without knowing the
vastness of the sky,
Then we can believe
in miracles.
If we can believe in rainbows
after the darkest storm,
Then we can believe in hope.
Somewhere beyond the clouds, behind the rain, there are a thousand rainbows.
One is finding its way to you; our hearts are unaware of what sweet miracles may come."

Words can't express the grief we all feel,
Torn from us too quick, it still seems so unreal.
We expected you to be with us to day, tomorrow and always
Expected to see your face, hear your voice, for the rest of our days
You were never a man who wanted much
No crying, no tears and such
Yet it's so hard to be that strong
When we all loved you for so long
You meant so much to everyone who knew you
People as special as you, there are too few
We ll remember you and your smile now and forever
In everything we do and all our endeavors
Only the good die young and now you're gone
Whoever said that hit it right on.

Hurrell, Tillie
April 14, 2003
Mrs. Tillie Hurrell, a resident of Thunder Bay, after 89 fully lived years, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar Site. Tillie was born May 19, 1913 in Fort William to Olaf Peter Sandberg and Anna Maria Sandberg (nee Tufting), who had emigrated from Ramsele, Sweden to live in Oliver Township and she lived her childhood on the family farm west of Murillo. During her student days at the Port Arthur Collegiate Institute she met her husand Hayward. They married December 27, 1941 and settled in Port Arthur. Three children were born and raised lovingly with the benefits of their parents' guidance, support and companionship. They are Peter of Thunder Bay, Douglas of Campbell River and Hilary of Vancouver. Tillie was a teacher in the local elementary school system and at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital. Also during her career she was employed by the Department of Indian Affairs, assisting northern students with the sometime difficult transition to living and learning in the city. However, the demands of these positions and home life did not stifle her urge to study: she gave new meaning to the term "continuing education" by earning at Lakehead University a Bachelor Of Arts degree in 1971 and a Masters degree in 1992 in English Literature. Recreation for Tillie included gardening, weaving, reading and family gatherings at home, at the homes of her children and grandchildren and at the cottage on Lake Shebandowan. She also loved to write, of which more below. She is survived by Hayward, by the children mentioned above, by grandchildren Lynne and Stephen of Thunder Bay, Christie of Toronto and Paul Pampu of Vancouver, and by great-grandchildren Erica and Meagan of Thunder Bay. We shall weep for her this week, but in future will cherish the life and gifts of a capable lady who had the brains and the heart to write as well as this:
Sonnet for a Farm Wife
She loved all living things that ever grew,
Helped them grow straight and strong, while she grew old.
Her plants, her sons, her friends and kinfolk, knew
The inarticulate love her kind hands told.
Her acres prospered, and her boys grew tall,
And sped, proud mariners with sails unfurled.
To-night she pauses to survey her all,
And reckon profits of her little world.
I see her now, her labours done, strength spent,
Watching the flaming banners in the West.
"Lord, for the gifts Thou gavest, here are these Thy fruits. Humbly I offer what was lent."
Her hands, too rarely idle, fold at rest,
And in her tired eyes shines infinite peace.
These lines were written to describe her mother Anna, but, except for "inarticulate", they epitomize Tillie. If these words seem difficult, we will quote her again, specifically her customary advice to her children--"Look it up in the dictionary." She was the last surviving sibling, predeceased by her sister Thyra, her brother Thorsten and her brother Ted, who gave his life as an airman in the Second World War. Her loving husband Hayward is presently a patient at St. Joseph's Care Group, where, during her illness earlier this winter, she shared a room with him. Since her discharge from hospital Tillie was a loyal and cheerful visitor to his bedside. We hope some of their old friends will be able to console him in the pain of her going. The family wish to thank Dr. Nickerson, Dr. Nigro and Dr. Bon; also the staff of St. Joseph's, the Glacier Ridge Retirement Home and both branches of the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, for their compassionate, encouraging and professional assistance. As expressions of sympathy, the family respectfully suggests, donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, St. Joseph's Care Group, Lakehead University or to the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. when family and friends will gather at St. Paul's United Church with Rev. Cathy MacMillan officiating. All services complete in the church. Interment will take place in Stanley Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

I walked with you as long as I could.
Our years were many, our days were good.
I watched you fade slowly day by day;
Our hearts wept tears, I hid away.
I could not show you weakness or grief,
I gave you strength and staunch belief.
God took your hand and we had to part.
He eased your pain, but he broke my heart.
I wanted you with me for a few more years.
God knew how I felt, but he knew best.
He took you home so you could rest.
Life goes on, I know it's true,
But it's not the same since I lost you.
Your beautiful memories I will treasure forever,
Of the happy days when we were together.
With an aching heart I whisper low,
I love you and miss you so.
Love Susan
