Evelyn E. Bennitt

Evelyn E. Bennitt, age 80, of 185 Hanover Road, Newtown, died Jan. 14, 2000, at the New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph L. Bennitt.

She was born May 26, 1919, in New York City, a daughter of the late Paul & Julia (Elko) Grubbe.

Mrs. Bennitt was a graduate of Good Council College in White Plains, N.Y., and had worked as a fashion model prior to her marriage. A resident of Newtown for 53 years, she assisted her late husband as a draftsman in his surveying business. She was a communicant of St. Rose Church, Newtown.

She is survived by her son and best friend, Paul Bennitt of Newtown; four daughters, Donna Hofmann of Southbury, Mary Schenzer and Ellen Bennitt, both of New Milford, and Diane Weiner-Lacoursiere of Waterbury; two sisters, Pearl (Dolly) Garrow and Lillian Connor, both of Rutland, Vt.; six grandchildren, Jacquelyn Hofmann, Christine Gayot, Darryl Schenzer, Wayne Hofman, Ellen Fields and Amy Weiner. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Tracy Paist, Naomi Fields, Raymond Gayot, Dylan, Brandon, Kelly & Alison Hofmann, Alisha & Amara McCarthy; a great-great-grandchild, Alyssa Paist; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose Church, Church Hill Road, Newtown. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Newtown. There are no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to DATAHR, 135 Old State Road, Brookfield, CT 06804. Arrangements by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, CT.

Alice Sauer

Alice Sauer, 84, formerly of South Street, Roxbury, died Thursday at The Lutheran Home of Southbury. She was the widow of Martin Carl Sauer.

She was born April 6, 1916, in Salisbury, NH, daughter of the late Edmond and Laura (Stickley) Little. She attended local schools and graduated from the Elliot School of Nursing in Manchester, NH. She worked as an RN for many years, last working as a nurse at the Mediplex Convalescent Hospital in Danbury.

Mrs. Sauer was a hardworking volunteer in the community and spent most of her life volunteering in Danbury, where she and her husband raised their family. She was active with the Danbury First Congregational Church and the Red Cross RSVP programs.

She is survived by a son, Martin Sauer of Roxbury; a daughter, Jane Sauer of Somerville, MA; and three grandsons, Joel Sauer of Austin, Texas, Joshua Sauer of Portland, OR, and Justin Sauer of St. Mary's, GA.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Roxbury Congregational Church. The Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 2 School St., is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas M. Scallon

Thomas M. Scallon, 57, of Puritan Valley Road, Brookfield, died Friday evening at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Janice M. Scogna Scallon.

Mr. Scallon was born Aug. 31, 1942, in Chicago, IL, a son of the late Thomas M. and Helen Wylocki Scallon. He attended William & Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., and was a graduate of DePaul University, class of 1965, with a B.S. degree in psychology.

He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving for two years.

Before moving to Brookfield in 1985, Mr. Scallon had lived in Yorktown Heights, NY, and Skillman, NJ. He was employed as an IT specialist for International Business Machines for 30 years, last working at their offices in Southbury.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Thomas M. Scallon II and his wife, Kristen of Danbury; a daughter, Christine R. Scallon of Brookfield; two sisters, Kathleen A. Kelly of Elgin, IL and Verna J. Tamkin and her husband, Michael of Mount Prospect, IL; 6 nephews and 3 nieces.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury. Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield.

Harry Malowitz

Harry Malowitz of the Bronx, N.Y, born Aug. 25, 1919, passed away at age 80 on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.

Married for 58 years to his beloved Yettie, and survived by his much-loved daughter Maressa Gershowitz, his son-in-law Marc, and his adored granddaughters Elissa and Rebecca of Danbury, Conn., he is also survived by his brother Joe and sister-in-law Eleanor; his brother-in-law Ben, sister-in-law Rose, and many nieces and nephews.

