John Peter Quinn

John Peter Quinn, 61, of Rita Dr., New Fairfield, died at his home on Monday, July 10, 2000. He was the husband of Bernadette (Kenney) Quinn.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on October 27, 1938, he was a son of the late Thomas and Rita (Nolan) Quinn. Mr. Quinn was employed by Rock Ridge Country Club of Newtown up until his illness.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his 3 sons and their wives, John Peter and Deborah Quinn Jr. of Brookfield, Paul and Susan Quinn of Germantown, Ohio, and Kevin and Tricia Quinn of New Fairfield; 3 brothers, Thomas Quinn of Great River, N.Y., Robert Quinn of Edison, N.J., and Michael Quinn of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Cassidy Quinn; and a grandson, Jacob Quinn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward Church, New Fairfield, Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m.

Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Friends are asked to please omit flowers. Contributions in Mr. Quinn's memory may be made to Regional Hospice, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810 or Nursing Sisters Of The Sick and Poor, 984 North Village Ave., Rockville Centre, NY 11570.

Robert B. Trumbull

Robert B. Trumbull, 52, of 9 Powder Horn Dr., Ridgefield, died Friday evening at Danbury Hospital unexpectedly. He was the husband of Patricia Case Trumbull.

Mr. Trumbull was born in Torrington on July 11, 1947, a son of Jane Hubbard Trumbull of New Hartford, Conn., and the late George R. Trumbull. He was a 1969 graduate of Union College where he received a BS in Physics. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1971.

Mr. Trumbull's broad career in marketing included brand management and strategic marketing. At the time of his death, he was with Dynamic Marketing, which he founded in 1998. He was previously with Wagner, Stott & Mercator in New York City, the Demeter Group in Connecticut and Richardson-Vicks of Wilton, where he traveled on numerous assignments including three years in Japan.

A Ridgefield resident since 1977, he was previously of New Jersey and North Carolina. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield. Mr. Trumbull was active with the Wilton YMCA where he had various board assignments including past treasurer.

He was an avid swimmer, tennis player and golfer. He was tremendously family orientated and active in his children's athletic and extracurricular activities.

Besides his wife and mother, survivors include one son, Benjamin C. of Cupertino, Calif.; one daughter, Elizabeth C. of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, George and Peter of West Simsbury and John of New Hartford.

Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield, 103 Main St., Ridgefield. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.

There are no calling hours.

Elizabeth P. Whitlock

The death of Elizabeth P. Whitlock, 86, formerly of Summit Drive, New Milford, occurred Monday evening at Rose Haven, Litchfield, CT.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, January 10, 1914, daughter of the late Earl H. and Grace Frazier Payne, she came to Danbury as a young woman and was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1932. She later attended the New York School of Display in New York City, graduating in 1938. Her last 20 years were spent in New Milford.

She had been employed by the former McRory's Stores for 40 years, as a Window Trimmer for 20 years and as a Cash Auditor for 20 additional years.

Mrs. Whitlock was a member of the Congregational Church of New Milford, Roger Sherman Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Stellar Chapter #55 Order of Eastern Star of Danbury, the Metichewan and Pomona Granges, American Association of Retired Persons and the Senior Citizens of New Milford.

She is survived by a cousin, Ann Dukes Hungerford of Sebastian, Florida.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield, Thursday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. Michael J. Moran, Pastor of the Congregational Church of New Milford, officiating.

Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington, Vermont.

Friends may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home, Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00.

James Samaha

James Samaha, 83, of 10 Liberty Street, Danbury, husband of the late Jessica (Preston) Samaha, died on Monday, July 10, 2000, at the Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Samaha was born in Lawrence, Mass., October 20, 1916, a son of the late Michael and Mazza (Samaha) Samaha.

He attended Lawrence schools and moved to Danbury with his family in 1929.

A World War II US Army veteran, Mr. Samaha served with the 2126th Army Air Force Base Unit. He served from May 12, 1942 until January 8, 1946 and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon.

Mr. Samaha was retired from Avco-Lycoming of Stratford in 1994 after 42 years of employment. During the last 40 years, Mr. Samaha served as the union steward at Avco-Lycoming.

Active in sports, he had been one time or another, a player, coach, manager, referee, promoter or league official.

Always athletically inclined, he was considered a fine pitcher and had played for the former Danbury Warriors and the Acme Furriers in the Danbury Semi-Pro League. He was a manager and coach with the Danbury Boy's Club and earned a fine reputation as a court mastermind. In fact, his players and associates often referred him to as "Professor" Samaha.

In 1933, Mr. Samaha had the distinct honor of being chosen as the first vice-president of the CT State Junior Basketball League. After several fine seasons with the Boy's Club, he took over as manager of the Danbury Catholic Club Cyclones. Old timers may remember this club as one of the powers in state basketball circles.

In 1937, they were acclaimed as the state professional champions. Mr. Samaha was instrumental in the Cyclones rise and promoted games with teams such as the House of David, the Meriden Endees and the famous Kate Smith Celtics. One of Mr. Samaha's biggest thrills came when his team defeated the highly favored Celtics 35 to 33, in a never-to-be-forgotten thriller.

A top notch referee and at the age of 24 was one of the youngest officials ever appointed in the state.

While in the US Army Air Force, Sergeant Samaha was appointed assistant to the Post Athletic Director at the Newport Army Air Field. Sgt. Samaha coached and managed several championship basketball and baseball teams while in the service.

Upon discharge from the US Army, former Danbury First Selectman Joseph Sauer appointed Mr. Samaha as a welfare investigator. He maintained this position until 1952 when he joined Avco-Lycoming. He also owned and operated a real estate agency in Danbury during the early years.

