George Brown, 74, was brother of Kent woman
George F. Brown, 74, of Sharon Goshen Turnpike, Cornwall, died Jan. 10 at Sharon Health Care. He was the widower of Marie F. Boyd.
Mr. Brown was born Aug. 1, 1926, in New Milford, son of the late Flora Brown.
He worked for the Department of Environmental Protection as a regional state forester.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the European theater. He also participated in Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and earned the Silver Star.
Mr. Brown was a charter member of the Cornwall VFW, as well as many boards and committees for the town of Cornwall.
He is survived by three sons, David of New York, John of Canaan and Thomas of Cornwall; a brother, John of Colorado; three sisters, Betty Bertine of Kent, Martha Weik of Morris and Alice Szczesniak of Harwinton; and four grandchildren.
Burial will be in the spring. The Kenny Funeral Home of Sharon is in charge of arrangements. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department, Cornwall Bridge, CT 06754.

Dr. Henry Fleischman, 81, father of Sherman man
Dr. Henry Fleischman, 81, formerly of Candlewood Isle, New Fairfield, and Tarrytown, N.Y., died Jan. 10 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y. He was the husband of Marie (Chmelar) Fleischman. Dr. Fleischman was born in New York City, the son of the late Henry and Susan (Stiffel) Fleischman.
He was a graduate of Temple University Medical School. He was in private practice in Tarrytown, specializing in internal medicine, and was on medical staff at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Tarrytown.
Besides his wife, Dr. Fleischman is survived by a daughter, Barbara Derby of Cropseyville, N.Y.; two sons, Roy of Cropseyville and James of Sherman; and two grandchildren, Megan and Bret Derby. Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family tomorrow (Saturday) at the Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, 312 Hoosick Street, Troy, NY 12180.
There are no calling hours.

Ogden Linabury, 74, was a New Milford resident
Ogden K. Linabury, 74, of Aspetuck Village, New Milford, formerly of Danbury and Bethel, died Jan. 14 at Danbury Hospital.
Mr. Linabury was born in Bronxville, N.Y., son of the late Wilbur and Madge (Fountain) Linabury. He moved to Danbury at age 12 and attended Danbury schools. He later attended the former Danbury Teachers College (now Western Connecticut State University), Syracuse University and the University of Miami.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was a recipient of the American Area Medal and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Linabury had been employed as a surveyor for the Paparazzo Development Co. of Southbury, Jack Green in Danbury, the B.J. Dolan Co. of Bethel and as an estimator for O&G Construction. He was an avid sports fan and sports historian. During the 1980s he often appeared with Jerry Davis on Comcast Cablevision to answer sports-related questions and to convey his knowledge on sports history.
He is survived by two sons, David and his wife Karen of Lunenburg, Mass., and Mark and his fiancée Phyllis Leone of Bristol; a stepson, Jim Fernandez of Brookfield; a daughter, Monica of San Francisco; two stepdaughters, Dian Fernandez of Queens, N.Y., and Gale Fernandez of New Milford; two step-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jaclyn Fernandez; and his former wives, Patricia Linabury and Carroll (Blanning) Fernandez. He was predeceased by a son, Peter G. Linabury. The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Towne, 84, mother of Kent woman
Margaret McGlynn Towne, 84, of the Ballard Green, Ridgefield, formerly of Woodbury, died Jan. 10 at Laurelwood Rehabilitation Center, Ridgefield.
Mrs. Towne was born in Ridgefield June 12, 1916, a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret (McCauley) McGlynn.
She attended local schools. She was a retired secretary and was last employed by Paparazzo Management Company of Southbury.
Mrs. Towne is survived by a son, Gary of Goshen; three daughters, Judy Van Horne of North Carolina, Wendy Harvey of Sheffield, Mass., and Marguerite Towne of Kent; a brother, retired Ridgefield Fire Chief Richard T. McGlynn of Ridgefield; a sister, Ethel Stegner of Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Peter Towne, who died in Vietnam.
Graveside interment services will take place in West Cemetery, Litchfield, in the spring. There will be no calling hours. The Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home of Danbury handled arrangements. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Foster St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Philip Sheridan Jr., 69, lived in Gaylordsville
Philip James Sheridan Jr., 69, of Gaylordsville died Jan. 15 at the New Milford Nursing Home. He was the husband of Christine (Brundage) Sheridan.
Mr. Sheridan was born in Norwalk Sept. 15, 1931, the son of the late Philip Sheridan Sr. and the late Muriel (Millard) Drumm. He had lived in Norwalk for most of his life.
He was a retired firefighter with the Norwalk Fire Department and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Sheridan was a 1949 graduate of Norwalk High School, a member of the Eagles, Aerie 588 and the American Legion Post 12.
He is survived by a son, Philip III of Southbury; a daughter, Lynn Peet of Gaylordsville; a sister, Janet Soyak of Ridgefield; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepmother, Dorothy (Bossa) Sheridan and his stepsister, Helen Ungvary. The Magner Funeral Home of Norwalk was in charge of arrangements.

