James Everett Raymond of Fruitland Park, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 2, at home. He was 87. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born June 11, 1915, in Stamford, he was the son of the late Everett Raymond and stepson of the late May Raymond. Mr. Raymond lived in Stamford most of his life until moving to Fruitland Park in 1983. He owned and operated several Mobil service stations in Stamford. In the years before his retirement, he was the owner and operator of James E. Raymond Automotive Service, an automobile parts remanufacturing business in Stamford. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a submarine sea cat in the Pacific. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 899 in Stamford and past commodore of Viking Yacht Club in Norwalk. He also was a life member of the Ponus Yacht Club in Stamford. His wife, Alice H. Raymond, died Monday, Dec. 16. He is survived by a son, James H. Raymond of Idstein, Germany; and two grandsons. Services were held in Fruitland Park. Beyers Funeral Home, 1123 W. Main St., Leesburg, Fla., handled the arrangements.

Nessim Gabriel Jarufe, a sales executive and Stamford resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 23 at home. He was 47. He died of a heart attack, according to his family. Born July 12, 1956 in Quiota, Chile, he was a son of Olga Jarufe of Chile and the late Gabriel Jarufe. Mr. Nessim worked as a sales executive for A-1 Construction Inc. of Clifton, N.J. He lived in Stamford for more than 14 years. Besides his mother, Mr. Nessim is survived by his wife of nine years, Barbara Bradshaw Hussey of Stamford; two children, Kylie Jarufe and Alex Jarufe, both of Stamford; three sisters, Celia, Edith and Nuhad; and three brothers, Johnny, Alfredo and Daniel. He was predeceased by an infant son, Tyler Jarufe. Calling hours will be announced at a later date. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 469 North St., Greenwich. Burial will be private. Allan V. Jay Jr., a longtime New Canaan resident, died Wednesday, June 16, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 77. He died of complications from cancer, according to his family. He was born June 18, 1926, in Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. Jay was raised in Chicago and graduated from Parker High School, where he was senior class president, an officer in the Senior Honor Society, co-captain of the varsity tennis team and a member of the varsity basketball team that won the 1942 city championship. He became the youngest Boy Scout in Chicago to become an Eagle Scout. Mr. Jay attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 15 months. He earned a master's degree in business administration and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was founder and president of Videodex, a national marketing research corporation based in Chicago and New York that specialized in broadcast media. A jogger and tennis player, Mr. Jay was a member of the New York Athletic Club for more than 50 years. He was a member of New Canaan Field Club and Westchester Country Club. At the Field Club, he was tennis chairman and on the board of governors. He was co-chairman of the town of New Canaan Tennis Committee and founded the parent-child tournament in the town. He was also co-founder of the Southern New England Jr. Tennis Championship and held the father-son title with his son and the senior men's doubles title at the Field Club. He was a charter member of the Citizens Continuing Committee on Conservation, the Boy Scouts Committee, Major Gifts Captain of the New Canaan United Way and a member of the New Canaan Senior Men's Club. He established the Cameron Human Kindness Award recognizing charitable deeds of New Canaan residents. Mr. Jay is survived by his wife of 26 years, Peggy Jay of New Canaan; his son, Allan Jay III of Greenwich; and three grandchildren. A memorial service and a reception will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, 178 Oenoke Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the C. Theodore Jeffrey Jr. of Stamford, a former security guard, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Bread and Roses in Georgetown. He was 57. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born June 15, 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Theodore Jeffrey Sr. and Georgia Beaty Jeter. Mr. Jeffrey was a graduate of Morris College in Rock Hill, S.C. He worked as a security guard for Allied Security in Bridgeport. Before that, he was a security guard at Fleet Bank in New Canaan. He was a longtime New Canaan resident before moving to Stamford a few months ago. He was a member of the NAACP and the Democratic Party, and volunteered at the American Red Cross in New Canaan. He is survived by a daughter, Mesha Morris of Sanford, Fla.; three brothers, Jerry Hopkins of Bridgeport, Terry Jeter of Charlotte, N.C., and Thomas Jeter of Union, S.C.; a sister, Judith Jeter of Union, S.C.; an aunt; an uncle; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Carrie Bouie and Alice Gilliam. Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Community Baptist Church, 174 Cherry St., New Canaan. Mary D. Jerman of St. Luis Obispo, Calif., a former Stamford and Darien resident, died Monday, Sept. 15 at Woodside Nursing Center in San Luis Obispo. She was 89. