M. Virginia Calloway, 83
CHURCH HILL, Md. - M. Virginia Calloway of Church Hill died of heart failure Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Magnolia Hall Nursing Center, Chestertown. She was 83.
Miss Calloway was born in Cordova, daughter of the late James T. and Sarah Waddell Calloway.
She lived in Earleville from 1948 until 1971, where she owned and operated Calloway's Market. She later worked as a practical nurse at the House of the Pines in Easton for several years.
She enjoyed crocheting and crafts and her flowers. She also enjoyed reading and her work, and enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
While living in Earleville, Miss Calloway was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, and served as its Sunday school superintendent for 25 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Calloway; and a sister, Sarah Calloway.
She is survived by a brother, Josiah J. Calloway of Church Hill; four nieces; a nephew; six great-nephews; a great-niece; three great-great-nieces; and a great-great-nephew.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, where friends and family may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Church Hill.

William Roland Clough, 64
SMYRNA - William Roland Clough of Smyrna died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in his home. He was 64.
Mr. Clough was born Aug. 8, 1938, in Kenton, daughter of the late James H. and Bertha M. Clough.
He worked out of the Carpenter's Union 626 in New Castle, retiring in 1994. Since retiring, he made crab traps.
Mr. Clough enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by a son, William Ronald Clough of South Carolina; three daughters, Toni Lee Clough of Greensboro, Md., Janice Lynn Little of Pearsons Corner and Sheila Darlene Clough of Smyrna; a stepson, Tim Baker of Smyrna; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, 2928 Sharon Hill Road, Dover.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice Central Division, 911 S. Du Pont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Clarence Carlton 'Shorty' Elliott, 89
MILFORD - Clarence Carlton "Shorty" Elliott of Milford died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in his home. He was 89.
Mr. Elliott was born Oct. 17, 1912, in Salisbury, Md., son of the late Clarence C. Elliott Sr. and Nellie Kerr Yarnall Elliott.
He moved his family to Milford in 1951 due to a job opportunity with Latex in Dover, where he remained for three years. He then took employment with Demco Co. in Milford for five years and with the Dover Air Force Base for three years. In 1958 he returned to Demco Co., where he remained as a tool-and-die maker for 30 years until his retirement in 1983.
He was known to family and friends as "Shorty."
Mr. Elliott was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford, where he was active in the church choir for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Maude "Maudie" Elliott, in January of this year.
He is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna and Robert Wheelock of Chester, Md., and Sandy and Jack Walls of Milford; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dot and Frank Meade and Elaine Elliott, all of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be private in Parsons Cemetery, Salisbury.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, DE 19963.

Ruth J. Fernandez, 86
REHOBOTH BEACH - Ruth J. Fernandez of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Dover, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Harbor Health Care, Lewes. She was 86.
Mrs. Fernandez was born July 28, 1916, in Henderson, Md., daughter of the late Carroll and Delia (Meredith) Jones.
She was the owner of the Delaware House Restaurant in West Palm Beach, Fla., for many years.
Mrs. Fernandez was a member of Moose Lodge in her time in Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Fernandez.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Joan Garry, 71
DOVER - Joan Garry of Dover died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 71.
Mrs. Garry was born Jan. 9, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late Thomas and Cecilia (Reilly) O'Connor.
She lived in New York prior to coming to Dover in 1992 after retiring from the New York City board of education, where she had worked for 20 years as a secretary.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and playing games.
Mrs. Garry was a member of the Modern Maturity Center and Holy Cross Catholic Church, both in Dover. While living in New York, she had served as a teacher of confraternity of Christian doctrine and a member of the Rosary Society. She was also an advocate for the rights of the handicapped.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Garry, in 1987; and three sisters, Dolores, Jean and Josephine.
Mrs. Garry is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Debbie Garry of Brooklyn and Kenneth Garry of Dover; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lynne and Ron Murano of Livingston, N.J., Joan Marie Garry of Dover and Mary and Marc Johnson of Woodbury, N.J.; three grandchildren, Chris, Jill and Melissa; and a brother, Thomas O'Connor of Dover.
Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover.

