Quirino Cortina, 75, had owned Cortina Gardens
Quirino Cortina, 75, of 164 Shipley Road, Freehold, N.Y., formerly of New Milford, died Aug. 22 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y. He was the widower of Mary (Aminti) Cortina.
Mr. Cortina was born Nov. 19, 1927, in Ripi, Italy, son of the late Pasquale and Palma (Lancia) Cortina. He came to the United States in 1951 and moved to New Milford in 1963. He and his wife established Cortina Gardens on Route 67 in New Milford.
He retired in 1993, at which time his daughter took over the ownership and operation of the business. Prior to the nursery business, he was a stone mason. He enjoyed gardening and wine-making.
Mr. Cortina is survived by two daughters, Margherita Leviness of Warren and Lisa Cortina of Katonah, N.Y.; four brothers, Raffaele, Ruggero, Emilio and Lino; a sister, Palmina Malandrucculo; five grandchildren, Conor, Kieran and Declan Hannigan, and William and Christopher Leviness; a great-grandchild, Christopher Leviness Jr.; and his best friend, Isolde Anderson of Freehold.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Rowena Hill, 82, mother of New Milford woman
Rowena Adaline Hill, 82, of 175-A Heritage Village, Southbury, died Aug. 25 at Connecticut Hospice Center in Branford. She was the wife of Roy W. Hill Sr.
Mrs. Hill was born July 23, 1921, in Dinuba, Calif., daughter of the late Clarence N. and Ida Mae (Hiatt) Ross.
She lived in San Jose, Calif., and Norwalk until she moved to Heritage Village in 1985. She was a 50-year member of the San Jose Chapter 31 of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of Marie Lafayette Chapter 111 O.E.S. in Fairfield, a member and past treasurer of the Connecticut State Weavers Guild, and a member of Alpha Omicron Phi sorority.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Hill is survived by a son, Roy Jr. and his wife Bobbi of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; a daughter, Rebecca Tanner and her husband John of New Milford; a sister, Kathryn Cloke of Cupertino, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Jillian Tanner.
The Carpino Funeral Home of Southbury was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel M. Wright, had relatives in Bridgewater
Mabel M. Wright died Aug. 25 at her home in Bethel. She was the widow of Bernard T. Wright Sr.
Mrs. Wright was born 1918 in Bridgeton, N.J., to Furman and Lidie Mulford.
She moved to Bethel in 1947 and was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church. She was also a member of The Order of Eastern Star.
She was secretary of Wright Tree Service from 1974 right up until a few days before her death.
Mrs. Wright is survived by three children, Carol Lee Norman of Bethel and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard T. Wright Jr. and Edward Wright of Bridgewater; three grandchildren, Rebecca Eck, Jennifer Cleveland and Sarah Andrade; two great-grandchildren, Victor Tomanio and Hanna Eck; and several nieces and nephews.
The Bethel Funeral was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel Methodist Church, 141 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, CT 06801.

Alexander Stewart, 66, was New Milford resident
Alexander Rae Frazer Stewart, 66, of New Milford died Aug. 25 at his home.
Mr. Stewart was born Aug. 24, 1937, in Dundee, Scotland, son of the late David C. and Mary Ann (Gellatly) Stewart.
He moved to the United States in the 1960s and settled in Stamford. He moved to New Milford in 2000 to live with his brother and his family. He was a volunteer at the First Congregational Church of New Milford.
Mr. Stewart is survived by a brother, Ronald. He was predeceased by a son, Sandy.
The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Wanzyk, 84, was relative of area residents
Helen Wanzyk, 84, a longtime resident of Danbury, died Aug. 21 in Danbury. She was the widow of Paul J. Wanzyk.
Mrs. Wanzyk was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Newtown, a daughter of the late Frank and Julia (Felisko) Piskura.
She was raised and educated in Newtown and had been a resident of Danbury since the late 1940s.
Mrs. Wanzyk is survived by a son, Paul Jr. of Washington; two daughters, Eileen of New Milford and Barbara of Danbury; two brothers, Martin Piskura of New Milford and Andrew Piskura of Roxbury; and two sisters, Mary Piskura of Southbury and Jenny Piskura of Bethel.
The Honan Funeral Home of Newtown handled arrangements.

