Mary M. Hourin

The death of Mary M. Hourin, 74, of Sleepy Hollow Drive, Danbury, wife of Douglas N. Hourin, occurred Sunday at the Danbury Hospital.

Born in Danielson, Conn., July 28, 1925, daughter of the late John and Victoria Trahan Egan, she attended Danielson schools.

Mrs. Hourin lived in Wilton, Conn. for 10 years prior to moving to Danbury 37 years ago. She and Mr. Hourin would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this coming September.

She had been employed at the Risdon Manufacturing Co. as a machine operator for 23 years retiring July 10, 1987.

She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by four children, Sandra Taylor of Phoenix, Ariz., Sheila Petrone of Elkridge, Md., Emile Barriere of Banbrook, Texas and Ruth Mulken of Weymouth, Mass.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Thursday morning at 10:45 to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11:30.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel.

Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 9:00.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church, Project 2000, 12 Cottage St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Joenether Fair Hasben

Joenether Fair Hasben, a resident of Danbury for 17 years and former resident of Stamford for 40 years, died Sunday, July 23, 2000 at Danbury Hospital at the age of 84. She was born in Orangeburg, S.C., April 18, 1916 to the late Maggie Dash and George Fair I. She was the widow of Willie Ray Hasben.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Hasben Lambert of Danbury; one son-in-law, James Louis Lambert, also of Danbury; one sister, Annie Bell Fair Milleo of Orangeburg, S.C.; Marie Fair Shular of Bridgeport; one granddaughter, Tamara Hasben Gorden of Port Chester, N.Y. and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Willie Lloyd Hasben and three brothers, Charlie Fair, George Fair II and Henry Fair.

There will be no calling hours. A private service will be held Wednesday July 26, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Downer Funeral Home, Inc., 31 Stillwater Avenue, Stamford, Ct. Burial will be private.

Adolf G. Carlson

Adolf G. Carlson, 69, of Brookfield, husband of Pauline (Schnitzke) Carlson, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Bethel Healthcare Center. A New Britain native and longtime resident, he was the son of the late Adolf and Edith (Olson) Carlson and moved to Brookfield in 1990. A graduate of New Britain High School in 1948 and Bentley College in Boston, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict.

Adolf was involved in the Republican Party for many years and served as State Finance Commissioner under Gov. Thomas Meskill. He served on the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees; the Board of Directors of American Savings Bank; the Board of Directors of Mooreland Hill School; the Board of the Lutheran Home in Southbury; and served as Chairman of the Board of Lutheran Social Services. He operated an insurance business started by his father, the Adolf Carlson Agency in New Britain until 1992. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in New Britain, the Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, and since his move to Candlewood Lake, has become a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brookfield. He enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren, golf, platform tennis, travel and playing bridge with his friends.

Besides his wife of 49 years, he leaves two sons, Jeffrey Carlson and his wife, Mary, of Vernon and Roger Carlson and his wife, Judy, of Redondo Beach, California; a brother, Dr. Alden Carlson of Cortland, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Jacobson of Wethersfield; two grandchildren, Suzanne and John Carlson, both of Vernon; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Clifton Carlson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 77 Franklin Square, New Britain. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Rt. 133 at Junction Rd., Brookfield, 06804 or to the American Cancer Society, 2024 East Main St., Waterbury, 06708. The Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Sq., New Britain, is in charge of arrangements.

William M. Stephens

William M. Stephens, age 84, formerly of Fairfield, beloved husband of Tyla Cochran Stephens, died July 22, 2000 in Sarasota, Florida. Born in Ulysses, Nebraska, Mr. Stephens was a longtime resident of Fairfield before a recent move to Sarasota. He graduated from Ulysses High School, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Northwestern University. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the Air Force, and was appointed a leading pilot with the 312th Bombardment Group, known as the "Roarin 20's," an A-20 bomber unit of the fifth Air Force in the Philippines.

He retired from Thomas A. Schutz Company of Morton Grove, Illinois, in 1984 as a vice president responsible for opening their Eastern office in Westport in 1970. Mr. Stephens was a longtime member of Black Rock Yacht Club, having served as Commodore in 1987, and was a former member of Brooklawn Country Club. He enjoyed tennis and golf and had a passion for flying.

In addition to his devoted wife, he is survived by his six children and their spouses, Martha and Thomas Thill of Trenton, New Jersey; Karen and Paul Keglevic of Agoura Hills, Ca.; Mary and Kenneth Musante, also Randall and Janet Stephens, all of Bethel; Debbie and James Grosso of Fairfield; Gary Stephens and John McCann of Boston, Ma.; eleven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. directly at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, 1045 Old Academy Road, Fairfield. A committal service with full military honors will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport. Calling hours have been omitted. Arrangements have been entrusted to the LESKO FUNERAL HOME, 1209 Post Road in Fairfield Center. James Leslie Ross Jr.

James Leslie Ross Jr., age 67, of Sawyer Hill Rd., New Milford, died Monday at Danbury Hospital after a three year struggle with Lymphoma. He is the husband of Nancy Jane Ross.

Mr. Ross was born July 3, 1933 in Clinton, Ohio, a son of the late James L. and Margaret Walker Ross. He was an area resident for 30 years. Mr. Ross enjoyed a lifelong career in the Aerospace Industry, retiring in 1994 after 11 years of service with the former Loral Electronics Corporation, Yonkers, New York. He was a longtime member of the Lake Waramaug Country Club and former Director of the Golf Committee. Mr. Ross was a loving husband and devoted father, he will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Ross is survived by four sons, James L. Ross III and his wife, Sherri, New Milford, CT; Randy Ross and his wife Donna, Brookline, NH; Ronald Ross and his wife Laura, New Milford, CT and Jeffrey Ross and his wife Lisa, Glenwood, MD; two daughters, Kathryn Bice and her husband Michael, Bryan, TX and Connie Earl and her husband Richard, Palatine, IL; a brother, Michael Ross, Clinton, OH; a sister, Barbara Cathey, Ft. McCoy, FL; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon July 29, 2000 at 3 o'clock in the First Congregational Church, New Milford, CT.

