James R. Greig, 78, was a Gaylordsville resident
James Richard Greig, 78, of 76 South Kent Road, Gaylordsville, died Oct. 23 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Doris (Dee) (Bell) Greig.
Mr. Greig was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Bronx, N.Y., son of the late James and Jean (Jamieson) Greig.
He moved to Hartsdale, N.Y., as a child and was educated locally. He attended Pace Business School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Southland and took part in the Normandy invasion.
He moved to Gaylordsville in 1986 after retiring from the American Express Company as office manager of the voice and wire communications department.
Mr. Greig was a member of the Saint Paul’s Methodist Church, the Saint Andrew’s Society of Connecticut, and the Clan Gregor Society of Scotland.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Jamieson of Armonk, N.Y.; two daughters, Alisyn Hamilton of Gaylordsville and Lindsay Ward of Sherman; and four grandchildren, Daniel and Ashley Hamilton of Gaylordsville and Kyle and Blaire Ward of Sherman. He was predeceased by a brother, Gordon.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Shrack, 80, mother of area residents
Mary Jane Shrack, 80, of Butter Brook Hill Apartments, New Milford, died Oct. 24 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of Clarence H. Shrack Jr.
Mrs. Shrack was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Huntington Beach, Calif., daughter of the late Arthur and Nadine (Brown) McCoy.
In 1948, she moved to New Milford, where she and her husband owned and operated Shrack’s Outlet on Railroad Street until his death in 1974.
She is survived by a son, Clarence and his wife Jennifer of Kent; two daughters, Linda DeFazio and her husband Frank of New Milford and Patricia Bates and her husband Charles of New Milford; two granddaughters, Barbara Bates and Denise DeFazio of New Milford; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Anderson, 89, active in Washington Grange
Evelyn Esther (Carlson) Anderson, 89, of 52 Missionary Road, Cromwell, previously a longtime resident of Chestnutland Road, New Milford, died Oct. 25 at her home. She was the wife of Paul C. Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson was born Nov. 12, 1912, in Washington, the daughter of the late Walfred C. and Lillie Helga Maria (Karlson) Carlson.
She worked for the post office in Washington, and from 1948 until her retirement, for the Ericson Agency in Washington.
Mrs. Anderson was a lifelong member of the Salem Covenant Church and sang in its choir and was a member of its Lydia Circle.
She was an active member of the Washington Grange and volunteered for many causes, particularly the American Red Cross.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Anderson is survived by two nieces, Joan Ericson of Anthony, N.M., and Susan Ericson of Washington.
A memorial service will be held today (Friday) at 1 p.m. at the Salem Covenant Church, Baldwin Hill, Washington.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford is in charge of arrangements.

Susanna Scott, 96, mother of New Milford woman
Susanna (Tullock) Scott, 96, formerly of Monroe, died Oct. 22 at the Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of Leonard Scott.
Mrs. Scott was born Oct. 22, 1906, in New Hartford, daughter of the late Michael and Anna Tullock.
She lived most of her life in the Stratford-Monroe area. She was a member of the Monroe American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Theodore and Charles of Florida; a daughter, Lois Benham of New Milford; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sons, Richard, Robert and Leonard.
The Redgate-Hennessey Funeral Home of Trumbull was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Helen Kinsella, 91, mother of New Milford man
Helen (Dowd) Kinsella, 91, of Kennedy Court, New Milford, died Oct. 27 at Harborside/Glen Hill Health Center, Danbury. She was the widow of Dr. John J. Kinsella.
Mrs. Kinsella was born Nov. 7, 1910, in Lattintown, N.Y., a daughter of the late Michael and Katherine (McManus) Dowd.
She was a longtime resident of Mountainside, N.J., where she was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and an active member of the Rosary Society. She moved to New Milford in 1995.
She is survived by two sons, John and his wife Jan of New Milford and attorney William Kinsella and his wife Kathleen of Huntington, N.Y.; a sister, Catherine Dowd of Marlboro, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Leanne Bayer of Avon and Gregory of Herndon, Va. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Schmidt.
In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to the Dr. John J. Kinsella Memorial Scholarship Fund of Kean College, Union, N.J.
The Honan Funeral Home of Newtown was in charge of arrangements.

Norma Munro, 98, longtime Sherman resident
Norma S. Munro, 98, of Sherman died Oct. 15 at her home after a brief illness. She was the widow of Joseph A. Munro.
Mrs. Munro was born Sept. 16, 1904, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Alvin C. and Adele (Knuth) Schmitt.
She and her husband moved to Sherman in the mid-1970s after having lived in New York City. She was an artist.
She is survived by a sister, Florence Hicks of East Lansing, Mich.; three nephews, K. Richard Hicks of Grosse Point Farms, Mich., William Tyrrell of Stuart, Fla., and John Tyrrell of Crofton, Md.; and numerous grandnieces.
There will be a memorial service at Christ Church on Quaker Hill in Pawling, N.Y., Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
The Horn and Thomes, Inc., Funeral Home, 63 East Main St., Pawling, N.Y. is in charge of arrangements.