Myrtle B. DeLong, 88, sister of New Preston woman
Myrtle B. (Mead) DeLong, 88, formerly of Kenosia Trail, Danbury, died Oct. 7 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford.
Mrs. Delong was born April 17, 1915, in Danbury, a daughter of the late Edward J. and Anna (McGill) Mead.
She made her home in the community most of her life. She worked as an assembler for Kirk-Matz Silver Company for 20 years.
Mrs. DeLong is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Barata of New Preston and Anna Baur of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Mead, and a sister, Evelyn Perfido.
The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Menconi, 97, grandmother of New Milfordites
Helen Menconi, 97, of Corona, Queens, N.Y., and Lady Lake, Fla., died Oct. 14. She was the widow of Bruno Menconi.
Mrs. Menconi was born Nov. 21, 1905, in Naples, Italy, daughter of the late Ulysses and Caroline DeFelice.
She is survived by a son, William of Lady Lake; two daughters, Jeannie Gimenez and Sylvia of Lady Lake; 14 grandchildren, including Robert and Peter Gimenez and William of New Milford; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Laura Mangiolomini.
The wake will be held at the Edward Guida Funeral Home, 47-20 104th St., Corona, today (Friday) from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be at St. Leo’s Church in Corona tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:45 a.m.

Catherine Tompkins, 93, longtime Washingtonian
Catherine A. Tompkins, 93, of Washington died Oct. 12 at The Kent. She was the widow of Dudley Tompkins.
Mrs. Tompkins was born Aug. 5, 1910, in New York City, daughter of the late Herman and Catherine Kaiser.
She was a longtime resident of Washington and worked as a housecleaner while raising her family. She was a member of the Washington Grange. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and her family and friends.
Mrs. Tompkins is survived by five sons, Oscar, Warren, Harold and Franklin of Washington, and Richard of Morris; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Harold.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Milton Cemetery, Blue Swamp Road, Litchfield.

Mary Alice Wilms, 74, mother of New Milford man
Mary Alice Wilms, 74, of Brewster, N.Y. died Oct. 11.
Mrs. Wilms was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Bronx, N.Y., daughter of Richard and Anna (Ryan) Blackmore.
She had lived in the Bronx before moving to Brewster, where she had lived for most of her life. She was a member of the Putnam Lake Senior Citizens and a parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church.
Mrs. Wilms is survived by two sons, Christopher of San Francisco, Calif., and David and his wife Judy of New Milford; two daughters, Ann Howell and her husband Joseph of Patterson, N.Y., and Kathy of Brewster; a sister, Joan Farrell of Tom’s River, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
The Beecher Funeral Home of Brewster was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Heart Association, Putnam Division, 95 Gleneida Ave., Carmel, NY 10512.

George Easterbrook Sr., 76, was former resident
George David Easterbrook Sr., 76, of Summer Street, Torrington, formerly of New Milford, died Oct. 9 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Litchfield. He was the husband of Eleanor (Hoffman) Easterbrook.
Mr. Easterbrook was born Oct. 13, 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Irwin G. and Catherine (Fitzgibbon) Easterbrook.
He had worked as a butcher since the age of 14 and retired from the former First National Supermarket, New Milford, in 1988. He was a member of the Colonial Hills Baptist Church, Danbury, where he sang in the choir for many years.
Besides his wife, Mr. Easterbrook is survived by two sons, George Jr. of Bantam and Glenn of Lakeville; a sister, Audrey McGowan of Leeds, Ala.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

George Chappuis, 79, former Warren selectman
George F. Chappuis, 79, of 24 Kent Road, Warren, died Oct. 10 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Harriet (Dinneen) Chappuis.
Mr. Chappuis was born May 27, 1924, in Washington, son of the late Maxwell and Jennie (Monroe) Chappuis.
He retired as a salesman from United Oil Products in Bantam in 1986, having traveled the world, including trips to Egypt, India, Japan and Ethopia.
He was a former chairman of the Regional 6 Board of Education, former president of the Warren Volunteer Fire Department, former third selectman of the town of Warren, and former member of the Democratic Town Committee of Warren.
Besides his wife, Mr. Chappuis is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Dada of Warren; a sister, Linda Stickles of New Hampshire; and a grandson, Jake Dada of Warren.
A graveside service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at the New Warren Cemetery.

Elizabeth Hampsey, 84, was New Milford resident
Elizabeth "Bess” Hampsey, 84, of Butter Brook Hill Apartments, New Milford, died Oct. 10 at New Milford Hospital. She was the widow of George Michael Hampsey.
Mrs. Hampsey was born May 16, 1919, in Scranton, Pa., daughter of the late Isaac Ira and Sarah (Coleman) Gingher.
She was a secretary with Nestle’s Corporation, New Milford, retiring after 17 years of service. She was a member of the New Milford Historical Society and a volunteer at the New Milford Thrift Mart. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, bridge and traveling.
Mrs. Hampsey is survived by a son, George of Greenville, Tenn.; a daughter, Susan Daigle of Bridgewater; a sister, Eleanor Farrell and her husband Thomas of Florida; five grandchildren, Karen Bissell of Vermont, Kevin Hampsey of Vermont, Stacey Wynn of Utah, Megan Daigle of New York and Marnie Knight of Tennessee; and 11 great-grandchildren.