Memorials may be made to the: Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, 8800 Venice Blvd., Suite 207, Los Angeles, CA 90034, the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 or to the charity of one's choice.

Dora M. Hourin

John P. Di Leo Sr.

The death of John P. Di Leo Sr., of Surrey Drive, Brookfield, husband of Loretta Di Giacomo Di Leo, occurred at the Danbury Hospital on Tuesday. He was 61 years of age.

Born in New York City, N.Y., March 23, 1931, son of the late Paul and Cologera Preconte Di Leo, he attended New York Schools and Farmingdale Agricultural College. Before moving to Brookfield 23 years ago, he made his home in Bellmore, L.I., N.Y.

Mr. Di Leo had been employed as a Telecommunications Analyst for Union Carbide for 42 years retiring in 1993.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield and was an artist as a hobby. He specialized in oil painting, Water Colors and Acrylics which he shared with his family and friends.

Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Paul J. Di Leo and his wife Gail of Hamden, Conn., John P. Di Leo Jr. and his wife Elise of Southbury, Conn.; a daughter, Laura Courtney and her husband Paul of Dublin, Calif.; a brother, Joseph Di Leo of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 7 grandchildren, Vincent, Paul Jr., Katie, John 3rd and Matthew Di Leo, Michelle and Samantha Courtney; as well as 5 nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield, Friday morning at 10:00.

Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.

Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, Thursday from 2 to 5:00 and from 7 to 9:00.

Brian Lee Johnson

Brian Lee Johnson, 19, of 155 Candlewood Lake Road N., New Milford, Ct., died Monday, July 24, at Hartford Hospital, following an automobile accident on July 3. He was the son of Cheryl M. (Grossenbacher) Johnson of New Milford and LeRoy E. Johnson Jr. of New Milford.

Mr. Johnson was born November 9, 1980 in New Milford, Ct. He graduated from New Milford High School, Class of 1998 and attended Western Connecticut State College. He underwent a Heart Transplant on July 18, 1999.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson leaves a brother, Scott Johnson of New Milford; a sister, April Johnson of Hunter, New York; his maternal grandmother, Anna Grossenbacher of Brookfield; his maternal grandfather, Paul Grossenbacher and wife, Eleanor of Margate, Florida; and his paternal grandmother, Jeanne Johnson of Auburndale, Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Church on Friday, July 28 at 10 a.m. Interment at Center Cemetery, New Milford. Friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford on Thursday, July 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary Lazzari

Mary Lazzari, age 83, wife of the late Angelo Lazzari of Nunnawauk Meadows, Newtown, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 23, 2000 in the Danbury Hospital.

She was born in Queens, New York, August 8, 1916, daughter of the late Henry and Mariana (Lupo) Tortora. For many years Mrs. Lazzari was the proprietor of a delicatessen in Queens, New York. She has been a resident of Newtown since 1982. She was active in the Nunnawauk Senior Center.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Rita MacMillan of Newtown and 2 grandchildren, Gordon MacMillan of Manchester and Susan Williams of Litchfield, also 4 great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held Thursday at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.

There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Newtown Ambulance Assn., PO Box 344, Newtown, CT 06470.

Charles S. Gillotti

Charles S. Gillotti, 81, of Mesa, AZ, died Friday, July 21, 2000. Mr. Gillotti was a construction salesman and was a member of the DAV. Born in Danbury, CT, he graduated from Danbury High School and moved to Arizona in 1971.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gladys E.; children, Dashielle Kundrat-Foley of Chandler, C. Daniel of Chandler, Gary J. of Massachusetts, Patrice of New Jersey, Charlene Ives of Maryland, Richard P. of New York, Christine of Mesa, Thomas A. and Lisa of Washington; sister, Mrs. Eva Prenzi of California; 17 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services and Burial will be in Arizona. Lakeshore Mortuary (480) 838-5639.

John P. Di Leo Sr.

Justin H. Sands

Justin Hubbard Sands, formerly of Danbury, Connecticut, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000 in Houston, Texas at the age of 91.

Mr. Sands was born in Danbury, CT on June 21, 1909, a son of the late George Guthrie Sands and Elsie Morgan Sands. He was a graduate of Danbury High School where he was the recipient of the Wiechert Memorial Award for the Class of 1927. He graduated from the Parson's School of Design in New York City and was employed by the U.S. Playing Card Company in New York as an Art Director and artist for his entire career. Mr. Sands served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II where he was stationed in France. Mr. Sands lived in New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio until his retirement. He then moved to Houston, Texas where he resided until his death.

Mr. Sands was a direct descendant of the Taylor family, one of the original families who settled Danbury in 1685. He was also a direct descendant of the Sands family, original settlers of Block Island and Sands Point, Long Island, NY. A sister, Xe Marie Sands Davis and two brothers, F. Guthrie Sands and G. Donald Sands preceded him in death.

He is survived by a niece, Janet Sands Coury of Danbury, CT and two nephews, Hubert A. Davis of Danbury, CT and Jerrold H. Davis of Deland, FL; many great nieces, nephews; great great nieces and nephews; and two great great great nieces.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at the Sands family plot, Section 15, in Wooster Cemetery on Saturday, July 29, 2000 at 10:00 a.m.
