Timothy Powell
Timothy M. Powell, 50, of Mile Hill Road, Sandy Hook, and commander of the George A. Powell American Legion Post 202 in Newtown, died Thursday in the Grand Cayman Islands.

Mr. Powell was born in Danbury Dec. 8, 1946, the son of Ethel Lucas Powell of Lantana, Fla., and the late George Powell. He lived in Newtown most of his life.

He worked as chief engineer at the power house at the former Fairfield Hills Hospital.

A Vietnam War veteran, he served the United States Army.

Besides being commander of the American Legion post named for his father, he was a member and former assistant chief of the Sandy Hook volunteer fire department.

Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Timothy Powell Jr. of Sandy Hook, a fiancee, Linda O'Hara; two brothers, George of Newtown and Peter of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Joy Loveland of Springfield, Vt., Seil Zyla of Lake Worth, Fla., Donna Humphreys of Coleman, Fla., and Kim Powell of Sandy Hook.

Contributions may be made to the George A. Powell American Legion Post 202, Newtown 06470; or the Sandy Hook Fire Co., Sandy Hook 06482.

SERVICES: Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery.

Doris Rougvie
A Memorial Mass for Doris ``Doe'' Heno Rougvie will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Edward's Church in New Fairfield.

Mrs. Rougvie died Feb. 1 at her home in New Fairfield at the age of 68.

Following the service, refreshments will be served at the church hall.

Sheila Sullivan
Sheila McKenna Sullivan, 85, a former Ridgefield resident, died March 20 in Venice, Fla.

She was the wife of the late Dennis P. Sullivan Sr.

Mrs. Sullivan was born on May 2, 1911, in County Kerry, Ireland.

Before her retirement, she had been employed for many years as a supervisor for Delta Interiors in New York City.

A Ridgefield resident before moving to Florida in 1976, Mrs. Sullivan was a member of the Epiphany Catholic Cathedral in Venice.

Mrs. Sullivan is survived by a son, Dennis P. Sullivan Jr. of Ridgefield; a daughter, Maureen Maucher of Venice; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 5899 Whitfield Ave., #200, Sarasota, FL 34243.

A memorial service will be conducted on a date to be announced.

W. Schirmer Jr.
Waldemar A. ``Wally'' Schirmer Jr., 68, a retired electrician for the former Delta Electric Co., died Tuesday at his home at 7 Hebert Drive, New Milford.

Mr. Schirmer was born in New Milford on Jan. 2, 1929, a son of Waldemar A. Schirmer Sr. and Gertrude Carlson Schirmer Vigna.

He was a graduate of the Henry Abbott Regional High School in Danbury.

Mr. Schirmer spent his early years in Danbury and moved to New Milford in 1969. While living in Danbury, he served as a member and former chief of the Beaver Brook Volunteer Fire Dept.

Before his retirement in 1977, Mr. Schirmer had been employed for many years as an electrician for the former Delta Electric Company.

He is survived by a son, Waldemar; a daughter, Linda of West Redding; a sister, Alloise Straiton of New Fairfield; a brother, Duane of Danbury; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in his memory may be made to New Milford Hospital, New Milford 06776.

CALLING HOURS: Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

SERVICES: Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Crawford Harmon of the Central Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.

Laurence E. Honan
Laurence E. Honan, 87, an acclaimed concert pianist and a former Danbury music school owner and operator, died Monday at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

He was a resident of 309 Glen Ayre Drive, New Milford.

Mr. Honan was born on Dec. 19, 1909, in the Gaylordsville section of New Milford, a son of Edward A. and Alice Brague Honah.

He attended schools in Gaylordsville and was a 1926 graduate of New Milford High School. He was also a graduate of the Yale University School of Music.

Mr. Honan was an acclaimed concert pianist who performed across the United States. He lived in Danbury for many years, where he owned and operated a music studio.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford.

Mr. Honan is survived by several nieces, Alice H. Lillis of New Milford, Rita B. Burdick of Missouri, and Kay Cushman of New Hampshire; and a nephew, Thomas Honan Jr. of Washington.

CALLING HOURS: Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.

SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 12:15 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.

