Margaret Mae Yowell
Margaret Mae Yowell, of Delaware City, died on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Shady Grove Hospital, Rockville, Md. She was 63.

Born in Princeton, W.V., on July 29, 1939, Mrs. Yowell was the daughter of the late David C. and Thelma Jeannette (Lyons) Yowell. She was recently retired from the Governor Bacon Health Center after more than 30 years of service.

Mrs. Yowell was the founder of the Airport Speedway Ladies Auxiliary in New Castle and was involved with many other sport organizations, including Delaware City youth baseball, St. Peter's wrestling, Tyrant wrestling, and Delaware Monarch baseball.

She was preceded in death by a son, Randy A. Havens.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Mrs. Yowell is survived by her husband of 20 years, William J. Yowell; children, Dennis Havens and his wife, Beverly; Mary Laird and her husband, Dave; Bill Yowell and his wife, Temple; Robert Havens and his wife, Caroline; Maggie Jones; Anthony Havens and his wife, Corrine; Victor Havens; Troy Havens and his partner, Tim Gibbs; and Tricia Yowell and her husband, Ron Meadowcroft; brother, Melvin Akers; sister, Charlotte Havens; and 18 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 27, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn Road, Port Penn. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 26 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchman's Road, Newark, DE, 19713.

Willard L. Massey, Sr.

Willard L. Massey, Sr. of Smyrna, formerly of Odessa, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at home surrounded by family. He was 69.

Mr. Massey retired from the City of Newark in 1997 after 18 years of service. He also owned and operated Massey Lawn Service, which his son continues to operate. He enjoyed going to horse races in his spare time.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra L. Massey; a son, Willard L. Skeeter Massey, Jr. of Townsend; two daughters, Dawn Meadwell and Darla Martine, both of Townsend; and seven grandchildren, Kimberly, Carl, Mark, Fawn, Kellie, Justin and Chelsea.

Services were held March 22 at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Middletown.

Interment was in Townsend cemetery.

Robert Custance Curtiss

Robert Custance Curtiss of Wilmington died Friday, March 22, 2002. He was 72.

Mr. Curtiss was a sales promotion manager for the Gannett News Papers for 40 years, retiring in 1989. He was a musician in his spare time playing the drums in many groups and he was an amateur artist. Mr. Curtiss was an avid comic collector, both in newspaper and books. He was also a former member of the Wilmington Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Esther B. Curtiss; three sons, Robert M. of Pine Hill, N.Y., Christopher T. of Chicago, Ill. And James C. of Townsend; a daughter, Anne Marie McKevitt of Warwick, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.

Services were held March 27 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Wilmington.

Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Arrangements by McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, Talleyville.

Robert G. Likens

Robert G. Likens of Magnolia died Friday, March 22, 2002 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 55.

Mr. Likens was born May 26, 1946 in Radford, Va. to Robert and Helen (Lowman) Likens. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad until his death. He had an interest in model trains and classic cars and was a member of the Del-Rods Classic Car Club.

He was a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, pastoral care leader and musician all at the Church of God of Prophecy in Woodside.

He was preceded in death by his father.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joanna Price Likens; three sons, Robert G. Likens, Jr. (Stephanie Johnson) of Magnolia, Brian T. Likens of Delaware City and William E. Likens (Kristen) of Camden/Wyoming; a sister, Judy L. Flinchum of Dublin, Va.; many sisters, nieces, nephews and family.

Services were held March 26 at Trader Funeral Home, Dover.

Interment was in Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover.

James Harry Heverin

James Harry Heverin of Townsend died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at home. He was 73.

Mr. Heverin was a retired blacksmith and horseman.

