LEWES - Rose C. Hess of Lewes died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. She was 81.
Mrs. Hees was born in Lancaster, Pa., daughter of the late Martin Heisler and Barbara Nick Heisler.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hees was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, Lewes, and the Ladies Community Association.
She is survived by her husband, Roy G. Hess of Lewes; a daughter and son-in-law, Rosemarie and John Spidle of Lancaster; a son, Ed Butt of Lancaster; a stepson, Gary Hess of Englewood, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Paul Hess of New York state; seven grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private.

Tamara Tanisha Johnson, 26
WILMINGTON - Tamara Tanisha Johnson of Wilmington died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, of heart failure. She was 26.
Mrs. Johnson was born Feb. 4,1976 in Milford.
She was a 1994 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes, where she was active in the band and enjoyed playing the flute. Her biggest hobbies were singing and going to church whenever possible with her father to Faith, Hope and Love Christian Fellowship in Milford, Delaware.
She also was a 1999 graduate of Delaware State University, Dover, where she received a B.S. degree in business administration.
Everyone that knew her loved her and will truly miss that big, beautiful smile.
She was employed at Comcast Cable Co. in New Castle.
She is survived by a son, DaVonte Deshon Johnson (9 months old), whom she loved; devoted parents, Charles Johnson, Sr. of Lincoln and Polly Johnson of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a special friend, Yvonne Johnson of Millsboro; a brother, Charles Johnson, Jr. of Murfreesboro; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Harris Sr. of Ridgely, Md.; grandfather, Mr. Clifton Jackson of Bridgeville; godparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Scott Sr. of Ellendale; three nieces and nephews; devoted friends, Sheryl Kearney of Norristown, Pa. and Felicia Dorman of Millsboro; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Faith, Hope and Love Christian Fellowship, 218 N. Rehoboth Blvd., Milford.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the church.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

William E. 'Ted' Layton, 83
HARRINGTON - William E. "Ted" Layton of Harrington died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in his home following a long illness. He was 83.
Mr. Layton was born at Mastens Corner, son of the late Linda K. Layton and Edgar John Layton.
He graduated from Harrington High School, class of 1938. Later, while attending Goldey College, he was a key member of the soccer, baseball and basketball teams. He used these skills as a coach for organized baseball, basketball and football teams for youth and was instrumental in organizing the Harrington Little League baseball league, serving as coach for many years.
Mr. Layton served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a faithful employee of the DuPont Co. in Seaford, retiring in 1981 after 42 years of service.
Much of his leisure was spent with sport teams. He enjoyed annual trips to Florida with his wife and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed being at the Moose with fellow members and with friends at his cottage at Big Stone Beach. He was completely devoted to his wife, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Layton was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since childhood and a member of Harrington Moose Lodge 534 since 1975. He also belonged to American Legion Post 7 for the past 52 years, Harrington Senior Center and was a lifetime member of Harrington Volunteer Fire Co.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, W. John Layton; and a sister, Madalyn Layton.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, which they celebrated on Sept. 21, Laura Belle Poore Layton of Harrington; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynda Malcolm Anders of Lansdale, Pa.; two grandchildren, Ted Anders, and his wife, Rory, of Bear, and Jenna L. Kelly of Lansdale; and a great-grandchild, Emma L. Kelly of Lansdale.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. Du Pont Highway, Harrington.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. The Rev. Denise Collins of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Joan E. Mercier, 74
LEWES - Joan E. Mercier of Lewes died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitaton Center in Lewes. She was 74.
Mrs. Mercier was born in Orangetown, N.Y., daughter of the late Paul and Evelyn Jarvis Lasscell.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Mercier was a member of American Legion Post 17 Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard G. Mercier, in 1998.
She is survived by a son, William Kolb of Sterling, Va.; a sister, Gertrude Manoliades of Silver Spring, Md.; and a grandson, Paul William Kolb of Sterling.
Graveside committal services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Nancy Hearn Murray, 58
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Nancy Hearn Murray of Charlotte, formerly of Seaford, Del., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Sardis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 58.
Mrs. Murray was born April 5, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., daughter of Granville and Pearl Hearn.
She graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1962 and from Greensboro College in 1966.
Mrs. Murray was a teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg for 33 years. Her last position was as a second-grade teacher at Elizabeth Lane Elementary School. Her quote to her class: "I hope you are as happy with my teaching as I am teaching you. I hope I have made an impression in your life, for you have certainly had a wonderful influence on mine."
Throughout her outstanding career she touched the lives of many students and parents. She was very active and dedicated to her church and her community, all to the glory of God. She often organized and led the children's sermon. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Robert O. Murray; a daughter, Leah Wall; two sisters, Carol Kuester and Patricia Cline; a brother, Gran Hearn; and a beloved grandson, Christian A.
Memorial service was held at Faith United Methodist Church, Lake Park. The Rev. Lynn Upchurch officiated.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Madelyn H. Niblett, 81
GUMBORO - Madelyn H. Niblett of Gumboro died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, in the Seaford Center, Seaford. She was 81.
Mrs. Niblett was born in Millsboro, daughter of the late William and Sadie Parker Holston.
She was a telephone operator for Diamond State Telephone Co. for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Niblett was a union representative for Diamond State Telephone operators and attended Gumboro Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Niblett, in 1977.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Lee Short of Seaford; a brother, Granville Holston; a sister, Agnes Miller of Baltimore; and two grandchildren, Richard Lee Short II and Tina Marie Short.
Services will 1 p.m. Friday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Robert A. Hudson will officiate.
Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery.

