Henry C. Schum

Henry C. Schum, 79, of 34 Abbott Avenue, Danbury, died at the Candlewood Nursing Home in New Milford on Monday, Jan. 18, 1999.

He was born in Bronx, N.Y.. on Oct. 28, 1919, son of the late George W. and Kathrina (Rebhan) Schum. He grew up in the Bronx and was a graduate of Roosevelt High School. Mr. Schum moved to Danbury more than 55 years ago and was a retired employee of the R.F. Amphenol Company of Danbury.

He was a life member of the South Norwalk Boat Club, life member of the U.S. Power Squadron & Chaplain, past captain of the Padanaram Hose Company and a member of the Fairfield County Chief's Emergency Plan. He was also a past member of the Zoning Board of Appeals of the City of Danbury and a former chairman of the ZBA.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris (McStay) Schum of Danbury and a nephew, Paul McStay of Waterbury.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury on Friday at 10 a.m. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Catherine Sheehan Wasson

Catherine Sheehan Wasson, wife of Robert Bruce Wasson of Huntington Beach, California and daughter of Phyllis and Charles Speidel of Taunton Lane, Newtown, died Jan. 10, 1999 at the West Anaheim Medical Center, Anaheim, California following an illness of two months.

She was born Dec. 19, 1945 in Richmond Hill, N.Y., and graduated Richmond Hill High School in 1963, Quinnipiac College, Hamden, Connecticut in 1967 and Florida State University, Tallahassee, in 1973. Following graduation, she and her husband moved to California.

Catherine was predeceased by her mother, Maureen Keenaghan Speidel, in 1958 and an infant son, Ryan, in 1982.

In addition to her husband of 25 years, she is survived by three children, Travis, Colin and Meghan.

She is also survived by three sisters, Gay Suzanne Alvarez of Sewanee, Tennessee, Diane Benton of Newtown, Conn., and Corinne Speidel of Dillingham, Alaska and her brother, Christopher of Durham, N.C.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, Jan. 15 at St. Bonaventure Church, Huntington Beach, followed by burial near her son Ryan in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Huntington Beach.

Mark T. Gallagher

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated for Mark T. Gallagher, 53, of Portland, Ore., formerly of Bethel, on Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Bethel.

Mr. Gallagher, who died in Portland on Jan. 3, 1999, is the son of John T. and Barbara (Bennett) Gallagher of Bethel.

Emily (Pfeifer) Whelan

Emily (Pfeifer) Whelan, 94, of Redding, Conn., formerly of Babylon, Long Island, N.Y., wife of the late Daniel A. Whelan, died at Danbury Hospital on Jan. 18, 1999.

She was born Dec. 6, 1904 in New York, N.Y., daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Mueller) Pfeifer. Until her retirement, she was employed as a legal secretary for the law firm of Davis, Polk, Warddell, Gardner and Reed of New York City.

From 1950 to 1987, Mrs. Whelan resided on Argyle Ave. in Babylon, N.Y. She then moved to Redding, Conn., to make her home with her daughter. For over 30 years she was chairperson of Good Samaritan Hospital Gift Shop in West Islip, N.Y.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Dolores and Peter W. Russell of Redding, Conn. and Monica W. and Dr. Allan T. Kent of Chelmsford, Mass.; and by four grandchildren, Daniel W. Russell, Marney Russell, David Owen Kent and Merideth Kent Altenweg. Mrs. Whelan was predeceased by her husband, Daniel A. Whelan, who was president of American Title Co. of Manhattan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church, Redding, Conn. Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Pinelawn, N.Y.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, Conn. on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Friends are asked to please omit flowers. Contributions may be made to the Hanahoe Memorial Children's Clinic, 205 Main St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Gerhart Ristau

Gerhart Ristau, 90, of Norwalk, husband of Honnour Hackett Ristau, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999 in the Norwalk Hospital.

Born in Germany on Jan.15, 1909, the son of the late Adolf and Matilda Ristau, he was a local resident for most of his life.

