H. Raymond Bunn
1920 - 1998
H. Raymond Bunn of Hayden, Colo., died Aug. 23, 1998, at the Extended Care Center in Steamboat Springs, Colo. He was 78.
Bunn was born to Isaac and Mary (Greer) Bunn April 6, 1920, in Henry, Tenn. He spent his childhood in Henry. and moved to Hayden when he was 18 years old.
Bunn was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Bunn married Clara Baker Jan. 25, 1958, in Denver, Colo.
He worked as a rancher, guide and outfitter and for Seneca Coal Company.
His hobbies were carpentary, roping, hunting, fishing and any outdoor activities.
Bunn is survived by his wife, Clara (Baker) Bunn, of Hayden; son, Michael Bunn, of Hayden; brother, Charles Bunn, of Delta, Colo.; sisters, Mary Kay Shovan, of Algonac, Mich., and Julia Ridgway of Sun City, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Earl Bunn.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 28, 1998, at the Hayden Congregational Church.
David Henderson of the Hayden American Legion Post officiated the service with Avis Funk as organist, Gretchen Hayes as soloist and selections of "Beyond The Sunset" and "Wind Beneath My Wings."
Honorary pallbearers were all his many friends.
Services concluded at the church.
Final disposition was by cremation.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice in care of Grant Mortuary.

Theresia Durkop
1935 -1998
Theresia Durkop of Hamilton, Colo., died Aug. 29, 1998, in Thornton, Colo. She was 62.
Durkop was born to Michael and Elizabeth (Horwath) Gross Sept. 29, 1935, in St. Peters, Hungary. She married Art Durkop May 28, 1960, in Ogallala, Neb.
Durkop was a homemaker. Her hobbies included watching wildlife and spending time with her nine grandchildren.
Durkop is survived by her husband, Art Durkop, of Hamilton; son, Henry Durkop and wife, Mindy, of Craig, Colo.; daughters, Linda Behrman and husband, Terry, of Craig, Nancy Bohrer and husband, James, of Craig, Rita Harris and husband, Jay, of Craig, Marie Durkop, of Denver, and Darlene Hamilton and husband, Ray, of McFadden, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; sisters, Elisabeth Burbach and Kathy Morway, of Thornton, and Marie Tavaszi, of Georgetown, Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Larry; her brother, Hans Gross; and granddaughter, Adrian Durkop.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 3, 1998, at Grant Mortuary in Craig. Minister Tim Osborn officiated.
Final disposition was at Craig Cemetery.

Muriel L. Avgares

1911 - 1998

Muriel L. Avgares of Craig, Colo., died Sept. 18, 1998, at Valley View Manor in Craig. She was 87.

Avgares was born to John Henry and Autrey (Dalton) Bailey Aug. 3, 1911, in Chickasha, Okla.

She married George Avgares, who died April 24, 1979. She lived in Craig for 80 years.

She was a housewife, worked for the Red Cross, was a secretary for Farm Bureau and worked as an election judge.

Avgares was a member of Home Demonstration Club, Cowbells, Hospital Auxiliary and Woolgrowers Auxiliary.

She enjoyed knitting, making latch hook rugs from wool and cooking.

She is survived by sons, Deno Avgares of Craig and Jim Avgares of Denver; sister, Nan DeBaca of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and two brothers.

Services were held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 21, 1998, at Grant Mortuary in Craig.

Kenneth Forshee officiated the service with Elaine DeuPree as organist and Ben Bye as soloist. Selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden."

Pallbearers were Steve Raftopoulos, Jake Timmer, Blaine Tucker, Tyler Kez, Jack Timmer and Richard Lovelady.

Interment was at the Craig Cemetery.

Darlene (Bonnie) Sherman

1942 - 1998

Darlene Sherman, a life-long resident of Craig, Colo., died at her home Sept. 14, 1998. She was 56.

She was born to Charles B. and Genevieve Vera (Mlinek) Hayes Edwards April 19, 1942, in Meeker and attended school in Craig.

She married Jon Daniel (Dan) Sherman Aug. 8, 1960, and they moved to the Ferndale Ranch Northwest of Craig. They ran a guide and outfitting operation.

Sherman volunteered at the hospital, became a nurse's aid, a ward clerk and obtained a position at the Craig Medical Clinic working there for 19 years.