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Aug. 11, 1914, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late John and Susie Steblar. Mrs. Jerman was a retired nurse who worked at the former St. Joseph Hospital in Stamford for 35 years. She retired to Palm Coast, Fla., in 1977 and moved to California in 1998. She is survived by her son, Peter J. Jerman of Concord, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Lou Sumi of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Jerman. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Bosak-Talboys Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford. John Christian Johansen III, a resident of New Canaan for more than 40 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Greenwich Hospital. He was 68. He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family. Born March 17, 1935, he was a son of the late John Christian Johansen Jr. and June Mick Johansen. Mr. Johansen graduated from Stepinac High School in New York. He earned a bachelor's degree from Fordham University and a master's degree in business administration with honors from New York University. He received a postgraduate certificate in international business from Harvard Business School. He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s, before being honorably discharged as a pilot. He continued to fly recreationally throughout his life. Mr. Johansen served in senior management for Fortune 500 companies, including General Electric, General Foods, American Can, Avis and New England Dairies. He was a consultant on Glenn Miller and the Army Air Force Band to Yale University's music department. An avid volunteer, he worked with New Covenant House of Stamford, AmeriCares and New Canaan Historical Society. He was a charter member of Waveny Pool Committee and a committee member of Cancer Care. He volunteered with The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, based in New Haven. Mr. Johansen was a member of the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan, Woodway Country Club of Darien and the New Canaan Winter Club. He is a former board member of the Convent of Sacred Heart in Greenwich. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Busse Johansen of New Canaan; a daughter, Kathleen Marie Johansen Stagg; and a brother, Peter Johansen of Greenwich. He was predeceased by his son, Paul John Johansen, in 1979. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan. Stacey Lyn Granelli Johnson, a former resident of Stamford, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Calif. She was 33. She died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, according to her family. Born May 17, 1969, in Stamford, she was a daughter of Richard L. and Sandra Garaffa Granelli of Stamford. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Westhill High School in Stamford, and received bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. She was an English teacher at Valley View High School in Ontario, Calif. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Jack Johnson of Fair Oak Ranch, Calif.; a sister, Krista Granelli of Stamford; a maternal grandmother, Irene Garaffa of Ossining, N.Y; two aunts; one uncle and many cousins. Muriel Rose Johnson, a Wilton resident for the past 10 years, died Sunday, June 20, at home. She was 85. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Oct. 21, 1918, in Canaan, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Asher Hatch. Before making her home in Wilton, Mrs. Johnson lived in Pittsfield, Mass., for many years. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Wilton. Mrs. Johnson is survived by three daughters, Britta Nayden of Wilton, Joy Kiah of Windsor and Andrea Johnson of Red Hook, N.Y.; three brothers, Frank Hatch of Port Orange, Fla., James Hatch of Port Salerno, Fla., and Ward Hatch of Lebanon, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 31 years, Andrew Johnson; and a daughter, Donna Archibald. Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Bouton Funeral Home, 31 W. Waldo Frank Jones, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 1 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 91. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born Aug. 15, 1911 in Greenwich, he was the son of the late William F. and Alice Jones. Mr. Jones worked as a production manager for Electrolux Co. in Greenwich for 44 years before he retired in 1976. He is survived three sons, David W. Jones of Greenwich, Michael P. Jones of Norwalk and Joseph W. Jones of Tampa, Fla.; three grandsons; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Herald Jones; three brothers and five sisters. Calling hours will be 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Nicholas F. Eddie Jones, a Stamford resident for more than 32 years, died Monday, Feb. 3, at Stamford Hospital. He was 72. He died of cardiopulmonary arrest, according to his family. Born March 26, 1930, in Lockhart, Ala., he was a son of the late Tom and Roberta Jones. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Jones was a parishioner of Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Stamford, where he was a member of the usher board and the male chorus. He also belonged to a Stamford post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Jones was an auto mechanic for eight years with the city of Stamford. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Jones of Stamford; a son, Eddie Jones Jr. of Flowerview, Fla.; a daughter, Minnie Lois Wakins of Baton Rouge, La.; three brothers, John Lee Jones of New York City, Coleman Jones of Andalusia, Ala., and Lamar Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Gladys Washington-Jones of De Funiak Springs, Fla., and Lee Brooks of Huntsville, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews. Former GE head dies at 86
