Alfred F. Ockel
Alfred F. Ockel, 87, formerly of Arrow Meadow Road, New Fairfield, died Wednesday at Morristown Memorial Hospital, New Jersey. Mr. Ockel was the husband of the late Bernadine Helen Brennig Ockel.

He was born in Germany, Nov. 9, 1911, a son of Herman and Rosa Ockel.

Mr. Ockel worked for Amphenol for many years. He was a member of the New Fairfield Congregational Church and was a volunteer for the New Fairfield Company A Fire Department.

He is survived by a son, George Ockel of New Jersey; a daughter, Margaret Williams of Danbury; a sister, Frieda DeSissino of New Jersey; three grandchildren and several nieces.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 40 North Street, Danbury, Connecticut, CT 06810.

Calling hours: Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the New Fairfield Funeral Home, Route 37 at Cottontail Road, New Fairfield.

Services: Saturday at 2 p.m. at the New Fairfield Funeral Home with the Rev. Patricia Nicholas officiating. Burial will follow at Mountainview Cemetery, New Fairfield.

Francis X. Berry
Francis X. Berry, 38, of 21 Ramapoo Hill Road, Ridgefield, died Thursday, Feb. 4, at St. Francis Medical Center in Hartford after a long illness.

Mr. Berry was born in New York City on March 24, 1960, a son of Catherine E. Higgins Berry of Ridgefield and the late James William Berry. He was 1978 graduate of Ridgefield High School. Mr. Berry was a former employee with the Ridgefield Department of Public Works.

Mr. Berry was a longtime Ridgefield resident and member of St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield. He was predeceased by his father in February 1997.

Besides his mother, survivors include two brothers, Brian R. of Danbury and Owen T. of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Kathleen E. Berry-Selwitz of Danbury and Christine A. Berry of Ridgefield. Two nephews also survive.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends will be received on Monday from 11 a.m. to the time of the service at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

Ernest Darby
Ernest Darby, 85, of 624 Danbury Road, Ridgefield, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Laurelwood Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Thelma Darby.

Born in Aldridge, Staffordshire, England, May 6, 1913, he was a son of Edward and Harriet (Flint) Day. He attended schools in England.

Mr. Darby served in the British Army during World War II and was a Japanese prisoner of war in the Changi Jail in Siam.

He worked as a gardener in England on the Rodolphe D'Erlanger Estate, prior to his retirement.

Mr. Darby came to the United States in 1980 and resided in New Fairfield and Bethel before moving to Ridgefield.

He is survived by a son, Keith Darby of Haverhill, N.H., and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Joseph Carbonaro
Joseph Carbonaro, age 58, of Atlantic City, NJ, died Friday at the Atlantic City Medical Center. He was born in Bronx, NY, April 3, 1940, a son of the late Michael and Diana (Razzano) Carbonaro. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in the Bronx. Mr. Carbonaro worked in fabric sales and manufacturing for many years before going on to work as a chef at Duke Macks Restaurant in Atlantic City, NJ. He is survived by a son, Michael Carbonaro of Chicago, IL; and his sisters and brothers, Angela McClusky of Connecticut and Florida, Edward Carbonaro of Wappingers Falls, NY, Emily Razzano of San Diego, CA and Michael Carbonaro of New Fairfield. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward the Confessor Church, New Fairfield, on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Mountainview Cemetery, New Fairfield. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Carol W. Preusser
Carol W. Preusser died at St. Vincent Hospital, Bridgeport on Feb. 7, 1999 at the age of 52. She lived at 9 Lakewood Dr., Trumbull and was the wife of David F. Preusser. Carol was born in Mt. Kisco, New York, Nov. 9, 1946 daughter of Eleanor E. MacKechnie Wilhelm and the late J. Ernest Wilhelm. She settled in Danbury as a young child and attended Danbury schools. She graduated from Danbury High School Class of 1964. She was Vice President and Co-owner of the Preusser Research Group Inc. working with the US Department and the Ct. Department of Transportation in highway safety research. Mrs. Preusser was a 4 time elected official of the Trumbull Town Council serving as a Chairman of the Pubic Works Committee and Vice Chairman of the Town Council. Besides her husband of Trumbull and her mother of Danbury, she is survived by a sister, Joan Sacowitz of Trumbull, and her aunt Isabelle Wilhelm of Brewster, NY, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury on Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Rev. James Stenson officiating. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at Cornell Memorial Home at the time of the service. Contributions may be made in Carol's memory to the American Cancer Society, 57 North St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Margaret B. Mitchell
Margaret (Brennan) Mitchell, 71, of 7 Edelweiss Lane, Ridgefield, wife of the late Walter B.J. Mitchell, Jr., died on Saturday afternoon at the Laurelwood Rehabilitation Center, Ridgefield. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Neponsit, Long Island, July 10, 1927, a daughter of the late William R. and Margaret Mary (Healy) Brennan. She attended New York schools and graduated from Manhattanville College Class of 1949, with a major in music and English literature. She was a retired financial manager for the Olin Corporation of Stamford where she was employed from 1974 to 1992. Bridge playing and the New York Times crossword puzzles were her enjoyment as well as her family. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church of Ridgefield. She is survived by three children, Walter B.J. Mitchell, III of Plainville, MA, Margaret M. Mitchell of Chicago, IL and Janet M. Mitchell of Newtown, CT. a brother, John J. Brennan of Manhasset, L.I., New York and a sister, Sr. Beatrice Brennan, RSCJ of New York, NY, as well as three grandchildren, Ally, Nora and Katie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Ridgefield. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Friends will be received in the Kane Funeral Home 41 Catoonah Street Ridgefield on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials in Mrs. Mitchell's memory may be made to the Food for the Poor, St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 520 Ridgebury Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877.

