Robert McKay

Robert "Bob" McKay, beloved husband of Shirley (Clark) McKay of Paulden, Arizona, formerly of Peoria, Arizona, and Bethel, Connecticut, departed this life on Wednesday, December 29, 1999, after a brief illness.

He was born in Georgetown, Connecticut, on October 19, 1926, son of the late James and Evelyn Hathaway McKay. Bob grew up in Bethel and was a graduate of Bethel High School. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving from 1944 to 1946 in the "Seabee's."

He served the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years. He worked all his life as a carpenter. He was an avid bow hunter, and, with his wife, formed an archery group for children with the Bethel Department of Recreation. He loved flying and had his pilot's license and his own plane for many years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a cherished daughter, Kathleen Van Der Jagt and her husband Ron of Granby, CT; three devoted step-children, Teresa Servin and her husband Peter of Covina, CA, Gary Collier of Oroville, CA, and Shirley Banes and her husband John of Phoenix, AZ; his two adoring sisters, Jean Burritt and her husband John of Redding, CT, and Helen Rowan and her husband Vincent of Carlsbad, NM. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, as well as many close friends.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the "Bob McKay Scholarship Fund" c/o Windsor Federal, P.O. Box 57, Granby, CT 06035.

Mabel Bernhardt Smith

Mabel A. Bernhardt Smith, 94, of South Street, Roxbury, widow of Sanford Smith, died Saturday, January 1st, at New Milford Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born May 25, 1905, in Roxbury, daughter of the late Rully M. Bernhardt and Rachel (Minor) Bernhardt. She was a teacher at Center School, Booth Free School, and later was principal at Booth Free. Her teaching career spanned 42 years, teaching many generations of Roxbury residents.

She was educated in Roxbury and graduated from the Danbury State Normal School. She received her teaching certificate from Danbury Teacher's College. She also was a reporter for a local newspaper.

She was a lifelong member and oldest member of The Shepaug Club and a member of the Roxbury Congregational Church. She enjoyed extensive travel across the United States and most recently attended the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall.

Mrs. Smith will be remembered for her knowledge, gentle spirit and philanthropy, which included the gifts of land for the Minor Memorial Library and the soon-to-be built Roxbury Senior Housing.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 4th, at 12:00 noon at the Roxbury Congregational Church. Burial will follow at The Roxbury Center Cemetery. The Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, Main Street South, Woodbury, is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions in Mrs. Smith's name may be made to the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department, Roxbury, CT 06783, or the Roxbury Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 94, Roxbury, CT 06783.

Caroline (Yoblonski) Murphy

Caroline Helen Murphy, 72, of 4 Howe Road, New Milford, wife of William J. Murphy Jr., died Sunday at New Milford Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in New Milford August 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Joseph and Caroline Campbell Yoblonski. She was a graduate of New Milford High School. She had been an avid bingo player and was well-known for her love of crafts and sewing.

In addition to her husband of 47 years, she is survived by five daughters, Christine Farrell, Patricia Malumphy and Maureen Block, all of New Milford, Colleen Murphy of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and Kathleen Murphy of Danbury. She was predeceased by a son, William J. Murphy III. She is also survived by three sisters, Margaret Polzun, Josephine Bryer and Dorothy Doyle, all of New Milford; two brothers, Walter Yoblonski of Sherman and John Yoblonski of New Milford; seven grandchildren, Lynda Arnold, Brenda Farrell, Mikaela and Julia Malumphy, John Gereg V, Michael and Keleigh Block; and two great-grandchildren, Cyrissa Mazurak and Amber Farrell, also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in the Colonial FuneralHome, 87 Park Lane Road, New Milford. Interment in Center Cemetery, New Milford.

Friends may call in the hour preceding the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Regional Hospice of Danbury, 30 West Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

Jane Chiaramonte

Jane M. Chiaramonte of Sherman died on Monday, January 3, 2000 after a long illness. Mrs. Chiaramonte was born on February 5, 1948 in New York City, daughter of Jane Coady Moffat and the late Mark L. Moffat.

After graduating from The Assisium Academy in Manhattan, she worked for The New Yorker Magazine and after moving to Sherman, for the Perkin-Elmer Corporation until her children were born. She was an active volunteer at the Sherman School for many years and in 1995 was honored to receive the first Volunteer of the Year Award. She was an active member of the Holy Trinity Church in Sherman.

