Edward A. Ruopp

The death of Edward A. Ruopp, 78, of Fieldstone Road, Brookfield, occurred at his home Thursday morning. He was the husband of Elda H. Frulla Ruopp.

Born in Danbury, July 26, 1921, son of the late George and Anna Schulze Ruopp, he attended Immanuel Lutheran School and the Henry Abbott Technical School. Mr. Ruopp moved to Brookfield in 1957.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as an Aviation Radioman First Class from June 1942 to September 1945.

Employed by Southern New England Telephone Co. for 40 years, as a cable splicer and later as a foreman and supervisor, he retired in 1982.

He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and its Men's Club, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Joann and Gerald Calneni of Somers, CT, and Donna and Raymond Kohl of Westford, MA; a son, Robert Ehrhard and his wife Marilyn of Anderson, SC; five brothers, Martin Ruopp of Bridgewater, Paul and Fred Ruopp of Danbury, Ted Ruopp of Hawleyville and Ernie Ruopp of Raleigh, NC; three sisters, Helen Ruopp of Danbury, Christa Lang of Brookfield and Lillian Bardo of Danbury; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Danbury, Monday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. Daniel Wehmeier, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with military honors.

Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Sunday from 2 to 4:00 and 6 to 8:00 p.m.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the "Step of Faith" of Immanuel Lutheran Church, 26 West St., Danbury, CT 06810, or to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897-2523.

William Hawkes Jr.

William M. Hawkes, Jr., 73, of 32 Hakim Street Extension, Danbury, husband of Virginia (Hrabcsak) Hawkes, died on Wednesday evening, November 24, at the Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Hawkes was born in Danvers, MA, October 18, 1926, a son of the late William M. and Emily (Schneider) Hawkes. He moved from Danvers with his family, first settling in Hudson, NY, and later in this area.

He attended Bethel schools and resided in the Stony Hill district.

Mr. Hawkes was a retired U.S. Postal worker, having been employed at the Danbury Post Office, retiring in 1982. In later years, he was employed as a driver for Bob Sharp Motors of Wilton as well as for Sonics and Materials and the Danbury Parking Authority.

He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Air Force, as well as a Korean War veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Fall River.

Mr. Hawkes was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, the Joseph A. Treadwell Post American Legion, the Wooster Hose Fire Company, the Retired U.S. Postal Workers Association, and St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife of 31 years, he is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Fitzgerald, and her husband Jeffrey of Danbury; three brothers, Irving Hawkes of Oakville, CT, Harry Hawkes of Brookfield and Roland Hawkes of Danbury, CT; two sisters, Grace Barton of Torrington, CT, and Mary Northrop of Hudson, NY; a grandson, Logan Stephen Fitzgerald; as well as nieces and nephews.

The Divine Funeral Liturgy will take place on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 13 Pembroke Road, Danbury, with the Rev. Michael G. Popson, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Friends will be received at St. Nicholas Church on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Parastas Prayer Service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials in Mr. Hawkes' memory may be made to St. Nicholas Church Building & Development Fund.

The Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.

John W. (Red) McCauley

John W. (Red) McCauley, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Wednesday November 24, 1999 at Stamford Hospital. He was 75.

He died of complications of cancer, according to his family.

He was born April 7, 1924 in New York. He was the son of the late George and Mable Adams McCauley.

Mr. McCauley was an employee of the E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course after retiring from Holman Boiler of Danbury and Richards and Jessup Heating. He was an active member and Eucharistic Minister at St. Maurice Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of the Stamford Umpire Association, The VFW 10013 and the Stamford Elks Lodge #899. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was decorated with honors in recognition of bravery in combat and was an active member of the Marine Corps League.

He was the beloved husband of Mary (Vinnie) Troncone McCauley, former Stamford Democratic Registrar of Voters. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Mark Torpey of Bethel; a son, John J. McCauley and his wife, Paula of Greenville, S.C.; grandsons, Matthew Torpey and wife Jennifer, Seth and Dennis Torpey, Sean McCauley; and granddaughter, Erin McCauley; and a sister, Georgette Jessup of Jekyll Island, Georgia.

