Edith Doutney, 86, mother of New Milford woman
Edith G. (Edwards) Doutney, 86, of Mountainville Avenue, Danbury, died Jan. 2 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Warren F. Doutney.
Mrs. Doutney was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 16, 1913, a daughter of Leonard and Jessie (Horton) Edwards.
She was employed as a nurse's aide for the Brookside Rest Home. She retired after numerous years of service.
Mrs. Doutney is survived by four daughters, Joye Ferris, Patricia Kuhne and Sharon Bongiorno of Danbury and Carolyn Granja of New Milford; two sisters, Jessie Patton of Danbury and Laura Estrada of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The Green Funeral Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Rosemary Lariccia, 73, mother of New Milford man
Rosemary (Scozzafava) Lariccia, 73, of Clearbrook Road, Danbury, died Jan. 4 at her home. She was the wife of John B. Lariccia.
Mrs. Lariccia was born in Danbury, Oct. 8, 1926, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Rotunda) Scozzafava. She attended St. Joseph's School and Danbury High School and was a lifelong Danbury resident.
She had been employed as the cafeteria manager at Shelter Rock School for 12 years and at Davis & Geck for 18 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Peter Church and its Parish Life Committee, was a volunteer at St. Peter Church and active in parish activities. She also volunteered as a receptionist at the Danbury Probate Court.
Mr. and Mrs. Lariccia celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last November.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, John A. Lariccia and his wife Janis of Newtown, James P. Lariccia and his wife Deborah of New Milford; a daughter, Mary Ellen Cesca and her husband Paul of Danbury; two brothers, Thomas Scozzafava Sr. of Danbury and Louis Scozzafava of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Michelle Lariccia, Gina Lariccia, Jennifer Cesca, Tamma Rosensteel, David Lattin and Matthew Cesca; two great-grandchildren, Anneka and Helaina Rosensteel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, today (Friday) at 9:45 a.m. to St. Peter Church at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial.
Interment will be in the family plot in St. Peter Cemetery.

Margaret Brague, 56, was active in Warren
Margaret "Maggie" (Davis) Brague, 56, of Woodville Road, Warren, died Jan. 3 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of William C. Brague III.
Mrs. Brague was born Feb. 8, 1943, in Greenwich, daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Cosgrove) Davis.
She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Greenwich and was a resident of Warren for many years. She was a charter member of Warren Women's Auxiliary, former member of Warren PTO, and had served as secretary of Warren Lions Club.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, William C. IV and Ryan Brague of Warren; a daughter, Colleen Stentiford of Greenville, Me.; and three grandchildren.
The Rowe Funeral Home of Litchfield was in charge of arrangements. Contributions in her memory may be made to Warren Ambulance, Warren, CT 06754.

Jane Chiaramonte, 51, was a Sherman resident
Jane M. Chiaramonte of Sherman died Jan. 3 after a long illness.
She was born Feb. 5, 1948, in New York City, daughter of Jane (Coady) Moffat and the late Mark L. Moffat.
Mrs. Chiaramonte graduated from The Assisium Academy in Manhattan. She worked for The New Yorker Magazine and after moving to Sherman worked for the Perkin-Elmer Corporation until her children were born.
She was an active volunteer at the Sherman School for many years and in 1995 was honored as the recipient of the first Volunteer of the Year Award. She was an active member of the Holy Trinity Church in Sherman.
Besides her mother, Mrs. Chiaramonte is survived by her husband of 30 years, Joseph; a son, Michael; a daughter, Alison; a sister, Christine Travelpiece and her husband, Wayne, of Poughquag, N.Y.; a brother, Robert Moffat and his wife, MaryJude, of Dover Plains, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Matthew.
The New Fairfield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Holy Trinity Youth Group of Sherman, Holy Trinity Church, Sherman, CT 06784.

Margaret Strelez, 79, was lifelong area resident
Margaret Barbara Strelez, 79, of 19 Prospect Place, New Milford, died Jan. 2 at New Milford Hospital.
She was born in Bridgewater Aug. 14, 1921, a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Kurtz) Strelez.
She was employed for many years at the Nestle Company, retiring in 1986. She was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church, New Milford.
Ms. Strelez is survived by a brother, Joseph J. Strelez of Litchfield; a sister, Anna S. Lynch of New Milford; and several nieces and nephews.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Caroline Murphy, 72, was New Milford native
Caroline Helen Murphy, 72, of 4 Howe Road, New Milford, died Jan. 2 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of William J. Murphy Jr.
Mrs. Murphy was born in New Milford Aug. 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Joseph and Caroline (Campbell) Yoblonski. She was a graduate of New Milford High School, was an avid bingo player and was well-known for her love of crafts and sewing.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by five daughters, Christine Farrell, Patricia Malumphy and Maureen Block of New Milford, Colleen Murphy of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Kathleen Murphy of Danbury; three sisters, Margaret Polzun, Josephine Bryer and Dorothy Doyle of New Milford; two brothers, Walter Yoblonski of Sherman and John Yoblonski of New Milford; seven grandchildren, Lynda Arnold, Brenda Farrell, Mikaela and Julia Malumphy, John Gereg V, Michael and Keleigh Block; two great-grandchildren, Cyrissa Mazurak and Amber Farrell; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, William J. Murphy III.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

