Rosalie M. Baxter, 68, was Sherman teacher, volunteer
Rosalie M. Baxter, 68, of 168 Route 39 North, Sherman, died Nov. 25 after a long illness. She was the wife of Brooke D. Baxter.
Mrs. Baxter was raised in the Northville section of New Milford, the daughter of Paul and Yazah Douskey.
She attended the one-room schoolhouse in Northville, New Milford High School at East Street and the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where she graduated with honors and distinctions in 1954.
She taught in Newtown for three years and left for a 13-year hiatus devoted to raising her four children. In 1970, she returned to teach at the Sherman School as a reading specialist for the next 22 years.
Mrs. Baxter received her master’s degree at Western Connecticut State College (now Western Connecticut State University) and her sixth year diploma at Southern Connecticut State University.
She served as director of the Regional Reading Center, was a member of the Reading/Language Arts Council for RESCUE and a member of the Orton Dyslexia Society. She was a member of the New England Association of Schools and College Visiting Team and the steering committee for The Sherman School Self-Study Accreditation Process.
In 1987, Mrs. Baxter was honored as Sherman’s Teacher of the Year. In 1994, she traveled to her grandparents’ homeland of Poland and volunteered to teach English in the Polish school system.
In 1996, the Rosalie Baxter Award, a merit award, was created in perpetuity. This honor was a moving tribute that she cherished dearly.
She was active with The Sherman Players, served on the Sherman Sentinel board and was treasurer of the Sherman Higher Education Fund Board. She had an avid interest in the Garden Club and Sherman Historical Society. She served as organist and treasurer of the Polish National Catholic and Apostolic Church in New Milford for many years.
Mrs. Baxter will be remembered as being a thoughtful, devoted, committed and brave woman throughout her life’s journey.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a brother, Paul Douskey and his wife, Allison Scott; two daughters, Cynthia and her husband, Raymond MacDonald, and Laura and her husband, Bruce Alexander; two sons, Brooke and his wife, Claudia Hunsberg-Baxter, and Mark and his wife, Gail Baxter; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sherman Congregational Church, 6 Church Road, Sherman.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford is in charge of arrangements.

Lars A. Wallin, 61, father of New Milford man
Lars A. Wallin, 61, of Fox Den Road, Danbury, died at his home Nov. 27. He was the husband of Adele Surovy Wallin.
Mr. Wallin was born in New York City Nov. 18, 1939, son of the late Gunnar and Wilma (Forslin) Wallin.
He came to Danbury at the age of 5 and graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School and Danbury High School, Class of 1957. He served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960.
He was a self-employed commercial real estate broker, a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and The Shuffle and Shoot Club, and a past member of the church’s Couples Club and the Danbury Lions Club.
Mr. Wallin was active in his children’s sports activities and helped coach Immanuel Lutheran School and P.A.L. basketball teams.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Lars Jr. and his wife Darlene of New Milford, Les and his wife Hayley of Danbury, and Lance and his wife Lindsay of Danbury; three grandchildren, Lars III, Kylie and Nicole; his father and mother-in-law, Samuel and Dorothea Surovy; his cousins, Carol Boyce, Richard Weniger and Britt Bottigilay; and several nieces and nephews.
The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Carp, 58, was father of Roxbury man
Thomas Gene Carp, 58, of Dorman Road, Oxford, died Nov. 20 at Griffin Hospital in Derby after a long illness. He was the husband of Agnes Marks Cicarelli Carp.
Mr. Carp was born Dec. 5, 1941, in Bridgeport, son of the late William and Angie (DeFinis) Carp. He was a 25-year resident of Oxford, having previously lived in Danbury. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Carp was the owner of Thomas Carp Insurance Agency. He was worked as a computer tutor for the town.
He was a past president of the Oxford Businessmen’s Association and a member and past officer of the Life Underwriters Training Council.
Besides his wife, Mr. Carp is survived by two sons, Robert Cicarelli of Sandy Hook and Michael Cicarelli of Roxbury; four daughters, Nancy Marie Hallee of Waterbury, Lucille Spoldi and Chrisann Cicarelli, both of West Haven, and Kathy Wilson of North Branford; a sister, Janice Straw of Prospect; and nine grandchildren.
Burial was in Mountain Meadows Cemetery, Seymour.
The Miller-Ward Funeral Home in Seymour was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Cheney, 67, lifelong New Preston resident
Charles Maxwell Cheney, 67, of 2 Schwab Road, New Preston, died Nov. 22 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth “Betty Ann” (Cook) Cheney.
Mr. Cheney was born Feb. 3, 1933, in New Preston, a son of the late Kenneth K. and Edith (Smalley) Cheney.
He was a lifelong New Preston resident, better known to many as Mick. He was a soft-spoken man, but when he talked people listened.
Mr. Cheney served in the Army in the Korean War with the 2nd Division 38th Infantry Regiment. He received a Korean Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Republic of Korea, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Mr. Cheney retired from Northeast Utilities after 35 years as lead mechanic. He also ran a snow-plowing business for many years.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 420. He was a lifelong member of the New Preston Congregational Church, the American Legion Gage Zumpf Post No. 87 and the VFW Post No. 1672 in New Milford.
In his free time he enjoyed hunting, playing cards, listening to country music, watching a good Western, cooking, and searching for arrowheads. He loved spending time with his friends and his faithful cat “Garfield.”
He had a deep love for his extended family and took pride in all that they achieved. He was known in the community as someone you could always count on for a helping hand.
Mr. Cheney is survived by two sons, Charles of Warren and Sean of Windsor; a daughter, Margaret of New Preston; a grandson, Charles, who is currently serving the Army in Kosovo; five brothers, Theodore, Roy, Thomas, Frederick and Louis; and three sisters, Caroline Green, Ester Leblanc and Genevive Bushman. He was predeceased by brothers Kenneth and George Cheney and a sister, Nancy Calhoun.