Robert J. McCarthy
Robert J. McCarthy, 71, of New Port Richey, FL and Onset, MA, formerly of Danbury, husband of the late Dorothy (Brosz) McCarthy died at the New Port Richey Medical Center on Saturday evening. He was born in Danbury, April 15, 1927, son of the late Martin & Mercine (Dann) McCarthy. He was a graduate of Danbury schools and had served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He had worked at Republic Foil in Danbury for 25 years and then worked at Richter Park in Danbury. Mr. McCarthy, who was an avid golfer, retired in 1987. He had been a Danbury resident most all of his life, however, for the past few years, he had summered in Onset, MA and wintered in New Port Richey, FL. Mr. McCarthy is survived by 2 daughters, Kathy Snopkoski and Karen Sauli; a son, Robert J. McCarthy, Jr. all of Danbury; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary & Mitch Mucinsky of Bethel; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John & Ethel Brosz and Marge & Ken Holick, all of Danbury; his companion, Aris Macristas of Danbury; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and several nieces & nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury, on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Lillian E. Shaw
Lillian E. Shaw, age 68, wife of Robert B. Shaw of 10 Stone Fence Lane, Newtown, died Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Danbury Hospital. She was born in Stamford, Nov. 15, 1930, daughter of the late August and Elen Johanson Swenson. She has been a resident of Newtown the past 22 years and a member of the Newtown Congregational Church. A dedicated bridge player, she was a member of several area bridge clubs. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Randall B. Shaw of Granby, CT, two daughters, Barbara McKinney of Manchester, CT, and Pamela Shaw of Danbury; two sisters, Isabel Chamberlain of Stamford and Margaret Morsa of Trumbull; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steven Gordon officiating. Interment in St. Rose Cemetery. Walter J. Tyrseck
Walter J. Tyrseck, age 89, of 6 Hardwick Road, Quaker Hill, died Saturday at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

He was born in Willimantic, July 25, 1909, the son of Peter and Mary Dobranski Tyrseck. He married H. Jane Mullen Tyrseck in Bronxville, N.Y. Oct. 31, 1953; she survives.

Mr. Tyrseck was retired from the Robertson Paper Box Company, where he had been employed for 47 years. He retired as a senior structural designer. He was a graduate of the former Chapman Technical High School in New London. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion in Montville. He was a past member of the New London Country Club.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son Richard K. Tyrseck of Danbury; a daughter Judith Nesdill of Waterford; three sisters, Helen Gero of Uncasville; Blanche Church and Sophie Collins, both of Quaker Hill; three grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Henry Tyrseck and Frank Tyrseck, and a sister Josephine Tyrseck.

