Angelo J. Licursi

Angelo J. Licursi died Saturday March 13, 1999, at his home in New Port Richey, Fla., after an illness of several months. He was married to Barbara Fanning Licursi. He was born in Danbury March 2, 1938, the son of Luigi and Lena Licursi.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Licursi is survived by two sons, Kevin of California and Jeffrey of Georgia; two daughters, Karen May and Kathy McWilliams of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three brothers, Vincent of Newtown, Anthony of Brookfield, and Gene of Newtown; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Military services were held Thursday, March 18, in Palm Harbor, Fla.

Doris M. Creter

Doris M. Creter of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Danbury, died March 18, 1999.

She was born on May 22, 1958 in the Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Sarasota 19 years ago from Danbury. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, John M.; two daughters, Dawn M. and Tiffany, both of Sarasota; a son, Brian M. of Fort Campbell, Ky.; two sisters, Chris Baker of Camarillo, Calif. and Carol Fritz of Austin, Texas; four brothers, George and Richard Wimmer, both of Bradenton, Fla., Peter Wimmer of Guilford, Conn. and Anthony Wimmer of Bradenton; and her mother, Doris M. Wimmer of Bradenton.

The service will be Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, in Sarasota, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1750 17th St. Suite A, Sarasota, FL 34234 or to Lupus Foundation of America, 4 Research Place, Rockville, MD 20850-3226.

James R. Childs

James R. Childs, age 38, of Sandy Hook died Sunday, March 21, 1999 in Trinity Hills Hospice, Hartford, Conn.

Mr. Childs was born in Washington, D.C., on July 15, 1960, a son of James J. Childs of Bowling Green, Va. and the late Naomi (Dimmie) Childs. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Newtown Youth Services.

In addition to his father, Mr. Childs is survived by two daughters, Kendra of Virginia and Naomi of Sandy Hook; a brother, Tyrone Childs of Virginia; two sisters, Angela Childs and Yvette Jones, both of Maryland; and an aunt, Geneva Parker of Bowling Green, Va.

A Memorial Service will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Newtown Congregational Church. Cremation will take place at Mountain Grove Crematory, Bridgeport. There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown.

Gladys McAlley McHann

Gladys (McAlley) McHann, 59, of 31 Taylor St., New Milford, died Monday, March 22, 1999 at her home.

Mrs. McHann was born in New Milford on February 22, 1940, daughter of the late Robert and Annetta (McBath) McAlley.

She had been a school crossing guard at Grove Street and Route 67 for many years.

She is survived by two sons, James McHann Jr. of New Milford and Frederick McHann of Marietta, Ga.; three daughters, Patricia Dyer and Kimberly Whitcomb, both of New Milford, and Dawn Ferriss of Quantico, Va.; one brother, Frederick McAlley of New Milford; three sisters, Annetta Volinski, Nancy Shields and Elizabeth Wyant, all of New Milford; and five grandchildren.

Private funeral services are Friday at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Interment is at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Western Connecticut Chapter, 1 Selleck St. Suite 500, Norwalk, CT 06855.

Charlotte Gussow

Charlotte Stearns Smith Gussow of Broadmead Community, Cockeysville, MD, died March 11, 1999. She was the beloved wife of the late James Kinnear Gussow, Sr. and devoted mother of Priscilla T. Spahn of Randolph, VT and James K. Gussow, Jr. of Southbury, CT. Dear sister of the late Theodora E. Smith. Cherished grandmother of Katherine Lounsbury of Colchester, CT. Also survived by 2 great-grandchildren.

Services and inurnment are private. In lieu of flowers, expression of sympathy may be directed in Mrs. Gussow's name to Broadmead Special Needs Fund, 13801 York Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Arrangements by Lemmon Funeral Home, Timonium, MD.

Alice C. Turner

Alice C. Turner, 99, the widow of Wilburt Lemuel Turner, died Saturday at Ashlar of Newtown.

She was born at Short Beach, Stratford, Conn., on Jan. 18, 1900, a daughter of Frederick E. and Annie M. Ruggles Nearing.

Mrs. Turner attended Sedgewick School in Stratford, Connecticut. She worked with her husband who owned the New Milford Paint and Wallpaper Company in New Milford from 1931 to 1957. After retiring, they lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mrs. Turner returned to Stratford in 1980. She had resided at Ashlar of Newtown since 1991. Mrs. Turner was a member of the Eastern Star, Lodge O.E.S. Armee #99 for more than 50 years.