Reginald H. "Reg" Jones, a longtime Greenwich resident who rose through the ranks to lead General Electric Co., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, at his home in Greenwich. He was 86. He died following a long illness, his family said. Mr. Jones spent his entire career with GE. He joined the company's business training course in 1939 and rose through the ranks to serve as chairman and chief executive officer from 1972 to 1981. "The entire GE family mourns the passing of Reg Jones, a great business leader, a gentleman and a good friend," said Jeffrey Immelt, the company's current chairman and CEO. "During his illustrious 42-year career at GE, Reg was a strong leader for GE, a model of integrity and a great statesman for the entire business community. "Much of GE's success over the years has been due to Reg's clear thinking and sharp strategic vision for the company," Immelt said. "Reg taught many of us what leadership is about through the way he conducted himself every day. We will miss him." Former GE chairman and CEO Jack Welch, who succeeded Mr. Jones, said, "Reg was a great man, a great leader, a great teacher, a quintessential business statesman and a true friend." Born July 11, 1917, in Stoke-on-Trent, England, the son of the late Alfred J. and Gertrude Cartledge Jones. He moved with his family to the United States when he was 8 years old, settling in Trenton, N.J. He graduated in 1939 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he met Grace Butterfield Cole, his wife of 63 years. Three years after starting the GE training course in 1939 he began an eight-year tour as a traveling auditor, then moved into general management, serving as manager of company businesses in the consumer, utility, industrial, construction and distribution fields. In 1968, he became the company's chief financial officer, and was elected senior vice president two years later. In 1972, he became president, then chairman and chief executive officer of General Electric. As CEO, he brought new strategic direction to GE, emphasizing strong internal growth fostered by research and development, strategic planning and the introduction of the sector structure that "prepared the organization and the people to meet General Electric's long-range growth opportunities in the decade ahead," in Mr. Jones' words. Sales at the company more than doubled under Mr. Jones' leadership, and earnings nearly tripled. Mr. Jones advised four presidents on economic matters, and in 1980 he was named the most respected U.S. business executive in a Wall Street Journal/Gallup survey. He also served as the chairman of the Business Council in 1979-1980 and was co-chairman of The Business Roundtable from 1974 to 1980. After retiring, Mr. Jones served on the boards of several major companies, including Merck & Co., Bethlehem Steel and Federated Department Stores, as well as continuing to serve as a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. He received honorary doctorate degrees from Penn, Harvard, Yale, Notre Dame, Howard and Colgate universities. A longtime Greenwich resident, Mr. Jones was a member of the Round Hill Club, the Blind Brook Club and The Patterson Club of Fairfield. In 1982, he was knighted in a ceremony at the British Embassy in Washington. In addition to his wife, who resides in Greenwich, Mr. Jones is survived by a son, the Rev. Keith Edwin Jones of Summit, N.J.; a daughter, Grace Seymour Jones Vineyard of Hendersonville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Second Congregational Church, 139 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich. Florence Filanowski Joseph, formerly of Stamford, died Sunday, Dec. 29, in Bristol Hospital. She was 75. She died of complications from a blood clot, according to her family. Born May 20, 1927, in St. Clair, Pa., she was a daughter of the late John and Pauline Filanowski. Mrs. Joseph was raised in Fairfield and lived most of her adult life in Stamford until recently moving to Bristol. She attended St. Anthony School in Fairfield and was employed as a sales clerk for Caldor department store before her retirement. Mrs. Joseph was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Joseph. She is survived by two sons, John Joseph of Fairfield and Alan DeLuca of Stamford; two daughters, Susan Gillace of New Milford and Sandra Joseph of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers, Anthony Filanowski of Massachusetts and Michael Filanowski of Maryland; two sisters, Albina Duffy of Bristol and Mary Munrow of Norwalk; and six grandchildren. Alfred L. Judge Jr.