Until his retirement, he was employed with the Perkin-Elmer Corp. in Norwalk. Mr. Ristau was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 5th Infantry Division. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and was a POW in Germany. He was a member of and was retired from the Connecticut National Guard. He was a member of Post -603 of VFW, American Legion Post -12, The Purple Heart Assn., The National Organization of POW, The Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Redmen.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gerhart "Kookie" Ristau of New Milford and Theodore "Ted" Ristau of Norwalk; one daughter, Dorothy R. Cable of Norwalk; one sister, Emma Skarupa of Torrington; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk with Father Bert Pinciaro of St. Philip's Church officiating. Burial with full military honors will take place in St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Lena D. Blaney

Lena D. Blaney, 87, of 52 Locust Avenue, Danbury, formerly of Brewster, N.Y., wife of the late George Blaney, died at the Danbury Hospital on Monday morning.

She was born in Danbury, Feb. 4, 1911, daughter of the late Angelo and Angeline (Donatoni) Gaboardi. She grew up in Danbury and was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1928.

In 1950 she married Mr. Blaney and moved to Brewster, N.Y., where she resided until his death in 1979. She then returned to Danbury and has been a resident here since that time. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Danbury.

Mrs. Blaney is survived by three brothers: Angelo "Mike" Gaboardi of Bethel; Theodore Gaboardi and Joseph Gaboardi, both of Danbury; two sisters; Mary Kyve and Josephine Muckenhoupt, both of Danbury; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Milltown Rural Cemetery, Brewster. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Wednesday evening from 5 to 8.

Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

James Arbuthnot Jackson
James A. Jackson, 62, of Charlotte, Vt., and formerly of Stowe, Vt., passed away on Jan. 17, 1999 after a brief illness. Jim was born in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 10, 1936, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fielding Jackson of Ridgefield, Conn.

He was a graduate of Proctor Academy, St. Lawrence University and Columbia Business School. Following graduation from Columbia, Jim worked for Eastman, Dillon in New Haven, Conn., as a stockbroker.

After several years in New Haven, Jim moved to Stowe,and joined the Sepp Ruschp Ski School, soon becoming a certified instructor. Jim enjoyed the water and became an avid yachtsman and hockey player. He was a skilled skeet shooter and photographer. He enjoyed spending time with friends at The Shed Restaurant and fishing in the Carribean.

Jim became involved in land development, commencing with the first phase of the Mansfield View Properties. This project evolved into a development which provided much needed affordable home sites for working people in the town of Stowe.

In 1974, Ice Rink Services was formed by Bob Murray and Gub Langdon. Shortly thereafter, Jim was approached by the group for financial support. Jim not only provided a large portion of the funding for the current ice rink but purchased a Zamboni to service the ice. In November of 1982, the Stowe Selectboard, upon recommendation of the Recreation Commission, renamed the Stowe Ice Rink the Jackson Arena in honor of Jim's work and support as a donating citizen.

Throughout his years in Stowe and many years thereafter, Jim was an ongoing supporter of Copley Hospital and the Copley Endowment Fund as well as many other charitable causes.

After moving to the Burlington area, Jim became involved in many regional efforts including substance abuse counseling, the healing arts and environmental issues. He spent much time at Sweetwater's and Luenig's. Encouraged by his wife, Sandy, an accomplished artist, Jim started painting as a hobby and soon achieved a measure of artistic talent of his own. He was an avid movie-goer and music listener.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sandra Mayo Jackson of Charlotte and her daughter, Kimberly Leddy of Columbus, Ohio; a sister Julia Young and brother-in-law Roslyn D. Young Jr. of Chevy Chase, Maryland; three nieces and many dear and lifelong friends, including their dog, Finnegan.

A remembrance of Jim's life will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at the Stowe Community Church. A reception will follow at The Shed Restaurant. In memory of Jim, donations may be made to the Charlotte Rescue Squad, Charlotte, VT 05445 or the Visiting Nurses Association, 25 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446.

