Charles Winans

Charles Winans, 62, of Dunrobin Lane in Watertown, Conn. died on Friday, May 28, 1999 at his home. He was the husband of Dolores (Mongillo) Winans.

Mr. Winans was born in Pelham, N.Y. on April 9, 1937, son of the late Arthur and Hortense (Seldner) Winans. He was a graduate of Danbury High School. He received his B.S. from Fairfield University in 1958 and his master's from the University of Hartford in 1965.

Mr. Winans retired from the State of Connecticut Department of Vocational Education as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. He was a former member of the Board of Directors at Assumption College. He was a Literacy Volunteer in Waterbury. He also volunteered at the Interfaith Ministries Food Bank and Waterbury Hospital. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Watertown.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Christopher G. Winans of New Fairfield, Matthew A. Winans of Burlington, Mass. and Timothy J. Winans of Manhattan, N.Y.; two brothers, B. Garvey Winans of Georgetown, S.C. and Joseph Winans of Danbury; five sisters, Virginia Winans of Chester, Conn., Madeline Winans of Chester, Marie Galbraith of Thomaston, Patricia Vandewater of Danbury and Rita Larkin of Israel; and two grandchildren, Grace Marie Winans and Peter Joseph Winans, both of New Fairfield.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday at St. Peter's Cemetery, Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, 6 p.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church, 574 Main St., Watertown. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are by Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John School, 21 Academy Road, Watertown, CT 06795 or St. Mary Magdalen School, 140 Buckingham St., Oakville, CT 06779.

Estelle O. Sunderland

Estelle Olsson Sunderland died at age 94 in her home in Osterville, Mass., on Friday, May 28, 1999. She was the widow of Dr. William A. Sunderland of Danbury, Conn., who passed away in 1963.

The daughter of Swedish immigrants, Ivor and Julia Olsson, Mrs. Sunderland was raised in Norwich, Conn., and graduated from Norwich Free Academy and from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1927.

She had served as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit and the admissions office of Danbury Hospital, where she was a life member of the Danbury Hospital Corporation. In 1969, Mrs. Sunderland moved to Osterville, Mass., where she built and maintained her home through the 1990s.

She is survived by sons William A. Sunderland Jr. of Norwalk, Conn. and John O. Sunderland of Osterville, Mass.; granddaughter Debra Antonelli of Tewsbury, Mass.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be private.

Any remembrances should be made to the Danbury Hospital or Cape Cod Hospital.

Miles L. Ferry

Miles L. Ferry, age 86, a well-known Brookfield businessman, died on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 in the Danbury Hospital. Mr. Ferry was the husband of Ruth (Nobel) Ferry and resided at 52 Obtuse Road South.

He was born in Brookfield, Conn. on November 2, 1912, a son of the late William and Caroline (Parker) Ferry. Mr. Ferry was a lifelong resident of Brookfield, where for many years he operated a farm. He then operated the Ferry Excavating Company.

Mr. Ferry was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Pocono Grange #191.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Clayton Ferry of Brookfield; a daughter, Mildred Chase of Braintree, Vt.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Lizauskas.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, 6 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookfield. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown.

Wilfred Thompson

Wilfred Thompson, 90, of Norwood, Mass., formerly of Danbury, died on May 24, 1999. He was the beloved husband of Helen (Staffey) Thompson.

Born in Newark, N.J., Mr. Thompson lived most of his life in Danbury. He worked for many years for Leahy's, as driver, sales rep, office manager and dispatcher, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Citizens Hose Company.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Ann Elizabeth Clark of Foxboro, Mass., and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, 2 p.m., at St. James Episcopal Church, 25 West St., Danbury. An interment service will follow at Wooster Cemetery in Danbury.

Please omit flowers. Donations in Mr. Thompson's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Arrangements are by the Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 30 South St., Foxboro, Mass.

Walt Winiarski

Walt Winiarski, 73, of 8310 Wattsburg Road, Erie, PA 16509, died on May 19, 1999.

He was the father of Bob Winiarski of New Milford, and had retired from Kimberly-Clark in New Milford.

Besides his son, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Sauer of Kenmore, N.Y. and Crystal Blanchard of Erie, Pa.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Services will be held on June 12 at his daughter's residence in Erie, Pa., where Mr. Winiarski had been living.

Joan L. Kowalski

Joan L. Kowalski, 68, of 160 Walnut Hill Rd., Bethel, wife of Edward S. Kowalski, died at the Danbury Hospital on Wednesday morning.

She was born in Danbury, April 20, 1931, daughter of Katherine (Parks) Lounsbury of Danbury and the late Thomas A. Lounsbury. Mrs. Kowalski had attended Danbury schools and had been a Bethel resident for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Bethel Senior Center.

