Alice B. Monroe, 92, of Willimantic, widow of Harold Monroe, Sr., died Thursday, 1/29/04, in her home. She was born May 1, 1911 in Lowell, MA, son of David and Derilba (Rondeau) Laferriere. Mrs. Monroe was a supervisor in the Housekeeping Dept. of the University of CT, retiring in 1975. She had been previously employed by the American Thread Co. for many years. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Anne Monroe, Jr. and a grandson, Kyle Chilleri. Her daughter, Francine Monroe predeceased her. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, 2/2/04, at 10 A.M. in St. Joseph Church in Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph cemeteryin Windham. James Kegler

James C. Kegler, 72, a lifelong resident of Willimantic, died Monday, 2/9/04, in Haven Health Center of Windham. He was born July 29, 1931 the son of the late James and Ellen (Murphy) Kegler. Mr. Kegler had a long career at Electric Boat in Groton. He was a graduate of Windham High School and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Eastern CT State College with a dual major in Accounting and Economics. James was a Korean War veteran in the Army as a Ham Operator in Germany. He served on the Windham Zoning Board, and was a member of the VFW Gold Star Post 1724 and the Irish Club. His survivors include three nephews: Joseph P. Kegler, Jr. of Fairfield, CT, Matthew D. Kegler of Deerfield Beach, FL, and Michael D. Kegler of New London. He also leaves several 2nd and 3rd cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph P. and David D. Kegler. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, 2/14/04, at 11 A.M. in the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in St. Joseph cemeteryin Windham. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Alberta D. (Legace) Belanger, 68, of Willimantic, beloved wife of Ronald L. Belanger, died Thursday, 2/26/04, at home. She was born March 15, 1935 in Willimantic, daughter of Albert and Yvonne (Decelles) Legace. Mrs. Belanger was a supervisor, employed by the Mansfield Training School for 20 years, retiring 8 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters: Cathy Belanger of Bristol, Susan Belanger, Debra Belanger and Lisa Belanger all of Willimantic. She also leaves a brother, Albert J. “Sonny” Legace of Willimantic and a grandson, Christopher Belanger. Her Graveside Service will be Monday, 3/1/04, at 10 A.M. in St. Joseph cemeteryin Windham. Emmanuella “Nellie” Ducharme, 92, of West Hartford, formerly of Willimantic, widow of Raymond A. Ducharme, died Sunday, 2/29/04, in her home. She was born Sept. 5, 1911 in Ensley, Alabama daughter of Vincenzo and Catherine (Marino) Alescia. Mrs. Ducharme had been employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft from 1942 to 1945. She and her husband owned and operated Ray’s Milk Bar Restaurant in Willimantic from 1947 to 1953. She was a member of the Italian-American Heritage Club in Willimantic. Her survivors include a son, George Gill Ducharme and his wife Joan of Granby, a daughter, Carol D. French and her husband, Gary of Bonsall, CA, a stepson, Michael Moran and his wife, Paula of Westerly, RI, a stepdaughter, Donna (Moran) Hollback of Willimantic, and a sister, Ann King and her husband, Tom of Willimantic. She also leaves three grandchildren: David French and his wife, Tracy, Scott French and Alescia Ducharme; five great grandchildren: Brittany, Kyle, Logan, and Jordan French and Allison Ducharme. Our slice of heaven went from our arms to God's on March 16,2004. Bailey Teresa Shifrin came into our lives on May 3, 1997 and changed us forever. Bailey spread God's word without ever speaking. Her unconditionallove, trust, laughter, and pure, beautiful smile taught all of us how to love one another. Bailey leaves her mother, Mary-Grace, her incredible, loving brother, Cooper, and her dad, Jim all waiting to join her again. She also leaves behind her grandmother, Flora Shifrin, and her grandparents, Ed and Dolores Quick, loving aunts and uncles, and her cousins Nick, Joe, and Sean Shifrin, Bryan Quick, and Samantha and Tyler Howe. A longtime resident of East Haven, He was born in Keene, NH on Sept. 10, 1926 the son of Hugo and Josephine Wurm, Jr. Mr. Wurm was a former employee of Yale-New Haven Hospital. He leaves two sisters, Marie Shanley and Marta Holman and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Anne Prout and a longtime friend, Gladys Denis. Roger L. Valliere, 91, of Windham, formerly of Mansfield, husband of the late Aline (Gagnon) Valliere, died Wednesday, 04/07/2004, in St. Joseph Living Center in Windham. Mr. Valliere was a chef in the St. Mary-St. Joseph School Cafeteria for 22 years, retiring several years ago. He, previously, was a baker with the Beauchamps and Mandel Bakeries. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Willimantic. His survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law: Normand and Eva Valliere of Columbia, Richard and Margaret Valliere of No. Windham, and Paul and Mary Valliere of Asheville, NC. He also leaves eight grandchildren: Denise Peay, Mark Valliere, Brenda Anderson, David Valliere, Kenneth Valliere, Steven Valliere, Cynthia Porach and Eric Valliere. Other survivors include ten great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Anna Valliere of Willimantic and several nieces and nephews. She was born Sep. 17, 1937 in Wauregan the daughter of Alfred and Dora (Bessette) Aubin. Mrs. Valliere was employed by Walbaum Super Market for 25 years, retiring in 1999. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Willimantic. Margaret was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed life and playing with her grandchildren. Besides her husband, her survivors include a daughter, Brenda Anderson and her companion, Mark Danforth of Tolland; two sons: David Valliere of Mansfield and Kenneth Valliere and his wife, Julie of Willimantic. She was born Feb. 16, 1923 in Korolyczy, the Ukraine the daughter of Yakiw and Maria (Myszczenko) Burlaczuk. Mrs. Szpika had been employed by the University of CT for several years, retiring in 1988. She was previously employed by the Electro-Motive Co. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughter, Irene Petsa of Windham; two Grandchildren, Sonya Ware of Windham and Zenko Petsa of Columbia. She also leaves four great grandchildren: Devyn Petsa, Tatyana Ware, Tyler Ware and Alexis Petsa. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Anatole Petsa. She was born Dec. 31, 1932 in Middletown, CT the daughter of Alfred and Delia (Barr) LaVoie, Sr. She was a secretary for the Windham Eye Group for over 20 years, retiring in 1997. Previously, Mrs. Mellady was a secretary at St. Mary’s-St. Joseph School for many years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Guild and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters: Roberta Bellows of Southwick, MA, Dianne Anderson and her husband, Jeffery of Scotland, and Nancy Eastman and her husband, Robert of Enfield. She also leaves a brother, Alfred Lavoie, Jr. of Canterbury, a sister, Gloria Limanni of Willimantic, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Previously, she worked for the Electro-Motive Co. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Willimantic. Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Cary Fausey of Mansfield Center and two grandchildren, Joy Fausey of Glastonbury and Donald Fausey of Boston, MA. She was predeceased by three sisters: Armande Gormley, Violet King and Rita Christian Varhue and a brother, Albert Lariviere. Camilla F. Tranka, 89, of Storrs, widow of Charles A. Tranka, died Wednesday, 4/28/04, in Windham Hospital. She was born June 23, 1914 in Willimantic the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Hudycka) Nowak. She worked in Food Service at the Mansfield Training School for 19 years, retiring in 1973. Previously, she was employed by the American Thread Co. for many years. Mrs. Tranka was an avid Gardener, loved to crochet and watch UCONN Women’s Basketball, and was a great cook. Her survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ausburger and Carol Smith and her husband, Donald of Storrs; a brother, Joseph Nowak and his wife, Elsie of Chaplin; two sisters, Elizabeth Adamcik and Toefilia Kennison of Willimantic. She also leaves four grandchildren: Charles Ausburger, Caroline Enes and her husband, John, Sandra Kipp and Christopher Smith all of Storrs; also six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Tranka, a sister, Jennie Urban and a brother, John Connor. She was born Feb. 13, 1923 in Manchester, NH the daughter of Amedee and Marie (Bissonnette) Therrien. Mrs. Messier was devoted to her family and loved knitting. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Willimantic. Her survivors include a son, Donald Messier and his wife, Kathy of Willimantic; two daughters: Joan Charron and her husband, Richard of Storrs and Diane Dole of North Windham; two sisters: Yvette Gouin of Danielson and Lucille Corentin of Manchester, CT. She also leaves five grandchildren: Doreen Rivera, Donna Bragg, Earl Messier, Mandy Landry and Jessie Shea, and she has seven great grandchildren. Elise Theresa Nowak, Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and all around good person. Passed to her heavenly reward in the early hours of May 13, 2004. She was born on March 13, 1921 in Three Rivers, Canada to the late Henry & Bertha Desilets . She moved to Willimantic, Ct. at an early age. Where she was educated, worked and found the love of her life. She was married to Joseph P. Nowak in July of 1946. They moved to Scotalnd road in Chaplin where she was blessed with three daughters and a son. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her husband Joseph, her daughter Nancy, her husband Bill Bradley and their son, Willie; her daughter, Joyce, her husband Rick Shea and their sons Kris and Keith and great granddaughter, Abby; and her daughter, Karen and her husband Tim Shea and their menagerie of many animals. She has been reunited with her son, Joseph Jr., who passed after living only a few weeks. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews including Janet Elise Theriault. She was a passionate lover of her family, an avid reader and a full of fun. She is now in His loving care. Emily (Becker) Kelly, 91, of Storrs, widow of Norman C. Kelly, passed away Thursday, 5/20/04, in Windham Hospital. She was born April 28, 1913 in Glastonbury, the Daughter of Charles and Emma (Welk) Becker. She worked at the Mansfield Training School for many years, retiring in 1973. Mrs. Kelly loved rug braiding and fishing. Her survivors include a daughter, Marie Rudenauer of North Windham, a son, Norman Kelly of Storrs, and a sister, Christine McPherson of Middletown. She also leaves 10 grandchildren, several great grandchildren,3 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a gathering to celebrate Emily’s life on Monday, 5/24/04, from 11 to 12 Noon at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic, followed by a procession to the Storrs cemeteryfor her burial.