Ernest Gary, 93
WYOMING - Ernest Gary of Wyoming died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 93.
Mr. Gary was born in Locust Grove, Md., son of the late Harry R. and Agnes McGuire Gary.
He spent the majority of his life as a farmer, working on both dairy and crop farms in and around the surrounding area.
Mr. Gary enjoyed working in his own vegetable garden, as well as taking care of the animals on the farm. He loved family gatherings and events, and he also enjoyed reading his Bible in the evenings and attending services at the Gospel Holiness Chapel in Marydel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Angie Estella Gary, June 8, 1999.
He is survived by three sons, Joe Gary of Dover, James Gary of Hartly and David Gary of Wyoming; six daughters, Mary Sard of Wyoming, Myrtle Clendaniel of Hartly, Della Eiler of Woodstock, Ga., Rebecca Jackson of Bridgeville, Martha Mench of Dover and Deborah Krupka of Hartly; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth McKelvey of Long Green, Md., and Della Bickling of Chestertown, Md.; 28 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, Md.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Burial will follow the services in Asbury Cemetery, Millington.

Jane S. Learman, 84
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Jane S. Learman of Chestertown died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Corsica Hills Nursing Center in Centreville. She was 84.
Mrs. Learman was born July 10, 1918, in Michigan, daughter of the late Dean and Josephine Taitt Sharp.
She attended college for two years at Antioch College in Ohio, and later finished her education at Delaware State College, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in sociology in January 1970.
Mrs. Learman owned a farm in Quaker Neck with her husband from 1950 until 1997, and personally helped remodel her home on the farm.
For several years she hosted a radio program on WCTR radio station, called "The People of Our Lives," which involved short interviews with local people about their hobbies and other interests.
When in her 60s, she first learned to play golf, and in her later years she became an avid bridge player, including some duplicate bridge.
Mrs. Learman was a member of Chester River Yacht and Country Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Birdsey Lee Learman, a career Army officer, June 27, 1967; a daughter, Ann Requa; and a brother, Dr. Thomas Sharp.
She is survived by two daughters, Eren Rose of Chestertown and Linda Learman of Taipei, Taiwan; three grandchildren, Stephanie Requa of Tulsa, Okla., Jennifer Hankins of Austin, Texas, and Eren Hendricks of Leesburg, Va.; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Monday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sandy Bottom Road, near Chestertown.
Burial will be private in Arlington National Cemetery beside her husband, to be held at a later date.
Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chester River Association, 102 S. Water St., Chestertown, MD 21620, in honor of her lifetime love affair with the Chester River. "She was a conservationist at heart, both of the river and of the rural way of life in Kent County."