In addition to her husband and her mother, Mrs. Kowalski is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol & Wayne Anderson of New Milford and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Lounsbury, II.

Graveside funeral services will be held at St. Peter Cemetery on Friday morning at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Bruce M. Norton

Bruce M. Norton, 57, of Brookfield and Southampton, NY, husband of Trudy (Patron) Norton, died at his residence on Wednesday morning following a brief illness.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Etta (Hoffman) Norton of Manhattan; by a son, Dennis Norton of Fairfield; a sister, Joyce Eisen of Boca Raton, FL; a niece and a nephew.

Graveside funeral services will be held at the Beth El Cemetery,. Paramus, NJ on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.

David Michael Lane, Jr.

David Michael Lane, Jr., age 72, of 20 Brighton St., Candlewood Vista, Danbury, Conn., died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday June 2. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (Kelley) Lane.

He was born February 4, 1927 in Danbury, son of the late Florence (Culhane) and David M. Lane, Sr. He grew up in Danbury and attended St. Peter's school and was a graduate of Danbury High School Class of 1944. He received his B.S. from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut. He was a registered pharmacist for 25 years at Harry's Pharmacy in Danbury.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1945 and was honorably discharged from service in October 1946.

He was an avid conversationalist in the City of Danbury. He served on the Conservation Commission from 1967-1972, including various park and open space projects, including development of the Old Quarry Nature Center, The Bear Mountain Reservation and Kenosia Park.

From 1972-1977 he served as first chairman of the five town Candlewood Lake Authority and charted its course toward preserving Candlewood Lake.

From 1974-1977 he assisted in the development of the Down on the Farm facility.

In the 1980's he was instrumental in the purchase and preservation of the Tarrywile Park. He served on the Tarrywile Park Authority for five years.

He was an avid poultry breeder and exhibitor of exhibition poultry and pheasants. He was a member of the American Poultry Association and American Bantam Association. He was a member of the Swampfield Land Trust. He was a member of St. Gregory Church.

After his retirement from pharmacy, he enjoyed traveling, gardening and living at his home on Lake Candlewood.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Cathy Lane of New Milford, Jeanne Katz of Brookfield and Patty Salvatore of Danbury; one brother, George C. Lane of Danbury, and one granddaughter, Sarah Katz.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cornell Funeral Home, 247 White St., Danbury.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 5 at St. Gregory's Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to one's choice.

Joseph P. Carboni, Sr.

Joseph P. Carboni, Sr., 74, of 33 Williams St., Danbury, husband of Elaine (Reinhold) Carboni, died at Danbury Hospital on Tuesday.

He was born in Ridgefield, CT, May 12, 1925, a son of the late Dominic and Elvira (Genga) Carboni. He attended Ridgefield schools.

Prior to his illness, he worked as an Electrician for the Gary Electric Company of Ridgefield.

He moved to Danbury from Ridgefield and has been a Danbury resident for the last 49 years.

Besides his wife, Mr. Carboni is survived by 2 sons, Joseph Carboni, Jr. of Danbury and Steven Carboni of New Fairfield; 5 daughters, Eleanor Raymunt, Donna Bourque, Lorri Carboni, JO-EL Carboni and Michelle Carboni, all of Danbury; a brother, Richard Carboni of Ridgefield; a sister, Lena Savo of East Haven; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at he Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Henry J. Kwasniewski

Henry J. Kwasniewski, 86, of 90 Boardman Road in New Milford died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at New Milford Hospital.

Mr. Kwasniewski was born in Cornwall, Conn. on October 22, 1912, a son of the late Stanislaw and Bronislawa (Makowski) Kwasniewski. He lived almost his entire life in New Milford, attending local schools.

He joined the former First National stores in 1930, retiring in 1973 as manager of the dairy department in the New Milford store. Mr. Kwasniewski was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the 69th Infantry Division, and participating in the Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns.

He was a member of the Ezra Woods Post No. 31 American Legion in New Milford and the Andrew B. Mygatt Post 1672 VFW in New Milford. Mr. Kwasniewski was also a member of Housatonic Council No. 40 Knights of Columbus in New Milford.

He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford, where he had served as an usher for over 30 years. Mr. Kwasniewski had also served for many years as a constable in New Milford, from 1939 to 1960.

He is survived by two brothers, Joseph A. Kwasniewski of Worcester, Mass. and Stanley E. Kwasniewski of New Milford; three sisters, Laura M. Kwasniewski of New Milford, Lucy H. Kwasniewski of Long Island, N.Y. and Blanche K. Weldon of New Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are Monday, 9 a.m., from the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, to St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford with full military honors.

Friends may call on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home.
