Anthony J. Kobus
Anthony J. Kobus of Middletown passed away peacefully after a long illness Monday, Aug. 13, at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He was 72.

Mr. Kobus was the son of the late B. Paul and Gertrude M. Kobus.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y..

Mr. Kobus was a graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory School and of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he met Kathleen Cruchley, who became his wife of nearly 50 years.

He proudly served his country in the Army Reserves from 1956 to 1963.

In 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Kobus brought their family to Delaware. He was employed by Hercules, Inc., in the advertising department from 1960 until 1981. In 1983, he became vice president of sales for Display Arts Studios until his retirement in 1999.

He enjoyed volunteer activities for many community organizations, traveling, photography and being with family and friends. He was always quick with a joke or entertaining story.

Mr. Kobus was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Wilmington and St. Joseph s Parish in Middletown, where he and his wife were married in 1957. He was a member of the Middletown-Odessa Rotary Club, The Men of Malvern, served as volunteer editor of the Springmill Community Newsletter, chairman of the capital campaign for the M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Board of Directors of Associated Community Talents, Inc.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Kobus; and his in-laws, Dr. and Mrs. Allan R. Cruchley.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Kevin and Lisa Kobus and Mark A. and Marlene Kobus; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary (Kobus) and Philip Carrasco and Karen and Daniel Kegelman; and eight grandchildren, Samuel, Anne, Christopher, Sara, Jenna, Conner, Elisabeth and Nina.

Friends may call Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at Immaculate Heart of Mary, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington.

Burial will be in Old Bohemia Cemetery, Warwick, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center Building Fund, 300 S. Scott St., Middletown, DE 19709.

Earl Etherington Jones II
Earl Etherington Jones II of Bear went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Etherington served his country proudly in World War II. He was a bombardier navigator, who trained other young men in the Army Air Corp.

He was a native of Delaware and a millwright machinist by trade. He worked for the DuPont Company until his retirement in 1984.

He loved children and always had a pocket full of candy for them. He was considered a man of all trades by those who knew him, as he built several homes, including his own, in Bear.

Mr. Etherington served his church family at Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church and was much loved by the congregation. He was recently honored by receiving a plaque for Deacon Emeritus. Until his recent illness, he was always found by the door greeting people.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Virginia Bessie Jones; his wife of 59 years, Gladys M. (Gooden) Jones; a grandson, Matthew Jones; a sister, Marion; his adopted brother, Phillip Jones; three sons and a three daughters-in-law, Earl E. III and Andrea Jones of Everett, Wash., Edward and Patricia Jones of New Castle and Kenneth and Michelle Jones of Bear; a daughter and a son-in-law, Kathryn and Bruce Sturgeon of Bear; eight grandchildren, Kimberly, Eric, Tara, Kandra, Alicia, Eddie, Jennifer and Melanie; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A visitation was held Aug. 11 in the Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church, Bear.

Burial was private.

William F. Bill Binck

William F. Binck of Delaware City died Saturday, August 11, 2001 at home. He was 50.

Mr. Binck was born in Philadelphia, Pa., was a 1969 graduate of Salesianum School and attended college in Alabama, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was a diver, having worked for Underwater Technics, and later, for Air Products.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter J. and Marie M. Binck and a brother, Dr. Walter J. Binck.

He is survived by a sister, Nancy Press and her husband, David; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Binck of Okla.; and five nieces and nephews.

Services were Aug. 14 at St. Mary of Assumption Church, Hockessin.

Interment was in Cathedral Cemetery.

In place of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Limen House, 600 W. 10th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Ethel Alice Carrow

Ethel Alice Carrow of Clayton died Monday, August 13, 2001 at Westminister Village, Dover. She was 87.

Mrs. Carrow was born in Townsend and attended Townsend and Middletown schools. As a young girl she worked in her parents General Store. In the 1960s she worked as a receptionist at the Delaware Home and Hospital in Smyrna for several years.

