Renee V. Lea Golden

Renee Golden passed away June 8, 2003, at Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. She was 46.

Renee was a talented artist as well as editor of American Freedom Magazine for radio station KHMC, where her husband, Michael, is station engineer. She also created the cover for Michael's latest Messianic music CD.

Renee and Michael married Sept. 11, 1987.

Renee is survived by her husband; a daughter, Carol Hogaboom; a stepson, Cody Golden; her father, Robert; and a brother, Kevin.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

A memorial service, officiated by Renee's brother, the Rev. Kevin Lea, was held June 10 in Johnstown, Colo., where Renee and Michael resided. Interment was at Steamboat Springs Cemetery.

Stephen Brady Conn 1971-2003
Sunday, July 27, 2003

Steamboat Springs resident Stephen Brady Conn died unexpectedly at his home July 10, 2003. He was 32.

Born in Belgrade, Yugo-slavia, Brady traveled with his family for many years. Bogotá, Colombia; Williamsburg, Va.; Cape Cod, Mass.; and The Hague, Netherlands were among his homes.

Conn graduated from high school at the American School of The Hague and attended Nova College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the University of Maryland at College Park before settling in Steamboat in 1992.

Conn was a free spirit whose enthusiasm and generosity endeared him to all. He lived hard and played hard. Foremost, he valued his friendships and the company of his friends. His dog, Rosie, was a constant companion. He took great pleasure in snowboarding, hiking, camping, playing tennis, listening to music and working on his computer. He was employed in a variety of service and management positions in Steamboat.

Conn loved his family members and was loved by them.

He is survived by his father, Stephen Conn, and his father's wife, Dianne, of Easton, Md.; his mother, Barbara Brady Conn of South Deerfield, Mass.; his sister, Sarah, of Tacoma, Wash.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A mountaintop service was held July 20, 2003, in Steamboat. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Aug. 9, 2003, at Newton Cemetery in Newton, Mass.

Jim P. Metziner 1923-2003
Saturday, November 29, 2003

Jim P. Metziner died Nov. 25, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 79.

Jim was born Dec. 2, 1923, to Irene and Harry Metziner of Phippsburg, where Jim spent his childhood.

During World War II he served in the Pacific theater as a Navy corpsman. After the war, he completed a degree in pharmacy from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Jim worked as a pharmacist for 30 years at Oak Creek Drug, which he owned. He also was a partner for 10 years in Lyon's Corner Drug in Steamboat Springs.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim loved fly fishing and the Flat Tops Wilderness, especially Trappers Lake, where he spent many summers camping. His love for the outdoors was only exceeded by his love for his family and the Lord. Jim put his devotion into action by serving as treasurer of Calvary Bible Church for more than 12 years. He also was chairman of the building committee that oversaw the work to rebuild the church after it burned down in the late-1980s.

Jim is survived by his wife, Doris; three children, Jim Metziner of Festus, Mo., Janice Hainlen of Westminster, and Connie Bradley of Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jodi Harris-Fox

Steamboat Springs resident Jodi Harris-Fox died Sept. 6, 2003, in Las Vegas.

Jodi was born Feb. 12, 1964, in El Paso, Texas. She lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Dallas/Fort Worth area before moving to Steamboat in June 2002.

Jodi was a graduate of the University of North Texas. She was a photographer and an artist. She often volunteered to work with charities for animals and children.

Jodi is survived and missed dearly by her husband, Andrew Fox; her mother, Sharon Burnside; her father, Jack Harris; three brothers; one sister; four nieces; and four nephews.

A memorial service was held Sept. 17, 2003, in Southlake, Texas.