Maria Nunes, 100, mother of Gaylordsville woman
Maria Nunes, 100, wife of the late Jose Nunes, died Jan. 15 at the New Milford Nursing Home. She was born in Portugal Feb. 4, 1900, daughter of the late Jose and Maria (Pina) Concalves. She came to the United States as a young woman and had lived in Danbury for more than 50 years. For the past several years, she had resided with her daughters in Danbury and in Gaylordsville. Mrs. Nunes is survived by two daughters, Benvinda Gomes of Danbury and Emily Francis of Gaylordsville; three grandsons, Albert Gomes of Newtown, Jack Francis of Danbury and Vic Francis of Gaylordsville; a brother, Antonio Concalves of Portugal; six great-grandchildren; and three great, great-grandchildren.
The Green Funeral Home in Danbury was in charge of the arrangements.

Karime S. Hadad, 92, was a New Milford resident
Karime (Showah) Hadad, 92, of 119 Housatonic Ave., New Milford, formerly of Danbury, died Jan. 11 at the New Milford Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Michael A. Hadad.
Mrs. Hadad was born in Soudie, Syria, Aug. 28, 1908, a daughter of the late George and Katherine (Showah) Showah.
She immigrated to this country in 1928 from Syria and had been a resident ever since.
She was a founding member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church of Danbury as well as a member of its Ladies Society.
Mrs. Hadad is survived by a daughter, Marion Horton and her husband, Robert of New Milford, with whom she made her home; five sons, Albert of Danbury, George and his wife Patricia of Newtown, Nicholas and his wife Vera of Woodbury, John and his wife Joanne of New Fairfield, and Louis and his wife, Loralee of Brookfield; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Patrick Summers, 51, was brother of local women
Patrick J. Summers, 51, of 1112 Main St., East Hartford, died Jan. 21 at Hartford Hospital.
Mr. Summers was born Dec. 20, 1949, in Yonkers, N.Y., a son of the late George A. and Mary (Finn) Summers.
He was a graduate of Danbury High School and attended Waterbury Hospital Technical School and Norwalk Community College.
Mr. Summers was a United States Army Vietnam veteran, serving two tours of duty. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Mr. Summers had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service in the Stamford Post Office, retiring after numerous years of service.
He is survived by two sisters, Jacalyn Hodgman of Washington and Dorothy Gregory of New Milford; a niece, Cindy Hodgman of Tampa, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The Green Funeral Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.
Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

Carlyle Horne Jr., 71, longtime New Milfordite
Carlyle M. Horne Jr., 71, of New Milford died Jan. 16 at his home. He was the widower of Pearl (Flint) Horne.
Mr. Horne was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Portland, Maine, son of the late Carlyle M. and Emily E. (Rogers) Horne Sr.
He attended Koby Classical in Maine and had served in the Coast Guard before serving for two years in the Marine Corps, being honorably discharged in the late 1940s.
He was the owner of Carl’s Barber Shop in Gray, Maine. After moving to New Milford, he worked for the state of Connecticut at Southbury Training School as a barber for more than 10 years, retiring at age 55.
Mr. Horne was a resident of New Milford for more than 30 years and enjoyed hunting, square dancing and ballroom dancing.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Wynkoop and Tina Marie Rose, both of East Providence, R.I.; two stepdaughters, Linda Wallace of Maine and Dianne Stitzer of Indiana; three stepsisters; a grandson; three step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth, Maine, in the spring.

Grace Lewis, 88, mother of New Milford woman
Grace (Sherwood) Lewis, 88, died Jan. 18 at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of Edson Harold Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Philmont, N.Y., Aug. 25, 1912, to Frederick C. and Minnie (Maxwell) Sherwood.
She was a 1930 graduate of New Canaan High School and a longtime resident of Brookfield Center. She was a partner in Lewis Paint Works for many years and was an active member of the Newbury Congregational Church in Brookfield.
Family members and friends say Mrs. Lewis will be fondly remembered for her voracious appetite for reading and New York Times crossword puzzles, as well as her love of sewing, embroidery and knitting.
She is survived by two daughters, Lane McManus and her husband John of New Milford and Diane of Glastonbury; four grandchildren, Emily Marshall Majer of Tivoli, N.Y., Carrie Maxwell and Oliver Majer of Glastonbury and Jane McManus D’Angelo of Boston; a brother, Clarence Sherwood and his wife Mary Jane of Hazelton, Pa.; and her compassionate friend, Maria Peacock.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 36 Main St., New Milford.