Mrs. Chiaramonte is survived by Joseph, her husband of 30 years; a son, Michael; daughter, Alison; mother, Jane Moffat of North Salem, New York; sister, Christine Travelpiece and her husband, Wayne of Poughquag, New York; brother, Robert Moffat and his wife, MaryJude of Dover Plains, New York and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Matthew.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 5 at 11:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Church in Sherman. There are no calling hours. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Holy Trinity Youth Group of Sherman.

The New Fairfield Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Barbara Strelez

Margaret Barbara Strelez, 79, of 19 Prospect Place, New Milford, died Sunday at New Milford Hospital.

She was born in Bridgewater August 14, 1921, a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Kurtz) Strelez.

She was employed for many years at the Nestle Company, retiring after many years in 1986. She was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church, New Milford.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph J. Strelez of Litchfield; a sister, Anna S. Lynch of New Milford, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church with a Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment in St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.

Friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 40 North Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

Sophie DiGrazia

Sophie DiGrazia, 84, wife of the late Vincent J. DiGrazia, formerly of Hickory Hill Rd., Brookfield, died at the Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care on Monday, January 3, 2000.

She was born in Tyler, Pa., May 28, 1915, daughter of the late Anthony and Lena (Cucci) DeCondo. She had lived in Patterson, New Jersey for many years prior to moving to Brookfield approximately 27 years ago.

Mrs. DiGrazia is survived by two sons, Dr. Paul DiGrazia of Brookfield and Anthony DiGrazia of Simsbury; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield, on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Entombment will take place in St. Peter Mausoleum.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Joel P. Kannengeiser

Joel P. Kannengeiser, 55, of 36 Woodbury Hill, died Sunday, January 2 at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury.

Mr. Kannengeiser was born August 8, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, son of Muriel (McDermott) Kannengeiser of Long Island and the late John Kannengeiser. Mr. Kannengeiser was a retired teacher from the Weston Middle School. He was a volunteer with the Friends of the Woodbury Library and the Southbury Training School. He was a member of the CT Choral Society and the CT Choral Society Scholarship Fund.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his lifelong friend, Mario Mesi of Woodbury; two brothers, Paul Kannengeiser and his wife, Kathleen of Long Island and Kevin Kannengeiser and his wife, Teresa of California; nieces, Amanda, Kristen, Eileen, Karen and Jennafer; nephews, John and James.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, January 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church, Main St. South, Woodbury. Burial is private. Calling hours Tuesday and Wednesday, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, Main St. South. Memorial contributions may be made to the CT Choral Society Scholarship Fund, PO Box 42, Southbury, CT 06488 or to WMNR Fine Arts Radio, 1014 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT 06468.

Rosemary W. Chaillou

Rosemary W. Chaillou, 84, of Sherman, died December 30 at Loma Linda University Medical Center, after a brief illness. She had been visiting family at the time of her death. She was the widow of Pierre M. Chaillou. They had settled in Sherman in 1966.

She was born May 6, 1915 in New York City. Mrs. Chaillou was a member of Holy Trinity Church, where she was active in many of the church organizations.

She is survived by her five children; sons, Richard Chaillou of New Jersey, Bruce Chaillou of New Milford, Robert Chaillou of California and daughters, Rosemary DePaola of Yorktown Heights, N.Y. and Denise Carter of California. She is also survived by three sisters and a brother and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a Memorial Mass January 8th, 11:30 Saturday morning at Holy Trinity Church in Sherman. Father David J. Riley, former pastor of Holy Trinity Church, will officiate.

Donations in her name may be made to Holy Trinity Church, Rte 37-39, PO Box 97, Sherman, CT 06784 or your favorite charity.

Neil Blackwood III

Neil Blackwood III, age 75, died January 1, 2000 at Winter Haven Hospital, Florida. Born and raised in Oswego, N.Y., he fought during World War II with the US Army Infantry throughout France and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. On his return to the US, he studied at the State University of NY at Oswego, subsequently teaching Industrial Arts and coaching at Brewster High School in Brewster, N.Y. from 1947 to 1979.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Beal Blackwood, formerly of Brewster, N.Y. and more recently of Lake Wales, Fla., where they made their home. Also surviving is one son, Neil Blackwood IV and three grandchildren, Brittnee and Brett of Lakeland, Fla. and Neil, V of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Funeral services were held in Florida.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Hudson Valley Chapter, 785 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605.