Mary Ellen ‘Mariel' Luckens Bettger: 1926-2003
Saturday, November 29, 2003

Mary Ellen Luckens Bettger died Nov. 19, 2003. She was 77.
Mariel was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Dayton, Ohio, to Homer Elwin and Wanda Martha Luckens. Mariel was an only child.
She attended Oakwood High School in Dayton, where she was a member of the Sureshots girls basketball team and the National Honor Society. She graduated from Wichita East High School in Wichita, Kan., in 1944. Mariel attended the University of Kansas.
She married Lt. Stanley H. Jones on Dec. 23, 1944. The couple had three daughters, Jan Ellen, Jennianne "Anne," and Judith "Judy" Carol. Her daughters and her grandson are her legacy, her life and her love. Mariel and Stan, though divorced, remained friendly until Mariel's death. She married Richard Bettger in Steamboat Springs on Feb. 14, 1996.
Mariel loved the Rocky Mountains and watching wild animals. Her greatest joys were her three "J's" and her beloved pets, including her most recent ones, Barney, a dog, and Sooty, a cat. She loved talking on the telephone and hearing and passing on the news about her daughters and their families. She prided herself in an organized and tidy home and was the center of the home when her daughters were growing up. Her husband, Richard, made the golden years of their lives a fun and contented time.
Mariel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; and two grandsons, Charles Louis Reed and Travis Mathew Brown.
She is survived by her daughters, Jan Boutelle and her husband, Larry, of Springfield, Mo., Anne Brown and her husband, Richard, of Seattle, Wash., and Judy Eschmeyer and her husband, Ken, of Fort Collins; and five grandsons, Nathaniel Boutelle, Trevor and Tyler Brown, Bret and Chad Eschmeyer and Chad's fiancée, Stephanie Dowling.
Mariel's family asks that she be remembered by those who knew her by telling their own mothers how much they love them and taking them out to dinner.
A private family memorial service was held Nov. 24, 2003, at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins. It was officiated by the Rev. Larry Boutelle.

Andrew Robert Roise: 2004-2004

Andrew Robert Roise, the firstborn son of Andrew and Bethany Roise, died Jan. 27, 2004, after nine months of life spent being treasured by his parents and being knit together by God in his mother's womb.

Andrew was born at 5:48 p.m. Jan. 29, 2004, at Yampa Valley Medical Center. He weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 21.5 inches long.

He is survived by his proud and loving parents; his maternal and paternal grandparents, Del and Nina Lockhart of Steamboat Springs and Doug and Michelle Roise of Georgetown, Minn.; maternal great-grandparents Lloyd and Annabeth Lockhart of Steamboat and Dick and Connie Nichols of Cottonwood, Ariz.; paternal great-grandparents Robert and Dorothy Roise of Minot, N.D., and Robert and Thelma Bolduc of Stephen, Minn.; nine uncles, Daniel Dawson, James and Jonathan Lockhart of Steamboat, Peter Roise of Moscow, Idaho, Stephen, Michael, Christian and Douglas Roise of Georgetown, Minn.; and four aunts, Susanna and Sarah Lockhart of Steamboat and Elizabeth and Abigail Roise of Georgetown, Minn.

Little Andrew truly was a blessed boy.

A memorial service was held at the Yampa Valley Funeral Home. Graveside services followed with Pastor Mike Ferguson officiating. Andrew is interred in Steamboat Springs Cemetery.

Dorothy Dale Muirhead: 1914-2004

Former Steamboat Springs resident Dorothy Dale Muirhead died Jan. 30, 2004, in Loveland. She was 89.

Dorothy was born Nov. 14, 1914, to Maud Luekens and Clarence Elkins in Steamboat Springs.

She attended Steamboat Springs High School and was a member of the ski and basketball teams.

Dorothy was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and P.E.R.A. for Thompson Valley.

In the summer of 1933, she worked as a cook for the road crew on Rabbit Ears Pass. She also worked as a teacher's aide in the Thompson Valley School District for 20 years, and as a cook at Sierra Vista from 1960 to 1961.

Dorothy married Allen Muirhead on Nov. 14, 1932, in Steamboat. The couple farmed in Steamboat, Longmont and Loveland.

Dorothy's life was devoted to others. She was a constant companion to her husband for 66 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She shared her love, understanding and a helping hand to all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; her parents; three brothers, Gene, Carroll and Marvin; two sisters, Hazel and Lee; and a son-in-law, Tom Wertz.

