John Jerome Gerdis
BERLIN – John Jerome Gerdis, 89, of 95 Oak Ridge Drive, widower of Helen Evelyn (Jankowski) Gerdis, died Monday morning (November 11, 2002). Born in New Britain, the son of the late John Joseph and the late Margaret (Savage) Gerdis, he attended New Britain schools, served in the U.S. Army in WWII in Germany, was employed at Berlin Steel Construction, and then enjoyed his retirement as a captain for New England Steamboat Line on the Connecticut River. He was a member of Berlin V.F.W. Post #10732. He is survived by a brother, Thomas Gerdis of Berlin, nephews and nieces, Tom and Judy Gerdis, John and Sharon Gerdis, Don and Robin Forcash, Theresa and Richard Jankowski, Jacqueline Hodgson, Peter and Linda Dyer, and Fletcher and Marie Johnston, and great-nephews and great-nieces, Trina and Ken Sutherland, Joel and Toby Gerdis, Micah Gerdis, Kim Gerdis, and Steven, Alan, and David Forcash. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Johnston and Bernadette Dyer, and a nephew, Tim Gerdis. A funeral service will be held Saturday (November 16, 2002) at 10am at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway in Kensington, The Rev. Thomas A. Gerdis Jr. officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in his memory to V.F.W. Post #10732, P.O. Box 7025, Kensington 06037.

John C. Granatowski
NEW BRITAIN – John C. Granatowski, of New Britain, loving husband of Evelyn (Wysoski) Granatowski for fifty-eight years, died Saturday (August 31, 2002) at Bay State Medical Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts. Born December 13, 1914 in Jerome Pennsylvania, the son of the late Steve and the late Mary (Pochek) Granatowski, he attended schools in Poland before returning to the United States in 1939, served in the US Army in WWII, and was employed at Emhart Corporation until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, and took great pride in his gardens and his yard. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, John Grant and his wife Lillian of Wolcott, Robert Granatowski of New Britain, Gerald Granatowski of Cheshire, and Alan Granatowski and his fiancee Catherine Barnhart of Manchester, a daughter, Doris Granatowski-Schilt and her husband Louis Schilt of Old Brookfield, New York, eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday (September 5, 2002) at 9am from Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway in Kensington, followed by a funeral liturgy at 10am at St. Joseph Church.. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain, Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday (September 4, 2002) from 5-8pm. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the Restoration Fund of St. Joseph Church, 195 South Main Street, New Britain 06051-1403.

Carol M. (Reynolds) Hall
SOUTHINGTON – Carol M. (Reynolds) Hall, 64, of Andrews Street, the loving wife of J. David Hall, died Friday morning (January 24, 2003) at Hartford Hospital. Born in New Britain, the daughter of the late Theodore and the late Louise (Blanchard) Reynolds, she graduated from Berlin High School, was employed at Meriden-Wallingford Society for the Handicapped, and also operated her catering business “Catering With Class”. She was a member of Kensington Congregational Church, and the Women’s Auxiliary of the South Kensington Fire Department. She loved making ceramics, cooking, and fondly caring for animals. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Aaron D. Hall of Bristol, two daughters, Wendy L. Hall of Plainville, and Laurie A. Lanteri of Bristol, a brother, Edwin Reynolds of Tucson, Arizona, three grandchildren, Jennifer Damaceno, and Bryan and Matthew Bruce, and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday (January 28, 2003) at 11am at Kensington Congregational Church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives are invited to call at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway, Kensington, on Monday (January 27, 2003) from 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her memory to The Memorial Fund of Kensington Congregational Church, 312 Percival Avenue, Kensington 06037.