She is survived by a daughter, Sherrill Ann Weigle of Dover; a son, William B. Carrow and his wife, Kim, of Dover; six grandchildren; a great grandchild; a niece and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel Weigle; her second husband, Harold J. Carrow, Jr.; her mother, Mrs. Ethel O. Reynolds, early 1970s; and a brother, Roland R. Reynolds, Jr., in 1997.

Services will be held on Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown. Friends may call one hour before the services.

Burial will be in Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Carole W. Chester

Carole W. Chester of Middletown died suddenly Friday, August 10, 2001 at home. She was 63.

Mrs. Chester worked for New Castle County as a Land Use Administrator. She retired July 1, 2001 after 28 years of service. She was a former member and treasurer of AFASCME Local 1607 for 24 years. She enjoyed traveling, reading and vacationing at the beach near Chincoteague, Va.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, James L. Chester; a sister, Patty W. Powell and her husband, Charles, of Middletown; two sisters-in-law, Barbara C. Walser and her husband, Jerry, of Tulsa, Okla. and Catherine C. Nichols and her husband, James, of Satellite Beach, Fla.; a nephew, Jeffrey W. Powell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Massey, Md.; two great nephews, Charles and Matthew Powell, both of Massey, Md.; and her beloved dog, Tipper.

Services were held Aug. 14 in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Chesapeake City, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or to the Arthritis Foundation.

George L. Larry Hartnett

George L. Hartnett of Smyrna died Monday, August 6, 2001 at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 60.

He was born in Wilmington, and was employed by Chrysler Corp., Newark, for many years.

Mr. Hartnett enjoyed C.B. radio and collecting miniature lighthouses.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Norma J. Hartnett; three sons, George L. Hartnett, II of Dover, Matthew A. Hartnett of Smyrna and Marcus Hartnett of Fla.; two daughters, Nadine R. Pepper of Smyrna and Ciara E. Parson of Texas; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 9 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.

Interment was in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Charlotte Ann Bailey Hutsell

Charlotte Ann Bailey Hutsell of Clayton died Monday, August 6, 2001 at the Silver Lake Nursing Center, Dover. She was 76.

Mrs. Hutsell was born Aug. 7, 1924, the daughter of the late Arthur P. and Lelia Burke Bailey in Cecilton, Md. She was a member of the VFW Post 8801 Ladies Auxiliary, where she held the position of Chaplain for the Auxiliary and Poppy Lady for the Post. She organized Bingo for the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna and helped with school flag education programs in schools in Clayton and Smyrna. Mrs. Hutsell was also a member of Ewell s St. Paul United Methodist Church, Clayton. She enjoyed playing baseball in her earlier years and watching the Orioles and Dallas Cowboys play in her later years.

She is survived by her husband, Carson N. Hutsell; three brothers, Francis Bailey of New Castle, Edgar Bailey of Warwick, Md. and Earl L. Bailey of Cecilton, Md.; three sisters, Emily Schrader of Newark, Elizabeth B. Watkins of Woodbridge, Va. and Rebecca Nickerson of Earleville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Aug. 10 at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Cecilton, Md.

Interment was in Cecilton Cemetery, Cecilton, Md.

Margaret M. Matthews

Margaret M. Matthews of Wilmington died Monday, August 6, 2001 in the Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 78.

Mrs. Matthews was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Murphy and the wife of the late Harrison W. Matthews.

She is survived by three children, John L. Matthews of Wilmington, James Matthews, with whom she lived, and Susanne Rodenheiser and her husband, David, of Townsend; two sisters, Geraldine Kelly and Eleanor Frarer, both of Wilmington; and seven grandchildren.

Services were Aug. 10 at Doherty Funeral Home, Wilmington.

Burial was in All Saints Cemetery.

Dorothy E. Owens

Dorothy E. (nee Buzby) Owens of Mount Laurel, N.J. died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at home. She was 86.

Mrs. Owens was born in Bridgeton, N.J. and lived in Salem, N.J. before moving to Mount Laurel 16 years ago. She worked as a bookkeeper for 23 years at Owens Body Shop in Salem, N.J., retiring in 1972. She was a communicant of Saint John Neumann R.C. Church in Mount Laurel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Owens, in 1984.