A Funeral Procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford on Saturday November 27, 1999 at 9:20 a.m. then to St. Maurice RC Church, 358 Glenbrook Rd., Stamford for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at St. John RC Cemetery Mausoleum, Darien.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 11 Forest St., New Canaan, CT 06840 and the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital, 34 Shelburne Rd., Stamford, CT 06902.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, November 26, 1999 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Anne L. Wiston

Anne Lysbeth Wiston, wife of Michael Wiston, President of Valley Marble and Slate Corporation, New Milford died suddenly on the first of November. She was 42 years old.

An upbeat, dynamic person, she ran a child care service for more than 17 years and had just received her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Development from Naugatuck College and was enrolled to start classes towards a Bachelor's degree in January.

Anne had been fighting the disease, Lupus, for more than 30 years and though she was frequently in severe pain, she never let it show or slow her down.

In addition to her husband, Michael, immediate survivors include a son, Michael David, 18; a daughter, Danielle Anne, 15; her parents, William and Julia (DeSerio) Kummerer; one brother; three sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

There was standing room only for the Memorial service at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses which seated more than 300 clear evidence of the many, many lives Anne Wiston touched and the enormous number of people who were her friends. Kevin Moran, Elder of the church, told of Anne's love and devotion to her family and to the church and explained her strong beliefs in life, death and in Jehovah.

Thomas E. Keenan Jr.

Thomas E. Keenan Jr., 74, of 65 Westville Avenue, Danbury, died Wednesday, November 23, 1999, at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Bette (Zinser) Keenan.

Born in Danbury April 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Katherine (Griffin) Keenan Sr. A lifetime area resident, he attended Henry Abbott Technical School.

Mr. Keenan was a US Navy Seabee Veteran, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was employed by the City of Danbury Police Department. He retired in 1990 at the rank of Lieutenant after 43 years of service.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Keenan is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Harrington of Campbell, Calif., and Kathleen Keenan of Danbury; a son, Thomas E. Keenan III and his wife, Debra of Danbury; three granddaughters, Colleen E. Cyr and her husband, Fred of Danbury; Meredith Harrington and Amanda Harrington, both of Campbell, Calif.

Funeral Services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury Friday afternoon at 12 p.m.

Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home Friday morning from 10 a.m. to the time of the service.

Friends are asked to please omit flowers. Contributions in Mr. Keenan's memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, 164 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury.

Martin E. Reed Jr.

Martin E. Reed, 77, of 602 Sebring Drive, Sebring, Florida, husband of Stella Townsend Reed, died on October 13, 1999 at the Royal Care Hospital in Avon Park, Florida.

Martin Edwin Reed Jr. was born in Danbury on May 27, 1922, a son of the late Martin Edwin Reed Sr. and Cora Adderman Reed.

He was an area resident of Danbury and Putnam Lake, N.Y. before moving to Homestead, Florida in 1972.

Mr. Reed served in the U.S. Army as a member of the highly decorated V Corps during World War II, as a Telegraph Lineman. His unit made an enviable name for themselves at the landing and breakthrough at Omaha Beach. They then sped ahead to liberate Paris and continued without pausing to be the first unit to enter Germany. He served at the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy and many others. He was a member of the first unit to meet the Russian Troops at Torgau.

He worked as a Well Driller during his early years, before joining the International Brotherhood of Laborer's Union, Local 675, where he worked throughout the New England States for many years before moving to Florida, where he continued to work as a Laborer and Union Steward on many of the major Holiday Inn Hotels and Southern Florida's Schools until his retirement in 1990, after Hurricane Andrew and relocating to Sebring, Florida.

In addition to Stella, his wife of thirty years, he is survived by two brothers, Mr. Paul Reed of Towners, N.Y. and Mr. Edward Reed of New Fairfield; and a sister, Mrs. Arlene Dailidenas of Starke, Florida; two sons, Mr. Peter Reed of Pawling, N.Y. and Mr. Richard Reed of Patterson, N.Y.; three grandchildren and six step-grandchildren of Danbury and Orem, Utah. Mr. Reed was predeceased by a sister, Carol Reed of Dykemans, N.Y.

Frances A. Kautz

Frances A. Kautz, 82, mother of Susan F. Hawkins of Danbury, died at the Danbury Hospital on Tuesday morning.