Damon, 63, of North Stonington, CT, Beloved husband of Joan (Talbot) Damon, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, 5/20/04, after a year-long battle with Cancer of the Brain. He was born April 27, 1941 in Deer Isle, ME the son of Cecil and Maxine (Barbour) Damon. He had been employed by the Electric Boat of Groton for 35 years, retiring as a General Foreman and Pipefitter. He was an avid woodworker, loved farming and helping his family and friends. Sherwood and Joan would have celebrated their 21st anniversary on May 21st. Besides his wife, his survivors include his stepmother, Oleeta Damon of Stonington, ME, a sister, Marilyn Davis and her husband, Roger of Deer Isle, ME, a brother, Roderick Damon and his wife, Brenda of Chesapeake Beach, MD, two stepdaughters: Gail Stalinski and her husband, John and Karen Bridenstine and her husband, Lenny, all of Griswold, CT. He also leaves his special granddaughter, Courtney Bridenstine and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Byron Damon. George L. Adams, 88, of Willimantic, died Saturday, 5/22/04, in Windham Hospital, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Jean (Asselin) Adams, who passed away last December. He was born Dec. 4, 1915 in Manchester, NH the son of Donat and Lucia (Fecteau) Adams. He was in Quality Assurance at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station for over 30 years. Mr. Adams was a Navy veteran of World War 2. He was a member of the K of C San Jose Council 14, the VFW Gold Star Post 1724, the senior band, “The Quiet Bunch”, several senior organizations, and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Willimantic. His survivors include two sons: Robert L. Adams and his wife, Catherine of Assonet, MA, and Daniel J. Adams of Willimantic; a brother, Leo Adams of Willimantic and a sister, Lorraine Duchesneau of Mansfield. He also leaves three grandchildren: Scott Adams, Todd Adams and Joy Adams; two great grandchildren: Kendra and Bailey Adams, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter Hanyckyj, 87, of Columbia, beloved husband of Anna (Humyuk) Hanyckyj, died Sunday, 6/6/04, at home. Born in Hrebeniew, the Ukraine, He and Anna immigrated to the United States and have lived in the Windham area since 1949. They celebrated their 59th anniversary on June 3 of this year. “How thankful he was to live in freedom.” He had been employed by the Mansfield Training School for 10 years, until his retirement. He previously worked at the American Thread Co. for 20 years. Mr. Hanyckyj was a founder and charter member of St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian National Home. Besides his wife, his survivors include a son, Marty and his wife, Ceci, a daughter, Gloria Hochanadel and her husband, Steve; Three grandchildren: Elijah and his wife, Beth, Aubrie, and Adam Hochanadel. He also leaves two great grandchildren, Sarabeth and Isabella and his caregiver, Nella Ozga. He was predeceased by his son, Myron. She was born Dec.23,1915 in Willimantic the daughter of Augustus and Josephine (Maskery) Giraca. She had been employed by S.N.E.T for 25 years, retiring 25 years ago. Mrs. Vesco was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Willimantic. Her survivors include two daughters: Geraldine Puglia and her husband, Laurence and Sally Miller, all of Willimantic; three grandchildren: Tammy Rosario, Cheryl Beebe, and Jeffrey Miller. She also leaves eight great grandchildren: Leticia, Quinton, Larissa, Andrew and Jaden Rosario, Joshua Miller, Jordan Beebe, and Arisina Miller. She was predeceased by her son, Michael and son-in-law, Edward Miller, Jr. Her Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, 6/16/04, at 11 A.M. in the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph cemeteryin Windham. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:00 A.M.

John W. Harold, 47, of Willimantic, died Sunday (July 18, 2004) in St. Joseph Living Center after a brief illness. He was born July 23, 1956 in Willimantic the son of William and Josephine (LaVecchia) Harold of Willimantic. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Patrick, daughter, Lauren and brother, Michael. He also leaves behind his former wife, Janis Anthony and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. John was a graduate of Windham High School and the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. He had been employed as a pharmacist for several area pharmacies and as a consulting pharmacist at Aetna, CIGNA and the Travelers. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 7/21/2004, at 11 A.M. in St. Joseph’s Church in Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph cemeteryin Windham. The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic. Family Requests In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
