William A. Koment

William A. Koment, 89, of Nunnawauk Meadows, Newtown, father of Mrs. Sandra J. Joudy of Brookfield, died on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at the Bethel Healthcare Center in Bethel.

Mr. Koment was the husband of the late Marguerite (Fink) Koment.

He was born in Bridgeport, Conn. on March 3, 1910, a son of Alexander and Emily Koment.

He attended Bridgeport schools and was a carpenter by trade. Mr. Koment was a carpenter foreman at the Bridgeport Hospital, retiring in 1970 after 27 years of service.

He was a former member of the Bridgeport Carpenter's Union.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his son-in-law, Raymond D. Joudy, also of Brookfield; a son, Dr. Roger W. Koment of Burbank, S.D., and three grandchildren, Doreen Helstern, Leonard Joudy and Scott Joudy.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, 11 a.m., in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury with Pastor Richard J. DeMoss of the Colonial Hills Baptist Church of Danbury officiating.

Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport.

Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Veronica M. Loughlin

Veronica M. Loughlin, age 82, wife of the late Timothy J. Loughlin of 42 Elizabeth Circle, Newtown died Wednesday May 5, 1999 at her home.

Mrs. Loughlin was born in New York City Dec. 1, 1919 a daughter of John C. and Mary (Markey) Giesi. She had been a resident of Newtown for the past 44 years. Mrs. Loughlin was a communicant and active in parish affairs at St. Rose of Lima Church. She was a volunteer Patient Representative at Danbury Hospital. Mrs. Loughlin was a member of the Newtown Womens Club and a driver for Newtown Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Loughlin is survived by two daughters, Veronica Singel of Saranac Lake, N.Y. and Deidre Macho of Brookfield and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 8:30 a.m. from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown and at 9 am in St. Rose Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to p.m.

Charles C. Green

The death of Charles C. Green, 85, of Olive St., Danbury, occurred at the Glen Hill Convalescent Hospital, Tuesday. He was the husband of Margaret Purdy Green. Born in Middletown, N.Y., he was the son of Fred and Lucy Green and received his education in Middletown Schools. He lived in New Jersey prior to moving to Danbury in 1957.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army.

He was employed as an Operating Engineer for the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local #478 as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 43 years retiring in 1979. He had worked on various bridges, tunnels and highways both in this country and overseas. He also worked on the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bridge as a diver.

Following his retirement, he worked for 10 years for Green Security in Danbury and later for the City of Danbury as a crossing guard for South Street School and St. Joseph's School for 10 years working until age 82. Besides his Union he was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

Besides his wife he is survived by two stepsons, David Taylor of Carmel, N.Y. and George Taylor of Amenia, N.Y., a stepdaughter, Lynn Dyer of Sussex, New Jersey, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private. Cremation will follow at the convenience of the family.

The Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., is in charge of arrangements.

Carmello DeLucia

Carmello DeLucia known as John of Italy, age 55, of Brookfield Road, Danbury, died May 5, 1999 at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. DeLucia was born in Italy, Nov. 7, 1943, a son of the late Pietro and Maddalena (Nuzzo) DeLucia.

Educated in Italy, he graduated from Hair Stylist School in Naples, Italy.

Mr. DeLucia served in the Italian Army.

He was a well-known barber and hair stylist and owned and operated John of Italy at 68 South St., Danbury for 20 years until his recent retirement.

Mr. DeLucia immigrated from Italy to West Haven, Conn., in 1970 and then moved to the greater Danbury area.

He was a member of the Amerigo Vespucci Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Vincent DeLucia of Danbury; three brothers, Vincent DeLucia and his wife Angela of Danbury, Pasquale DeLucia of West Haven, Conn., and Andrea DeLucia of North Carolina; five sisters, Elena DeLucia and Giuseppina DeLucia, both of West Haven, and Maria DeLucia, Rosalia Nuzzo, and Teresa Guida, all of Italy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Raymond W. Ward

Raymond W. Ward, age 81, of Brewster, New York, husband of Frances (Pinckney) Ward, died Wednesday May 5, 1999 at the Bethel Health Care Center, Bethel, Conn., after a long illness.

He was born March 24, 1918 in Morrisville, Vt., the son of Frank and Elzina Glee (Merriam) Ward. He attended People Academy in Morrisville.