Those of you who cannot attend Thursday's gathering, there will be another held in Charlotte in the spring. An announcement of the date, time and place will be posted. Thank you for your concern.

Gladys P. Reynolds
Gladys P. Reynolds, formerly of Danbury, died at Cheyenne Residential and Nursing Home, Las Vegas, Nevada January 14, 1999.

She was born in North Salem, New York December 18, 1907, the daughter of Eugene and Alice Brewer Purdy.

She retired from the New England Shirt Company in 1963 and was a member of the Danbury Senior Center.

She was predeceased by her husband Percy C. Reynolds Sr. and her daughter Ancelet Reynolds DiGrazia, a granddaughter Carolyn Reynolds, a grandson Douglas DiGrazia and a great-grandson Edson Reynolds.

She is survived by a brother Arnold Purdy of Ridgefield and a sister Yvette Murphy of Danbury, 3 sons Percy Reynolds Jr. of Danbury, William Reynolds of Idaho and Edson Reynolds of Stanhope, New Jersey, 3 daughters Eugena (Jeanne) Baldwin & Carolyn Murphy of Las Vegas with whom she lived since 1993 and Jane Wilcox of New Milford.

Cremation followed a memorial service January 17, 1999 in Las Vegas.

Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Bethel in June at the convenience of the family.

Ruth F. Smith

Ruth F. Smith, age 86, wife of the late Donald T. Smith of 6 Sunset Hill Rd., Newtown, CT died Jan. 20, 1999 in the Danbury Hospital. She was born in Shaftsburg, VT Dec. 6, 1912, daughter of the late Harry & Edith (Strong) Farnham.

Mrs. Smith was a resident of Newtown since 1957. She was a member of the Newtown Congregational Church, former driver for Meals on Wheels, member of the League of Women Voters, the Salvation Army Service Unit & Food Pantry. For several years she served papers for the Newtown Probate Court.

She is survived by 2 sons Robert W. Smith of Newtown and David F. Smith of Boulder Crest, CA. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Newtown Congregational Church Sat. Jan. 23, 1999 at 2:00pm. Interment Newtown Village Cemetery in the Spring. Contributions may be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit, Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.

Janet Anderheggen French

Janet Anderheggen French of Alstead, New Hampshire born September 5, 1928 died Tuesday January 19, 1999 in her sleep at home following a long battle with cancer.

Jan, a Goucher College graduate had been a resident of Newtown and Ridgefield, CT, prior to moving to New Hampshire with her husband Carroll Davies French.

Jan's career included working as a learning disabilities teacher in Wilton, CT and then in private practice as a psychotherapist. Her interest in horses as well as being an accomplished musician on harpsichord and recorders brought her and others many hours of joy.

In New Hampshire, for several years she served on the Board of Trustees and as President of the Monadnock Area Pastoral Counseling Services. Jan's caring and support will long be remembered and missed by all who had the good fortune to know her. Jan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Jan is survived by her loving husband Carroll Davies French of New Hampshire, her son Chris Anderheggen of Brookfield, CT, her daughter Lise Anderheggen-Lief, son-in-law William Lief, granddaughter Gabrielle Lief all of Seattle, WA, and her stepdaughters Alice Jacobs of Buffalo, N.Y., Susan Files of South Africa.

A memorial service will be held at the Second Congregational Church in East Alstead, N.H., on Saturday January 30th at 12:00 noon. There are no visiting hours.

Helene Branch

Helene (Popp) Branch, 68, of 40 Williams St., Danbury, wife of the late Donald Branch, died at Heritage Heights Health Care Center on Jan. 20, 1999.

She was born in Eslarn, Germany, Feb. 15, 1930, a daughter of the late Helmut and Anna (Reindel) Popp. She attended school in Germany.

Mrs. Branch was a sales associate for K-Mart Department Store. She retired in April of 1998.

Her survivors include 2 daughters, Billie Ballas of New Milford and Barbara Branch of Danbury; 2 sons, Peter Trommer of New Fairfield and Dennis Branch of Danbury; and 2 grandchildren.