She is survived by two sons, Allen Duane and his wife, Rosalie, of LaSalle, and Larry and his wife, Sharon, of Bellevue; four daughters, Joan and her husband Carl Bochmann of Berthoud, Janet and her husband, Stan Hill, of Norris, Mont., Sharon Knudson of Masonville, and Shirley Wertz of Masonville; four sisters-in-law, Luella Muirhead of Denver, Rosetta Blecha of Sheridan, Mont., Violet Arnold of Grand Junction and Roberta Elkins of Steamboat; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held Feb. 6, 2004, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Loveland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in care of Resthaven Funeral Home, 100 E. County Road 30, Fort Collins, CO 80525.

Virginia S. Collins: 1916-2004

Steamboat Springs resident Virginia S. Collins died Jan. 23, 2004, at the Doak Walker Care Center. She was 87.

Virginia was born March 18, 1916, in Colorado Springs to Fernando and Ethel Sanford. She grew up in Casper, Wyo., and graduated from Natrona County High School in 1932. Virginia went on to Colorado College and the University of Colorado, from which she graduated in 1936. She was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority.

After graduation, she moved to Midwest, Wyo., to teach school. It was there that she met Ralph Collins, whom she married June 15, 1940.

The couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Ralph was stationed in the U.S. Coast Guard. After World War II the couple moved many places, including Rangely, Tulsa, Okla., Fort Worth, Texas, and Shreveport, La. They finally settled in Denver in 1954.

Virginia lived in Denver until 2002, when she moved to The Haven in Hayden and then to the Doak Walker Care Center.

Virginia was involved in many organizations in Denver, including the Red Cross and the Denver Art Museum. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, working on crossword puzzles and being a member of an investment club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Susan L. Rowland.

Virginia is survived by two daughters, Sharry and her husband, Ron Roundtree, of Steamboat and Sheilah and her husband, John Morley, of Sanibel, Fla.; two granddaughters, Jenna Roundtree of Denver and Andrea Burow of Fishers, Ind.; and two great-granddaughters, Katelin and Jenna Burow of Fishers, Ind.

Virginia will be remembered and missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Virginia's memory to the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101, Steamboat Springs, CO, 80487.

Jessica ‘Jazz' Avery Zulian Ziegler Horn 1960-2003

Jessica "Jazz" Zulian Ziegler Horn died Nov. 2, 2003, in Texas. She was 21.

Jessica married Lynn Horn on Jan. 31, 2003, in Craig.

Jessica and Lynn were visiting relatives in Beaumont, Texas, when, after a trip to the Gulf of Mexico, Jessica and her unborn child were tragically killed in an automobile accident.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, John Schuster, and her great-grandmother, Mary Zulian.

Jessica is survived by her husband, Lynn Horn, of Craig; two sons, Jeremiah and Johnathen Ziegler of Craig; her mother, Sheryl Zulian of Craig; her father, Ken Ziegler of Gunnison; her grandparents, Don and Bev Zulian of Craig and Mary Ziegler of Hobe Sound, Fla.

Leonard Allen Blake: 1958-2004

Former Routt County resident Leonard Allen Blake died Jan. 10, 2004, in Denver from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 45.

Len was born Feb. 20, 1958, in Denver to Leonard O. and Isabelle F. Blake.

He grew up in the Yampa area, where he learned to hunt and fish. He attended school in the South Routt School District system and graduated in 1976.

Len had a distinguished athletic career, including being a three-time state champion wrestler.

He spent 27 years working for the railroad.

Len was preceded in death by his mother, Isabelle.

He is survived by his four children, Juleen Villalovas of Casper, Wyo., Brian Blake, Jason Blake and Tiffany Blake of Steamboat Springs; four grandchildren, Derek and Davin Blake of Steamboat and Adaleen and Jayleen Villalovas of Casper, Wyo.; his father, Leonard Blake of Yampa; and his brother, David Blake of Denver; along with numerous friends and relatives.

Christine Keefner (1962-2004)

Former Steamboat Springs resident Christine Keefner died April 4, 2004, of heart failure in Boulder. She was 41.

