Campbell: Dr. Donald
Dr. Donald Edgerly Campbell, a physician who personified professionalism and compassion in a small-town practice he maintained for fifty years, died yesterday at his home on Main street. He was 95. Known for his self-deprecating humor, his fondness for poker, his prolific knowledge of medicine and his amiable and calming bedside manner, "Doc" Campbell was, by all accounts, one of the most well-known and well-liked people in town. "My mother claimed to be his first patient," said former selectwoman Mary V. Flynn, herself a former patient. "I don't know if that's true, because I think a lot of people have vied for the honor. But he was a wonderful doctor and a dear man." In fact, not only was Dr. Campbell a model physician, he was a model physician's model. He served as famed illustrator Norman Rockwell's inspiration for the now famous 1958 cover of the Saturday Evening Post, "Before the shot." That's the illustration depicting a nervous youngster checking his physician's diploma just before the doctor is to administer a long needle to the lad's posterior. It is one of the most well known of the Rockwell illustrations and hangs in many a physician's office throughout the country. Dr. Campbell and Rockwell were neighbors, according to Linda Pero, curator of collections at the Norman Rockwell Museum. Rockwell was also a patient and friend of the doctor's, which probably led to Rockwell hiring him as a model. Dr. Campbell was one of the last of the old-time doctors. He made house calls, did his own lab work, took and developed his own X-rays, dispensed medication and gave EKGs. He never spoke ill of group medical practices, but his philosophy was that a general practitioner "know the whole patient." "He was a throwback to the good old days," said Flynn. "You went to the doctor, or he came to you, and you told him what was wrong with you. Then he'd give you some medicine, charge you $15, and that was the end of it. When I think of what I have to do to be treated by a doctor now, I long for those bygone days." Flynn recalled the time her mother broke her hip, "on a Sunday, no less!" Dr. Campbell was at the Flynn house that afternoon. His commitment to his patients was legendary. At a party honoring Dr. Campbell for 35 years of service, then state sen. John H. Fitzpatrick recalled the time when he and the doctor were hunkered down in a poker game with several other players. Dr. Campbell was trying to draw a straight that was open at both ends, meaning he could have drawn several combinations of cards that would have filled it. But an emergency call came in and, without even drawing, Dr. Campbell threw his cards on the table and left the game. "That," said Fitzpatrick with admiration, "is dedication." "The number of hours, Dr. Campbell put in was just extraordinary," said Police Chief Richard B. Wilcox. "In the early 1970's, when I came on board, there was no ambulance squad and no emergency medical technicians. As a police officer, you were kind of on your own. "When I used to work the midnight shift," he continued, "if you had an accident, you called Dr. Campbell, and he'd be out there with his little black bag every time - even if it was 3, 4 o'clock in the morning - and take care the victims at the scene. I can't tell you how often he did that. Countless times." Dr. Campbell also served as a medical examiner and was a member of the town's Board of Health. A few years ago he was honored for his long service to the town. And, in addition to all that, he served as the town veterinarian to sick dogs, cats, birds and turtles brought in for treatment by generations of young children. Dr. Campbell began his practice in 1939. He retired in 1989, admitting to a visitor at the time that at 83, he was beginning to get a little fuzzy with names. His office hours were Monday through Friday from 8 to 4:30, but long time patients knew he was always available after supper. He was born in Edwards, NY on February 16, 1906, the last of three surviving children of Willis M. and Gertrude Edgerly Campbell. He earned his medical degree at Middlesex Medical school in Waltham, now Brandeis University. He was a Captain in the Army during WW II, serving in a hospital in Bristol, England. He came to Stockbridge, just before the war, in 1939. Dr. Campbell was also a member of the West Stockbridge American Legion. He charged $2 for an office visit and $3 for a house call. Often, in those days, he would take payment in venison, firewood, or garden vegetables. Dr. Campbell and his wife, the former Anna Wedell, were married in 1939. Mrs. Campbell died in 1989. He leaves four daughters, Deborah C. Connery, of Minneapolis, Jeanie C. Jones, of Palm Bay, FL, and of Stockbridge; Betsy C. Manning, of Stockbridge, and Bonnie Flower, of Great Barrington; thirteen grandchildren, Bruce, Diedre, Donald, Eliza, Eric, Gabriel, Hana, Karen,Kristen,Kym,Linda, shawn, and Victoria; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Elizabeth Ann died in 1947. He is also predeceased by a brother James H. Campbell, and a sister Mrs. Lela Brown.
