years: handling eggs, injecting and sexing chickens and running like crazy! She figured they had it too easy. Bernice chose to marry Thomas Laurence Somerville on October 18, 1957. They remained in Kelliher where she worked and he was employed at various jobs such as: the pool hall, John Deere Shop, locker plant etc. as well as Sask-Tel. In 1960 they had a daughter Deborah (Debbie) Mae; 1963 a son Raymond Laurence; and years later in 1972 another daughter Janice Leanne. She had all of her children active in sports in school and participated in volunteer work surrounding that. As a young adult and a mother she enjoyed playing ball, curling, fishing, hunting, camping out at the lake, knitting sweaters and such, collecting articles from garage sales (you know what people say; some peoples junk is another person s treasure). She was avid at collecting coins and antiques. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, keeping her flowers blooming and bird watching as well. She always was out in the yard fussing. Bernice really enjoyed old time music, as well as playing the guitar, accordion and organ by ear!
Bernice leaves to cherish her memory her children: Deborah and her husband Elmer Feszczyn and their children: Jeffrey, Mark and Shane of Kelliher, Raymond and his wife Karen and their daughter Kristen of Saskatoon and Janice and her special friend Andy Chernier of Kelliher. Her mother Mabel of the Ituna Pioneer Lodge; a brother Lloyd of Abbotsford; sisters: Marilyn Nazar of Wynyard, Loreen (Donald) Budd of Mission B.C. as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas, father George; brother Ronald, sister Evelyn, brother - in - law Alex Nazar and sister: Gladys Haynes and her husband Jimmy.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, March 25, 2003 from St. Paul United Church Kelliher with Reverend Don Milne Officiating. Lenore Rein was the organist. The special music selections for the service were: 'Too Young To Die Young', 'I'll Fly Away' and 'I Believe'. The Interment followed in the Kelliher Memorial Gardens with Bernice's children: Debbie, Ray and Janice serving as urn bearers.