Christine was born Dec. 1, 1962, in Milwaukee to Fritz and Maureen Keefner.

She attended Steamboat Springs High School and a community college in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Christine was an inspiration and an example of the importance of consideration toward all people. She had a tenacious will to live life to its fullest despite the overwhelming obstacles she faced. Christine's body was permanently disabled and her cognitive mind was severely impaired, but she always fought to craft an independent life with meaning and value to others.

She was very giving and forgiving while never losing hope for better times ahead.

Some of Christine's favorite activities included freestyle skiing with coach Park Smalley and swimming. She was a 1984 graduate of an independent living program and received the Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1986 from the Scottsdale Foundation for the Disabled. She also was a winner of the 1986 Ms. Wheelchair Arizona pageant.

Christine was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joe and Evelyn Keefner, and a grandfather, Jean L. O'Dell.

She is survived by her parents; a sister, Cynthia Maytag of Prescott, Ariz.; a brother, John Keefner of Lafayette; a grandmother, Wilma O'Dell of Boulder and four nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is at 4 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Boulder.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chris Keefner Scholarship Fund in care of the Center for People with Disabilities, 1675 Range, Boulder, CO 80301. The fund will provide assistance to people who wish to attend the Center for People with Disabilities Independent Living Program.

Ellwyn F. Hayslip

Ellwyn Hayslip of Concord, N.H., died March 19, 2004, after a bout with cancer. He was 77.

Ellwyn was born May 15, 1926, in Flushing, Queens, N.Y., to Ellwyn Sr. and Minnie Hayslip.

Ellwyn was a radioman in the Navy at the end of World War II. He then moved to Burlington, Vt., to study art education at the University of Vermont. He continued his loyalty to the University of Vermont after graduating in 1950, recently serving as his class president.

He earned his master's degree at Columbia University, supervised the art program in Burlington Public Schools, and taught at Johnson State College in Vermont and at Kutztown State College in Pennsylvania.

In 1962, Ellwyn moved his family to the Plymouth, N.H., area to initiate the art education program at Plymouth State University. He taught in that program for 39 years. Ellwyn earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Syracuse University and a degree in art therapy from the Herfordshire College of Art and Design in St. Albans, England.

Ellwyn also lived in Littleton, Lakeport and, since 1979, Concord, all in New Hampshire.

Ellwyn studied the American Southwest, and many of his paintings reflect his love of American Indian traditions. He held a great fondness for the Steamboat Ski Area and his many friends on the Steamboat Ski Patrol.

He worked with various community organizations, most notably the Central New Hampshire Artists. He was chairman of the education committee for the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. He also was a founder of the North Country Studio Arts Conference.

In retirement, Ellwyn enjoyed traveling, skiing, reading, gardening and playing with his grandsons.

Ellwyn was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Sheridan; and a brother, Robert Hayslip.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Josephine "Jo" Buck Hayslip; two sons, Ellwyn Jr. "Skip" and his wife, Sally, of Canterbury, N.H., and Steven Hayslip of Steamboat Springs; two grandsons, Ellwyn IV and Graham Hayslip; and Steven's close friend, Tracie Grant of Laconia.

A celebration of Ellwyn's life is May 22, 2004, in Concord. Memorial donations can be made in Ellwyn's name to a favorite charity or organization.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Eubank Griffen

Jacqueline "Jackie" Eubank Griffen died March 15, 2004, in her home in Casa Grande with her family at her side.

Jackie was one of two daughters of an Arizona pioneer ranching family and was her daddy's "cowboy." Her favorite activities included house boating, fishing and golfing.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Horace B. Griffen; a son, Kent Griffen of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two daughters, Judy Griffen-Spencer of Yuma, Ariz., and Linda Griffen-Bray of Hayden; a sister, Joy Fullenwider of Golconda, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Angela and Alex Griffen of Casa Grande, Ariz., Stephen Briggs of Alice Springs, Australia, Edward Glenn Shilling of Mesa, Ariz., Steven Kent Shilling of Denver, and Christopher and Jeffrey Bray of Hayden; and three great-grandchildren.

No services are planned.
