May 4, 2003 Claire F. Mathews, a longtime Greenwich resident and retired law librarian, died Friday, May 2, at The Nathaniel Witherell in Greenwich. She was 95. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born July 20, 1907, in New Haven, she was the daughter of the late Matthew E. and Anne J. Reilly Flaherty. Mrs. Mathews grew up in West Haven, graduating from West Haven High School. She worked briefly for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad before she got married in 1939. She had been a Greenwich resident since 1944. She ran the law library at Whitman & Ransom, formerly Hirschberg, Pettengill & Strong, in Greenwich. She was also an avid swimmer at Greenwich Point and a world traveler. She is survived by a son, Thomas E. Mathews of Suffield; a daughter, Claire A. Mathews of Greenwich; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas O. Mathews; and a daughter, Sheila E. Mathews. Calling hours will be 3:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 469 North St., Greenwich. October 2, 2003 Mirko Matijevic, a mechanical engineer from Greenwich, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, at home. He was 63. He died of a heart attack, according to his family. Born Dec. 18, 1939, in Zagreb, Croatia, he was a son of the late Janja Karaga Matijevic. Mr. Matijevic retired from Mechtronics in Stamford, where he worked as a mechanical engineer. He is survived by two sons, John Matijevic of Ridgefield and Michael Matijevic of Greenwich; a brother, Drago Karaga of Zagreb; a sister, Vesna Karaga of Zagreb; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Branka Matijevic, in 1999. Calling hours will be 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich. A service will follow at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 35 Parsonage Road, Greenwich.

October 15, 2003 Mary Beth Matlak of Vero Beach, Fla., a former Darien resident, died Sunday, Oct. 12. at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach. She was 60. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born Oct. 17, 1942, in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late Louis Land and Lauette Iredell. Mrs. Matlak moved to Vero Beach from Darien 12 years ago. She was a member of St. Helen Church in Vero Beach. She is survived by her son, Edward Robert Matlak Jr. of Flanders, N.J.; two daughters, Kathaleen deVroedt and Dawn Matlak, both of Vero Beach, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. She was predeaceased by her husband, Edward R. Matlak Sr. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Strunk Funeral Home, 916 17th St., Vero Beach. Agnes H. Mayes October 3, 2003 Agnes H. Mayes of New Milford, a former Stamford nurse, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, at New Milford Hospital. She was 89. She died of natural causes, according to her conservator, Brian Farrell. Born April 19, 1914, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late George Millar Haughs and Agnes Findley Haughs. Mrs. Mayes lived in Stamford all her life until she moved to New Milford about five years ago. She worked as a nurse in private practice in Stamford and was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross in Stamford. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Mayes. Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 6, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, with a funeral service at noon. The Rev. Bart Gage will officiate. January 16, 2003 Anne Hanrahan Mayores, a lifelong Stamford resident and homemaker, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, at St. Camillus Health Center in Stamford. She was 84. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born June 16, 1918, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Anne Hanrahan. Mrs. Mayores was a member for many years of St. Mary Church, where she was active with the Rosary Society and ran the thrift shop. She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen W. Mayores; a daughter, Marianne Mayores; two brothers, Daniel and Jack Hanrahan; and a sister, Patricia Mary Hanrahan. Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Nicholas F. August 11, 2003 Kevin M. McBennett, a lifelong Norwalk resident who worked for Aquarius Pool Service in New Canaan, died Saturday, Aug. 9, at home. He was 42. He died of a heart attack, according to his family. Born Dec. 3, 1960, in Norwalk, he was a son of Patrick G. and Helen-Marie Beers McBennett of Norwalk. Mr. McBennett was past president of the Ferris Hill Club in Norwalk and served in the U.S. Navy. Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Kathleen Sasloe and Ann Raab, both of Norwalk, and Joan McBennett of Stratford; three brothers, Patrick G. McBennett Jr. of Stratford, Peter J. McBennett of Ashland, Ore., and Robert G. McBennett of Norwalk; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. June 13, 2003 William Markham McCardell of Stamford, a retired oil company executive, died Tuesday, June 10, at Greenwich Hospital. He was 79. He died of cardiopulmonary arrest, according to his family. Born Nov. 1, 1923, in Houston, he was the son of the late William Kenon and Margaret Bachmann McCardell. Mr. McCardell grew up Houston. He earned a bachelor's degree from Rice University in 1948 and a master's degree in chemical engineering from California Institute of Technology in 1949. A World War II veteran, Mr. McCardell served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He married Martha McDonald McCardell on Aug. 27, 1949. Mr. McCardell lived Houston, Chicago and Pelham, N.Y. He lived in Cos Cob from 1970 to 1976 before returning to Houston. He then lived in New York City before retiring to Stamford. Mr. McCardell worked for Exxon from 1949 to 1983, retiring as president of Exxon Minerals. Starting in the research department, he held various positions, including chief research engineer, corporate planning, various marketing management positions and vice president of the mining and synthetic fuels department. He was a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Phi Lambda Epsilon. He also was a member of Riverside Yacht Club in Greenwich. In addition to his wife, Mr. McCardell is survived by a daughter, Carol McCardell of Glencoe, Ill.; a son, Stephen McCardell of Appleton, Wis.; and three grandchildren. No calling hours are planned. December 19, 2001 Mary G. McClure of Alpharetta, Ga., a former longtime Stamford resident, died Saturday, Dec. 15, in Atlanta. She was 60. She died of pulmonary fibrosis, according to her family. Born July 23, 1941, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Marguerite Burdick Grant. She is survived by her husband, William McClure of Alpharetta; two daughters, Jane Desillier of Peoria, Ill., and Betsy Paganucci of Marietta, Ga.; two sons, William Edward McClure of Atlanta and David McClure of Lilburn, Ga.; three sisters, Eleanor Kohn of Stamford, Karen Mehrtens of Johnson, Vt., and Debbie Short of Branford; and four grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today, Dec. 19, at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody, Ga., with the Rev. Joe Corbett officiating. October 22, 2002 James McCormick, a Torrington resident, died Saturday, Oct. 19, at Cherry Brook Health Care Center in Canton. He was 74. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born Nov. 1, 1927, in Stamford, he was a son of the late William H. McCormick Sr. and Margaret Fox McCormick. Mr. McCormick grew up in Stamford. He moved to Torrington in 1967. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for 25 years for the state Department of Transportation in Torrington. Mr. McCormick was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Andrea Barbeau McCormick of Torrington; and a son, William H. McCormick II of Stamford. He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas McCormick and William McCormick. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at St. Bridget's Church, 7 River Road, Cornwall. February 12, 2003 Sandra "Dottie" Stroman McCoy, a 35-year Norwalk resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Norwalk Hospital. She was 50. She died of respiratory failure, according to her family. Born Dec. 4, 1952, in Stamford, she was a daughter of Aleana Stroman of Norwalk and the late Sam "Deaddy" Stroman Jr. Mrs. McCoy graduated with high honors when she was 16 from the former Rippowam High School in Stamford. She then became office manager for White Tower Diner in Stamford and later worked for 30 years at Bradlees Corp. in Norwalk. Mrs. McCoy was a devout Christian and served as president of the choir at Miracle Temple in Norwalk for 20 years, where the Rev. Dr. Joseph Clemmons was her pastor. She then joined Union Baptist Church in Stamford, where the Rev. Dr. Robert Perry was her senior pastor. She was a licensed missionary. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Demetrias Wayne "Jimboy" McCoy of New Jersey; two daughters, Sandra Melissa McCoy and Aleana Amie McCoy, both of Norwalk; a sister, Gloria Aleana Stroman-McCready of Norwalk; four brothers, Sam Stroman III, Willie James Stroman, Larry Leon Stroman and Joseph Blake Stroman, all of Norwalk; a grandson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Union Baptist Church, 817 Newfield Ave., Stamford. The Rev. Dr. Robert Perry will officiate. January 16, 2003 Elizabeth M. "Betty" McDonald of Belleview, Fla., a Stamford native, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Estelle's Hospice House in Ocala, Fla. She was 80. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born May 13, 1922, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Charles Smith. Mrs. McDonald worked as a HAMM radio operator on The Old Goats Network, call letters W1MRJ. She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Belleview and the Knights of Columbus. She was a toe and tap dancer. She moved to Vermont from Stamford in 1966 and to Belleview in 1987. She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. McDonald of Belleview; a son, Thomas S. McDonald of Weirsdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles E. McDonald. November 23, 2002 Anne P. McGraw of Darien, wife of Harold W. McGraw Jr., chairman emeritus of The McGraw-Hill Cos., died Thursday, Nov. 21, at home. She was 84. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born Dec. 28, 1917, in Minneapolis, she was the daughter of the late John and Anne Per-Lee. Mrs. McGraw received her a bachelor's degree from Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. She was a Darien resident the past 52 years. Throughout her life, she was active in numerous volunteer and charitable endeavors involving education, literacy and health-care concerns. She served on the board of directors of the former St. Joseph's Hospital in Stamford. She was active with the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, Stamford Hospital, Norwalk Hospital and the Darien Public Library. In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by three sons, Harold W. "Terry" McGraw III of Darien, Thomas McGraw of Ponce Inlet, Fla., and Robert McGraw of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; a daughter, Suzanne McGraw of Darien; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien. January 4, 2002 Terrence J. McKee Terrence J. McKee of Fall City, Wash., died Monday, Dec. 24, at home. He was 56. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born Dec. 27, 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Ethel McKee of Glastonbury. Mr. McKee spent his high school years in Stamford. After graduating from Stamford High School in 1963, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Upon his discharge, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut. He earned a master's degree in linguistics from University of California at San Diego. He taught English as a second language nationally and internationally before settling in Washington. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Carol of Fall City; a brother, Tommy of Glastonbury; a sister, Ellen of Haywood, Calif.; a brother, Billy of Stamford; and many nieces and nephews. An open celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Claddagh Suite at Temple Bar, 120 Bedford St., Stamford.

February 22, 2002 Andrew J. McKnight, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Stamford Hospital. He was 73. He died of cardiac arrest, according to his death certificate. Born June 22, 1928 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Catherine Kane McKnight. Mr. McKnight worked as a driver for Schaeffer Brewing Co. of Bridgeport for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the Glenbrook Athletic Club and an avid golfer. He is survived by his longtime companion, Frances A. McDonough of Stamford; a daughter, Colleen; a grandson; three granddaughters; and many cousins. January 31, 2003 Mary A. McMahon of Stamford, a former Baldwin Gegenheimer employee, died Thursday, Jan. 30, at St. Camillus Health Center in Stamford. She was 97. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born June 18, 1905, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Patrick Thomas and Alice McKenna Costello. Mrs. McMahon graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester. She was a homemaker. At age 65, after raising her family, Mrs. McMahon worked at Baldwin Gegenheimer in Stamford. She is survived by a daughter, Alice Bonvenuto of Ridgefield; three sons, Thomas McMahon of Hamden, James McMahon of Windsor, England, and Brian McMahon of San Francisco; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. February 18, 2003 Irene Martin McMillan, a former Stamford resident, died Saturday, Feb. 15 in Dallas, Texas, where she lived for the past seven years with her daughter. She was 83. She died of heart-related problems, according to her family. Born Feb. 4, 1920 in Stamford, she was the youngest of the seven children of Julia Zboyan and Michael P. Martin. Mrs. McMillan was a lifelong Stamford