Larry D. Mullen, 46
MILFORD - Larry D. Mullen of Milford died of a hemorrhage Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 46.
Mr. Mullen was born June 17, 1953, in Elizabeth City, N.C.
He was a laborer.
He was a veteran of Vietnam War.
Mr. Mullen was a member of Baums Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, Summerville, S.C.
He is survived by his mother, Nellie Mullen of Elizabeth City; a daughter, Tammy Mullen of Portland, Tenn.; a very special lifelong companion of 19 years, Smithie James of Milford; four stepsons, George Lee Reynolds of Georgetown, Antonio Reynolds of Lincoln, and Tyrome Reynolds and Jason James, both of Milford; four stepdaughters, Robin Reynolds of Milford, Sheila James of Georgetown, and Pamela Rey-nolds and Valarie Newsome, both of Houston; two brothers, James Mullen Jr. of Harrington and Shelton Mullen of Portland; three sisters, Wanda Hayes of Dover, and Sharon Scharklet and Vivian Mullen, both of Portland; 31 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, un-cles and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at St. John Baptist Church, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Helen Spate, 87
SALISBURY, Md. - Helen Spate of Salisbury died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Genesis Nursing Home. She was 87.
Mrs. Spate was born June 17, 1912, the daughter of the late William and Mary Pryor.
She married Thomas N. Spate Dec. 27, 1928.
She loved to crochet best of all, making blankets and pillows for her great-grand- and great-great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved to take them shopping and out to eat.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Ling; two great-grandchildren, Richard Keese Jr. and Ra-heem Alonzo; a granddaughter, Darlene; and one great-great-grandchild, Kamyrah Collick.
She is survived by her daughter, Harriet, and son-in-law, Jack Drayton; seven grandsons, Thomas, Johnny, James, Charles, Jack, Darryl and Robert; four granddaughters, Earline, Helen, Arlette and Mary; three grandsons-in-law, Ronnie, Richard and Fufus; a granddaughter-in-law, Ursel; 60 great-grandchildren; and 49 great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Salisbury.
Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Nellie Francis Denson, 92
DOVER - Nellie Francis Denson of Dover died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hos-pital, Dover. She was 92.
Mrs. Denson was born Dec. 11, 1906, in Union City, Tenn., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Allen Reaves.
She was most recently a homemaker. Prior to that she had worked for 20 years for NorthWestern Bell Telephone Co., Minneapolis, where she had lived most of her life.
Mrs. Denson was an active member of the Richfield Garden Club and a senior judge for national flower shows.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lambert Denson, May 12, 1999.
She is survived by a son, Richard James Denson of Halifax, Nova Scotia; a sister, Margaret Fields of Do-ver; three grandchildren, Robin James Denson, Yuri James Denson and Tresju Cimon Denson; and a great-grandson, Pherwyn Denson.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Spring Hill Memory Garden, Salisbury, Md.

Martha Louise Webb Durham, 88
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Martha Louise Webb Durham of Annapolis, formerly of Dover, Del., died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in her daughter's home in Annapolis. She was 88.
Mrs. Durham was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Preston, Md., the daughter of the late Rev. James L. Webb and Deaconess Cora E. Hubbard Webb.
She attended high school in Denton, later moving to Media, Pa. She attended Cheyney State University in Pennsylvania, majoring in home economics. She furthered her education at Delaware State University, Dover.
Mrs. Durham worked for Slatons Slaughter Farms School for Girls, teaching home economics, in Pendelhill, Pa., in 1947. She gave much to the Dover community in 1963, substituting for the home economics teacher at William Henry High School. She retired from Goldingers Bros. Inc., Dover, after 28 years of service.
She assisted in raising the original producer of ABC's "Golden Girls" sitcom, Mr. Harris.
Mrs. Durham participated in the African Exchange Student Program, opening her home up to underprivileged children from New York, to experience country living during the summers.
She volunteered farmland to be used for the agricultural department students of Delaware State College under its late president, Dr. Luna Mishoe.
Mrs. Durham enjoyed sewing, hat designing and traveling with her daughter and son-in-law, experiencing life in Texas, Georgia and Maryland. She learned to type for the first time at the age of 83. She also enjoyed being a mentor for youth.
She moved to San Antonio, Texas, with her daughter in 1993, moving back to Dover in 1995, and continuing her travels with her family to Statesboro, Ga., finally settling in Annapolis.
She volunteered in the late 1960s for Geriatrics of Delaware.
Mrs. Durham attended St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church while living in San Antonio, where she was elected treasurer of the sick and shut-in committee. She was a member of Miller Grove Missionary Baptist, Statesboro. She was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church, Smyrna, Del., where she was a member for more than 30 years. She also was a member of Modern Maturity Center, Dover, where she took classes, and a member of the Nanticoke Indians of America.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 happy years, Wilbur C. Durham, in November 1988.
She is survived by an only daughter, Lucretia Cora Durham Burns, and her husband, the Rev. T.H. Burns, Ph.D, of Annapolis; a younger brother, Lowell Webb and his wife, Rose, of Media; four cousins, the Rev. William Staten of Easton, the Bishop Rev. Marion Ballard of Philadelphia, Susanna Wallace of Royal Oak and Porchia Friend of Laverock, Pa.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Del. 42 and U.S. 13, Cheswold, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Retired Major Robert E.Davis, 68
LONGWOOD, Fla. - Major Robert E., Davis of Longwood died of cancer Thursday, Oct. 15, 1999, in his home. He was 68.
Major Davis was born in Springfield, Mo., moving to central Florida in 1971.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 20 years. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia Currie Davis; a son, Carl W. Davis; two daughters, Cheryl Stidham and Alison Cooper; his mother, Ruby Davis; a sister, Betty Lou Wilson; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the A.F.B. Chapel, Dover.