Mr. Ward had lived in Brewster for over 60 years and prior to that lived in Morrisville. He was the foreman/manager for the Benedict Farms in Brewster and after his retirement was the landfill operator for the Town of Southeast for 10 years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brewster where he and his wife were married on September 14, 1941. He was also a member of the Brewster Grange.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Ward is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Lavollo of Brewster, N.Y., one son, Peter Ward of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., two brothers, Donald Ward of Morrisville, Vt. and Frank Ward Jr. of Elmore, Vt., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Paul, a brother Rudolph and a sister Christabel Harrigan.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY with the Rev. Raymond Lightcap officiating.

Interment will be in Raymond Hill Cemetery, Carmel, N.Y. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Putnam Hospital Center, Stoneleigh Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512.

John G. Atwood

John G. Atwood, 73, of Redding, died at home yesterday of pancreatic cancer.

Born April 27, 1926, in Manhattan, he was the son of Adela Girdner Atwood and Kimball C. Atwood Jr.

Mr. Atwood attended Lincoln School in New York, graduated from Lawrenceville School in 1943, and received undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering from Columbia University, spanning the years 1943 through 1948.

An employee of the Perkin-Elmer Corporation for 50 years, Mr. Atwood's activities were integral to the success of the company's scientific instrumentation business. He served as Vice President and Director of Research and Development, and most recently as a Senior Scientist. During his tenure at Perkin-Elmer he was awarded 31 patents, the most recent of which was issued last June.

A Redding resident for 44 years, Mr. Atwood served on the Board of Selectmen for 10 years. His strong commitment to preserving the rural quality of Redding is a lasting legacy to his community.

He is survived by his wife, Judith, a son, John Atwood Jr. of Nevada, a daughter Sarah Atwood, also of Redding, and a daughter, Susan Atwood-Stone, of Vermont.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of John Atwood may be made to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, Inc., 30 West Street, Danbury, Connecticut 06810.

Anna P. DiOrio

Anna P. DiOrio, age 87, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Glen Hill Convalescent Center in Danbury.

Mrs. DiOrio, the wife of the late Ernest J. DiOrio, was born in Portage, Pa., on August 17, 1911, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Novotny) Paul. She attended schools in Portage.

Before moving to Danbury in 1995, Mrs. DiOrio had been a Bethel resident for 35 years and devoted her life to her family. She had been a member of the Church of St. Mary in Bethel.

Mrs. DiOrio is survived by a son, Michael P. DiOrio of Milwaukee, Wis.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and John Bielaczyc of Danbury; a grandson and his wife, Peter and Shannon Bielaczyc of Westerly, R.I.; a granddaughter, Nora Bielaczyc of Hoboken, N.J.; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Pearl Paul of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Bethel on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel.

There are no calling hours. The Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, is handling arrangements.

Helen S. Butlein

Helen Butlein, a longtime resident of Danbury, Connecticut and Delray Beach, Fla., died Saturday, May 1, 1999 at Glen Cove Hospital, Glen Cove, N.Y., after suffering a massive stroke.

Born February 10, 1916 in New York City, she was the daughter of Rose and Nathan Stein. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Samuel Butlein, in 1991.

For many years she worked with her husband building a succession of stationery stores in the New York area. From 1953 to 1970 they operated Butlein's Stationery Store in Danbury. In 1979, she and her husband retired to Delray Beach.

She is survived by two brothers, Morris Stein of Cliffside Park, N.J., and Lester Stein of Albany, N.Y.; four children, Marc Butlein of Weston, Conn., Eric Butlein of Milwaukee, Wisc., Elaine Kleinmann of Huntington, N.Y., and Robin Yanes of Smithtown, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the Joint Distribution Committee, Kosovo Relief, 711 Third Ave. 10th Floor, New York, NY 10017.

Timothy F. McMahon

Timothy F. McMahon, age 66, died May 3, 1999 at the Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley J. Raynor McMahon and lived at 49 Prange Road in Brookfield.

Mr. McMahon was born in Norwalk, Conn. on September 28, 1932, son of the late Donald P. and Rosemary Stark McMahon. He graduated from Fairfield Prep and attended Fairfield University.

He was a newspaper typesetter for 37 years. Mr. McMahon settled in Brookfield 19 years ago and was a member of St. Marguerite Bougeoys Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert P. Eaton and David A. Eaton, both of Branford, Conn., and John J. Eaton of Woodbury, Conn.; two daughters, Katherine I. McMahon-Rogers of Brookfield and Sandra J. White of Meriden, Conn.; two sisters, Dorothea M. Dreher of Branford and Rosemary E. Noonan of New Milford; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10 a.m., at St. Marguerite Church in Brookfield. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.
