Abigail Chavez Avila, a Stamford resident, died Saturday, Jan. 17, at Stamford Hospital. He was 32. Mr. Avila died from injuries he suffered jumping from the second story of a burning building on West Main Street in Stamford. Born April 10, 1971, in Guatemala, he was the son of Claira Rosa Avila of Guatemala and the late Jesuse Chavis. Mr. Avila was a farmer in Guatemala. He is survived by a brother, Rigneri Avila of Guatemala; and many cousins and friends. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 22, at Downer Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford. Burial will take place in Guatemala on Sunday, Jan. 25, Another service funeral service will be held in Guatemala on that day.

Bridget N. Granelli, a retired secretary and lifelong Stamford resident, died Thursday, Jan. 30, at The Smith House in Stamford. She was 84. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born March 25, 1918, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Alfonzo and Geraldine Della Corte Galasso. Mrs. Granelli was a retired employee of F.D. Rich in Stamford. She is survived by a son, Richard L. Granelli of Stamford; a daughter, Marilyn Healy of Fairfield; two sisters, Theresa Carroll of Stamford and Rose Kukuc of Fairfield; a brother, Anthony Galasso of Stamford; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Granelli; a granddaughter, Stacey Granelli Johnson; and a sister, Mary Galasso. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Leo P. Frank Joseph Babiarz

Frank Joseph Babiarz of Stamford died Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. He was 87. He died of prostate cancer, according to his family. Born Nov. 28, 1916, Dupont, Pa., he was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine Nowak Babiarz. During World War II, Mr. Babiarz was in the Infantry Officers Training School and served with the U.S. Army's Americal Division in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Leyte. A first lieutenant, he was awarded the Bronze Star as well as the Combat Infantryman's Badge and eight other ribbons and medals. He worked for Electrolux Corp. in Old Greenwich for more than 30 years and retired as a die-casting supervisor in 1981. He was an art model for Paul Calle, a nationally recognized artist. The artist's son, Christopher Calle, used Mr. Babiarz as the model for two U.S. postage stamps, including one honoring World War II veterans. He was a member of the Holy Name Athletic Club; POLAM, a Polish-American club; the AARP of Stamford; Saint Gabriel's Senior Center and the Springdale VFW. He is survived by his wife, Alice P. Babiarz of Stamford; a daughter, Josephine Babiarz of Arlington, Mass.; a sister, Frances Mazur of Linden, N.J.; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial will be private. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richard L. Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Bacon
Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Bacon of Stamford, a homemaker, died Friday, Oct. 3, at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. She was 81. She died of Alzheimer's disease, according to her family. Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Capt. William F. and Jane Hamilton Kennedy. Mrs. Bacon resided in Stamford in the early 1960s, moving to Boca Raton, Fla., in 1967. An active volunteer, she was involved in St. Joan of Arc parish ministries in Boca Raton. She returned to Stamford in 1996. She is survived by her sister, Louise Wright of Saratoga, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Capt. Noel R. Bacon USN (ret.); a daughter, Jane Bacon Bosak; and her infant son, William Bacon. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at St. Leo's Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford. A reception will follow at Woodway Country Club, 540 Hoyt St., Darien. Johnny R. "Dicky" Bagley of Bridgeport, a former longtime Stamford resident, died Thursday, Aug. 21, at Bridgeport Hospital. He was 65. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born May 13, 1938, in Martin County, Williamston, N.C., he was a son of the late Alice Bagley. Mr. Bagley was a window cleaner in Stamford. He lived in Stamford for most of his life, before moving to Bridgeport about 10 years ago. He was a 32nd degree junior warden of the Masonic Lodge No. 155 in Stamford. He also was an Eastern Star. He is survived by a son, Jonathan Banks of Bridgeport; three daughters, Susan Renee Bell Rasco of Greer, S.C., and Keeva Reese and Gisele Reese, both of Stamford; a brother, Rudolph Bagley of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Violene Bagley; a son, Larry Bagley; three brothers, Arlester Bagley, Brad Bagley and Charles Dixon; and three sisters, Josephine "Teen" Bagley Lawrence, Mary Warren and Susie Mae Long. A memorial service for Wayne A. Baker of Danbury has been set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at First Congregational Church chapel, Walton Place, Stamford. The Rev. Gary P. Brown will officiate. Mr. Baker, an electrical designer and former Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Danbury Hospital. He was 54. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born Oct. 11, 1948, in Brockton, Mass., he was a son of Eleanor French Baker of Southbury and the late John Milton Baker.