John Noxon Howard
NEW BRITAIN – John Noxon Howard, 87, of 60 Hickory Hill Road, husband of Cherry (Wilcoxen) Howard, died Tuesday (July 30, 2002) at New Britain General Hospital. Born in Hartford, the son of the late Harry Herbert and Ruth (Garrette) Howard, he completed his Bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth College, and received his Law degree from the University of Virginia, served in the US Navy in WWII, and was a retired senior partner at the law firm of Camp, Williams, & Richardson. He was a member of First Church of Christ, Congregational, the Shuttle Meadow Country Club, past president and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Medal of the New Britain-Berlin Rotary Club, a director of Wheeler Clinic, a director of the New Britain Boys’ and Girls’ Club, trustee of The New Britain Museum of American Art, director of the former New Britain Bank and Trust Company, and a director of Goss & deLeeuw Machine Company. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Noxon Howard Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of South Windsor, two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Robert Schaecher of Braschaat, Belgium, and Kathryn and James Kerrigan of Prague, Czech Republic, two sisters, Audrey Shipps of Newington, and Lois Nichols of Broad Cove Shores, Maine, four grandchildren, John and Stuart Howard, and Dennis and Eric Schaecher, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Tuesday (August 6, 2002) at 11am at First Church of Christ, Congregational, 830 Corbin Avenue, New Britain. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to The Boys‘ and Girls Club of New Britain, The New Britain Foundation of Public Giving, The New Britain Museum of American Art, or First Church, Congregational.

Mary Mae (Sencio) Kerelejza
NEW BRITAIN – Mary Mae (Sencio) Kerelejza, 92, of 975 Corbin Avenue, widow of Peter Kerelejza died Tuesday evening (May 20, 2003) at a local convalescent home. Born in New Britain, the daughter of the late John and the late Eva (Karbonic) Sencio, she attended local schools, and was employed by the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation until her retirement in 1979. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church where she belonged to the Sisterhood and the Cultural Organization. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Sandra Colli and her husband Ramon of Wethersfield, Gary Sencio and his wife Beth of Holliston, Massachusetts, and Josephine Burger of Berlin. A funeral service will be held Friday morning (May 23, 2003) at 10am at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, New Britain. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the church on Friday (May 23, 2003) from 9am until the time of the service. Thomas Paul Manchesi
KENSINGTON - Thomas Paul Manchesi, 75, a life long resident of New Britain until moving to Hickory Hill Road in Kensington six months ago, the loving husband of Florence (Langdon) Manchesi, died Thursday (August 15, 2002) at New Britain General Hospital. Born in New Britain, the son of the late Servio and the late Anna (La Rosa) Manchesi, he attended local schools, proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII on a PT boat, and was an assembler for many years at Pratt and Whitney. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Kensington, the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Worker’s Union, and the Marconi Club of New Britain. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Catherine Manchesi of Kensington, Thomas and Cynthia Manchesi of Valrico, Florida, and Perry and Marie Manchesi of Riverview, Florida, three daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Patrick Calafiore of Bristol, Susan and Louis Frati of Coventry, and Cynthia Manchesi and Robert Kulesza of Berlin, three sisters Mary Miano of Bristol, Angie Battaglia of Kensington, and Stella Covini of Berlin , and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Monday (August 19, 2002) at 9am at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Hwy. in Kensington, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 10am at St. Paul’s Church on Alling Street. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery in New Britain. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home, on Sunday (August 18, 2002) from 6-8pm. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Memorial Fund of St. Paul Church, 479 Alling Street, Kensington 06037.

Joseph Edward Manzi
KENSINGTON – Joseph Edward Manzi, 23, of 192 Harvest Hill Road, son of Anthony Nicholas and Beverly (LaChance) Manzi, died early Saturday morning (December 21, 2002) in a snowmobile accident in New York. Born in New Britain, he graduated from Berlin High School in 1998, was employed by the Town of Berlin, and most recently for Nadeau Brothers Construction, and Ciamella Construction. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church, the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department where he was Financial Secretary Elect and a member of the Board of Directors, recently received his Medical Response Technician’s License, and was an accomplished drummer who loved music. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandfather, George LaChance of Plainville, a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Christine Manzi of Berlin, an aunt and uncle, Howard and Pamela LaChance, and a cousin Bryan LaChance, all of Plainville. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Anthony and Marie Manzi, and his maternal grandmother, Claire LaChance. Funeral services will be held Friday (December 27, 2002) at 9am from Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Hwy. in Kensington, with a Funeral Liturgy at 10am at St. Paul Church on Alling Street. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday (December 26, 2002) from 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, 1657 Wilbur Cross Highway, Berlin 06037.
