Alice Dardia

Alice Dardia, 84, formerly of Waterbury, died Sunday at Mediplex of Danbury.

Mrs. Dardia was married to the late Harry Dardia.

She was born in the Bronx, New York November 27, 1915, a daughter of John and Charlotte (Winston) Cleary.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Connecticut Affiliate, Inc., 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, Connecticut 06450.

She is survived by her son, Richard Dardia of New Fairfield; her daughter, Charlotte Stiefel of South Carolina; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church, Route 39, New Fairfield.

The New Fairfield Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Russo

Eleanor Russo, a longtime resident of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., died June 26, 2000. She was 78.

Mrs. Russo was born May 20, 1922 in Italy to Michael and Antoinetta Rossi Trombetta. On September 30, 1945 she married Thomas A. Russo. Mrs. Russo was a homemaker and for 10 years she worked as a teacher's aide in the John Paulding School.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Toni Gallagher of Peekskill, N.Y., Joanne Hodges of Louisa City, Va., Frances Capocci of Danbury, Joseph Russo of Fishkill, N.Y. and Michael Russo of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. She was also a loving grandmother to Scott, John and Jillian Gallagher, Melissa, Megan and Nicole Capocci and Thomas and Dana Russo. She is also survived by her sister, Rena Waschin and sisters-in-law, Mary Pileggi and Frances Tuths.

Visitation will be at COFFEY FUNERAL HOME, on Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10:00 at St. Theresa of Avila Church with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to St. Anthony Bread for the Poor Franciscan Charity, 3140 Meranet St., St. Louis, MO 63118-9968.

Mildred H. Peterson

Mildred H. Peterson, 95, wife of the late Elmer W. Peterson, formerly of Glen Apartments, Danbury, died at Mediplex of Danbury on Monday evening, June 26, 2000.

She was born in Danbury August 8, 1904, daughter of the late William and Mary (Moffitt) Hoey. She was a graduate of Danbury High School and the Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Mrs. Peterson had worked for more than 40 years as a legal secretary in Danbury. She retired in 1968. She had been a member of St. Peter Church.

Mrs. Peterson is survived by a cousin, Frank Hunt of Whittier, Calif. In addition to her husband who died in 1984, she was predeceased by a sister, Loretta Hoey in 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, Danbury, on Friday morning at 10:30. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home on Friday morning from 9 to 10 a.m.

Contributions may be made to the National Federation of the Blind, 580 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, CT.

Jonathan R. Ullo

Jonathan R. Ullo, age 17, son of John and Patricia (Haug) Ullo of 19 Adams Hill Lane, Newtown, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, June 15, 2000 in the Danbury Hospital.

Jonathan was born in Danbury November 27, 1982. A resident of Newtown 4 years, he had previously lived in Bethel, Conn., London, England and Austin, Texas.

He had just completed his Junior year at Newtown High School. While at Newtown High School he was a member of the Key Club and a member of the Newtown High Track & Cross Country Team. He was also a former member of the Newtown Football Team. He was recently invited to the National Student Leadership Conference, Law & Advocacy Program.

Jonathan's sports interests included snowboarding, golf, parasailing and running.

He is survived, besides his parents, by 1 sister, Megan Ullo of Newtown; his maternal grandmother, Marie Haug of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Also survived by 10 Aunts & Uncles and 29 cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. Interment St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home Monday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Jonathan R. Ullo, Memorial Scholarship, c/o Newtown Scholarship Assn. Sadie Wittenberg Podkaminer

Sadie Wittenberg Podkaminer, 85, passed away Tuesday, June 13th, 2000, peacefully at her home at The Oaks in DeWitt, New York, after a long fight with cancer. She was surrounded by her family.

She was born in Brewster, New York in 1915. Her parents were Polish immigrants. She was loved and married to Philip Podkaminer for 58 years. Philip died November 4th, 1998. They lived their lives and raised their family in Brewster, New York, moving to DeWitt in 1998.