She is survived by her nephew Edwin Fordham of Stratford. She was predeceased by her children, Wilburt Jr. and Richard Turner, Bernice Platt and Evelyn Johnson and was predeceased by three sisters and one brother, Ruby Nearing Fordham, Marion Nearing Tanner, Lillian Nearing Downs and William M. Nearing.

Calling Hours: Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury.

Services: Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead. Burial will follow at the Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.

Kieran Keegan

Kieran (Terry) Keegan, 63, of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., died Saturday March 20, 1999, at home under the care of Florida Suncoast Hospice. He was born in New York City and was formerly from Putnam Lake, N.Y. where he owned several restaurants and bars.

He was also a member of Local 201 Asbestos Workers Union of N.Y. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Carol Ann, two sons Kieran and Michael and a daughter Carol, all of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., a brother Walter of Carmel, N.Y., and a sister Josephine Murphy of Florida. Hubbell Funeral Home, Belleair Bluffs, Fla. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Florida Suncoast Hospice, 300 E. Bay Dr., Largo, FL 33770.

James R. Dolan

James R. Dolan, 85, of 5 Gregory Drive, New Milford, husband of Elizabeth McMahon Dolan, died Monday at his home.

Mr. Dolan had served a number of years on the former New Milford Board of Selectman, later serving one term on the present Town Council in New Milford.

He was born in New Milford, Jan. 8, 1914, a son of Albert M. and Alice Roche Dolan. He spent his early life in the Gaylordsville section of New Milford, attended the former Gaylordsville one-room school, and later graduated from New Milford High School in the Class of 1931.

He had been employed at the former First National Stores in New Milford from 1932 to 1977 retiring as a manager.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Ezra Woods Post 31 American Legion of New Milford.

Long active in the community of New Milford, he was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Church, a member of Housatonic Council #40 Knights of Columbus of which he had served as a past Grand Knight, also a member of the Rev. John D. Kennedy Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of Danbury.

In Gaylordsville, he had been a charter member of the Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department and had served as treasurer for 33 years. He was a member of the Merwinsville Hotel Restoration of Gaylordsville, the Gaylordsville Historical Society, and the former Wemanesa Grange of Gaylordsville. He was also a longtime member of the New Milford Historical Society and served as treasurer from 1985 to 1994. He was a member of the National AARP as well as the local chapter of New Milford having served as a past president. He was a member of the New Milford Historical Soeiety and served as treasurer from 1985-1994. He was also a member of the John A. Gildea Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Danbury. He had been honored on St. Patrick's Day 1999 as New Milford's Irishman of the Year.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Denis P. Dolan of New Milford, three grandchildren, Kevin J. Dolan, Ryan J. Dolan and Patrick T. Dolan, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is on Thursday 10:30 a.m. from the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford to St. Francis Xavier Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment in St. Francis Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8. p.m.

Richard H. O'Brien

Richard H. O'Brien died March 20, 1999 at his home, 10 Silvermine Manor, Brookfield at the age of 59.

He was the husband of Barbara Beck O'Brien. He was born in Evanston, Ill. May 27, 1939 son of the late James V. and Mary Coyne O'Brien. He attended Marquette University on an Evans Scholarship and graduated from Loyola University with a B.A. in history. Mr. O'Brien was Training Director of the Ruben H. Donnelley Co. for 35 years and retired in 1998. He had lived in Brookfield since 1986 and was a member of St. Joseph Church in Brookfield, the Conn. Audubon Society. The American Birding Assoc., and the Western CT Bird Club. He was an avid golfer and a 50 year fan of the Chicago Cubs Baseball Club.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters Mary Margaret and Moira Elizabeth O'Brien both of Chicago. His three brothers and their spouses, Thomas and Betty, James and Kathy, and Timothy and Denise O'Brien, his three sisters-in-law and their spouses Mary Sue and Frank Schmidt, Margaret and Dennis O'Keefe and Anne Beck all of the Chicago area. Several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Brookfield. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Memorial services will also be held in Chicago at a date to be announced.

Friends may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Rd., Brookfield on Friday from 4 to 8 pm.