resident until she moved to Dallas in 1995. She worked in the pattern department at Conde Nast Publications on the Post Road in Greenwich in her early years and later became a tenured employee of the Darien Sport Shop, retiring from there in 1984. She is survived by her son, Thomas McMillan Jr. of Eau Claire, Wisc.; her daughter, Gloria McMillan-Burke of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Stamford; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas P. McMillan Sr.; two sisters, Mary Ballo and Julia Dora; and four brothers, Ty Martin, Andrew Martin, George Martin and John Martin. A memorial service will be held at All Saint's Church in Dallas on Monday, Feb. 24 to bless the ashes of the deceased. A Mass of Christian Burial and interment will take place in Stamford this summer to honor the remains of Thomas and Irene McMillan. June 10, 2003 Margaret Ann McMillian of Bridgeport died Wednesday, June 4, at Bridgeport Hospital. She was 38. She died of congestive heart failure, according to her family. Born Nov. 7, 1964, in Camden, Ala., she was a daughter of George Powell Sr. of Stamford and Barbara McMillian of Jersey City, N.J. Miss McMillian was a former resident of New London, Norwalk and Stamford. She worked for Cosco Wholesalers in Norwalk for several years. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her fiance, Timothy Scherod Martin of Bridgeport; a son, Jerry McMillian of New London; three daughters, Eleanor McMillian and Tina McMillian, both of New London, and Melissa McMillian of Middletown; two brothers, Christopher McMillian of Mississippi and Robert Thompson of Jersey City; two sisters, Diane McMillian of Norwalk and Francine McMillian of Stamford; a paternal grandmother, Rosa Nell Powell of Camden; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. William J. McMorris December 13, 2003 William J. McMorris, a Stamford resident since 1967, died Thursday, Dec. 11, at home. He was 71. He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family. Born July 19, 1932, in New York City, he was the son of the late James and Ida Neumaier McMorris. Mr. McMorris worked at Olin Corporation in Stamford, beginning his career in data processing. He held various management positions for more than 30 years, retiring in 1998 as manager of casualty risks. He was a daily communicant of Holy Spirit Church in Stamford. Mr. McMorris graduated from St. John's University in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a bachelor of science degree in 1953 and then went on to receive his master's degree in business administration from New York University in 1959. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Bridgeport School of Law in 1984. Mr. McMorris served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He enjoyed the beach since his early days in Rockaway, N.Y., and his retirement years in the Hamptons. Mr. McMorris spent many nights rooting for the St. John's basketball team with his sons and grandsons. His deepest passion was his love of his "Bride AG." He is survived by his wife, Agnes M. McKenna McMorris of Stamford; four sons, Donald McMorris of Doylestown, Pa., William McMorris of Wilton, David McMorris of Trumbull and Peter McMorris of Horsham, Pa.; two sisters, Rita Molloy of Greenwich and Dorothy Dunbar of Plainview, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. December 27, 2002 Arvilla McMorrow, a bookkeeper and a Portland resident, died Monday, Dec. 22, a Haven Health Care in Cromwell. She was 83. She died of natural causes, according to the family. Born Oct. 15, 1919, in Leighton, Pa., she was a daughter of the late William and Ida Green Bollinger. She lived in Pennsylvania and Stamford until moving to Portland 30 years ago. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 27, at Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Swedish cemeteryin Portland. John McMurdo October 24, 2003 John McMurdo of Severna Park, Md., a former resident of Stamford and Houston, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, at home. He was 62. He died of a brain tumor, according to his family. Born Feb. 27, 1941, in Johannesburg, South Africa, he was a son of the late Thelma and Tom McMurdo. Mr. McMurdo was a consultant to a pharmaceutical firm based in New York City. He also ran the Johannesburg Hospital for many years. He enjoyed golf and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Desiree L. McMurdo of Severna Park; a daughter, Nikki Forbes of Norwalk; a son, Glen McMurdo of Stamford; and a brother, Colin McMurdo of Johannesburg. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Hospice of Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.