Paul Lipari Sr., 86, father of former New Milfordite
Paul T. Lipari Sr., 86, of Palmer Township, formerly of Easton, Pa., died Nov. 21 at Easton Hospital. He was the husband of Grace M. (Geraci) Lipari.
Mr. Lipari was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Easton, a son of the late Rosario and Santa (Noto) Lipari.
He was a member of Padua Catholic Church in Easton.
Mr. Lipari was a staff sergeant in the 90th Division, 3rd Army under General Patton. He entered Europe at Normandy. He owned and operated Lipari’s Bakery and Deli in Easton for 50 years.
Besides his wife, Mr. Lipari is survived by three daughters, Rosemarie Roy of 111 Devoken Drive, Unit 509, Middletown, CT 06457, formerly of New Milford, Barbara Harris of Newbury Park, Calif., and Santa M. Wright of Bethlehem Township, Pa.; two sons, Russell of Wilson Borough, Pa., and Paul of Nashua, N.H.; four sisters, Angelina of Easton, Anna Ricci of Easton, Grace Fortino of Phillipsburg, N.J., and Nancy Werner of Easton; two brothers, Santo of Philadelphia and Joseph of Easton; and 15 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John, and a brother, Russell.
Calling hours will be today (Friday) from 7 to 9 p.m at the Curran-Finegan Funeral Home in Wilson Borough.
The funeral will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home and at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m.

George A. Manizza, 75, was a New Milford resident
George A. Manizza, 75, of New Milford, died Nov. 23 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Helen (Gottardi) Manizza.
Mr. Manizza was born in Italy Jan. 28, 1925, a son of the late John and Maria (Serafini) Manizza. He came to the United States in 1928.
He served in the United States Army in World War II, participating in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was with the 9th division at Utah Beach in Normandy and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars.
Mr. Manizza had lived in Katonah, N.Y., from 1967 until this year, when he moved to New Milford.
He had been employed by the New York Department of Sanitation from 1952 to 1972, after which he was a bus driver for the Katonah-Lewisboro School District from 1972 to 1976. He later worked at the maintenance department at Readers’ Digest.
Mr. Manizza had many hobbies, including building rock walls, gardening, gourmet cooking, painting and photography.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jane Ohayon of Newtown and Kathy Leier of New Milford; a sister, Diane Fuco of Rome, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Robert H. Abrolat, 67, was a Roxbury resident
Robert H. Abrolat, 67, of 3 Hemlock Road, Roxbury, died Nov. 22 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.
Mr. Abrolat was born June 19, 1933, in Stratford, son of the late Hans and Margaret (Bayer) Abrolat.
He attended schools in Fairfield and was a Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was a self-employed carpenter and had lived in Roxbury since 1982.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford handled arrangements.

Pauline Case, 83, was a lifelong Kent resident
Pauline (Chase) Case, 83, of Kent died Nov. 25 at The Kent. She was the widow of Williston B. Case.
Mrs. Case was born Dec. 10, 1916, in the Macedonia section of Kent, the daughter of the late Alva and Grace (Stone) Chase.
She graduated in 1930 as valedictorian of her class at the Kent High School. As an active member of the community, she was president of the Kent Nursing Association and an officer of the Kent Cemetery Association.
Mrs. Case was involved with the Historical Society and was an enumerator for the Region 1 school system. She was recently honored as a 70-year member of the First Congregational Church of Kent.
Mrs. Case is survived by two sons, Williston Jr. and his wife, Patricia, and Gilbert, all of Kent; a daughter, Isabel C. Guidice and her husband, Paul, of La Mesa, Calif.; two sisters, Edna Frisbie of Kent and Grace Funk of New Canaan; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Daphne.

The foundation is part of the Society of Women’s Engineering at San Diego State University and is in memory of Pauline’s granddaughter, Daphne Marschalk Fredrickson, who died in September.

Elizabeth Baker, 92, taught music in the area
Elizabeth (Sanford) Baker, 92, of Southbury died Nov. 25 at Mediplex in Danbury.
Mrs. Baker was born Oct. 27, 1908, in Bridgewater, daughter of the late David C. and Daisy (Hill) Sanford.
She was a longtime resident of Bridgewater before moving to Heritage Village in 1970.
She attended Arlington Hall School in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, Va., where she majored in piano and pipe organ. She furthered her music education at Danbury State Teachers College and received a degree in music education from Hartt College in Hartford.
She taught music in the Bridgewater, Brookfield, Roxbury, Morris and New Fairfield school systems. She also gave private lessons in piano and pipe organ and served as organist and choir director at Danbury Baptist Church, First Methodist Church in Danbury and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where she was a lifetime member.
She is survived by several cousins.
