His sudden death has left us missing him terribly. His insightful views on world issues and a wonderful sense of humour entertained many. His charismatic, expressive personality charmed almost everyone he came to know. He had a close circle of friends that saw through a gruff exterior to a caring, articulate and intelligent man. Born in Port Arthur on August 1, 1911, he grew up on Banning Street, went on to attend Queen's University and worked as a pharmacist at Bourke's Dug Store in Port Arthur for 25 years. In 1948 he married Iva Ruth Turner. They were one of the first to build a home on Farrand Street. He cut the wood for the construction of their home from land in Gorham Township. Farrand Street was their home for 19 years where he enjoyed gardening, beekeeping and raising his family. He also built a camp at Crescent Bay and spent many wonderful years sailing, fishing and enjoying the lake with his family. He loved hunting and fishing and always reminisced of the trips spent with hunting partners who came to be his best friends in life. In 1967 he purchased the Riverdale Store on Hwy. 61 and for 10 years operated a successful business with his wife and children. In 1977 Bill and Iva sold the store and began travelling. For the next 22 years they lived in Texas, then Florida in the winters and spent the summers on Lake Superior on Grandview Beach where he resided until his sudden death.