Sadie is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law. Joel and Bettina Podkaminer of Trumansburg, N.Y., Nathan and Jane Podkaminer of Jamesville, N.Y. and Robert Podkaminer and Judith Cortez of Santa Rosa, Calif. Her grandchildren are Joshua, Torrey, Kara, Zachary, Anne and Jacob Podkaminer. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Leon and Adele Podkaminer, Samuel Seifert, Lillian Wittenberg and Harry Eiseman; and her nieces and nephews, Jennifer Podkaminer Ganary, Donald Seifert, Allan Seifert, Stuart Eiseman, Steven Eiseman, Rebecca Wittenberg, Jeffrey, Cheryl and Philip Seifert. She was predeceased by a sister, Sophie Seifert; a brother, Jack Wittenberg; and a sister-in-law, Anne Eiseman.

This heroic woman gave lovingly, diligently and selflessly to her family, community and friends throughout her life. She believed in God and honesty, the value of hard work and the importance of education.

We are grateful to all the friends, family and caregivers who helped and comforted Sadie during her last days.

Services will be held at Rose Hill Memorial Park Chapel in Putnam Valley, N.Y. at 12 noon Friday. Interment will follow at King David Cemetery in Putnam Valley.

A contribution to Hospice of Central New York would be welcomed in her memory. Arrangements by the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave., Brewster, N.Y.

Joseph Lewis Knapp

Joseph L. Knapp, 70, a lifetime resident of Ridgefield, died on Tuesday (June 13) at New Milford Hospital after an extended illness. He was the husband of the late June A. Wrobel Knapp who died in March, 1999.

Mr. Knapp was born in Ridgefield on July 17, 1929, the sixth of ten children born to the late Joseph L. and Florence Coburn Knapp. he established his business, Knapp Bros., Inc., (tree surgeons) based in Ridgefield and is still located there.

He was an active member of the Board of Directors at the former Village Bank and Trust, as well as the present Webster Bank in Ridgefield, and was an active member of the Ridgefield Lions Club and other civic organizations. Mr. Knapp was also an antique automobile enthusiast.

Mr. Knapp was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Army.

Surviving are his four sons, David J. Knapp of Danbury, Daryl T. Knapp of Wyalusing, Pa., Darin S. Knapp of Sandy Hook and Dayle J. Knapp of Ridgefield; two daughters, Darcy A. Grondin of Danbury and Dawne M. Gosselin of New Milford; three brothers, Richard W. Knapp of Redding, Edward Knapp of Florida and Charles K. Knapp of New Fairfield; five sisters, Helen Spadaccino of Danbury, Dorothy Jacobellis of Georgia, Josephine Keene of Georgia, Mildred Molinaro of Danbury and Marjorie Evans-Denyko of New Fairfield; twenty grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and by the many friends he made along the way. He was also anxiously awaiting the birth of his first great-grandchild. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Knapp was predeceased by a sister, Florence Hayes of Ridgefield.

Services will be held on Saturday (June 17) at 11 a.m. in the First Church of Christ Congregational, Redding Center. The Rev. Dean C. Ahlberg, Pastor, will officiate. The interment is to be private.

Friends may call at the Bouton Funeral Home, 31 West Church Street, Georgetown on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

John Botterio

John Botterio of Dover Plains, formerly of Pleasantville, N.Y., passed away Wednesday. He was 79.

He was a stone mason-brick layer, retiring in 1989. He was a former member of the Pleasantville Fire Department and Ambulance Corps. He was a former Captain of the Fire Dept. Engine Co., former Fire Chief and a former Captain of the Pleasantville Ambulance Corps.

He is survived by his wife, Gaetana (D'Allura) Botterio; a daughter, Louise McMahon of Danbury; and grandson, Peter; a brother, Tony; and sisters, Eleanor Claro and Elba Tingos.

Reposing at the Maher Funeral Home, Pleasantville Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday 10:30 a.m. at Holy Innocents Church. Interment All Souls Cemetery.

Anna Kovaleski

Anna Kovaleski, mother of Mary Ann Balkunas, 84, died peacefully in her sleep at The Kent, a specialty care facility in Kent, Conn., on Wednesday, June 14, 2000 where she resided for the past four years.

Born June 18, 1915 in Larksville, Pa., she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Herko Chorey. She attended Larksville schools and had worked at the Duplan Silk Mill.

She was previously living at the Danbury Commons, Danbury and spent most of her life in Pennsylvania.

