Harold Smith Carpenter

Harold Smith Carpenter, 96, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Stamford, Conn., father of John Lyman Carpenter of Brookfield, died May 18, 1999.

He was born in Stamford on May 22, 1902, son of Merritt Bosworth Carpenter and Louise Hoyt Smith. His family had been early settlers in Stamford. He graduated from King's School in Stamford in 1921 and from Pratt Institute of Technology in New York in 1923.

Mr. Carpenter taught industrial arts in Rogers Junior High School in Stamford, retiring in 1962. After retiring, he worked as a supervisor of woodworking at Opportunity Center in Wilmington, Del. Mr. Carpenter lived in Stamford until 1962, in Wilmington, Del. from 1962 to 1968, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. from 1968 to 1996, and in Savannah, Ga. from 1996.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Wilson Carpenter, who died of a stroke in 1986 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Mr. Carpenter was baptized and married in the First Congregational Church of Stamford, Conn., where he served as clerk of the Prudential Committee. In Glens Falls, he served as deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. In Savannah, he was a member of the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 75 years. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1945. He served various functions in the Alfred Dater Council in Connecticut, the Delmarva Council in Delaware and the Three Rivers Council in New York.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family in Savannah, Ga., Glens Falls, N.Y. and Stamford, Conn. Interment will be in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boy Scouts of America, the First Congregational Church of Stamford, Conn., the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, N.Y. or the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church of Savannah, Ga.

Leonard Gerald Goodbou Jr.

Leonard Gerald Goodbou Jr., 38, of 49 Candlewood Mountain Road, New Milford died Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at his home.

Mr. Goodbou was born in Fort Kent, Maine on March 24, 1961, a son of Leonard and Arlene (Smart) Goodbou. He had lived in New Milford since 1963 and had been a self-employed excavating contractor.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Crystal K. Goodbou of New Milford, and three sisters, Amy M. Thibodeau, Shelley Kilian and Laurel Martin, all of New Milford. He had been predeceased by three brothers, Gary Goodbou, Kelly Goodbou and David Goodbou.

Funeral services are on Monday, 11 a.m., in the Bible Baptist Church in New Milford. Interment is to be announced.

Friends may call on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.

Eleanor Ganse Stevenson

Eleanor Ganse Stevenson, age 89, formerly of South Lane in Redding Ridge, Conn., passed away peacefully on April 22, 1999 at the Bethel Health Care Center.

For over 60 years, she was the devoted wife of the late Robert D. Stevenson Sr. Mr. Stevenson, a teacher, formerly with the Burnham School in Bridgewater, Conn., retired from the Danbury school system in 1969.

Mrs. Stevenson was born in Salt Point, N.Y. on July 13, 1909, the only child of the late Victor T. and Nina F. Ganse.

In 1931, near the top of her class, she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Syracuse, becoming a Registered Nurse with cap and cape. Syracuse University is also where she met her future husband, marrying after graduation.

Mrs. Stevenson worked for the Barden Corp., where she was known as Ellie, retiring in 1969.

Her survivors include son Robert D. Stevenson Jr. and his wife Nicky of Bethel, daughter Linda S. Davison and her husband David of Bridgewater, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many cousins.

A service of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 22, 1999, 3 p.m., at the Crum Elbow Cemetery, Hyde Park, N.Y.

Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Arrangements are by the Tomlinson Homestead in Danbury.

Dr. Felix V. Cavaliere

Dr. Felix V. Cavaliere died on May 14, 1999 at the Bethel Healthcare in Bethel, Conn. He was 89 years old. Dr. Cavaliere was born on October 1, 1909 in New York City to Felix and Frances Greco Cavaliere. He attended public schools in the Bronx and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science from Columbia University, and his D.D.S. from Temple University in Philadelphia. He also did postgraduate work at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the Army, attaining the rank of captain. Dr. Cavaliere was a resident of Pelham Manor, N.Y. from 1940 to 1987, when he moved to Danbury, Conn. Dr. Cavaliere is survived by a son, Felix A. Cavaliere of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Frances Bianchini of Danbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His loving wife, Laura DiGiorgi Cavaliere, predeceased him in 1957. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Pelham Manor,

N.Y. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the McGrath Funeral Home in Bronxville, N.Y.Katharine Seabury

Katharine (Naboriny) Seabury, 85, of the Bull's Bridge section of Kent died Monday, May 17, 1999 at Sharon Hospital. She was the wife of Arthur Seabury.

Mrs. Seabury was born in Kent on January 31, 1914. She lived her entire life in the town she loved. She and her husband celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on April 27, 1999. Mrs. Seabury was a lifelong communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Kent.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Margaret Ann of Sharon, Conn.; a sister, Sophie N. Page of Kent; several nieces and nephews and her beloved Ginger.

Funeral services are on Thursday, 10 a.m., in Sacred Heart Church in Kent with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Kent. There are no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church or to the Kent Ambulance c/o Kent Fire Dept., Kent, CT 06757.

Arrangements are by the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.

Edward vanZandt Beverly

Edward "Van" vanZandt Beverly, 72, of 17 Halpin Lane in Ridgefield died Saturday, May 15, 1999 in Danbury after a brief illness.

Mr. Beverly was born in Chicago on April 8, 1927, a son of the late James Earle and Hildred Bean Beverly. He grew up in the Old Town section of Chicago and served with the U.S. Marines during World War II.