She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, painting, gardening, photography, reading, genealogy, cake decorating, camping and traveling.

Sherman was a charter member of The Center of Craig, involved with the Craig Planning and Zoning Board for many years, a member of the Moffat County Parks and Recreation Board, a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and a 4-H leader when her children were young.

She is survived by good friend Dan Sherman; daughters, Deborah JoAnne (Tim) Hurst and Christina Rene (Lester) Welch; grandchildren, Corine Rene Welch, Sherry JoAnne Welch and Clint Daniel Welch of Craig; brothers, Charles B. (Dorothy) Hayes, Jr. of Grand Junction, Colo., and Larry Edward (Betty) Hayes of Evergreen, Colo.; stepfather, Joseph Edwards of Craig; and nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Daniel Sherman, her parents and a brother.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 18, 1998, at Grant Mortuary with Richard Henderson officiating.

Leonard Hurst of Sheridan, Wyo., father of Tim Hurst, was the soloist. Organist was Virginia Biskup. Selections were "The Lord's Prayer" and "In The Garden."

Pallbearers were John Cowie, Glen Sherman, Greg Hollar, Matt McCarthy, Lester Welch and Tim Hurst.

Memorial donations may be made in care of Grant Mortuary for her grandchildren's college fund.

George T. Boyer

1921 - 1998

George T. Boyer of Savery, Wyo., died at The Memorial Hospital in Craig, Colo., Sept. 12, 1998. He was 77.

Boyer was born to J. St. A. and Mary A. (Spicer) Boyer July 1, 1921, near Savery on the family ranch.

He spent his childhood in Savery and Thermopolis, Wyo., attending Kent Prep School in Kent County and Pasadena College.

He married Ruth Goodhue, who is deceased. He had formerly married Dorene Evans, who is deceased.

Boyer spent the summers in Savery and the winters in LaJolla, Calif.

He enjoyed tennis and gardening.

He is survived by a step-daughter, Pamela Voorhees Buncher of Del Mar, Calif; brother, Winston P. Boyer of Savery; sister, Joyce B. Saer of Savery; niece, Eliza Boyer Baer of Santa Fe, N.M.; nephews, Winston S. Boyer and Jonathan Boyer of Carmel, Calif.; and many other nieces and nephews.

Boyer was preceded in death by his wives, Dorene Evans and Ruth Goodhue; parents; brothers, Livingston, Dick and Jack; and sisters, Katherine and Charlotte.

Services will be held at a later date.

Final dispostion was cremation.

Dorothy Shelton

Dorothy Shelton of Craig died Friday at Valley View Manor. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Interment will follow in the Craig Cemetery.

Maxine Grounds

Maxine Grounds, formerly of Craig, died Friday in Colorado Springs. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Craig Cemetery.

Deborah Bartlett
1932 1998
Deborah Bartlett died at her home Nov. 10, 1998. She was 63.
Bartlett and a twin sister were born July 12, 1932, in Roseburg, Ore., the daughters of Elmer and Virginia (Murrdy) Trevenen.
She married Robert Bartlett of Craig, Colo., on Aug. 1, 1950.
Bartlett is survived by her husband; two sons, David and Brice Richard Bartlett, of Rock Springs, Wyo.; Sherrie Ann Bennett of Muskegon, Mich.; two brothers, Robert and Tom Trevenen of Craig; three sisters, June Harrison of Gray Eagle, Calif., Flora Jean Sullivan of Delta, Colo., and twin sister, Delores Solace of Hayden, Colo. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Lois Rushing.
Funeral services were held Nov. 14, 1998, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Delta.

James R. Monger
1922 1998
James R. Monger of Craig, Colo., died Nov. 27, 1998. He was 75.
Monger was born in Cherokee, Okla., Dec. 25, 1922, the son of Horace and Maude (Griffith) Monger. He spent his childhood and school years in Oklahoma and served in the U.S. Army.
He married Betty Lee Gentry on March 6, 1943, in Steamboat Springs, Colo. She died April 22, 1977.
Monger moved to Craig, Colo., in the mid 1940s and was the hotel manager for the Cosgriff Hotel.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1577, Masonic Lodge and the Craig Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry Monger of Craig and James (Roselyn "Penny") Monger of Sun Valley, Idaho; three grandchildren, Toni Monger of Boise, Idaho, Nicole Monger of Breckenridge, Colo., and Erik Monger of Craig.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two sisters, Marge and Phyllis.
Services were held Dec. 1, 1998, at Grant Mortuary with the Friar John Frary officiating.
Cremation was prior to the service.

