William Edward Dorin, 89, of 1022 Worthington Ridge, Berlin, husband of Betty-Lou (Troup) Dorin for 59 years, died Monday afternoon (October 28, 2002) at New Britain General Hospital after a valiant battle with a massive stroke that he suffered early in September. Born in Meriden, the son of the late Peter and the late Anna Dorin, he graduated from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1940, where he met Betty-Lou, and was an electrical mechanical engineer at Pratt and Whitney Division of United Technologies in East Hartford for thirty-nine years where he worked on jet propulsion when it was in it’s early stages, and he traveled world-wide as a trouble-shooter for the company. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church, and, until his illness, had not missed Mass any more than once a year in his entire lifetime, was a faithful member of the Kiwanis Club, and enjoyed selling Christmas trees on their lot, helping with the Fishing Derby for handicapped children, and the distribution of small trees to school children in the Spring, and a dedicated member of the Republican Party. He and his wife were recently presented a brass plaque by the Republican Town Committee in appreciation of over a century of combined dedicated service to the Party and the Town of Berlin. Truly a “handy man” who could fix anything, he was a fine cabinet maker, and turned out beautiful furniture that he copied from antiques. He completely renovated his large colonial house in the Historic District, and was awarded a plaque from the Berlin Historic District Commission, “In recognition of the care, craftsmanship, respect for period detail, and aesthetics demonstrated in preservation of the home at 1022 Worthington Ridge”. This was particularly gratifying to him because he had served as chairman of The Commission. Bill and Betty-Lou volunteered at New Britain General Hospital for the past eleven years, and he counts the staff and workers there among his many friends. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark Dorin of Alexandria, Virginia, twin grandsons, Erik and Christopher Dorin, both working in Boston, a third grandson, Andrew Dorin, studying in Barcelona, Spain, two sisters, Mrs. John McNulty of Newington, and Mrs. Henry Dean of Naugatuck, a brother, Father Robert Dorin, S.J., his loyal dog, Denny, and numerous nieces and nephews. A devoted family man, very enthusiastic about his son and grandsons’ accomplishments, he was a kind, generous, and helpful man whose death revives wonderful memories among family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday (Novenber 2, 2002) at 10am at St. Paul’s Church on Alling Street in Kensington. Burial will follow in Maple Cemetery, Berlin, after which there will be a reception at Berlin Congregational Church on Worthington Ridge. Friends and relatives are invited to call at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway, Kensington, on Friday (November 1, 2002) from 5-8pm. In lieu of flowers, those who wish can make donations in his memory to New Britain General Hospital, 100 Grand Street, New Britain 06050.