Mr. Beverly studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he was trained in the art of painting. He worked for 12 years with the NBC Nightly News as a graphic artist until he started his own business.

A Ridgefield resident for the past 20 years, Mr. Beverly was active with the Marine Corps League and their "Toys for Tots" program, which became one of his passions. He was an avid reader and one of W.A. Mozart's biggest fans.

Survivors include his former wife, Myra Gray Beverly of Ridgefield; one son, Jason of Naugatuck; two daughters, Vanessa of New York City and Carole of Olympia, Wash.; and two brothers, James of Urbana, Ill. and Richard of Michigan.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, noon, at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield with the Rev. Michael Madden officiating.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service on Saturday morning at the funeral home.

Marliek C.J. Moore Jr.

Marliek C.J. Moore Jr., infant son of Marliek C.J. Moore Sr. and Mrs. Maya Peterson of Danbury, Conn., died on May 15, 1999 at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital.

He was born on May 5, 1999 at Danbury Hospital in Danbury as a member of natural triplets.

Besides his parents, his survivors include his remaining triplet sisters, Marlene Mae Moore and Miesha Anne Moore, and sister Joenaya and brothers Martel, Tamel, Alex and Jamar.

His paternal grandparents are Mrs. Sandra Craig of Danbury and Mr. Terry Purvis of Greenville, N.C.

His paternal step-grandfather is Mr. David Craig of Danbury.

His paternal great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James Redfearn of Danbury.

Marliek Jr. was predeceased by his great-grandfather, Mr. Ike Moore Jr.

His paternal great-great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Luther McKinnon of Rocky Mount, N.C.

His maternal great-great-grandmother is Mary Purvis of Robinsonville, N.C.

His maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Walker of Springfield, Mass.

His maternal great-grandmother is Mrs. Phoebe Grimes of Danbury.

Other survivors include many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Graveside and interment services are to be held on Saturday, 11 a.m., at Wooster Cemetery in Danbury.

Services are to be conducted by Dr. Rev. Aaron B. Samuels of the New Hope Baptist Church in Danbury.

Arrangements are by The Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main St. in Danbury.

Agnes Smith

Agnes O'Malley Smith, 95, of 75 Crescent Drive, Ridgefield, wife of the late Vincent A. Smith, died on Sunday morning at her residence.

Mrs. Smith was born in the Bronx, New York, March 27, 1904, a daughter of the late George and Delia O'Malley. She attended New York schools and was a retired chief telephone operator for the New York Telephone Company.

A resident of Ridgefield since 1934 coming from Peekskill, New York, she was a member of St. Mary's Church, president of St. Mary's Rosary Society and a past president of the former Catholic Golden Agers of St. Mary's. She was a member of the Columbietts of the Marquette Council Knights of Columbus of Ridgefield and a past state president of the Connecticut Council of Columbietts. She was a member of the Ridgefield O.W.L.S., the Meals on Wheels program and the Help thy Neighbor Program.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth M. McManus and son-in-law, Mark D. McManus, both of Ridgefield, three grandchildren, Mary Extance, Michael Extance, and Colleen McManus, all of Ridgefield, and several nieces and nephews, including, Rose Rotchford, Veronica Marsico, Rita Smith, Raymond Smith and Eileen Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.

Friends will be received in the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Contributions in Mrs. Smith's memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 90 East Ridge, Ridgefield, or to the Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 30 West St., Danbury.

Harry Shrack

Harry William Shrack, 67, of 2089 Dale Ave., Lincolnton, N.C., died May 14, 1999, at the Frye Medical Center.

Mr. Shrack was born in New Milford Dec. 1, 1931, a son of Clarence and Daisy Coville Shrack. He was a retired IBM employee and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Kolczynski Shrack; a son, William Shrack of Vermont; a daughter, Debbie Smith of Tennessee; three step-daughters, Barbara Hopkins of Dallas, N.C., Patricia Fea of Denver, N.C., and Cindy Rose of Ohio; a stepson, Michael Kolczynski of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a niece, Marie Millican of Lincolnton, N.C.

There will be no memorial service.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home, 334 2nd St., N.W., Hickory, N.C., 28601 is in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys F. St. Pierre

Gladys Farrah St. Pierre, of 3 Sixth Street, Danbury, CT, wife of Roger St. Pierre, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, May 16, 1999, at the Atlantic City Medical Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey after being stricken ill.

Gladys St. Pierre was born in Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter of the late Fred and Eva (Esper) Farrah. As an infant, she relocated with her family to Worcester, MA, where she attended local schools and graduated from Worcester High School.

A resident of Danbury since 1947 coming from Worcester, she was a former employee of the Barden Corporation.

She was a member of St. Ann's Melkite Greek Catholic Church of Danbury.

In addition to her husband of 34 years, she is survived by a daughter, Pamela St. Pierre, two sisters, Viola Cesca and Janet Farrah, and a brother, Alfred "Buddy" Farrah, all of Danbury, an aunt, Agnes Esper, and an uncle, George S. Esper, both of Worcester, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The Rite of Burial will take place on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Ann's Melkite Green Catholic Church, 181 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury, with the Rev. Fr. Basil R.A. Parent, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Friends will be received in St. Ann's Church on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory may be made to St. Ann's Church Building Fund.

The Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury, is in charge of the arrangements.