James Anthony
"Tony" Roberts
James Anthony "Tony" Roberts of Craig and Meeker died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, near Columbus, Neb. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb, 19, 1999, at the First Christian Church. Interment will follow in the Craig Cemetery.

Gene Higgins
1919-1999
Gene Higgins, formerly of Craig, Colo., died Jan. 25, 1999, in Louisville, Colo. He was 80.
On Sept. 26, 1919, in California, Mo., Higgins was born to Charley and Clara Higgins. He moved to Craig in 1949. Higgins worked at J.C. Penney's, Brinkley Hardware, sold cars at Buick Corral's Chevrolet and Chuck Conner's Cadilliac and then owned his own car lot.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughters, Lyn and Carol, and Debra (Tom) Maneotis of Craig; sons, Ron (Jeannie) Higgins of Craig, and Vern Higgins of Denver; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and great-granddaughter, Alish Higgins.
Memorial services were held Feb. 10, 1999, at the home of Tom and Debra Maneotis.

Ian Gavin Messer
1998-1999
Ian Gavin Messer of Craig, Colo., died Feb. 5, 1999, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig.
Messer was born Dec. 1, 1998, in Craig to Ian Daniel and Donitra Lynn (Tomlin) Messer.
Messer is survived by his parents; brother, Torin Daniel, 2; and grandparents, Darrell and Debbie Tomlin of Craig, Becky and Jeff Lakes of Ohio, Danny and Tonya Messer of Indiana, and Phyllis Carter of Indiana.
Services were held Feb. 10, 1999, at Grant Mortuary. Burial was at the Craig Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ray Reed, Nick Yarbrough, Mike Johannas and Ron Wyatt.

Curtis Temples
1927-1999
Curtis Temples of Meeker, Colo., died Feb. 6, 1999, in an auto accident 30 miles north of Meeker. He was 71.
Temples was born Oct. 18, 1927, to Gladys and Sally Temples. He was raised in Talco, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.
Temples married Bobbie Brown, later divorced.
He is survived by sons, Jeff and Tim Temples of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; daughters, Patsy Carnes of Mt. Pleasant, Paula Reeves of Stamps, Ark., JoDee Parrin of Mt. Pleasant, and Kathy Collins of Dangerville, Texas; brothers, Sam (Elsie) Temples of Longview, Texas, and Taylor (Norma) Temples of Vernal, Utah; sisters, Dorothy Lewis of Houma, La., Thelma (Ralph) Thomas of Topock, Ariz., and Eris (Art) Blazk of Fowler, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bud Lee and Joe Temples.

Iris Lyons
Iris Lyons of Craig died Friday, April 16, 1999, at Valley View Manor. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Grant Mortuary. Interment will follow in the Craig Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in care of Grant Mortuary to The Memorial Hospital in memory of the original nursing staff.

Janis Henderson
Janis Henderson of Craig died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Valley View Manor. Services are pending.

Adeline A. Eberle
1905-1999
Adeline A. Eberle of Craig, Colo., died April 6, 1999, in Craig. She was 93.
On April 27, 1905, in Almena, Kan., she was born the daughter of Allen and Laura (Reynard) Short. She moved to Craig in 1917 and was graduated from Craig High School in 1925. She took an extension college course and taught school at the Rock Valley School for three years, the Seventh Day Adventist parochial school for one year and substituted for three years.
On Aug. 17, 1935, she married William Eberle. They lived on a ranch west of Craig.
Eberle is survived by daughters, Pat Tucker of Lahabra, Calif., Sharon Barker of Lahabra, and Carol Buchanan of Craig; sister, Orva Betz of Hesparia, Calif.; brother, Lester Short of Clifton, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Peggy; parents; brothers, Vern and Buck; and sister, Helen.
Services were held April 10, 1999, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Craig.
Pallbearers were Lee Jensen, Ned Miller, Steve Bush, Mike Eberle, Bob Powell and Ralph Paulson.
Interment was at the Craig Cemetery.