Ruth M. Balcerak of Greenwich died Thursday, Nov. 6, at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home in Greenwich. She was 86. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Jan. 11, 1917, in Greenwich, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Pauline Mendoc Davis. Before retiring, Mrs. Balcerak worked at Condé Nast Publications in Greenwich and Stamford Hospital. She was a former member of the 9th District Veterans Women's Auxiliary and a board member of the Greenwich Senior/Arts Center. She is survived by a son, Frank Balcerak of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Barbara Fulton of Norwalk; two sisters, Nell Hupal of Greenwich and Helen Stone of Las Vegas; two brothers, Raymond Davis of Greenwich and Benjamin Davis of Brookfield; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased her husband, Frank Balcerak; and a half-sister, Anna Nugent. There are no calling hours. A graveside funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at St. Mary's cemeteryin Greenwich. Francis Bernard Baldoz of Stamford, a fifth-grade student at Rogers Magnet Elementary School in Stamford, died Wednesday, March 12, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was 10. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born Aug. 11, 1992, in Stamford, he was the son of Carlos and Marcela Lardizabal Baldoz. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Ria Veronica Baldoz of Stamford; a maternal grandmother, Maria Lardizabal of Stamford; and his paternal grandparents, Vigeldio and Julie Baldoz of Bulacan, Philippines. Edward Howard Ballin of Stamford, a retired stock broker and financial adviser, died Sunday, Jan. 18, at home. He was 79. He died of blood diseases, according to his family. Born April 24, 1924, in New York City, he was the son of the late Charles and Pauline Gilman Ballin. Mr. Ballin attended Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., and SUNY College at Farmingdale, N.Y., where he studied horticulture. He went on to be president of Equity Paper Co. in New York City and later senior vice president of Stuart Coleman & Co. in New York City. He served as a medic and airplane technician for the U.S. Army during World War II. He had lived in Harrison, N.Y., for about 25 years before moving to Stamford in 1988. He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Ballin of Stamford and Caasi Waters of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, David Ballin of White Plains, N.Y.; two brothers, Stuart Ballin of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Richard Ballin of Boca Raton, Fla.; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Renee Sacks Ballin, in December 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at McMahon Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains. Renee J. Ballin of Stamford, a former editor and department store buyer, died Thursday, Dec. 19, at Stamford Hospital. She was 73. She died of heart failure, according to her family. Born Dec. 12, 1929, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Florence Oster Sacks. Mrs. Ballin was a resident of Stamford for more than 20 years. She was a graduate of Calhoun School in New York City and graduated from Columbia University in New York City where she received her bachelor's degree. She studied in Guatemala for two years, where she learned to speak fluent Spanish. She worked as an editor of Boys Outfitter and various other publications. She also worked as a buyer for Macy's in New York City. A former resident of Allenhurst, N.J., and Harrison, N.Y., she was a president of the Harrison Parent-Teacher Association and president of the Jewish Community Center Sisterhood. She was the first women to serve as a JCC board member in Harrison. She is survived by her husband, Edward Ballin of Stamford; a daughter, Sharon Rose Ballin of Stamford; a son, David A. Ballin of White Plains, N.Y.; a brother, Zachary Sacks of Bel Air, Calif.; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Sanford Sacks. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 20, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford. Burial will follow in Temple Israel cemeteryin Hasting-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Anna Balsam of Margate, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, at North Western Regional Hospital in Margate. She was 100. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Dec. 18, 1901 in New York City, she was a daughter of the late William and Sophie Cutler. Mrs. Balsam worked as a secretary for the Davar Importers in New York City. A lifelong resident of the Bronx, N.Y., and New York City, she and her husband moved to Florida in 1972. She and her husband, Harry Balsam, who is 101, would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in February. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dr. Mervyn Balsam of Stamford; a daughter, Phyllis Weiss of Nanuet, N.Y.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mildred M. Barbier of Port St. John, Fla., a former Stamford resident, died Saturday, Oct. 18, at home. She was 78. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born Sept. 13, 1925, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Beatrice Thompson. Mrs. Barbier lived in Stamford until moving to Port St. John in February. She was a retired office manager for various companies in Connecticut. She was an avid collector of unique pencils and butterflies. She is survived by a daughter, Mildred Carol Delvey of Port St. John; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Barbier; and two sons, Anthony Nigro and Christopher Nigro. There will be no calling hours. William J. Barney of Ocala, Fla., a former Stamford resident who was active in civic affairs, died Wednesday, July 23, at Summerfield Suites. He was 86. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born March 24, 1917, in New York City, he was a son of the late Johanna O'Sullivan and Bernard Barney. Mr. Barney was raised in Stamford and graduated from Stamford High School in 1936. After World War II, he joined the Nestle Co. in Stamford and remained there until he retired in 1982. He then moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., and relocated to Ocala in 1986. While retired, he was a math tutor for the Pinellas County and Marion County Public Schools in Florida. While living in Stamford, he was active in civic affairs, serving as a member of the Stamford Republican Town Committee. He was a candidate for the Board of Representatives, and managed the election campaigns of former Mayor Thomas Meyers. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Hircoe Barney of Ocala; a son, William Barney Jr. of Deep River; a daughter, Maureen Haas of New Milford; two sisters, Helen Brietweiser of Fort Meyers, Fla. and Rita Robertson of Port Charlotte, Fla.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Fitzgerald; a brother, Peter Barney, a sergeant in the Stamford Police Department; and two sisters, Joan Somerville and Bernadette Troy. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Aug. 30 at Christ Church in Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Hospice of Marion County, 3231 SW 34th Ave., Ocala, FL 34424-8489. Nicholas A. Basso, a lifelong New Canaan resident, died Thursday, June 12, at the Honey Hill Care Center Nursing Home in Norwalk. He was 84. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born May 30, 1919, in New Canaan, he was a son of the late Julius and Maria Calcone Basso. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Medal and Good Conduct Medal for service in the Philippines. He was retired and had worked as a carpenter for Louis E. Lee and Co. for many years. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church and the VFW No. 653 in New Canaan, a member of the Carpenter's Local No. 210, and a former member of the Stamford Pigeon Racing Club. In addition to his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Tomasetta Basso of New Canaan, he is survived by two sons, Thomas Basso of New Canaan and Christopher Basso of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary Santella of Norwalk; and several nieces and nephews. Alphonsina Bastura, a Stamford resident, died Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence at Stamford Hospital. She was 79. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born June 19, 1923, on Pacific Street in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Antoinette Giancarlo and Vincenzo "Jimmy Lena" De Guardia. Mrs. Bastura lived in Stamford for 30 years, before moving to Greenwich 49 years ago. She was a homemaker. She worked for the Department of War during World War II, helping with the development of radar in Baltimore. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6933 in Darien. She also belonged to the national chapter of AARP. She is survived by two sons, James Sparrow of Stamford and John D. Bastura of Brookfield; two stepdaughters, Maryann Simmel of Trumbull and Catherine Kaplan of Bridgeport; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband, John S. Bastura; a brother, Joseph De Guardia; and two sisters, Vita Vorvis and Mary Redin. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 279 Atlantic St., Stamford. Burial will follow in Putnam cemeteryin Greenwich. Lorve Bazelais of Stamford died Tuesday, Feb. 4, at home. She was 84. She died of heart failure, according to her family. Born June 17, 1918, in Haiti, she was a daughter of the late Murat Bazelais and Orena Elmaile. Ms. Bazelais was a member of St. Anne Church in Haiti. She lived in Stamford for six years. She is survived by a son, Wilner Bazelais of Stamford; three daughters, Marie Therese Joseph, Marie Anje Antoine and Jacque Joseph, all of Stamford; a sister, Ormila Bazelais of Boston; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Ashley M. Beach of Stamford died Friday, May 23, at Stamford Hospital. He was 70. He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family. Born March 24, 1933 in Bermuda, he was a son of the late Ashley E. and Mildred Alice Berniece Wade Beach. Mr. Beach worked in maintenance for Cheesebrough-Pond's in Greenwich for about 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Monica McLean Beach of Stamford; two sons, Ashley M. Beach Jr. of Stamford and Daniel Beach of Bermuda; four stepdaughters, Monica Eisenstien of Trumbull, Jennifer Tonge and Antoinette Henry, both of Stamford, and Patricia McGlorthan of Lexington Park, Md.; four brothers, Maxwell Beach, Raymond Beach, Frederick Beach, Millard Beach, all of Bermuda; four sisters, Diana Rayner, Jean Martin, Madree Jolliffe and Andrea Beach, all of Bermuda; and five step-grandchildren. Margaret C. Beasley of New Canaan, a homemaker, died Wednesday, April 16, at home. She was 92. She died of natural causes, according to her grandson, Michael S. Smith of Stamford. Born Sept. 13, 1910, in Rockdale, Ill., she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Donisch. Mrs. Beasley was a homemaker. She moved to New Canaan four years ago. In addition to her grandson, she is survived by her daughter, Alice O'Neill of New Canaan; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Glenn Beasley. Mrs. Becker was a retired secretary who worked for Royal Globe Insurance Co. in New York for many years. She was a benefactor and member of St. Benedict-Our Lady of Montserrat Church in Stamford. She is survived by a nephew, Vincent J. Veich of Bethpage, N.Y. She was predeceased by her husband, John Becker. Calling hours will be 4 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Bosak Funeral Home, 9 Pulaski St., Stamford.
