Florence A. DeAngelis

Florence A. DeAngelis, of 37 Route 39, New Fairfield, died on Wednesday afternoon, July 26, 2000 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Rocco L. DeAngelis.

Mrs. DeAngelis was born in New York City on October 11, 1915, a daughter of the late Clare Collins-Eaton and Edward Eaton.

She leaves behind one daughter, Patti Knapp of New Fairfield; two sons, Allyn DeAngelis of New Jersey and Peter DeAngelis of Meriden; 7 grandchildren, Marlana Wagner of New Fairfield, Debra Mandelbaum, David and Troy DeAngelis, Jennifer VanNess, Anthony and Michelle DeAngelis, all of New Jersey and 3 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 sisters and a brother.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. DeAngelis' name may be made to the New Fairfield Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Department, 4 Brush Hill Road, New Fairfield, CT 06812.

Friends will be received Monday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury.

A Funeral Service will conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead. A private burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Greenburgh, New York.

Alvin R. Tresselt

Alvin R. Tresselt, award-winning author and editor of books for children, died on July 24, 2000, at his home in Burlington, Vermont, surrounded by loving family, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Tresselt was born in Passaic, New Jersey, on September 30, 1916. Later, he lived in New York City and worked in several design firms and department stores, including B. Altman's, where he was involved in display and copywriting.

Encouraged by his close friend, Margaret Wise Brown, he began his career as an author in the early 1940s.

His books received numerous awards and honors, including the Caldecott Medal of Honor for one of his earliest books, White SnowBright Snow. An earlier book, Rain Drop Splash, and a later book, Hide and Seek Fog, were runners up for this award.

In all, over 60 of his books were published, and many were translated into up to a dozen or more languages. Various of his stories were developed into film strips and audio productions, and his retold Bible stories, read by Arlene Francis, were recorded on a national label.

In addition to his writing career, Mr. Tresselt was the first editor of Humpty Dumpty'sMagazine. Later, he became vice president of Parent's Magazine Press and editor-in-chief of all of its children's publications, books, and magazines for children.

He took great pleasure in developing and debuting new writers as well as working with numerous established and noted writers and illustrators.

He was a member of the Authors' Guild Inc. of the Authors' League of America and served a term as chairman of that group's Juvenile Committee and on the Council. He was also a member of the Children's Book Publishers' Council.

In addition, Mr. Tresselt spoke to numerous groups of educators, parents, and children, and taught juvenile writing in the Jesse Stuart summer workshops at Murray State University in Kentucky. He also was affiliated with the Institute of Children's Literature.

A gentle, thoughtful, loving man, Alvin Tresselt's passions were his family, architecture, music, and organic gardening.

He and his wife, Blossom Budney Tresselt, lived for 37 years in their much-loved pre-Revolutionary War home on Dorethy Road in West Redding, Connecticut, were he spent many happy hours in his extensive vegetable and flower gardens. Over the years, he was involved in various local groups, including the Redding Players and the Redding Choral Society, and was instrumental in promoting construction of the John Read Middle School. His last years were spent in a renovated carriage house in Burlington, Vermont.

He is survived by his wife of Burlington; two daughters, Ellen Victoria Tresselt of Danbury, Connecticut, and India Rachel Tresselt of Westford, Vermont; and by two grandsons, Loren and Connor; and a loving son-in-law, Andrew Beecher Fulton, all of Westford.

He was predeceased by his two sisters, Bess Eisenhauer of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Elsa Hall O'Shaughnessy of Rutherford, New Jersey.

Burial was private. Plans for a memorial service are not yet completed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Land Trust and/or the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 25 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05466.

Dorothy Haight Glover

Dorothy Haight Glover, age 94, of Main Street, Newtown, CT, wife of the late Walter L. Glover, a former Newtown Selectman and first Fire Marshall of Newtown, died at Bethel Health Care, Bethel, on July 27, 2000.

She was born in Nutley, New Jersey, January 9, 1906, the only daughter of the late Ernest V. and C. May (Hoyt) Haight of Ridgefield, CT. She was predeceased by 3 brothers, Alden, Edward and Ernest Haight Jr.

Moving to the Haight family home in Ridgefield, she graduated from Ridgefield High School. Upon her marriage in 1926, she moved to the Glover homestead, Glover Avenue, Newtown.

Mrs. Glover became a member of Trinity Church, Newtown. In the late 1940s she was employed as a telephone operator by SNET at their Newtown office at 40 Main St. She was a professional in the role she knew best, that of a wife, mother, nanny and caregiver to her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan G. Crick and son-in-law, James W. Crick Jr. of 7 Glover Ave., Newtown; a son, Lee W. Glover Sr. and daughter-in-law, Patricia Glover of Heritage Village, Southbury; one granddaughter, Maureen Crick Owen of Newtown; four grandsons, James Crick 3rd of Hilton Head, S.C., Michael Crick of Waterbury, CT, Lee W. Glover Jr. of Newtown, and Charles Glover of Grand Ronde, Oregon; a step-daughter, Susan Carlson of Macon, GA; and two step-grandsons, Marc and Timothy Ennis of St. Louis, Mo. Also, nine great-grandchildren, James Crick 4th; Emily Jane Crick; Matthew, William, Benjamin, Mitchell and Adam Crick, Nicole and Jacob Glover. A sister-in-law, Ruth Haight of Upton, MA, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday Aug. 1, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, with the Rev. Nancy Gossling officiating. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery.