A committed supporter of the labor movement, equal rights and justice, he will be missed by his many dear friends, including Roberta, Lou and Joe, Abe and Gert, Helen and Joe, Ruth, and their children and grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 17, at Hirsh and Sons, 167th St. and Jerome Avenue in The Bronx. Parking is available. For more information, call (718) 896-9000.

The family will sit Shiva at the home of Maressa and Marc Gershowitz, 8 Crest Road, Danbury, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Pauline Randall

Pauline Alves Randall, 62, wife of Donald Randall, quietly passed away in her sleep after a long illness on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the home of her sister Mary West of Danbury. She had been lovingly surrounded for weeks by her family and friends.

Born in Atlantic City, NJ, she grew up in Stratford, CT, and graduated from Stratford High School. She spent most of her married life in the New Milford area and was employed for 18 years by the Grolier Education Corporation, where she was very much a part of the "Grolier" family.

Pauline was a long-standing member of the Calvary Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bridgeport, CT, where she held several offices. She was also a longtime member of the Bridgewater Fireman's Auxiliary.

Besides her loving husband and sister, she is survived by a son, Darnell of Brookfield; two daughters, Toni Hays of Roxbury and Lori Roberson of Bridgeport; another sister, Delores Bell of Bridgeport; two brothers, Clayton Alves of Birmingham, AL, and Ralph Alves of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, and Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Calvary Seventh Day Adventist Church, 827 Trumbull Ave., Bridgeport. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Regional Hospice of Western CT, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810; or the Calvary Seventh Day Adventist Church Building or the Benevolent Fund, P.O. Box 1861, Bridgeport, CT 06604.

Charles Gorman Sr.

Charles Anthony Gorman, Sr., 92, of Apopka, Fla., and formerly of Danbury, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at Florida Hospital Altamonte. He was the husband of Mary (Wixted) Gorman.

Charlie was born in Bethel, CT, son of the late Anthony and Mary Margaret (McManus) Gorman. He was a well-known baseball player in his youth and was known as one of Bethel's finest athletes for his athletic achievements. In the 1920s, he was offered a professional contract by the New York Yankees, and in 1984, was honored by the Danbury Ol' Timers Athletic Association.

He was a sales associate for Murphy-Gorman Hat Company before becoming a Connecticut State Trooper. Charlie later became a Special Investigator for the State of Connecticut.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Charles "Tony" Gorman Jr. of Danbury, Robert William Gorman of Coral Springs, Fla., Richard Leo Gorman of Ostrander, Ohio, and Philip Thomas Gorman of Coconut Creek, Fla.; three daughters, Mary (Gorman) Kwas of New Milford, Susan (Gorman) Altenburg of Cassel Berry, Fla., and Joan (Gorman) Vincent of Apopka; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. from the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, to St. Peter Church, Danbury, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Meda F. Hoffman

Meda F. Hoffman, 84, of 27 Skyline Drive, Candlewood Shores, Brookfield and the wife of Charles Hoffman, a partner of the former Hoffman Poultry Farm of Brookfield, died January 15, 2000 at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Hoffman was born in Plant City, Florida, December 1, 1915, a daughter of the late John and Bethany Fuhrer, and had graduated from Florida State University with a degree in education and had begun a career as a teacher in St. Augustine and Panama City, Florida. Upon her marriage, she relocated to Connecticut, where she continued to be a substitute teacher in Brookfield and New Milford.

She had been a member and Past-President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #60 of Danbury and was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Brookfield, and the A.A.R.P., and Brookfield Senior Center.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Hoffman is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Beth Nanna, a teacher at Brookfield High School, Dr. John Nanna, a dentist in Brookfield; and her granddaughter, Lauren Nanna, a senior at Brookfield High School; and Mrs. Hoffman's brother, Carl Fuhrer of Ormand Beach, Florida.

A funeral will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Brookfield Center, on Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Paul's Memorial Garden.

Friends will be received at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury, on Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Memorial contributions to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Route #25, Brookfield Center, CT 06804, will be appreciated.