Alfred L. Judge Jr., a lifelong Stamford resident and founder of an executive search firm, died Monday, June 21, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 60. He died of complications from kidney failure, according to his family. Born Nov. 11, 1943, in Stamford, he was a son of Dorothy Pecoraro Judge of Darien and the late Alfred L. Judge Sr. Mr. Judge was chairman and past president of the Cambridge Group, a Westport-based executive search firm he founded in 1976. He was a member of the National Association of Personnel Services, the National Association of Physician Recruiters, the American Statistical Association, and the Connecticut Association of Personnel Services. Known as "Al" by his friends, Mr. Judge was active in sports as a young man. He was a star athlete of Stamford High School's football and baseball teams, and a lifelong New York Yankees fan. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 39 years, Diane Maksimowicz Judge of Stamford; two daughters, Allison Marotta of New Canaan and Lisa Cipri of Wilton; two sisters, Dorothy Mead and Patricia Harris, both of Stamford; three brothers, James V. Judge and Edward Judge, both of Stamford, and Charles Judge of Darien; and three grandchildren. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at Nicholas F. Anna "Anita" Judice, a homemaker and lifelong Stamford resident, died Sunday, May 4 at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. She was 77. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Sept. 20, 1925 in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Victoria Saullo Calomino Sr. Mrs. Judice was a member of the Sacred Heart Church Rosary Altar Society in Stamford and did volunteer work at the church rectory. She was a graduate of the former Shorts Secretarial School in Stamford. She is survived by a son, Frank D. Judice Jr. of North Granby; two daughters, Anita L. Marchetti and Leslie A. Judice, both of Greenwich; a brother, Michael A. Calomino Jr. of Stamford; three sisters, Ida C. Magnifico, Rose L. Calomino and Dolores Berger, all of Stamford; and six grandchildren. Earl Junes, a Stamford resident for more than 40 years, died Thursday, Feb. 27, at Stamford Hospital. He was 79. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born Oct. 27, 1923, in Kingstree, S.C., he was the son of the late Susie and Dock Junes. Mr. Junes was a former machine operator at Stamford Rolling Mills, where he worked for about 15 years. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Stamford, where he volunteered on election days. He is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Junes; and a sister, Maggie Sabb. Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 29 Grove St., Stamford. Josephine J. Kahn, a longtime Greenwich resident, died Sunday, Feb. 9, at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home. She was 88. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born Feb. 27, 1914, in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late Joseph H. and Edith Mallison James. Mrs. Kahn was a retired Greenwich Public Schools teacher. She was a descendant of one of the immigrant families that traveled on the Mayflower. Mrs. Kahn interrupted her career as a social worker to volunteer for the American Red Cross in the Pacific theater during World War II. She was a student of history, an avid reader and enjoyed traveling and weaving. She is survived by her son, James E. Kahn of Greenwich; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Evans Kahn; a daughter, Virginia G. Perez; and two sisters, Mary Alice Miller and Virginia Weniger. No calling hours are planned. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich. Burial will be private.