The funeral procession will assemble at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday afternoon from 3-7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice of Southeast Connecticut of to the Visiting Nurses Association of S.E. Connecticut.

Ethel N. Anderson
Ethel N. Anderson, 94, a resident of Darien since 1935 and the wife of the late T.E. Anderson, died February 7, 1999 at the Homestead Health Center.

She was born in Newtown, Conn., March 14, 1904, a daughter of Lester C. and Mary E. Sudder Nicholson.

Before her retirement in 1968, Mrs. Anderson was employed for 25 years as a bookkeeper with Airkem, Inc.

Her survivors include several nieces and one nephew and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Mildred Lincoln of Danbury.

There are no calling hours.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, Conn.

Interment will be in Branchville Cemetery, Georgetown, Conn.

Christian Peterson
Christian Martin Peterson, 78, of Bennitt St., New Milford, husband of the late Mildred (Lofgren) Peterson, died Friday at New Milford Hospital.

He was born July 9, 1920, in Laget, Norway, a son of the late Peter and Marie Kristensen Peterson. He moved to the United States in 1931.

Mr. Peterson was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the Burma, China and India theaters. Before his retirement in 1982, he had worked for many years at the Kimberly-Clark Corp. in New Milford.

He had lived in Morris from 1983 to 1994 before moving to New Milford.

Mr. Peterson is survived by a son, Richard J. Peterson of New Milford; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Peterson-Calarco of New Milford; two sisters, Lillian Erickson of Washington and Persis Barton of Higganum, Conn.; three grandchildren, Anna Daniels, Christian Peterson, and Ingrid Peterson; and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth R. Peterson.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Burial will be in New Preston Cemetery, Washington, in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lillian M. Duane
Lillian M. Duane, age 91, of 12 Coopers Lane, New Milford, died February 4 at the Palm Bay Community Hospital, Palm Bay, Fla.

Born in Valhalla, N.Y., Jan. 5, 1908, she was the daughter of William and Mary (Mackelroy) Duane.

She was a graduate of Pleasantville High School and was a longtime member of Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, N.Y.

Miss Duane worked for many years as a secretary at the Dayton, Corey, McIntosh and Dubbin Insurance Agency in Pleasantville, N.Y.

She was also a longtime resident of Hawthorne and Valhalla, N.Y.

Miss Duane was the beloved aunt of Dr. Roxane Telesha of Bethel and Rev. Robert J. Duane of Far Rockaway, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, N.Y on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Greenburgh, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Wednesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

George Mello
George Mello, 56, a lifetime area resident, died Monday at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Mello, of 1 Martino Lane, Bethel, Conn., was the husband of Patricia (Martin) Mello.

He was born in Danbury, Conn., on Oct. 15, 1942. He is survived by his parents, Jack and Flo (Baldelli) Mello Lanigan of Bethel.

He attended Danbury High School.

Mr. Mello was a Special Police Officer for the Danbury Police Department for 18 years. He was employed as a mason for Western Connecticut State University.

He was a member of the Blue Knights.

Besides his wife and mother and father, his survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Mello of Danbury; two sons, Alan W. Marron and William R. Marron, both of Danbury; a brother, Jay Lanigan of Sparta, N.J.; a sister, Marianne Dwyer of New Fairfield; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends will be received at The Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Arlene Gallagher
Arlene Gallagher, age 77, of Brewster, N.Y., widow of Charles E. Gallagher, died Feb. 9, 1999 at Putnam Hospital Center, Carmel, N.Y.

