Mary Sullivan

Mary Grace (Garavel) Sullivan, 66, of 95 Thompkins Ave., East Longmeadow, MA, died Aug. 5, 2000, in Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA.

Born in Danbury, CT, she had lived in Meriden, CT, before moving to East Longmeadow in 1959. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in East Longmeadow and a former member of its Women's Club.

She was a graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Hartford, CT.

She is survived by her son, John F. Sullivan, with whom she lived; four daughters, Kathleen E. McBryar of West Springfield, MA, Karen A. Adams of New Milford, CT, Laurie M. Sullivan of Hampden, MA, and Mary Jo Sullivan of Springfield, MA; two brothers, James Garavel of Danbury, CT, and Gerald Garavel of Ridgefield, CT; and 10 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Kevin R. Sullivan, who died in 1983, and a brother, Bobby Garavel, who died in 1999.

The funeral is Wednesday at 9 a.m. from Hafey East Longmeadow Chapels, 120 Shaker Road, East Longmeadow, followed by a Mass in St. Michael's Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Springfield, at the convenience of the family.

Visiting hours are Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Teodalina DeSalas

Teodalina DeSalas, 100, of Brookfield, Conn., was lifted to heaven on Aug. 6, 2000, at High View Convalescent Home in Middletown, Conn., after a lengthy illness.

She was the wife of the late Alfredo DeSalas of Santa Fe, Argentina.

Mrs. DeSalas was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, on Dec. 6, 1899. She moved to the U.S. in 1971 and made her home with her daughter, Wilma Atanasoff and son-in-law, Peter Atanasoff, in Brookfield, Conn.

Mrs. DeSalas gained her U.S. citizenship at age 99. Her love and dedication to her family and God was her greatest contribution and her kindness touched many in her life.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Wilma Atanasoff,' two grandchildren, Sergio Atanasoff of Danbury, Conn., and Marisa Frisk of Middletown, Conn.; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held at Saint Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Middletown, Conn., on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 9 a.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Divine Mercy Missionaries, 18 Vail Road, Brookfield, CT 06804.

Barney Schenker

Barney Schenker, a retired New York City Fire Chief, of 8 Carol St., Danbury, died Aug. 6, 2000.

Devoted husband of Fannie (Herbst) Schenker, he was the beloved father of Harriet Krate, Marion Frankel and Sander Schenker, all of Danbury; the dear brother of Abraham "Al" Schenker of Danbury, Benjamin Schenker of Oceanside, N.Y., and the late Leo, Joseph and Shirley Schenker. Mr. Schenker is also survived by nine loving grandchildren and 12 adoring great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the United Jewish Center, 141 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, with interment services to follow in the United Jewish Center Cemetery, Gray's Bridge Road, Brookfield.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Congregation Mount Moses, c/o Fannie Schenker, 8 Carol St., Danbury, CT 06810.

A period of mourning will be observed at 8 Carol St., Danbury.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven.

Marie Wright

Marie Morabito Wright, age 60, of Danbury, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Wright was born in Portchester, New York, December 29, 1939, a daughter of the late Fred and Jean Como Morabito. She was a resident of Redding for many years before moving to Danbury, and had worked at the National Organization of Rare Disorders in New Fairfield.

She is survived by 2 sons, Steven Wright of Bridgeport, CT, and Marc Wright of Darien, CT; a brother, James Morabito of Bethel, CT, as well as 3 nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Saturday at a time to be announced.

Armenia Josephine Roth

Armenia Josephine Roth, 86, formerly of 198 Main Street, Danbury, died Tuesday at Mediplex of Darien.

Mrs. Roth was the wife of the late William M. Roth Sr.

She was born in Danbury, Connecticut, September 23, 1913, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Bessie (Patterson) Fisher. Raised in Danbury, she was a member of Central Christian Church in Danbury and a member of the Rebeccah Lodge.

She is survived by her son, William Roth of California; her sister, Adeline Stein of Danbury; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury. The Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.

Judy P. Fellows

Judy P. Fellows, 72, of Sand Hill Road, Sandy Hook, CT, died Wednesday, August 9, 2000, at Danbury Hospital

She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1928; graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School; and studied dance. She danced for the USO in the 1940s as a member of Gay Foster 's Roxyettes at the Roxy Theater in New York City, and also as a solo performer throughout the 1950s. She married entertainer Billy Fellows, and they traveled the country before starting a family.

She settled in Newtown in 1971 and worked at The Blue Colony Diner as a hostess and waitress for over 20 years.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Andrews, and her four children: Susan Fellows Gannon, Mary Fellows Conk, Scott Fellows and Mark Fellows who, like their parents, pursued careers in entertainment and the arts, which made her very proud. Ms. Fellows also leaves five grandchildren: Jack, Cleo, Charlie, Paris June and Wes, whom she loved very much.

A memorial service will be held at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, CT, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Father William Padgett of St. John's Episcopal Church of Sandy Hook, officiating.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Danbury Hospital Oncology Dept./8 East, 24 Hospital Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.

Everett H. Hopkins

Everett H. Hopkins, 74, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Danbury, died August 8, 2000, at Winter Haven Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Hopkins.