Paul W. Allen Sr., 54
MIDDLETOWN - Paul W. Allen Sr. of Middletown died of cancer Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 54.
Mr. Allen worked as a forklift operator for Lafarage Gypsum Corp. in Wilmington.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 -1965.
He raised beagles, and enjoyed rabbit hunting, woodworking and fishing.
Mr. Allen was a member of the Teamsters Local 326.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Kathy M. Allen; a son, Paul W. Allen Jr. of Townsend; three daughters, Tina Marie Allen of Middletown, Amy L. Boyer of Bear and Stacey L. Allen of Middletown: his mother, Alva Irene Allen of Ingleside, Md.; five brothers, Samuel T. of Tennessee, Johnie L. of Ingeleside, Albert B. of Newcomb, Md., Francis D. of Florida and William D. Allen of Smyrna; three sisters, Mary L. Hirsch of Virginia, Hazel I. Timms of Kent Island, Md., and Kathleen Walker of Michigan; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Samuel and Barbara Shahan; a sister-in-law, Samantha A. Shahan; and a granddaughter, Kelsi Lynn Allen.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Daniels & Hutchinson Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery, Middletown.

William E. Nagel, 80
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - William E. Nagel of Chestertown, formerly of Catonsville, died of cancer Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 80.
Mr. Nagel was born on Nov. 2, 1919, in Ilchester, the son of the late William E. and Eva May Lowe Nagel.
He attended high school in Howard County.
He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Nagel started work at a young age, working for his uncle as a plumber. He also worked in the shipyards as a welder. He continued his career as a welder/plumber in the Baltimore area after his honorable discharge in 1946, retiring in 1983.
He married Betty Raye Bare Wilson Nagel in 1984. They lived in Kinnaird Point in Worton.
Mr. Nagel's long-time passion was bowling. He also enjoyed golfing, boating, crabbing and playing pinochle. He loved being with his grandchildren.
He volunteered his time to drive cancer patients for their treatments.
Mr. Nagel was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Chestertown, an active member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36, and a member of the Great Oak Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor M. Nagel.
In addition to his second wife, he is survived by two stepchildren, Lloyd Lee Wilson of Norfolk, Va., and Damon William Wilson of Hamptonville, N.C.; three brothers, Earl Nagel of Perry Hall and George and John Walker, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Margaret Wade of Finksburg and Shirley Pendelton of Ellicott City; two aunts, Marie Lowe Ash of Ellicott City and Clara Lowe Linthicum of Baltimore; three grandchildren, Brett Gordon, Brooks Clifton and Asa V.C. Wilson; and a host of nephews and nieces.
Service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Chestertown.
Friends may call tonight from 7-9 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in Meadowridge Memorial Park.

Paul B. 'Bernie' Grier, 76
ARNOLD, Md. - Paul B. "Bernie" Grier of Arnold died from apparent heart failure Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, near Richmond, Va. He was 76.
Mr. Grier was born on Nov. 15, 1922, in Smyrna, Del., the son of the late David and Helen Green Grier.
He served in the U.S. Navy, a veteran of World War II.
He worked in the credit and collections office of Eastern Products of Baltimore for the last several years. He formerly worked for Diamond Ice and Coal Company, Smyrna.
He was a member of Harmony Lodge #13 AF & AM in Smyrna.
He is survived by two sons, Mark Grier of Severna Park and David Grier of Fayetteville, N. C.; a brother, Ronald A. Grier of Smyrna; and four grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private.