George McKay Sr., 72, former local policeman
George Edward McKay Sr., 72, of 88 Sunny Valley Road, New Milford, died Jan. 1 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marie West.
Mr. McKay was born in New York City Feb. 22, 1927, a son of the late Harold and Josephine (Feuz) McKay.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United State Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
He was a member of the New Milford Police Department from 1972 until his retirement in 1989. He was also a lifetime member of the Andrew B. Mygatt Post 1672 VFW of New Milford.
He is survived by four sons, George E. McKay Jr., Joseph A. McKay and Steven M. McKay, all of New Milford, and Frederick J. McKay of Derby; two daughters, Janet Carlson of Tucson, Ariz., and Nancy A. McKay of New Milford; a brother, Harold McKay of Morganville, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mabel Smith, 94, former Booth Free principal
Mabel A. Bernhardt Smith, 94, of South Street, Roxbury, widow of Sanford Smith, died Jan. 1 at New Milford Hospital.
Mrs. Smith was born May 25, 1905, in Roxbury, daughter of the late Rully M. Bernhardt and Rachel (Minor) Bernhardt. She was a teacher at Center School, Booth Free School, and later was principal at Booth Free. Her teaching career spanned 42 years, teaching several generations of Roxbury residents.
She was educated in Roxbury and graduated from the Danbury State Normal School. She received her teaching certificate from Danbury Teacher's College. She also was a reporter for a local newspaper.
Mrs. Smith was a lifelong member and the oldest member of the Shepaug Club. She was also a member of the Roxbury Congregational Church.
She enjoyed extensive travel across the United States and most recently attended the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall.
Mrs. Smith will be remembered for her knowledge, gentle spirit and philanthropy, which included the gifts of land for the Minor Memorial Library and the soon-to-be built Roxbury Senior Housing.
The Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere in Woodbury was in charge of arrangements.

Kay Shanley, 79, mother of New Milford women
Kathleen (Kay) Shanley, 79, of North Port, Fla., died Dec. 24.
She was born April 21, 1921, in New York City.
Her family said she has become their special Christmas Angel because she had made the Christmas season a magical time of the year for her seven children.
Mrs. Shanley came to North Port from Brookfield, where she she is remembered for always making room for one more at her already full table.
Survivors include her husband, John Shanley of North Port; six daughters, Maureen Shanley and Patricia Zelle of Brookfield, Mary Gates and Eileen Trnka of New Milford, Kathleen Koch of San Jose, Calif., and Elizabeth Miller of Twain Harte, Calif.; and nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Koch, Shannon Miller, Kevin Trnka, Christopher Miller, Brendan Zelle, Kayla Trnka, Jonathan Trnka, Brittany Trnka and Bridget Zelle. She was predeceased by her son, John P. Shanley Jr.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys in Brookfield Jan. 14 at 8 a.m. A "Celebration of Life" and a Mass will take place April 21 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys in Brookfield. Interment will take place at that time.
Memorial donations may be made to San Pedro Building Fund, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port, FL 34287.

Laurence Schmidheini, 76, owned local lawn service
Laurence Frederick Schmidheini, 76, of 8 High View Road, New Milford, died Dec. 27 at The Kent. He was the widower of Eva (Martin) Schmidheini.
Mr. Schmidheini was born July 24, 1924, in Fairfield, son of the late Frederick P. and Gennevia (Busser) Schmidheini.
He moved to New Milford from Bridgeport in 1960 and was a life member of the Northville Volunteer Fire Department.
He owned and operated L&M Lawn and Garden Service for a number of years.
Mr. Schmidheini is survived by three sons, William of Cheshire, Luis of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and James of Torrington; a daughter, Mary S. Vincent of New Milford; a brother, Carl of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at Mountain Church of God, 159 Pocono Road, Brookfield. Burial will be at the family’s convenience.

Margaret Sommerville, 64, was New Milford resident
Margaret O’Meara Sommerville, 64, of 57C Butter Brook Hill Apartments, New Milford, widow of Ireland J. Sommerville, died Dec. 30 at Candlewood Valley Health Center.
Mrs. Sommerville was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Dec. 24, 1936, a daughter of the late George and Margaret Bowen O’Meara.
She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church of New Milford.
She is survived by two sons, Robert F. Neu, Jr. of Dover Plains, N.Y., and Richard Neu of Ephrata, Pa; two stepsons, David Sommerville of Waterbury and Richard Sommerville of Florida; three daughters, Karen A. Baywood of Bethel, Janet Rajcok of New Milford and Joanne Neu of Danbury; two brothers, George O’Meara of Holiday, Fla., and Herbert Hasse of New Milford; four sisters, Claire Gaykowski of Maplewood, N.J., Kathleen McEniry of Yonkers, N.Y., Frances Mulgrew of Brewster, N.Y., and Maryann Thomas of Yonkers; and 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Sommerville was predeceased by a brother, Joseph O’Meara.
The Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford handled arrangements.