Mrs. Gallagher was born Aug. 8, 1921 in Brewster, N.Y., the daughter of the late Oscar and Nora (Ward) Sniffen. She was a Brewster resident all of her life and attended schools in Brewster. She was a member of the Donate Club in Brewster and the Irish American Club of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Mrs. Gallagher is survived by nine sons, Harold of Lake Carmel, N.Y.; Clarence, Charles and Richard of Patterson, N.Y.; Irving of Beacon, N.Y.; Ronald of Wingdale, N.Y.; Oscar of Poughkeepsie; Douglas of Ocala, Fla. and Kenneth of Brewster; and by five daughters, Sandra VanKeuren of Carmel; Lillian Acocella of Brookfield, Fla.; Jean McTighe of Brewster; Helen Hyatt of Patterson and Lena Delaney Gallagher of Pleasant Valley, N.Y. She is also survived by two brothers, Ronald Sniffen of Elmsford, N.Y. and Irving Sniffen of Brewster; one sister, Emma McGrath of Poughkeepsie; 59 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, 10 a.m., at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, N.Y. with the Rev. Kenneth White officiating. Interment will be in Milltown Rural Cemetery, Brewster.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Florence DeFlorio Vermilyea
Florence DeFlorio Vermilyea, 92, of 221 Chestnut Grove, New Milford, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the wife of Charles R. Vermilyea.

Mrs. Vermilyea was born in New York City on May 1, 1906. She was a longtime resident of Greenwich, Conn. and for a number of years had lived in New Milford. She had been a hairdresser for some 30 years at Sena's in New York and also had worked at William's of Port Chester, N.Y. She was a longtime volunteer at Greenwich Hospital and later at the John Dempsey Medical Center in Farmington, where she resided before moving to New Milford.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Peter G. and Kathleen Fox Vermilyea; a son, Charles R. Vermilyea Jr. of Storrs, Conn.; three brothers, Jerry DeFlorio of Avon, Harry DeFlorio of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and Albert DeFlorio of Thornton, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Peter C. Vermilyea of Litchfield, Conn., Megan Vermilyea of Fredericksburg, Va., and John Vermilyea and Elizabeth Vermilyea, both of Storrs, Conn.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford to Our Lady of the Lakes Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich, Conn.

Friends may call at Lillis Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Bunrieng Ros
Bunrieng Ros, 70, of 14A Peace Street, Danbury, husband of the late Chanty (Bith) Ros, died at Danbury Hospital on Feb. 9, 1999.

He was born in Cambodia on Jan. 21, 1929, son of the late Kear and Yem (Pen) Ros.

Before retirement, Mr. Ros was employed as a detective for the Cambodian F.B.I.

He is survived by two sons, Sok Hak Ros and Vanno Ros, both of Danbury; six daughters, Chantha Chau, Chanrath Som, Chanrany Evuen, Chanthan Prak, Chanthy Chhom and Chansophy Deab, all of Danbury; a brother, Kear Ros of Texas; 14 grandchildren; three nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services and cremation will take place at Mountain Grove Crematory in Bridgeport, Conn.

Friends will be received Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury.

Alice B. Shattuck
Alice B. Shattuck, 94, of 33 Lincoln Avenue, Danbury, mother of Mary Scharf and Carolyn McCallie, both of Danbury, died on Tuesday morning, Feb. 9, 1999 at the Pope John Paul II Center for Healthcare, Danbury.

Mrs. Shattuck was the wife of the late Homer G. Shattuck.

Mrs. Shattuck was born in Wyoming, N.Y., on Oct. 14, 1904, a daughter of the late George and Jenny (Ewell) Shattuck. She attended New York state schools.

A resident of Danbury since 1993, coming from Rye, N.Y., she was a member of the Rye Presbyterian Church of Rye, N.Y.

Her husband and her family were the most special cares of her life.

In addition to her daughters, she is survived by her two sons-in-law, Albert Scharf and Walter McCallie, as well as her grandchildren and their spouses, Cherie Scharf, Diane Pimentel and her husband Richard, Clifford Scharf and his wife Denise, David McCallie and Cindy Hedin and her husband Robert, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family in the Rye Presbyterian Church, Rye, N.Y.

Interment will follow.

There will be no calling hours.

Barry I. Cantor
Barry I. Cantor of Sandy Hook, Conn., died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999 at Danbury Hospital. He was 53.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 8, 1945, the son of Eddie and Miriam Kushner Cantor.

He was a systems analyst doing private consulting work.

He married Maryann Kane in Delray Beach, Fla., in 1981.

In addition to his wife of Sandy Hook, he is survived by his son, Adam, of Sandy Hook and his father of Mahopac, N.Y. His mother died in 1991.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at King David Memorial Park in Putnam Valley, N.Y.

In his memory, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 40 North St., Danbury, CT 06810.