Martin McGowan, 79, husband of New Milfordite
Martin F. McGowan, 79, of Palm City, Fla., died Jan. 19 at the Martin Memorial Medical Center, Stuart, Fla. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Orr) McGowan of Palm City, Rye, N.Y., and New Milford.
Mr. McGowan was a native of Bronx, N.Y., and had been a resident of Palm City for five years coming from Rye.
During the Korean War he served in the United States Army Medical Corps as a captain.
He practiced internal medicine, specializing in cardiology in the Bronx for over 35 years. He was the director of Internal Medicine at Union Hospital, the Bronx.
Mr. McGowan was also affiliated with Our Lady of Mercy Hospital and Fordham University, both in the Bronx.
Dr. McGowan was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Palm City; Resurrection Catholic Church, Rye; and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, Brookfield; the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, the American Medical Association, Wingfoot Golf Club, Mamaroneck, N.Y.; Candlewood Lake Club, Brookfield; and the Evergreen Country Club, Palm City.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Martin Jr. of Seattle, Christopher and his wife Andrea of Cincinnati, and James and his wife Lauren of Rye; three daughters, Tara M. Goldman and her husband Jay of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Lake Worth, Fla., Virginia M. Gray and her husband William of Stamford and Leanne M. McGowan of Rye; and five grandchildren.

Gerardine Herbert, 70, former New Milford resident
Gerardine “Gerry” (Kenny) Herbert, 70, of Heritage Village, Southbury, formerly of New Milford, died Jan. 19 at Danbury Hospital. She was the widow of Dennis K. Herbert.
Mrs. Herbert was born Aug. 11, 1930, in New York City, daughter of the late Gerard and Grace (McCarthy) Kenny.
She was an assistant town clerk for the town of Southbury before retirement.
She is survived by two sons, Dennis of Southbury and Kevin of New Milford; three daughters, Nancy of New Fairfield and Patricia Osborn and Kathleen, both of Southbury; a sister, Maria Brech of Mahopac, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.
All services are private. The Southbury Home of Munson-Lovetere handled arrangements.

John W. Smith, 70, was a resident of Warren
John W. Smith, 70, of Woodville Road, Warren, died Jan. 22 at his home. He was the husband of Martha (Geck) Smith.
Mr. Smith was born April 14, 1930, in the Bronx, N.Y., son of the late Joseph J. and Anna (Huber) Smith.
He was a retired systems analyst for the Raytheon Company.
Mr. Smith was a member and one of the founders of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Bantam. He served as church secretary and a church elder. He was also an active member of the Warren Prime Timers.
Besides his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Christopher of Warren; a daughter, Anita Busam of Ellicott City, Md.; a brother, Joseph of Beckett, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at the Warren Congregational Church, Sackett Hill Road.

Margaret G. Hope, 81, former K-C employee
Margaret (Peg) G. Hope, 81, of New Milford died Jan. 18 at the home of her daughter. She was the wife of the late Roger P. Hope Sr.
Mrs. Hope was born March 21, 1919, in Middlebury, Vt., a daughter of the late John W. and Belle B. Pinney.
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 1672 of New Milford.
She was employed by Kimberly-Clark for over 25 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club.
Mrs. Hope is survived by a sister, Mary Harrison of Florida.; four sons, Tom and Jerry, both of New Milford, Barry of Florida, and Roger Jr. of Virginia; a daughter, Bonny Molella of New Milford; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Ann Brutz, and two granddaughters, Kim Marie (Hope) Termiriello and Stephanie Ann Molella.
The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Andrew Mazur, 88, father of New Milford woman
Andrew Joseph (Andy) Mazur, 88, died Jan. 22 at Mediplex of Danbury. He was the husband of Mary A. (Mraz) Mazur.
Mr. Mazur was born in Jastrobie, Czechoslovakia, May 24, 1912. He immigrated to the United States shortly after his marriage in 1938, thereafter settling in New York.
He worked several jobs and eventually worked his way up to own and operate A & P Cornell Bar & Grill in New York City.
He moved his family to Danbury in the early 1950s. After selling his business in the mid 1960s, he worked various jobs in the Danbury area.
Mr. Mazur was a founding member of St. Gregory the Great Church, a member and past president of its Holy Name Society, its Lay Advisory Board, as well as a former head usher and volunteer caretaker.
He was also a member of the McGivney Council, Knights of Columbus, the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department, Slovak Jedneta Society and the Slovak Sokol Lodge.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mary Vostinar and her husband Edward of Dumont, N.J., Helen Woodward and her husband Dwight of Wausau, Wis., Irene Mazur of New Milford and Ann L. Morits and her hsuband Randall of Danbury; three grandsons, Kevin Vostinar of Dumont and Andrew and Matthew Woodward of Wausau.
The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury handled arrangements.