Gene R. Hovey, was father of New Milford man
Gene R. Hovey, formerly of Wilmington, Mass., and Brookfield, died Oct. 17 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Moriarty).
He had recently returned to the northeast from Florida.
Mr. Hovey was born and raised in Wilmington, attended Wilmington schools, played high school sports and was an avid golfer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He graduated from Babson College and American Institute of Foreign Trade after which he enjoyed a successful international career in which he lived and worked on five continents.
He lived the past three years in Florida, where he was active in Knights of Columbus, Men’s Club of St. Scholastica Church, the Hibernian Society and American Irish Club of Lecanto, Fla.
He was active in St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish in Brookfield.
Mr. Hovey is survived by a daughter, Beryl Russell and her husband Thomas of Naugatuck; three sons, W. Gregg and his wife Donna of New Milford, Peter and his wife Ivonne of Danbury, and Edward and his wife Shirley; four grandchildren, Leslie of Danbury, Brendan of New Milford, Jessica Russell of Naugatuck and Emma Hovey; a sister, Eldora True and her husband William of Sanford, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite’s Church in Brookfield. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Dorothy’s Church in Wilmington.

Terrance Rowley, 72, brother of New Milford woman
Terrance M. “Terry” Rowley, 72, of Heritage Village, Southbury, formerly of Brookfield, died at his home Oct. 19 following a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary Lou (McKenney) Rowley.
Mr. Rowley was born Oct. 6, 1930, in Danbury, son of the late William and Minnie (Brundage) Rowley.
He grew up in Danbury and was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a retired quality engineer, having retired from the Perkin-Elmer Company in 1995 after 38 years.
He was a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was also an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman and loved his Irish heritage.
Besides his wife, Mr. Rowley is survived by three sons, Terrance and his wife Kristy of Naugatuck, Timothy and his wife Erica of Charleston, S.C., and Brendan and his wife Beth of Beacon Falls; a daughter, Katie Falkowski and her husband Rob of North Haven; a sister, Jeanette Hawthorne of New Milford; 10 grandchildren, Danny, Connor, Kelsey and Jennie Rowley, Liam and Brooks Rowley, Molly and Margaret Falkowski and Brendan and Andrew Rowley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, William and a sister, Kathryn Schrade. His sister, Mary Lauf, died two days prior to his death.

Mary Lauf, 89, was sister of New Milford woman
Mary R. Lauf, 89, of Stamford died Oct. 17 at Stamford Hospital. She was the wife of Andrew Lauf.
Mrs. Lauf was born June 17, 1913, in Danbury, the daughter of the late William and Minnie (Brundage) Rowley.
She was employed at General Electric Credit for over 20 years.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Andrea Moon of Comack, N.Y., and Melinda Thies of Barrington, R.I.; a sister, Jeanette Hawthorne of New Milford; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn Schrade. In addition, her brother, Terrance Rowley of Southbury, died Oct. 19, two days after her death.
The Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home of Stamford was in charge of arrangements.

Harry Holmes, 81, was stepfather of Kent man
Harry V. Holmes, 81, of Carter Road, Kent, died Oct. 16 in Kent. He was the husband of Jeanette (Curtiss) Holmes.
Mr. Holmes was born April 8, 1921, in Moss, Norway, son of the late Gustav and Jenny (Hansen) Holmes.
He attended schools in Roselyn, N.Y., and became a cabinetmaker and antique dealer. He had lived in Cornwall Bridge and owned Harry Holmes Antiques.
Besides his wife, Mr. Holmes is survived by a son, Michael; a stepson, Dennis Curtiss of Kent; a brother, Gunnar of Sheffield, Mass.; a sister, Elsie Stevens of Umatilla, Fla.; and several grandchildren.
The Kenny Funeral Home of Sharon was in charge of arrangements.

Ebba Anderson, 91, former New Milford resident
Ebba Sophia (Lugn) Anderson, 91, of Falls Church, Va., formerly of New Milford, died Oct. 13 in Virginia. She was the widow of Herman Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson was born Aug. 3, 1911, in Diamond Hill, Cumberland, R.I., daughter of the late John A. and Anna Sophia (Johnson) Lugn.
She moved to New Milford in 1976. She was a lifelong member of the Arnold Mills Methodist Church, R.I., and a member of the Arnold Mills Grange and National Grange. She had also been a member of the Swedish Vasa Lodge in Providence, R.I.
She is survived by a son, Donald and his wife Carole of Pawleys Island, S.C., formerly of New Milford; three grandchildren, Bradford of Chicago, Ill., Deborah of San Diego, Calif., and Rebecca Weissman of Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren, Joseph and Lowell Weissman of Falls Church; a nephew; two nieces; and three cousins.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
