Christopher Barrows Sheldon
October 9, 2002
Main character in 'White Squall' based on Norwalk resident Christopher Barrows Sheldon, a longtime Norwalk resident and captain of the brigantine Albatross, whose tragic sinking was the subject of the 1996 film "White Squall," died Saturday, Oct. 5, at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford Hospital. He was 76. He died of pancreatic cancer, according to his family. Mr. Sheldon "had a lifelong interest in the sea, even when he was little," said his sister-in-law, Ginnie Brown of Baltimore. That interest led him to sign on as first mate and National Geographic magazine photographer on an around-the-world voyage aboard the Yankee. "He used to pour over the National Geographic," said his brother, John Sheldon of South Bristol, Maine. "He was very interested in travel, so he applied for a job." During a stop by the Yankee at Pitcairn Island -- the remote Pacific Ocean island where the mutinous HMS Bounty crew settled -- Mr. Sheldon located and recovered the Bounty's anchor. The discovery was later reported in National Geographic. Longtime friend Anne Ramsey of Stamford said the find was accidental. "He was just diving and just happened to come across it," she said with a laugh. In May 1959, Mr. Sheldon married Dr. Alice N. Strahan, the Yankee's medical officer and one of the first female graduates of Cornell Medical School. They founded the Ocean Academy, an at-sea school for high school students to learn and sail aboard the Albatross. The brig was sailing on calm water in the Gulf of Mexico when it was struck by a meteorological phenomenon called a microburst, or "white squall," in May 1960. The brief storm that sank the Albatross took the lives of Mr. Sheldon's wife, four students and the ship's cook. "It was like a bad dream," Sheldon said in an interview with The Advocate in 1996. "There were no heavy seas. The sea was almost calm -- and we were suddenly hit with this thing, thrown over on our side. It was like a huge hand just set the ship right down." "White Squall," directed by Ridley Scott and starring Jeff Bridges as Mr. Sheldon, took creative license with the sinking scene, Mr. Sheldon told The Advocate. The 90-second microburst, for example, was made into a 15-minute storm in the film. Still, he said, the filmmakers brought out "the horror of it." Born Oct. 12, 1926, in New York City, Mr. Sheldon was the son of the late Waldo and Priscilla Barrows Sheldon. He graduated from University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, and later earned a degree from the Princeton University Theological Seminary. He earned doctorate degrees in Spanish, philosophy and literature at University of Madrid in Spain. After the Albatross tragedy, Ramsey said, Sheldon was at loose ends. He was appointed the program's director of operations in Colombia on the recommendation of Mary Bunting, former president of Radcliffe College. "The Peace Corps was marvelous," Ramsey said. "It came at the just the right time." His programs continue, she said. In addition to his travels to Colombia, missionary work later took him to the base of the Grand Canyon to work with the Havasup community on the Colorado River in Arizona. He also was a board member for the Institute for General Semantics. "He had a number of changes in direction in his life," his brother said. In addition to his brother, Mr. Sheldon is survived by three nieces; a grandnephew; and two grandnieces. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Second Congregational Church, 139 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich. His body was donated to Yale University for research. Memorial donations may be made to the Mystic Seaport Museum, Christopher B. Sheldon Fund, 75 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic, CT 06355.