He is survived by his former wife of 36 years, Virginia; a daughter, Jeannie Johnson (Jerry) of Smyrna; three sons, James H., Jr. (Jan) of Bear, Brantley B. (Vickie) and Glenn M. (Terri), both of Townsend; five brothers, Carroll of Fla., Edward of Frederica, Walter of Greensboro, Md., Franklin of Suddlerville, Md. and Ralph of Smyrna; two sisters, Betty McNatt and Daisy Bailey, both of Smyrna; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 25 at the Daniels and Hutchinson Funeral Home, Middletown.

Interment was in the Union Church Cemetery, Townsend.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.

Diane Lee Walley

Diane Lee Walley of New Castle died Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 32.

She was born in Wilmington and was the office manager for Communication Specialists in Delaware City.

Miss Walley is survived by her parents, Dale A. and Eileen C. Walley of New Castle; a sister, Michele W. Tucker (Shawn) of New Castle; and a niece, Madison A. Tucker.

Services were held March 27 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle.

Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ursuline Academy Lower School Library Fund, 1106 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806.

LaVerna A. Paige

LaVerna A. Paige of Stanton died Monday, March 18, 2002. She was 73.

Mrs. Paige, who was a homemaker, was active in local politics and community services.

She is survived by six children, Ellen L. Riston of W.Va., LaVerna B. Cerpa of Fla., Debra K. Farmer of Newark, William Foster Paige, Jr. of Middletown, Helen L. Hobbs of Wilmington and Donald J. Paige of Stanton; two brothers; four sisters; 19 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, William Foster Paige, Sr., in 1994.

Services were held March 22 at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, Newport.

Interment was in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Minquadale, New Castle.

Florence Evelyn Swain Hart Taylor

Florence Taylor of Townsend died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 in the Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Elkton, Md. She was 81.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Kemblesville, Pa. and was a lifelong resident of Townsend. She worked as a registered nurse from 1942 through 1983, serving 20 years in the Appoquinimink School District.

She was also a past president and member of the Townsend Womens Club, the M.O.T. Senior Center in Middletown and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Middletown V.F.W. Mrs. Taylor was a life member and past president of the Townsend Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Townsend and was the church organist for 35 years.

Mrs. Taylor was the daughter of the late Anna Irene and Harry Lee Swain. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James A. Hart, Jr. and two stepsons, James A. Hart, III and Rodney C. Hart.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence W. S. Taylor, Jr.; a son, William S. Hart (Mary Ann) of Lafayette, La.; two stepsons, George M. D. Hart of Chestertown, Md. and Clarence R. Taylor of Fla.; two stepdaughters, Rose Wright of Harrington and Shirley Thompson of Smyrna; two brothers, Earl and Joseph Swain of Landenberg, Pa.; three sisters, Lillian Mink of Rising Sun, Md., Ruth Underwood of Northeast, Md. and Irene Redding of Chestertown, Md.; a granddaughter, Angela K. Hart of Lafayette; 14 step grandchildren; and 20 step great grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, March 29 at 2 p.m. in the Immanuel United Methodist Church, Main St., Townsend. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, Main St., Townsend.

Interment will be in the Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

Roy Glenn Hatcher, Jr.

Roy Glenn Hatcher, Jr. of Bear died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at his home. He was 28.

Mr. Hatcher was born July 2, 1973 in Wilmington. He lived in Newport until he was 14 and moved to Middletown in 1987 where he attended high school and graduated in 1992. He was a member of the football and wrestling team.

After high school, he started to play semi-pro football until an automobile accident in 1995 left him paralyzed from the waist down. Before his accident he enjoyed working in construction trades, and was last employed as a dispatcher with Diamond Materials. He continued his love for sports and enjoyed bluegrass music.

Glenn is survived by his parents, Roy and Regina Hatcher of Middletown; a sister, Ann Rees (Lee) of Middletown; two brothers, Eddie of Middletown and Gregory of Indiana; aunts and uncles, especially Charlie and Peggy Mabe of Oxford, Pa.; a niece, Emma; a nephew, Luke; and his pet dog, Shelby.

Services will be held Friday, March 29 at 11 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 310 Clark Farm Rd., Smyrna. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.