Edith G. (Edwards) Doutney

Edith G. Edwards Doutney, 86, of Mountainville Ave., Danbury, died on January 2, 2000 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Warren F. Doutney.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. September 16, 1913, she was a daughter of Leonard and Jessie (Horton) Edwards.

Mrs. Doutney was employed as a Nurse's Aide for the Brookside Rest Home. She retired after numerous years of service.

Mrs. Doutney is survived by four daughters, Joye Ferris, Patricia Kuhne and Sharon Bongiorno, all of Danbury and Carolyn Granja of New Milford; two sisters, Jessie Patton of Danbury and Laura Estrada of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at the Green Funeral Home Wednesday morning at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to the time of the service.

Genevieve M. Kallas

Genevieve M. Kallas, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, 87, of Valley Stream Dr., Danbury, wife of the late Paul M. Kallas, died on Monday.

She was born in Danbury, January 26, 1912, daughter of the late Louis and Rose (DiMascola) Pannozza. She was a lifetimeDanbury resident, attended Danbury schools and had been a member of the daughters of Penelope. Mrs. Kallas had formerly owned and operated, with her late husband, the Brookside Rest Home in Danbury in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mrs. Kallas is survived by a son, Michael A. Kallas of Danbury; a daughter, Rosalie M. Kallas of Monroe; a sister, Mary P. Patella of Danbury; a brother, Rocco Pannozza of Bethel; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church on Thursday at a time to be announced. Burial will take place in St. Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Winifred B. Christian

Winifred B. Christian of Brewster, N.Y., died Monday, January 3, 2000 in Carmel, N.Y. She was 86.

She was born June 22, 1913 in New York, N.Y. to the late Michael and Mary (Walsh) Burns. She married Freeman Christian on May 12, 1937. He predeceased her on September 5, 1981.

Mrs. Christian has lived in Brewster, N.Y. for the past 60 years and worked for Readers Digest in Pleasantville, N.Y. for 10 years before retiring in 1979.

Mrs. Christian was also predeceased by her son, Eugene and a daughter, Barbara Shannon. She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Christian and Bettie Gademan of Brewster, N.Y.; three grandchildren, William Gademan of Daytona, Fla., Elizabeth Gademan of Brewster, N.Y. andRobert M. Shannon of Carmel, N.Y. and two great-grandchildren, Christopher Gademan of Brewster, N.Y. and Jeremy Shannon of Carmel, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence OToole Church. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence OToole Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave., Brewster, N.Y., Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Brewster Fire Department Ambulance Corp., North Main St., Brewster, N.Y. 10509.

Rosemary (Scozzafava) Lariccia

Rosemary (Scozzafava) Lariccia, of Clearbrook Road, Danbury, wife of John B. Lariccia, died at her home Tuesday morning with her family at her side. She was 73 years of age.

Born in Danbury October 8, 1926, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Rotunda Scozzafava, she attended St. Joseph's School, Danbury High School and was a lifelong Danbury resident.

She had been employed as the Cafeteria Manager at Shelter Rock School for 12 years and at Davis & Geck for 18 years, retiring in 1981.

Mr. and Mrs. Lariccia celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary last November.

Rosemary was a member of St. Peter Church and its Parish Life Committee, was a volunteer at St. Peter Church and Rectory and was active in Parish Activities. She also volunteered as a Receptionist at the Danbury Probate Court.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, John A. Lariccia and his wife, Janis of Newtown; James P. Lariccia and his wife, Deborah of New Milford; one daughter, Mary Ellen Cesca and her husband, Paul of Danbury; two brothers, Thomas Scozzafava Sr. of Danbury and Louis Scozzafava of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Michelle Lariccia, Gina Lariccia, Jennifer Cesca and her fianc'E9, Allen Light, Tamma Rosensteel, David Lattin and Matthew Cesca; two great-grandchildren, Anneka and Helaina Rosensteel and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held from the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Friday morning at 9:45 to St. Peter Church at 10:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be in the family plot in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00.