The Old Timers' Athletic Association of Greater Danbury honored Mr. Samaha at their annual awards dinner on September 29, 1988.

He was a member of the Lebanon-American Club of Danbury and had served as a past president, a member of the Joseph A. Treadwell Post American Legion of Danbury, The Old Timers' Athletic Association of Greater Danbury and of St. Anthony's Maronite Church.

He is survived by four daughters, Judith A. Samaha of Meriden, Patricia Schulze of Danbury, Jimmetta Samaha and her husband Joseph Walkovich of Danbury and Pamela Samaha and her husband Eric Gustavson of Brookfield; three brothers, Joseph Samaha and Maurice Samaha, both of Danbury and Mitchell Samaha of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, William and Kimberley Schulze and James and Nicholas Gustavson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Jessica Samaha, who died on April 29th of this year as well as being predeceased by two brothers, George Samaha and William Samaha.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Maronite Church, 17 Granville Avenue, Danbury.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury with full military honors.

Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Memorials in Mr. Samaha's memory may be made to the Danbury Hospital Development Fund for Oncology, 24 Hospital Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810 in appreciation of the care, kindness, concern and love shown to him and his family by the Oncology Nursing Staff (8-East) at the Danbury Hospital.

Matilda Socci

Matilda Socci, 94, of 88 Forest St., New Canaan, Ct., died Monday, July 10, 2000 at home following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph Socci, and had been a resident of New Canaan for the past 63 years.

Born in Sette Frate, Italy on May 23, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Catherine Buzzeo Sillo. Mrs. Socci was a communicant of St. Aloysius R.C. Church in New Canaan and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of St. Aloysius Church.

Mrs. Socci is survived by one son, Vincent Socci of New Canaan; two daughters, Mary Butkowsky of Fairfield, Ct. and Ft. Pierce, Florida and Maryann Meyer of Ridgefield, Ct.; six sisters, Anna Marazza of Montreal, Canada, Alesandra Tamburro of Downsview, Canada, Antoinette Fanone of Toronto, Canada, Guiseppa Socci and Donata Palladino, both of Sette Frate, Italy and Giovanna Policella of Stamford, Ct. Eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Aloysius R.C. Church in New Canaan, followed by interment in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan. Friends may call at the F. Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, Ct. on Thursday, July 13, 2000 from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Mrs. Socci's name may be made to the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, South Ave., New Canaan, Ct. or to the charity of one's choice.

Irene (Bouclis) Economou

Irene (Bouclis) Economou, 89, of 642 Danbury Rd., Ridgefield, formerly of Danbury, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at the Laurelwood Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Lazarus "Leo" Economou.

Born in New York City on August 28, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Spiro and Aglaia (Stamatopoulos) Bouclis. She attended schools in Ansonia and worked in the Print Department of the Data Control Company of Danbury for many years.

She was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and a member of one of the founding families; as well as a member of the Ladies Philoptokos Society and Daughters of Penelope.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Basil and Maria Economou of New Milford; and granddaughters, Jennifer Economou of Danbury and Caryn Hasseltine of New Fairfield; and her brother, Kimon Gregory of Millers Falls, MA and predeceased by her brothers, Demo and Arthur Bouclis.

Funeral services will be held at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Trisagon service will be held at 7 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, 443 Franklin Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114.

Daniel O'Leary

Daniel O'Leary, 54, of 15 Possum Dr., New Fairfield, died surrounded by love on July 11 at Danbury Hospital after complications from lung disease.

Born in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Daniel and Helena O'Leary. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and Manhattan College in New York City. He was a resident of New Fairfield since 1976.

He was the husband of Kathleen Carr O'Leary, his bride of 32 years, and the proud father of Daniel W. of New Fairfield and Kevin of New York City.

He is also survived by his dear sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Kenneth Marshall of Franklin Lakes, NJ; his in-laws, William and Eileen Carr of Bonita Springs, Fla. and Thomas Carr of Dumont, NJ In addition, he will be missed by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He retired as a Deputy Superintendent of the New York City Transit Authority and for several years volunteered for the Interfaith AIDS Ministry Food Bank.

Friends may call Thursday, July 13 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Church, New Fairfield with a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m.

Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield.

Dan was a good man who tried to make things better.

Larry B. Callands

The death of Larry B. Callands, 56, of Park Avenue, Danbury, occurred at the Danbury Hospital Tuesday.

He was born in Gretna, Virginia, March 3, 1944, son of the late William and Lucille Lane Callands, attended Virginia schools and was a graduate of high school.

Mr. Callands had been employed as a Custodian at Western Connecticut State University for 23 years.

He was a member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Surviving are his 9 children, Faith King, Paige Jackson and Shawn Osbey, all of Danbury, Terry Callands of Norwalk, Connie Callands, Theresa Callands and Donell Callands, all of Waterbury, D'Quill Osbey and Hirsahi Osbey, both of Naugatuck, Conn.; his former wife, Margaret L. Osbey of Danbury; 5 brothers, Theodore R. Callands of Detroit, Mich., Richard L. and Thelbert M. Callands of Springfield, Mass., David R. and Orlando Callands of Danbury; 1 sister, Shirley, W. Harris of Danbury; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Johnny W. Callands and 2 sisters, Verna Mae James and Delma Elizabeth Watson.

Funeral services will be held at St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, 45 William St., Danbury, Friday afternoon at 1:00.

Interment will be in Wooster Cemetery.

Friends may call at St. James Church Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., is in charge of arrangements.