Interment will be in the Townsend Cemetery, Townsend.

Edward C. Fortner

Edward C. Fortner, of Middletown, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He was 74.

Born in Wilmington on June 2, 1930, Mr. Fortner was the son of the late Pauline Conard Fortner and Howard A. Fortner, Sr. For 39 years, he worked for the News Journal Company, retiring in 1991 as the assistant director of circulation. Mr. Fortner was a devout Christian and a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Stanton. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of Ducks Unlimited and greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Fortner will be remembered as a devoted family man who delighted in spending time with his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Fortner was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard A. Fortner, Jr. and John A. Fortner. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Clara Yearicks Fortner; three children, Theresa F. Sheriden and husband, Bill, of Middletown; Cathy L. Walls and husband, John, of Newark; and Edward C. Fortner II and wife, Karen, of Newark; six grandchildren, J.R. Walls and wife Beth, Diana Walls, Timothy Walls, Ryan Fortner, Justin Fortner and Colby Fortner; five great grandchildren; and his pet Labrador Retriever, Shadow.

A funeral service was held Saturday, March 19, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City. Interment followed in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), P.O. Box 6067, Stanton, DE 19804.

William A. Lockwood

William A. Bill Lockwood, of Smyrna, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2005 at the Courtland Manor Nursing Home in Dover. He was 80.

Bill was a self-employed plumbing contractor. He was a member of the Middletown Moose Lodge 1295.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Betty S. Lockwood, one brother, Robert Lockwood of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Donald W. McElroy II, of Wilmington and Kimberly McElroy of Smyrna.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 19, in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown. Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer s Association, Delaware Chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE, 19805.

Marion B. Gobrecht

Marion B. Gobrecht, passed away on March 11, 2005 at Union Hospital in Elkton, Md. She was 91.

Born in Rose Valley, Pa., Marion was a resident of Golts, Md. for the past five years. Her previous residence was Wallingford and Chadds Ford, Pa. Marion was the owner of Sentinel Motel in Birmingham Twp., Pa.

She is survived by a daughter, Carole J. (Jack) Maguire of Golts. She was grandmother of two, and great-grandmother of two.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Warwick, Md.

Interment will be private.

Donations can be made to Cecil County SPCA, Md. 213, Chesapeake, Md, 21915.

James C. Piser

James C. Piser, of Sun City, Fla., passed away March 10, 2005. He was 89.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, in the Pacific Theater, and thereafter, had a 43-year career at Agway, Inc. and its predecessor companies, ultimately serving as Agway s National Director of Labor Relations.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Eleanor, and granddaughter, Kathleen. He is survived by his son Philip (Carol) Piser of Tampa, Fla.; daughter Margaret (John) Fenlon of Fairfax, Va., a sister, Phyllis Stoltz of Binghamton, N.Y., a brother, William Piser of Smyrna, granddaughters Kristine Piser and Patricia and Caroline Fenlon.

A memorial service will be held March 26, at Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a favorite charity.

Mary Agnes Carnahan

Mary Agnes Carnahan, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital. She was 82.

Mrs. Carnahan was a longtime resident of Liftwood Estates and currently resided in Shipley Manor. She was a published award-winning photographer and a longtime member of the Delaware Camera Club. Mrs. Carnahan was very devoted to her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Elliot Carnahan; in 1996; son, Norman James Carnahan, in 1997; and daughter, Nancy Jean Carnahan, in 1999. She is survived by two daughters, Louise Mary Mitchell and her husband, James Joseph Mitchell, of Brookeville, Md., and Kay Lucille Carnahan and her husband, Thomas Daniel Nobile, of Lewes; daughter-in-law, Irene Carnahan of Townsend; and two grandsons, Joseph Elliot Carnahan of Richmond, Va. and Matthew Scott Mitchell of Ft. Collins, Col. She is also survived by her close family friend, Lynn S. Ford of Landenberg, Pa.

Services will be held privately.