She is survived by two sons, John E. Owens of Middletown and Harry S. Owens of Mount Laurel, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Services were Aug. 13 at Mount Laurel Home for Funerals, Mount Laurel, N.J.

Interment was in St. Mary s Cemetery, Bridgeton, N.J.

Donald 'Slim' Patchett

Donald Patchett of Smyrna died on Sunday, July 29, 2001. He was 48.

Mr. Patchett was employed with R.E.C. Bus Service, Clayton, for more than two years. He was also a member of Solid Rock Church, Dover.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne Albert, Sr. and Esther Patchett.

He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah; and a son, Michael Patchett, at home; two grandchildren, Shaune Michelle and Jonathan David; and a brother, Wayne Albert Patchett, Jr. of Texas.

Services and burial were Aug. 3 at Lake View Cemetery, Port Clinton, Ohio.

Mark H. Price

Mark H. Price of Middletown died Friday, August 3, 2001. He was 42.

Mr. Price worked as a HVAC mechanic for area companies for many years. He enjoyed surf fishing and motorcycling. Mr. Price was a graduate of A.I. DuPont High School.

He is survived by his wife, Nina V. Price ; a daughter, Melinda Lee Price of New Castle; a stepson, Cameron Taylor of Middletown; his father, Ernest E. Price , Jr. of Centerville; and two brothers, Edmund E. Price of White Bear Lake, Minn. and Steven S. Price of New Canaan, Conn.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha W. Price .

Services were held Aug. 10 at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, Newark.

Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Walter V. Reese

Walter V. Reese of New Holland, Pa., formerly of Smyrna and Philadelphia, Pa., died Thursday, August 2, 2001. He was 83.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Walter G. and Bertha Von Nieda Reese.

Mr. Reese was an army veteran of World War II, serving as a 1st Sergeant in Europe. He was employed as a machinist for Keebler Biscuit and as a purchasing agent for Tasty Baking Co., both of Philadelphia, Pa. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Smyrna, where he was active in the Methodist Men s Group, a service organization within the church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Helen C. Reese, in 1994.

He is survived by a daughter, Helen Fanus and her husband, Larry, of Gap, Pa.; a brother, Ralph Reese of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandsons, Timothy, Gregory and Jeffrey Fanus, all of Gap, Pa.

Services were held Aug. 7 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Smyrna.

Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

William L. Sipe

William L. Sipe of Townsend, formerly of York, Pa., died Saturday, August 4, 2001 in Wilmington. He was 39.

He is survived by his parents, Leroy Orr and Carol A. (Sipe) Rice, both of York, Pa.; a companion, Angel Pizarro of Townsend; three brothers; and two sisters.

Services were Aug. 10 at Cathedral of Praise and Worship, York, Pa.

Burial was in Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

Margaret Peggy (Pealer) Swank

Margaret (Pealer) Swank, formerly of Brookside and Florida, died Friday, August 10, 2001 after a long illness. She was 79.

She was born in Elmira, N.Y., the daughter of the late Elias Benson and Anna Marguerite Hughes Pealer. Mrs. Swank had a home hair salon and also worked in the food service department at the University of Delaware. She was a member of St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church in Brookside and was active in the Ladies Ruth Circle, Order of Eastern Star and Demolay. While residing in Fla., she was a member of the Sunshine Baptist Church and Treasurer of the Golden Gate Church Association. She enjoyed bowling, bike riding, swimming, shuffle board, reading, crocheting, pinochle and visits from her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, William W. Swank, in 1990; a sister, Ruth Schultz; and two brothers, Nevin Pealer and Grant Pealer.

She is survived by three sons, William Swank and James Swank, both of Middletown and Craig Swank of Bear.; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; four sisters, Betty Norsen of Clifton Springs, N.Y., Irene Bray of Mountaintop, Pa., Jolina Gotham of Lakeland, Fla. and Nancy Hall of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and two brothers, E.B. Pealer of Modesto, Calif. and Daniel Pealer of Dunnellon, Fla.

Services were Aug. 15 at the Christ United Methodist Church, Mountaintop, Pa.

Interment was in Albert Cemetery, Mountaintop.