Carl Gonzales Jr.

Carl Gonzales Jr., 83, of 107 Simeon Road, Bethel, died January 16, 2000 at Danbury Hospital.

Born in Great Barrington, Mass. on July 27, 1916, he was a son of the late Carl and Anna (Ward) Gonzales Sr.

Mr. Gonzales was a US Army World War II Veteran. After his discharge from the Army, he traveled the entire United States, including Alaska, working from state to state. He was affectionately known by his friends as "The Knight of the Road".

Mr. Gonzales was employed in the landscape and garden industry. He retired after numerous years of service.

He is survived by a brother, Edward Gonzales of Bethel; two sisters, Jeanette Sivo of Brookfield and Caroline Barrett of Newtown; his longtime companion, Cybil Hanson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Interment of Mr. Gonzales' Cremains will take place in the Veterans Section of the Bethel Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 p.m. to the time of the service.

Anna Krizan

Anna Krizan, age 85, of Highland Ave., Danbury, died at the Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care on Sunday.

Miss Krizan was born December 3, 1914 in Danbury, a daughter of the late John and Anna Simek Krizan. She was a lifelong resident of Danbury and was employed by Risdon Corporation, Danbury for many years. Miss Krizan was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Danbury, the church Ladies Aide Society. She was also a member of the United Lutheran Society, Lodge #145. Miss Krizan was an avid quilt maker.

Miss Krizan is survived by six brothers, Stephen Krizan and his wife, Anna, Danbury, Martin and his wife, Catherine, Bethel. George and his wife, Marlene, Danbury, Samuel and his wife, Marie, Danbury, Emil and his wife, Carol, Monroe, Daniel and his wife, Nancy, Daytona Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Elizabeth Krizan, Danbury, Susan Henderson and her husband, Robert, Thomaston, Christine Musgrave, Port Orange, Fla., Paula Scozzafava and her husband, John; a sister-in-law, Vivian Krizan, Danbury; two cousins, Elizabeth LaBore, Fairfield and Susan Lewis, Hamden and several nieces and nephews. Miss Krizan is predeceased by Paul Krizan and John Krizan (killed in World War II).

Funeral services will be held in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Danbury, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Danbury. Family will receive friends in the Hull Home, Sixty Division Street, Danbury, Tuesday afternoon from 2 until 4 and in the evening from 7 until 9 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 44 Spring Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

Sarita B. Shulman

Sarita B. (Lerman) Shulman, age 86, of Lauderhill, Fla., died on Sunday at her daughter's home in Peabody, Mass., following a brief illness.

She was born in Portland, Maine and was the daughter of the late Gimpel and Ethel (Gorfinkel) Lerman.

She graduated Portland High School and had lived all her life in Portland, Maine before moving to Florida 10 years ago.

She was an Executive Secretary to the president of the former Federal Savings Bank in Portland, Maine for 18 years.

She was a member of Hadassah, the Jewish Home for the Aged, and the Sisterhood of Cong. Shaarey Tephiloh all in Portland.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, David Shulman, two daughters and sons-in-law, Ethel Marcy and Gene Weiner of Danbury, Carol and Michael Sapol of Peabody, Mass and she was the mother of the late Donald A. Shulman. She also leaves four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Dr. Dawn Weiner. Merril Weiner, Daniel and Robert Murch, Rebecca Liss, Aaron Weiner and Nathan Murch. She was the sister of the late Beatrice Tolin, Meyer, Frank, Samuel, Sidney and Harry Lerman.

Services will be held on Tuesday at 12:00 noon in Cong. Shaarey Tephiloh, 76 Noyes St., Portland, Maine.

Burial will be in the Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Portland, Maine.

Memorial week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sapol, 89 Lake St., Peabody, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be donated to the American Cancer Society, 66-Y Concord St., Wilmington, MA 01887 or to the American Diabetes Association, 40 Spleen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