As a celebration of her life, friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to either the Newtown Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 344, Newtown, CT 06470, or to Newtown Hook & Ladder Co., P.O. Box 3911, Newtown, CT 06470.

Russell R. Rochon

Russell R. Rochon, age 82, of 220 Dogwood Lane, Candlewood Park, Danbury, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret (Ivers) Rochon.

Born July 17, 1918, in Quebec City, Canada, he was a son of the late Zepherine and Maude (Baker) Rochon. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Rochon was a federal employee at the Brooklyn Naval Ship Yard, retiring after many years of service. Following his retirement, Mr. Rochon moved to Danbury.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Margaret Walsh of Danbury; a sister, Lillian Striano of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Margaret Ellen and Michael and his wife Alison. He was predeceased by two sisters, Iris and Myrtle.

A Gathering of Relatives and Friends will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4.

Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Friends are asked to please omit flowers. Contributions in Mr. Rochon's memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108.

Sylvia E. Hahn

Sylvia E. Hahn, 76 of Lewisburg, PA, died on July 27, 2000.

She was born April 8, 1924 in Kent CT, a daughter of the late Walter D. and Sarah L. (Jennings) Conn. She was married for 55 years to William A. Hahn.

Sylvia was a 1941 graduate of New Milford High School and in 1945 received a degree in education from Danbury Teacher's College.

Mrs. Hahn was employed as an elementary teacher in Danbury, Canton and Simsbury, CT. She was also a substitute teacher in Darien, CT.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey W. and Julia Hahn of Spencerport, NY and David W. and Meriam Hahn of Lewisburg, PA; four grandchildren; one great grandson; three brothers, Walter J. Conn of New Milford, Harvey E. Conn of Cincinnati and Kenneth W. Conn of New Preston; and two sisters, Ruby Holloway of New Milford and Hazel Spedding of Edgewater, FL.

A memorial service Wednesday at, 3:30 PM at St. John's Episcopal Church, New Milford, with the Rev. Richard Crew officiating. A gathering for family and friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Mary Gagon

Mary (Modugno) Gagon, 84, of 62-B Pelham Lane, Ridgefield formerly of Middle River Road, Danbury, wife of the late Joseph W. Gagon, died on Saturday morning, July 29, 2000, at the Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Gagon was born in Bari, Italy, December 16, 1915, a daughter of the late Felix and Rose (Garutti) Modugno.

She immigrated to this country in 1916 first settling in Stamford. She attended Stamford schools.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past thirteen months coming from Danbury, she had previously resided in Stamford.

She attended St. Mary's Church of Ridgefield and St. Joseph's Church of Danbury.

Her twin daughters survive her, Mary Ann (Mrs. Joseph) Sheehy of Ridgefield and Eileen (Mrs. William) Foley of Danbury; three sisters, Lee Skidd of Ridgefield, Irene Starr of Brookfield and Carmella Petrone of Stamford and a grandson, Gareth Foley of Danbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield

Friends will be received in the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in Mrs. Gagon's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.

Tillie (Koziar) Van Bezooijen

Tillie (Koziar) Van Bezooijen, 86, of 13 Park Lawn Drive, Bethel, and wife of the late William Van Bezooijen died Saturday morning, July 29, 2000 at her residence.

Mrs. Van Bezooijen was born in Danbury, September 1, 1913, a daughter of the late Kiprian and Anna (Warchat) Koziar.

She attended Danbury schools, was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church of Danbury.

Eight nieces, Dorothy Grana, Irene Hanna, Ann Myerholz, Catherine Patella, Phyllis Bieber, Joan Durkin, Rita Koziar and Sally Koziar, three nephews, Stephen Dratch, Theodore Dratch and Louis Koziar as well as grandnieces and grandnephew survive her.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. from the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury to the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, 17 Roberts Avenue, Danbury for the Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Luke Mihlay officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Platon's Cemetery, Danbury.

Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials in Mrs. Van Bezooijen's memory may be made to the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Building Fund, 74 Joe's Hill Road, Danbury, CT 06810.

Angelina M. Matias

Angelina M. Matias, 78, of Danbury, died at her home on Saturday, July 29, 2000. She was the wife of Manuel C. Matias.

Born in Azores, Portugal, on July 16, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Antonio and Carolina (Cordeiro) Medeiros.

Mrs. Matias was very active and one of the founding members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Mrs. Matias had a very special place in her heart for the hungry and needy children of the world.

Besides her husband she is survived by her four children and their spouses; Jose and Grace Matias of Brookfield, Maria Fatima and John Carreiro of Brookfield, Manuel and Ana Matias of Bethel, Juliet and Ervin Wilkins of Danbury. A brother Jose Medeiros of Danbury. Eight grandchildren and a great grandson and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Monday at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.