Herbert E. Schultz

Herbert E. Schultz, 64, of 175 Beard Drive, New Milford, died Sunday, March 21, at New Milford Hospital.

Mr. Schultz was born in New Jersey, March 3, 1935, a son of Ernest and Phyllis Enfield Schultz. He had lived a greater part of his life in New Milford, was a graduate of New Milford High School Class of 1953, and was employed for many years at the former R.A. Kershaw Paving Contractors in New Milford. He later established H.E. Schultz Trucking which he operated from 1971 to 1998. He was last employed by Washed Aggregate Resources Inc. of Wassaic, N.Y.

He is survived by four sons, Donald E. Schultz of Menasha, Wisc., Dean E. Schultz of Danbury, and Daryl F. Schultz and Corey D. Schultz, both of New Milford; and two granddaughters, Tricia Schultz and Nicole Schultz. He was predeceased by his former wife, Nancy Larson Schultz.

Funeral services on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Interment in Center Cemetery, New Milford.

Friends may call in the hour preceding the service.

Contributions in his memory to the Book of Remembrance at St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 179, New Milford 06776.

Alfred J. Arsenault Jr.

Mr. Alfred J. Arsenault, Jr., 66, of 27 Hilldale Drive, Sandy Hook, died Sunday, March 21st, at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Mavis R. (Allen) Arsenault.

Mr. Arsenault was born June 13, 1932, in New London, Conn., son of Madeline Arsenault of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, and the late Alfred J. Arsenault Sr. He worked at Fairfield Hills in Newtown for 30 years, the last 15 years as head cook, retiring in 1987. He was active with the Newtown Civil Defense and was a member of the Emergency Responders Association. He was a resident of Sandy Hook for 41 years.

Besides his wife and mother, he leaves two sons, Bruce G. Arsenault of Thomaston and Walter M. Royals of Monroe; one daughter, Diane M. Arsenault of Thomaston; one brother, Eric Arsenault of St. John, New Brunswick; one sister, Rose Connors of Nackawick, New Brunswick; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 24, at 3 p.m. at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be private.

Giovanni Avallone

Giovanni B. Avallone died March 20, 1999 at his home, 4 Racebrook Dr. in Bethel, at the age of 78. He was the husband of Marietta Cima Avallone and had lived in this area since 1965.

He was born in Castellammare DiStabia, Naples, Italy son of the late Francesco and Maria Cira Cesino Avallone. He was a veteran of the Italian Navy and was a POW in Egypt and South Africa from 1940 to 1948.

Mr. Avallone was well known as "Papa" and was a pastry chef for over 30 years, first on South Street and again on Liberty Street in Danbury. He also was owner and operator of the Old Sorrento Restaurant and Pastry Shop on Newtown Road in Danbury. He was a member of St. Mary Church in Bethel.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons: Frank and his wife Antoinetta of Bethel and Paul and his wife Gabriela of Italy. 4 grandsons; John and Frank Jr. of Bethel and Giovanni and Paul Jr. of Italy. He also is survived by his brother Vincenzo of Italy and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tues. at 10 at St. Mary Church proceeding from the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury at 9:15am. Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home on Monday from 5 to 8pm.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492 in his memory.

Mary Poklemba

Mary (Makrai) Poklemba, 77, of Hillsboro, New Hampshire, died Fri. March 19, 1999 at the Hospice House in Concord, NH.

She was born in Fairfield, CT, the daughter of the late Gesa and Mary (Magyar) Makrai. She lived in Bethel, CT, for many years before moving to Hillsboro 10 years ago.

Mrs. Poklemba was predeceased by her husband John J. Poklemba Sr. who died in 1995, and 2 brothers, William & Gus Makrai.

Mrs. Poklemba was a baker for the Bethel School Department for many years before her retirement.

Survived by 3 sons, John J. Poklemba Jr. of Bethel, CT, Michael Poklemba of Brookfield, CT, David Poklemba of Bethel, CT. 1 daughter, Jan M. Martin of Warner, NH. 1 brother, Joseph Makrai of Fairfield, CT. 12 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, several nieces & nephews.

There are no calling hours.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family, Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, CT.

Donations may be made in her name to the Hospice House, P.O. Box 1797, Concord, NH 03301-1797.

The Holt-Woodbury & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 32 School St., Hillsboro, NH is in charge of arrangements.