N. DeGruttola Sr.
Nicholas DeGruttola Sr., of Roxbury, died yesterday at Danbury Hospital.

He was the husband of Rose V. Gaudioso DeGruttola of 102 Southbury Road, Roxbury.

Mr. DeGruttola was born on May 27, 1923, in Bridgeport, a son of Ralph and Margaret Aiello DeGruttola.

Before his retirement, he had been employed for many years as a head custodian for the Monroe school system.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he had been a Bridgeport resident before moving to Roxbury 16 years ago.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Nicholas of Southbury; a daughter, Virginia R. Mavuli of Roxbury, with whom he made his home; a brother, Ralph of Pompano Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Grace Zeffiro of Shelton and Josephine Pirozzoli of Trumbull; and four grandchildren.

Contributions in memory of Mr. DeGruttola may be made to Food for the Poor, 550 SW 12th Avenue, #4, Deerfield Beach, FL 33442; or the Roxbury Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 94, Roxbury 06783-0094.

Hedwig M. Seidel
Hedwig M. Seidel, 87, a longtime resident of Pawling, N.Y., died yesterday at the Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, N.Y.

She was the wife of Felix O. Seidel of Pawling.

Mrs. Seidel was born on March 23, 1910, in Selcia, Germany, a daughter of Paul and Martha Sirpinski Gorlt.

She attended schools in Germany before moving to the United States at the age of 18. She had been a 42-year resident of Astoria, Queens, N.Y., before moving to Pawling.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Harris F. Seidel of Rome, N.Y.; a brother, Paul Gorlt of Germany; a sister, Gretel Stenzel of German; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Seidel may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.

There are no calling hours. The Dwyer Funeral Home in Patterson, N.Y., is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services will be private.

Joseph P. McKenney
Joseph P. McKenney, 91, a retired salesman for the Sears & Roebuck Co. in Danbury, died Tuesday at Danbury Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Mary Harty McKenney and had lived at 51 Main St., Danbury.

Mr. McKenney was born in Danbury on March 13, 1906, a son of Patrick and Alice Haughey McKenney.

He was a 1924 graduate of Danbury High School and an Army veteran of World War II.

Before retiring in 1971, Mr. McKenney had worked as a furniture salesman for the Sears & Roebuck Co. in Danbury.

A lifelong Danbury resident, Mr. McKenney served as a toastmaster at many community events. In his later years, he was considered a Danbury historian because of his vast knowledge of local history.

Mr. McKenney was an active member of St. Peter's Church in Danbury, where he served as an usher and member of the lay advisory board.

Mr. McKenney is survived by 25 nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Friday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

SERVICES: Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Danbury.

Stasia T. Perret
Stasia T. Kozloski Perret, 86, of Bethel, died Tuesday at Danbury Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Marcel A. Perret and had lived on Long Meadow Lane.

Mrs. Perret was born on Sept. 15, 1910, in Lawrence, Mass., a daughter of the late William and Johanna Pogarselki Kozloski.

Before her retirement, she had worked for many years as a bookkeeper in New York City. She later worked as a watchmaker in her husband's family business. Mrs. Perret was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as an aviation machinist.

She was a resident of Sarasota, Fla., before moving to Bethel in 1996.

Mrs. Perret is survived by a niece, Maureen A. Campbell of Bethel, with whom she made her home; a nephew, Kenneth G. Kerr of Bethel; and two great-nieces.

There are no calling hours. The Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, is in charge of arrangements.

SERVICES: Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence.

Irene Saxton Smith
Irene Saxton Smith, 90, a retired home economics teacher for the John Pettibone School in New Milford, died Tuesday at the New Milford Nursing Home.

She was the wife of the late Charles C. Smith and had lived at 2 Taylor St., New Milford.

Mrs. Smith was born on March 5, 1907, in Bristol, a daughter of George and Nellie Saxton.

She was a 1925 graduate of Bristol High School and a 1929 graduate of the Connecticut Agricultural College.

Before her retirement, Mrs. Smith had worked as a home economics teacher for the John Pettibone School in New Milford. She had previously worked for many years at the former First National supermarket in New Milford.

She was a 65-year member of Metichewan Grange #190 in New Milford and a member of the Armee Chapter #99, Order of the Eastern Star in New Milford. She had served as a pianist for both organizations.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the UConn Alumni Assoc. and the Museum of National HIstory at the University of Connecticut.