Chad Wayne Cookston
1983-1999
Chad Wayne Cookston of Craig, Colo., died April 12, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. He was 16.
On March 14, 1983, in Craig, Cookston was born the son of Wayne and Diane Cookston. He was a sophomore at Moffat County High School. He was a member of the boys swim team, soccer team, Craig Sea Sharks and youth group of First Congregational Church.
He is survived by his mother and father; sister, Shawn Cookston; grandparents, Evelyn Cookston of Montrose, Colo., and Lynn and Bill Hubert of Montrose; and great-grandparents A. M. and Mary Cookston of Denver and Nettie Hubert of Montrose.
Services were held April 16, 1999, at the Craig Middle School auditorium. Interment was at the Craig Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dylan Schopper, Jeremy Thuney, Travis Butts, Wes Lytle, Josh Shipley, Kole Nielson, Nick Davis, Brandon Cramer and Ben Koucherik.
Donations may be made at the Bank of Colorado for a scholarship fund in memory of Cookston.

Joel Earls
Joel Earls of Craig died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at The Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Calvary Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the family.

Gene Higgins
Former Craig resident Gene Higgins died Jan. 25, 1999, in Louisville, Colo. He was 78. Services are pending.

Merle Gore
Longtime Craig resident Merle Gore died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Valley View Manor. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Grant Mortuary. Interment will follow in the Craig Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church in care of Grant Mortuary.

Brian Pickert
Brian Pickert of Craig died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at his home. Services are pending.

Lloyd Warren
Lloyd Warren of Craig died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at The Memorial Hospital. Services are pending.

Wilma Hinkle
Wilma Hinkle of Hayden, Colo., died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at her home. Services are pending.

Joel W. Earls
1949 1999
Joel W. Earls of Craig, Colo., died Jan. 23, 1999, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. He was 49.
He was born Nov. 11, 1949, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Bud and Lenore (Wright) Earls. On April 10, 1979, in Fountain, Colo., he married Debra K. Miller. He lived in Craig for the last 25 years as a heavy equipment operator and worked at Colowyo Coal Company.
He is survived by his wife; son, Jacob Earls of Craig; daughter, Jennifer Earls of Craig; brothers, Mike Earls of Atlanta, and Jeff Earls of Tooele, Utah; sister, Sharon Patterson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and mother, Lenore Earls, of Colorado Springs.
Services were held Jan. 27, 1999, at Calvary Baptist Church. Services concluded at the church. Memorial donations may be sent to the family to help with expenses.

Mary E. Hudson
1916 1999
Mary E. Hudson of Craig, Colo., died Jan. 18, 1999, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. She was 82.
On March 19, 1916, in New Castle, Colo., she was born the daughter of Myron L. and Flora (Ewing) Youmans. She spent her childhood at New Castle, graduating from high school in Grand Junction, Colo. She was a resident of Craig for the last four years.
Hudson is survived by a son, Delton L. Hudson of Casper, Wyo.; daughters, Betty Landon of Craig, Pricilla Chaney of Casper, Rebecca Hudson of Casper and Kathleen (Roger) LaFrance of Casper; sisters, Ruth Peace of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Margaret Mason of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren, Tammy Booker, Colin LaFrance, Melissa Krol, Kirsten Josiah, Jerusha LaFrance and Mathew Landon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, John, Art, Howard, Ralph and Courtney.
Services were held Jan. 23, 1999, at Highland Cemetery in New Castle.

Gary D. Oberhansly
1937 1999
Gary D. Oberhansly of Craig, Colo., died Jan. 17, 1999, in Grand Junction, Colo. He was 61.
Oberhansly was born April 7, 1937, in Neola, Utah, the son of Dean L. and Beulah (Gurr) Oberhansly. He grew up and attended school in Neola. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
On Sept. 18, 1959, he married Lola M. Cook in Bluebell, Utah.
Oberhansly worked as a toolpusher and driller for various companies in the oil fields and later established his own water well drilling company. He was a resident of Craig since 1969.
He is survived by his wife; son, Bernard (Julie) of Vernal, Utah; daughter Deneena (Gene) Higgins of Craig; grandchildren, Toni Lynn, KC and Megan Smith; and brothers, Nick and Burr.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister who died in infancy.
Services were held Jan. 22, 1999, at Grant Mortuary in Craig. Services concluded at the mortuary.