A Danbury resident for the past two and a half years, she had lived in Cheshire and Prospect, prior to moving here. In addition to her daughter, with whom she resided, she is survived by a son, Stephen R. Kautz of Crossville, Tenn.; a sister, Eileen Taylor of Missouri; five grandsons; two great grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Central Christian Church in Danbury. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, New Milford. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

Helen P. Johnson

Helen P. Johnson, 93, a retired schoolteacher and the widow of Hilbert A. Johnson Sr., formerly of Campbell Lane, Danbury, died Monday at Glen Hill Harborside Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Washington, September 17, 1906, a daughter of the late John and Hilda Svenson Pentin and had been a resident of Danbury for most of her life. She had graduated from the former Danbury Normal School with the Class of 1927, and began a career in public school education with the Danbury and later the Ridgefield School Systems, and later associated with the Brewster, N.Y. Public Schools. She had attained a Master's Degree from Danbury State Teacher's College in the 1960's.

She had been interested in numerous civic and political activities during her lifetime, and she had been a member of the Connecticut State Teacher's Association and was active in the Masonic Lodge and had belonged to Stellar Chapter #55 of the Order of Eastern Star, and had served as Past Matron of the Lodge and continued her interest on the State and National level, throughout 54 years of membership. She had belonged to the Order of the Amaranth, within the Masonic Order, and to Echo Rebekah Lodge of Danbury and was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, Hilbert A. (Herb) and Joyce Johnson of Trumbull and David P. and his wife, Donna Johnson of Glastonbury; three granddaughters, Lauren Johnson Pilgrim of Chicago, Ill., Beth Johnson of Glastonbury and Rossann Johnson Fico of Derby; and two great granddaughters, Jessica Fico and Melissa Fico, both of Derby. Besides her husband of 57 years, she had been predeceased by a brother and sister, John and Anna Pentin.

A funeral will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church, 25 West St., Danbury on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Friends will be received at The Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Johnson's memory to St. James' Episcopal Church, will be appreciated.

Thomas M. Kaczmarek

Thomas M. Kaczmarek, 53, of 141 Peaceable Street, Ridgefield died Monday at Danbury Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Margaret Winans Kaczmarek.

Mr. Kaczmarek was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on May 8, 1946, a son of Mary Sharko Kaczmarek of Ridgefield and the late William Kaczmarek. He received his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from New York Polytechnical Institute.

A Ridgefield resident for the past 21 years, Mr. Kaczmarek was a previous resident of Sayreville, N.J. He had been a consultant with Micro Banking Automation of Atlanta for the past 5 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield.

Besides his wife and mother, survivors include two sons: Christopher B. Kaczmarek of Danbury and Stephen M. Kaczmarek of Ridgefield. One grandson: Jordan C. Kaczmarek of Danbury. One sister: Natalie Liakowski of Parlin, N.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends will be received on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Danbury Hospital Development Fund, 24 Hospital Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.

Doris Buchan Sternberg

Doris Buchan Sternberg, a resident of Fairfield County for seventy five years, died Friday, November 19, 1999 in St. Vincent's Medical Center.

A daughter of James Buchan and Beulah Gates, she was born in Ottawa, Canada on June 8, 1908. The family moved to Stamford where Doris graduated from the Glen Eden School. She later matriculated at Katherine Gibbs in New York City. She was a medical secretary in Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in the 1920's. She married Huot W. Sternberg of Meriden in 1931 and resided in Westport where she was active musically in the Connecticut Chorale, the South Shore Music Club and the choir at Christ and Holy Trinity Church.

She was a longtime active member of the Westport Women's Club, the Republican Party and served on the Westport Town Planning Commission. In 1948, the family moved to Fairfield where she was an active member of Brooklawn Country Club, Associated Charities of Bridgeport, the House and Garden Club of Greater Bridgeport, the Contemporary Club and a board member of the Burroughs Home for the Elderly, the Visiting Nurses Association and Friends of Bridgeport Symphony. For the

past ten years she has been a resident of Thirty Thirty Park, Bridgeport.

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia S. Schein of State College, Pa. and Joan S. Keddy of Ridgefield; a sister, Nancy Conrad Grimaldi of Danbury; three grandsons; two granddaughters; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Old Post Rd., Fairfield, where a Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, November 27, 1999 at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Ben Brockman, Rector, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Music Fund at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Rd., Fairfield, CT 06430 for the enhancement of special music programming. The Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Trumbull is in charge of arrangements.