Private Funeral Services and Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

Ernest Parmallee

Ernest Parmallee, age 86, of Norwalk, CT, died at Norwalk Hospital on Jan. 15, 1999.

He was born in New Milford, CT, April 30, 1912, a son of the late Ernest & Leta (Parmaley) Parmallee, Sr.

Mr. Parmallee is survived by a brother, Henry of Bethel; 2 sisters, Dorothy Lengel of Florida and Fannie Dreback of Louisiana; and several nieces & nephews.

Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

Patricia M. Andres, nee Shelley, former resident of Bethel and New Milford. Beloved wife of Peter. Loving mother of Lori (Bruce) Richards, John and Kathleen. Winifred Mancusi

Winifred "Terri" Mancusi, age 91, of 12 Sunset Hill Rd., Bethel, Ct. died on Wednesday at Bethel Health Care. She was the wife of the late Vincent A. Mancusi.

Mrs. Mancusi was born in Montaque, MA, November 5, 1907, a daughter of the late James and Winifred Maxwell Kelly. Formerly of White Plains, New York, Mrs. Mancusi has been a resident of the Bethel area for the past 22 years and is a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, Bethel. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and even at the age of 91 she was still able to enjoy sewing.

Mrs. Mancusi is survived by a daughter Judith McKinney, and her husband Frank Borysiewicz of Bethel, a granddaughter Megan McKinney, and 2 step-grandsons, Jonathan and Thomas Borysiewicz all of Bethel, CT, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be conducted from the Hull Home, 60 Division Street, Danbury Saturday morning at 9:30am with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 o'clock, at St. Mary's Church, Bethel. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel.

Family will receive friends at the Hull Home, 60 Division Street, Danbury, CT, Friday afternoon from 4 until 7PM.

Robert A. Gallo

Robert A. Gallo, 45, husband of Paula (DiNoia) Gallo, of 8 Cedar St., Danbury died at the Danbury Hospital on Monday evening as a result of gun shot wounds received in a robbery that occurred at his liquor store on North Street in Danbury.

He was born in Danbury, Nov. 22, 1953 son of F. Anthony Gallo of Danbury and the late Ruth (Reynolds) Gallo. A lifetime Danbury area resident, he was a graduate of Danbury High School and the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He was a drummer, and in the 1960's played in a band, "Southern Comfort". He had managed the Hi-Way Package Store, which his father had founded, for more than 20 years.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by 3 daughters; Meghan Gallo, Alicia Gallo and Rachel Gallo, all of New Milford; 2 stepchildren; John Keenan & Stephanie Keenan both of Danbury; a sister, Donna G. Miller of Palm Coast, FL; an aunt, Adeline Dohan of Danbury and three nephews. He was predeceased by his mother in 1996 and two brothers, Jay in 1987 and Gregory in 1995.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury on Friday morning at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in St. Peter Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Charles J. LaVally, Jr.
Charles J. "Chuck" LaVally, Jr. died peacefully at home Friday evening after a year long battle with cancer. Chuck was born on July 13, 1930, in Barker, NY. He graduated from the Barker Central School and the University of Notre Dame. He received his degree in 1953 from the School of Mechanical Engineering.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1956 and the Naval Reserve until 1969.

After leaving the Navy, Church spent 30 years working in the life sciences instrument industry. He held various sales and management positions prior to retiring.

Chuck was actively involved in the Fox Hill Lake Association since moving to Ridgefield in 1979. He served as vice president of the association for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn of Ridgefield; his sister, Clara Cooper of Riverview, FL; three children, Deborah LaVally of Ridgefield, David LaVally of Poolesville, MD, and Beverly Malley of Bolton, MA; and three grandchildren, John Charles Malley, Kathleen Jocelyn Malley, and Michael Charles LaVally.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Parish in Ridgefield on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Yale University School of Medicine to support the oncology research of Frank Hsu, M.D., P.O. Box 208032, New Haven, CT 06520-8032.