She was a member of St. Adalbert's Church in Glen Lyon and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 539.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Stephen; and brothers, Michael, Joseph and George.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Stephen Balkunas of Brookfield; a grandson, Stephen Balkunas Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; a granddaughter, Brenda Balkunas of Madison, Wis.; a brother, Nicholas of Dallas, Pa.; a brother, Peter of Larksville, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:00 a.m. Monday, June 19th from the Grontkowski Funeral Home, 51 W. Green St., Nanticoke, Pa. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. in the St. Adalbert's Church. Interment will be in St. Adalbert's Church Cemetery in Glen Lyon.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, June 18th.

Florence Fishman Ripps

June 14, 2000 Florence Fishman Ripps of 1126 W. Cypress Dr., Pompano Beach, Fla. Devoted wife of Saul Ripps. Beloved mother of Dr. Donald Ripps of Bridgewater and the late Lynda Kaloides. Loving mother-in-law of Harry Kaloides of Hamden. Dear sister of Jean Rosenstone of N.Y. and Elihu Fishman of Southbury. Cherished grandmother of Noah and Rebecca Ripps, Adam and Brent Kaloides. Adored step-grandmother of Leah, Chelsea and Ben Fairbanks.

Funeral services at the B'nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave., New Haven Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Lynda Kaloides Funds at Hamden Hall Country Day School, 1108 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT 06517. A period of mourning will be observed at 89 Kildeer Rd., Hamden. Funeral arrangements in care of the Robert E. Shure Funeral Home.

Earl Ralph Lewis

Earl Ralph Lewis, husband of Ruth Seeley Lewis, died at Glen Hill, Thursday, June 15, 2000. He was born in Danbury, October 9, 1918, a son of Harry and Jennie Schanze Lewis.

Mr. Lewis was a graduate of local schools and Danbury Teachers College in 1941. He received his Masters Degree at Yale and 6th Year Professional Certificate at the University of Bridgeport.

His first teaching position was in a one-room school in Hebron, CT, where he taught grades 5-8. He served as 8th grade teacher and Assistant Principal in Westbrook, CT, from 1945-1947. Mr. Lewis came to Bethel in 1947 as Teaching Principal. He was Principal of Berry School until 1968 when he became Assistant Principal of all Bethel Elementary Schools. He retired in 1980.

Mr. Lewis was a lifelong member of Central Christian Church where he served 2 terms as Chairman of the Congregation. He was also a member of the choir for many years. He was a member of Connecticut Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons No. 1067.

Besides his wife of 58 years, a son, Curtis, of Guantanamo Bay; several grandchildren; and a nephew survive him. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Dorothy.

The Memorial Service will be held at Central Christian Church on Tuesday, June 20, at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Timothy Crowley presiding. The family will greet friends in Fellowship Hall following the service.

Cremation and burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Central Christian Church or the Nelson Gelfman Dialysis Unit of Danbury Hospital.

Green Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leon Ohrt Jr.

Leon Ohrt Jr., age 58, of Houston, Texas, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000. He was a former resident of Victoria, TX, and Danbury, CT. He was born August 16, 1941, to the late Alois Leon Ohrt Sr. and Edna Gisler Jarvis of Cuero, Texas. He worked for Union Carbide and retired in Connecticut.

Leon is survived by his mother; children Karen Tracy of New Fairfield, CT; Kathryn Szalasny of Boynton Beach, FL, and Darryl Ohrt of Brookfield, CT; sister, Edith Ralls of Houston, TX; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 18, 2000, from 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2000, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Galveston Bay Foundation, c/o Linda Shead, 17324-A Highway 3, Webster, TX 77598.

Joseph Falk

Joseph Falk, 84, of Fairfield, formerly of Norwalk, husband of the late Rose Lillian Kaplin, Falk, died Thursday.

Mr. Falk was a retired postal clerk in South Norwalk and veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.

Survivors include two sons, Lee Falk of Bethel and Martin Falk of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two brothers, Leo Falk of Scottsdale, AZ, and H. William Falk of Hartsdale, NY; one sister, Mildred Miller of Coral Springs, FL; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place Sunday at 11 a.m. in Temple Beth El, 109 East Ave., Norwalk. Interment may be made to the Jewish Home for the Elderly, 175 Jefferson St., Fairfield, CT 06430, or Temple Beth El, 109 East Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851.
