Theodore L. Haff Jr., of Hillsborough, Calif., retired president of Smith Barney Equity Mutual, died Wednesday, June 11, at Hillsdale Manor in San Mateo, Calif. He was 82. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born Nov. 11, 1920, in East Orange, N.J., he was the son of the late Theodore L. and Gwendolyn N. Haff. He lived in Stamford from 1968 to 1985 before retiring to California to be closer to his family. Mr. Haff was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, discharged as a second lieutenant. He worked for Smith Barney in New York City, retiring as president of Smith Barney Equity Mutual. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Pennywitt Haff of Hillsborough; three sons, Theodore L. Haff III of Kansas City, Kan., John P. Haff of Granite Bay, Calif., and William H. Haff of Bozeman, Mont.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, South El Camino Real, San Mateo. A reception will follow for family and friends at the Burlingame Country Club, 80 New Place Road, Hillsborough. Ruth F. Hagel of Boca Raton, Fla., a longtime Westport resident, died Wednesday, June 12, at Boca Raton Community Hospital. She was 84. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Dec. 3, 1917, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Jennie Lang Block. Mrs. Hagel graduated from Walton High School in the Bronx, N.Y. She wrote mail order copy to put herself through college at night, graduating summa cum laude from New York University's School of Commerce in 1938. Mrs. Hagel wrote advertising for the Book of the Month Club, the New York World Telegram and the New York Herald Tribune. She was an accomplished writer of light verse, and her articles were published in the Westport News and other Westport publications. During her years in Westport, Mrs. Hagel was active in the Parent-Teacher Association and Little League, and she did additional coursework at NYU and the former Danbury State Teachers College. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Hagel of Westport; a son, Keith Hagel of Fairfield; a daughter, Wendy Hagel of Boca Raton; four grandchildren and a niece. Mrs. Hagel was predeceased by a brother, Harry Block; and a sister, Delphine Block Gans. Services will be held at the family's convenience. Judith F. Haims, a longtime Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at home. She was 90. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born Jan. 31, 1913, in Yonkers, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Emanuel Feller and Lena Pompan Feller. Mrs. Haims was a homemaker and lifetime member of Hadassah. She volunteered at a library, reading to children, and supported and mentored a young woman who, without her help, would not have gone to college. She is survived by a daughter, Wendy Handler of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; a son, Bruce D. Haims of New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel H. Haims; and four brothers, Lee Fellowes, Bernie Feller, Jim Feller and Zane Feller. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford. Burial will follow in Beth El cemeteryin Stamford. Barbara Ann Moe Halgowich of Lenoir City, Tenn., a former truck driver, died Monday, Sept. 1, at Park West Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. She was 60. She died of complications from surgery, according to her family. Born Dec. 30, 1942, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Anne Wilmot. Family and friends, who called her "Nanny," will remember her as a great listener and homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Paul Halgowich of Lenoir City; two sons, William Stephan Moe Jr. of Wilmington, N.C. and Jonathan David Moe of Lenoir City; a daughter, Diane Lynn of Lenoir City; a sister, Brenda Cibulis of Huntington; a brother, Charles Wilmot of Darien; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours were held yesterday at the Click Funeral Home, 109 Walnut St., Lenoir City. The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m. today, Thursday Sept. 4 , at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 300 W. 2nd Ave., Lenoir City. The Rev. Mike Gregory will officiate. John H. Halpin, lifelong Stamford resident and insurance agent, died Thursday, Dec. 5, at Mediplex of Stamford. He was 86. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born Nov. 28, 1916, in Stamford, he was the son of the late George and Lillian Eckhard Halpin. Mr. Halpin was an insurance agent for Prudential for more than 33 years. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1933 and attended University of Connecticut at Storrs and the Packard School in New York City. During World War II, Mr. Halpin served with the Third Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star with four Battle Stars. He was a member of the Senior Men's Club of Stamford, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9617 in Springdale and AARP. He is survived by his wife, Edith Rothmann Halpin of Stamford; two sons, John H. Halpin Jr. of Stamford and Robert W. Halpin of Norwalk; and a daughter, Janet Halpin of Stamford. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Bouton & Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home. Ashley Chere Harper of Bear, Del., a senior at Glasgow High School, class of 2004, died Friday, Sept. 12, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del. She was 17. She died of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident, according to her family. Born Sept. 8, 1986, in Wilmington, Del., she was a daughter of Bruce E. Harper of Wilmington and Deidré Grant Morris of Bear, and the stepdaughter James R. Morris of Bear. Ashley was a member of Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, where she sang in the youth and intermediate choirs and was a youth usher. She also was the YPD Delaware Conference president for the 1st Episcopal District. She was a Girl Scout with the Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council. She was previously employed by Damon's and was currently a teller with Commerce Bank, both in Delaware. In addition to her parents, Ashley is survived by a brother, Bruce E. Harper II of Bear; two sisters, Keisha M. Grant of Stamford and Danyel Grant-Bates of New Castle, Del.; a stepsister, Amber L. Hobbs of Dover, Del.; two nieces; one nephew; and many aunts, uncles and other family and friends. Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 19, at Bethel AME Church, 604 N. Walnut St., Wilmington. There will be a funeral service at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the church. Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle. Thomasina Harrell, a longtime resident of Stamford and Norwalk who worked for many years as a nurse's aid for New England Home Care, died Monday, Aug. 5 in Houston, Texas. She was 66. She died of heart failure, according to her family. Born March 28, 1936 in Camden, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Fannie Bell and Thompson Bervard. Mrs. Harrell lived in Stamford and Norwalk for more than 40 years. She is survived by three sons, Randall Kenneth Harrell and Gregory Harrell, both of Norwalk, and Brian Harrell of Camden, S.C.; a daughter, Sylvia Harrell Armstead of Houston, Texas; a step-mother, Mary Bervard of Camden, S.C.; four sisters, Lucille Bervard of Stamford, Elizabeth Robinson of Norwalk, Beverly Smith of Camden, S.C., and Evette Bervard of Atlanta; three brothers, James Fletcher, Gerald Fletcher and Franklin Fletcher, all of Camden, S.C.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Randolph Harrell; a brother, LeRoy Bervard; and a granddaughter. Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. Services will start at 10.a.m. at the funeral home. Eugenia "Jean" Hatcher of Sante Fe, N.M., a former resident of Stamford and Brookfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at El Castillo Retirement Residences in Sante Fe. She was 83. She died of lung cancer, according to her death certificate. Born June 25, 1919, in Brownsville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Marjorie Buchanan. Mrs. Hatcher worked in the medical records department of the former St. Joseph Hospital in Stamford in the 1970s. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Walter J. Hatcher Jr. of Sante Fe; two sons, Walter J. Hatcher III of Bridgewater and Robert E. Hatcher of Middlebury; a daughter, Elizabeth B. Hatcher of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Elizabeth Burnley of Richmond, Va., and Ann McCorkle of Ruckersville, Va.; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Martin. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookfield at a date to be announced. Joseph D. Hayes, a Stamford native, died Sunday, June 20, at Pope John Paul Center for Health in Danbury. He was 91. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born Nov. 3, 1912, in Stamford, he was a son of the late Daniel and Eva Ransom Hayes. Mr. Hayes worked for the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroads for 50 years, until retiring in 1977. He was the personal conductor for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He is survived by a daughter, Joann M. Urban of Bethel; a son, Frederick J. Hayes of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Hayes; two sisters, Dorothy Talbott and Marjorie Connelly; a brother, Floyd Hayes; and a grandson. Natalie Haynes of Danbury, formerly of Springdale, died Friday, Sept. 5, at Danbury Hospital. She was 94. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Aug. 6, 1909, in Wakefield, R.I., she was a daughter of the late Arthur E. and Esther Armstrong Wolcott. Mrs. Haynes was a practical nurse and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Commonwealth Rosemary Chapter of Stamford. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Brush of New Canaan; two sons, Arthur Haynes of Suwanee, Ga., and Frederick Haynes of Marionville, Maine; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold F. Haynes. Services will be private. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemeteryin Darien. Hoyt F. Mable Lockwood Hecker of Newtown, a former Stamford resident, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Danbury Hospital. She was 97. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Nov. 17, 1905, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late James L. and Eva Niebling Lockwood. Mrs. Hecker lived in Stamford for 65 years. She was a longtime active member of the Talmadge Hill Community Church in New Canaan. She lived in Danbury for 10 years, before moving to Newtown about 20 years ago. She will be remembered by her family as a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Hecker is survived by two daughters, Nancy Steinegger of Greenwich and Joan Wuerfele of Naples, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in 1998 by her husband, William L. Hecker. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Talmadge Hill Community Church, Talmadge Hill Road, New Canaan. Jessie Howe Heim, 75, of Middletown, N.J., a former Greenwich resident, died Monday, Aug. 25, at the King James Care Center of Middletown. She was 75. She died of Alzheimer's disease, according to her family. Born Nov. 20, 1927, in Darien, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Amanda Russell Howe. Mrs. Heim was a homemaker. She is survived by a son, Douglas Heim of Fairfield; a daughter, Sharon Pellegrino of Colts Neck, N.J.; two sisters, Dorothy Howe of Darien and Lois Stenek-Kodz of Wilmington, Del.; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John T. Heim Jr. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at St. Agnes Church, 247 Stanwich Road, Greenwich. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 35 Parsonage Road, Greenwich. Doris Linnea Berglund Hensley, a longtime Stamford resident, died Sunday, June 20, at home. She was 92. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born May 27, 1912, in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Hilda Berglund. Mrs. Hensley graduated in 1931 from Waukegan Township High School in Waukegan, Ill. She was an executive secretary at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago before her marriage in 1941. In 1947, she moved to Stamford and became a homemaker. She worked with Senior Services of Stamford as an independent contractor, providing recreation and crafts programs. She was a longtime member of the Over-Sixty Club in Stamford. A life member of Halloween Yacht Club in Stamford, Mrs. Hensley enjoyed boating on her husband's cruiser, Linnea. She was a parishioner of First Congregational Church of Stamford for more than 50 years. An avid tag saler, Mrs. Hensley was an antiques and collectibles dealer at the Stamford Antiques Association in Springdale in the 1970s and early 1980s. She sold some of her collection on eBay. She played tennis and golf, and swam. An artist, she was known for her handmade Christmas ornaments and decorative Easter eggs. She painted and sewed. She is survived by her son, William B. Hensley of Stamford; four nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her husband, William L. Hensley; a daughter, Kathryn Ann Hensley; two brothers, Harold Berglund and Newell Berglund; and two sisters, Myrtle Macklin and Violet Nutilla. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, at First Congregational Church chapel, Walton Place, Stamford. Burial will be private. Claire C. Hesselbach, a longtime Stamford resident and teacher, died Friday, Oct. 10, at home. She was 76. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born May 16, 1927, in Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Curley Claffey. Mrs. Hesselbach graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the College of Mt. St. Vincent in Riverdale, N.Y. in 1948. She went on to work as a teacher, aide and substitute in Stamford Public Schools for many years. She lived in Stamford since 1959. She was a member of St. Leo's craft group in Stamford and the Stamford Woman's Club. A devout Catholic, she also was a parishioner of St. Bridget of Ireland Church in Stamford. She is survived by a son, Daniel Hesselbach of Franklin, Wisc.; a daughter, Diane Jackson of Stamford; a sister, Rosemary Glenn of Stamford; and four granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Hesselbach; and a brother, Joseph Claffey. Calling hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Leo P. Horst Hetzel of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a former Stamford resident and Volkswagen mechanic in Greenwich, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach. He was 63. He died of a stroke, according to his family. Born Feb. 23, 1939, in Frankfurt, Germany, he was the son of the late Heinrich and Elisabeth Saenger Hetzel. Mr. Hetzel moved to Myrtle Beach from Ridgefield in June. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was a Volkswagen mechanic for many years for Pray Volkswagen of Greenwich. He was a member of the German Club and an avid soccer player in Stamford and Ridgefield. He is survived by his wife, Irene Paterson Hetzel of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two sisters, Maria Claus of Naples, Fla., and Gisela Trimarchi of Weston. Tiava Jamorra Higgs, a Norwalk resident, died Friday, Sept. 12, in Bridgeport. She was 2. Her death has been ruled a homicide, according to Bridgeport police. Born Aug. 12, 2001, in Bridgeport, she was a daughter of James and Terano Higgs of Norwalk. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Demont Battle and Abe Prior, both of Norwalk; a sister, Yashika Higgs of Norwalk; a maternal great-grandfather, Richard Watson of North Carolina; a paternal grandmother, Lettie Williams of Stamford; and aunts, uncles and cousins. Kenneth Hill, a lifelong Darien resident, died Monday, Sept. 1 at home. He was 52. He died of a seizure, according to his family. Born June 21, 1951, in Norwalk, he was a son of Donald and Joan Hill of Darien. Mr. Hill graduated from Darien High School in 1969 and attended Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, where he played football. In 1971, he joined the National Guard for five years. He is a veteran of the Noroton Heights Fire Department and a member of the Darien Boat Club. He coached YMCA soccer and basketball, and Little League Baseball and Junior Football in Darien. He was a member of St. Luke's Parish and worked for Northeast Utilities in Norwalk. He was an avid golfer and gourmet cook, and enjoyed fishing and a good political debate. He also built his home in Darien. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Beth Hill of Darien; a brother, Bruce Hill of Darien; two daughters, Melissa Simpson of Woodbridge, Va., and Mikaela Hill of Darien; two sons, Ken Hill Jr. of Bluemont, Va., and Colton Hill of Darien; a granddaughter; and two nieces and three nephews. Calling hours will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien. Clarence E. "Sonny" Hines, of High Point, N.C. and formerly of Stamford, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was 57. He died of heart failure, according to his family. Born Aug. 16, 1945, in High Point, he was the son of the late Katie Hines and the lateEddie Little. He was predeceased by his wife, Pamela McElvery. Mr. Hines graduated from William Penn High School in High Point, where he met his wife. He lived in Stamford for many years. He enjoyed reading and was particularly interested in science. He is survived by two sons, Quincy Hines of Stamford, and Trevor Hinesof High Point, formerly of Stamford; two daughters, Shanea Hines and Kodi Hines, both High Point, formerly of Stamford,; two sisters, Azalee Little of Randallstown, Md., and Odessa McCall of High Point ; a granddaughter; three nieces; and three nephews. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Upper Room Baptist Church, 166 Ravina Lane, High Point. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. at the church. Shawn T. Hiscock of Beacon Falls, an electrical apprentice at Vivian Electric Inc. in Greenwich, died Wednesday, Aug. 13 at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven. He was 18. He died of injuries from an automobile accident, according to his family. Born June 21, 1985 in Stamford, he was the son of Timothy W. Hiscock of Beacon Falls and Diane Lee Hiscock Ethier of Naugatuck. Mr. Hiscock was a member of the Naugatuck Baseball League in Naugatuck, and a communicant of St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Naugatuck. Besides his parents, he is survived by four brothers, Stephen Hiscock and Christopher Ethier, both of Naugatuck, and Jacob Ethier and Jeffrey Ethier, both of West Hartford; two sisters, Michele Ethier of Naugatuck and Charisse Ethier of West Hartford; his paternal grandfather, Walter C. Hiscock of Stamford; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Lee Avalos of Naugatuck; four cousins; three uncles and three aunts. The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 16 at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Naugatuck. Burial followed at Grove cemeteryin Naugatuck. Karen Brown Hoffman, a Norwalk resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, at home. She was 50. She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family. Born March 31, 1953, in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Willie James and Mary Margaret Brown. Mrs. Hoffman graduated from Our Lady of Grace School in Indianapolis and attended Indiana University. She moved to Norwalk in 1983. Mrs. Hoffman was a member of St. John Church in Darien. From 1989 to 1998, she worked as a sales representative at Smart Kids, a retail toy store in Greenwich. She was a receptionist for CORE Managers in Norwalk from 1999 to 2001, and worked at Facultative Resources in Stamford from 2001 to 2002. Mrs. Hoffman was a former professional model with an agency in Los Angeles. She designed men's and women's clothes. She is survived by her husband, David K. Hoffman of Norwalk and St. Augustine, Fla.; a daughter, Bianca Hoffman of Bridgeport; and a son, Hunter Hoffman of Bridgeport. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at St. John Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien.