She had been a resident of Hudson Falls, N.Y., before moving to New Milford in 1949.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Kenneth G. Smith of Southbury; a daughter, Carolyn Lois Watkins of Sandy Hook; a brother, Randall P. Saxton of Arizona; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Book of Remembrance at the First Congregational Church, Main Street, New Milford 06776; or the Hospice Homecare Program, New Milford VNA, 68 Park Lane Road, New Milford 06776.

Martha F. Grote
Martha F. Grote, 77, of Ridgefield, died Wednesday at her home.

She was the wife of William J. Grote.

Mrs. Grote was born in Hoboken, N.J., Oct. 7, 1919, a daughter of Charles F. and Martha Meany. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle, Class of 1940, where she had been active on the alumni association and was responsible for her 50- and 55-year class reunions.

She lived in Crestwood, N.Y., for 42 years until she moved to Ridgefield two months ago. She had previously taught school in New Jersey.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield and a former member of the Annunciation Parish in Crestwood, N.Y. She was also a member of the Ladies of Charity, the St. Elizabeth Guild and the Winged Foot Golf Club.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Grote is survived by a son, William Grote III of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Barbara Reddington of Ridgefield; a brother, Dr. John Meany of Riveredge, N.J.; a sister, Mary Hallinan of Berke, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Thomas J. Nolan
Thomas J. Nolan, 73, of Carmel, N.Y., died Thursday at Putnam Hospital Center.

He was the husband of Frances Conrad Nolan.

Mr. Nolan was born in the Bronx, N.Y., March 18, 1924, a son of Dennis and Martha Beck Nolan.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked as an educational warehouse supervisor for Educational Audio-visual and Educational Enrichment Materials in Bedford, N.Y., until his retirement in 1986. He also worked part time at Bergers Hardware in Hawthorne, N.Y.

He was a Scoutmaster for Troop 1 in Hawthorne, N.Y., for 11 years and was active with the Senior Citizens Club, Carmel Drop In and Golden Age Seniors. He was a member of St. James the Apostle Church in Carmel, N.Y.

Besides his wife, Mr. Nolan is survived by two daughters, Joyce Reichardt of Hawthorne, N.Y., and Judith Kitts of Patterson, N.Y.; a sister, Katherine Otis of Bronx, N.Y.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Warren Nolan; and two sisters, Martha Sheehan and Ruth Caldwell.

SERVICES: Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. James the Apostle Church, Carmel, N.Y. Burial will be private. Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Terrace, Brewster, N.Y., is in charge of arrangements.

Prentiss G. Tallman
Prentiss Grant Tallman, 49, of Danbury, died Tuesday at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Tallman was born in Danbury on April 1, 1948, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Benson Tallman Sr. He graduated from Henry Abbott Regional Technical High School, Class of 1967, and played on its award-winning basketball team. He attended Ohio University and Western Connecticut State University.

He was a self-employed contractor and painter.

Mr. Tallman is survived by a son, Private First Class Jared G. Tallman of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; a daughter, Elizabeth James-Tallman of Danbury; six brothers, Paul B. Tallman Jr., Phillip D. Tallman, Rev. Preston J. Tallman and Parker D. Tallman, all of Danbury, and Peter W. Tallman of Jacksonville, N.C., and Patrick H. Tallman of Hartford; and five sisters, Pauline E. Smith, Phoebe M. Grimes, Phyllis P. Tallman and Penny L. Tallman-Ferguson, all of Danbury, and Patricia A. Robinson of Waterbury.

Gladys Gerace
Gladys Gerace, 68, a longtime Weston resident, died Wednesday at Norwalk Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Charles Gerace.

Mrs. Gerace was born in Wilton on March 23, 1929, a daughter of William R. and Clara May Bishop Scribner.

She worked in the cafeteria department of the Wilton school system and later assisted the elderly in Wilton and contributed to the maintenance of the Wilton Historical Society.

Mrs. Gerace is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Schneider of Wilton and Barbara Scribner of Bethel; two brothers, Irving Scribner and Robert Scribner of Bethel; and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bouton Funeral Home, West Church St., Georgetown.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Georgetown United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in Branchville Cemetery, Ridgefield.