Born in Danbury, March 11, 1926, he had lived in Florida since 1952. He was a retired carpenter; a member of the Episcopal faith; and a U.S. Navy veteran who had served during World War II and the Korean War.

Surviving are two sons, John R. Hopkins of Fort Myers, Fla., and James R. Hopkins of Winter Haven, Fla.; a daughter, Donna M. Smiley of Winter Haven, Fla.; 7 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Hopkins.

Visitation hours are Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 125 High Street, Winter Haven, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Hospice or to the American Cancer Society. Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home of Winter Haven is in charge of arrangements.

Lorraine Parente

Lorraine Parente of Yonkers, N.Y., died August 8, 2000. Loving mother of Lynn Burke, Diane Carlson and Cindy Wyda. Beloved grandmother of Carrie, Joseph, Frank and Billy. Reposing at Flynn Memorial Home, 1652 Central Ave., Yonkers, N.Y., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass Friday 11 a.m. at St. Eugene's Church, Yonkers, N.Y. Ernest Ruopp

Ernest Ruopp dies Wednesday at home

Ernest J. Ruopp's Life in Christ

Ernie Ruopp was born in Danbury, CT, the fifth of 10 children of George and Anna Schulze Ruopp on August 31, 1915.

He received his elementary education at Immanuel Lutheran School and studied at Henry Abbott Trade School in Danbury. For many years he worked first as a mechanic and progressed to service manager at Van Houten Motors. It was there that he met Charlie Bardo. Charlie quickly introduced him to his sister, Grace, a nurse working in the New York area.

Ernie and Grace were married on October 15, 1939. They built a home and Christmas tree farm on Spruce Mountain Road in Danbury, where they lived for 52 years.

Ernie and his brother, Ted, operated Sipperly Artesian Well Co. After losing most of his right hand in a drilling accident in 1960, he worked as a maintenance engineer.

In their retirement, he loved helping Grace care for infants in their home, playing with them and telling them many creative stories.

Ernie served Immanuel Lutheran Congregation in many offices, especially as a trustee and Sunday School teacher. As a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years, he challenged hundreds of students to new levels of contemplation of God's Word and its application to their lives. He also enjoyed the Couples' Club and faithfully mimeographed the "Voice of Immanuel" for many years.

As a Boy Scout leader, he hosted numerous camp-outs, complete with original stories, on his Spruce Mountain property.

Since 1993, he's been living with his son and daughter-in-law in Raleigh, N.C., where he received dedicated and loving care.

Ernie is survived by a daughter, Sandy Clark (Dan) of Arvada, CO; a son, David E. Ruopp (Peggy) of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Christa Lang, Lillian Bardo and Helen Ruopp; his brothers, Martin, Ted, Paul and Fred, all of the Danbury area.

Funeral services will be conducted from Immanuel Lutheran Church, West Street, Danbury, Monday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. Daniel Wehmeier, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, Sunday, at a time to be announced.

Sherwood D. Poole

Sherwood D. Poole, age 69, of 18 Simeon Road, Bethel, CT, died Thursday at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Helen Marie Howe Poole, with whom he had celebrated 50 years of marriage in November.

Mr. Poole was born in New Canaan, CT, Sept. 1, 1930, a son of the late Delbert Poole and Mildred Brooks Stearns. Formerly of Darien, he had been a Bethel resident since 1972, and had been employed by Noroco, Inc., in Georgetown.

Mr. Poole was a member of the 43rd Infantry Division, US Army, from 1947 to 1952, serving in Germany. He was a member of the AARP in Bethel, enjoyed ceramics at the Bethel Senior Center and also enjoyed building model airplanes and boats.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, John S. Poole of Danbury, CT; one granddaughter, Julia M. Poole of Waterbury, CT; one sister, Marion Greene of New Hampshire; one brother, Albert Poole of Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald E. Poole.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Connecticut Affiliate, P.O. Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492-7522 or to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897-2523.

The funeral will be held at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Saturday morning, August 12th, at 10:00. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Bethel.

The family will receive friends at the Bethel Funeral Home, Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

William Hood

William Robert Hood, 74, of New Fairfield, Connecticut, died Thursday at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Hood was the husband of Elizabeth (Dreska) Hood.

He was born in New York City, October 6, 1925, a son of the late William and May (Casey) Hood.

Mr. Hood was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Navy.

After moving to New Fairfield in 1952, he was employed by Sperry Products and retired from the Risdon Corporation after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Putnam Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and a charter member of the VFW in Putnam Lake. He was an avid bowler and a member of the Risdon Corporation's Bowling League for over 20 years. He also loved fishing.

Besides his wife Elizabeth of 48 years, he is survived by three sons, Robert Hood and his wife Michelle of New Milford, Steven Hood and his wife Frances of Danbury, and David Hood of New Fairfield; a daughter, Christine Aldridge and her husband Charles of Danbury; eight grandchildren, Stephanie and Dennis Believe, Robert and Nicholas Hood of New Milford, Melissa and Jillian Hood of Danbury, Meghan and Kaitlin Aldridge of Danbury; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice and Lucille.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Connecticut Affiliate Inc., 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main St., Danbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church, New Fairfield. Burial will follow in Mountainview Cemetery.