Maryland Pinder, 86
ROCK HALL, Md. - Maryland Pinder of Rock Hall died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in her home. She was 86.
Mrs. Pinder was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Rock Hall, daughter of the late William C. and Ida Lorraine Mench.
She worked as a seamstress for Rock Hall Manufacturing for 55 years. She was a former seamstress union representative and union president, and received, from the union, several awards for her outstanding leadership and involvement.
She enjoyed sewing and making dresses for her family. She did many of the alterations for the soldiers who formerly served at the Nike base in Tolchester. She also loved flowers. She was very fond of Lady Bird Johnson and Mrs. Johnson's plan to plant flowers along all the interstate highways to brighten our country.
Mrs. Pinder was a member of the Daughters of America Chapter 25, where she had served as president and treasurer since 1980.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Mae Clark, Betty Hall, Virginia Clark, Helen Cliff and Carol Gorman; and a daughter, Anne G. Howell.
She is survived by a son, John O. Pinder Jr. of Jarrettsville; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Messer of Chestertown; two sisters, June Harn of Chestertown and Jean Creighton of Worton; two brothers, Ben Mench of Rock Hall and Phil Mench of Chestertown; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be private.

Margaret Hill Carlisle, 82
DELMAR, Md. - Margaret Hill Carlisle of Delmar died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, Del. She was 82.
Mrs. Carlisle was born in Delmar, daughter of the late Littleton Taylor and Winnie Hill Taylor.
She previously worked as an office manager with Gulf Oil Distributor and Gulf Oil Company and also Koontz Dairy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Taylor; and a sister, Agnes Taylor.
She is survived by her husband, James Moses Carlisle of Delmar; a brother, Howard Taylor of Seaford; three sisters, Virginia Sparrow and Mabel Kinney, both of Delmar and Lola Tingle of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are private and at the convenience of family.

Royce W. Evans, 75
SEAFORD - Royce W. Evans of Seaford died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in his home. He was 75.
Mr. Evans was an Army veteran of Korea.
He retired from the Dupont Company in Seaford after 41 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maude Evans; a daughter, Deborah Bass of Carlsbad, Calif.; a son Royce W. Evans of Seaford; two grandchildren, Michael Evans of Seaford and Katie Bass of Carlsbad; two sisters, Ruth Brittingham and Norma Lee Brittingham, both of Chrisfield, Md.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

Oscar E. Everett Sr., 93
MARYDEL - Oscar E. Everett Sr. of Marydel died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. He was 93.
Mr. Everett was born June 3, 1910, in Sudlersville, Md., son of the late Pete and Anna Everett.
He worked for the City of Dover in the Power Plant until his retirement.
Mr. Everett's pleasures in life were working and dancing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Luff Everett, in 1984.
He is survived by two sons, Oscar Everett Jr. and his wife Anna of Dover and George Everett of Chestertown, Md.; two daughters, Ella Jennings of Camden and Elsie Marker of Milford; 18 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 East Lebanon Road, Dover.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Betty Jean Felgenhauer, 68
LEWES - Betty Jean Felgenhauer of Lewes, formerly of Pennsylvania, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 68.
Mrs. Felgenhauer was born Jan. 30,1936, in Kipling, N.C., daughter of the late Thurman and Lillian (May) Collins.
She was retired from Brooks Instruments, a division of Emerson Electric. She also had worked at Jostens in Telford and had owned an antique store for several years.
She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Mrs. Felgenhauer was a member of Little Zion Lutheran Church in Telford, Pa.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Richard Grasse and Ken Davis.
She is survived by her husband, John E. Felgenhauer; a brother and sister-in-law, Rudolph and Doris Collins of North Carolina; three daughters and three sons-in-law, J. Kristie and Daryl Lowery of Perkasie, Pa., Deborah A. and Larvin Kleiboeker of Hoyleton, Ill., and Alycia and Chris Eckert of Collegeville, Pa.; a son, John C. Felgenhauer of Greenville, Pa.; five grandchildren, Steven Lowery, Rebecca Lowery, Heidi Kleiboeker, Jonathan Felgenhauer and Kimberly Felgenhauer; and a great-grandchild, Brittney Klausfelder.

John J. Hall, 82
HARTLY - John J. Hall of Hartly died Friday, May 14, 2004, in his home. He was 82.
Mr. Hall was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Earl and Florence Nutt Hall.
He lived in Old Bridge, N.J., where he worked for the Ford Motor Co. for 32 years.
When he retired, he moved to Hartly, where he lived for 20 years. He was a devoted husband and caring and loving father, and members of his family miss him greatly.
Mr. Hall was a member of Capitol Baptist Church in Dover, and a Shriner and 32nd degree Mason.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Florence M. Nunamann Hall of Hartly; a son, John W. Hall of Old Bridge; a daughter, Carol D. Hagopian of Albrightsville, Pa.; a sister, Gwen Hall of Harrington; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Capitol Baptist Church, 401 Kesselring Ave., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Ardella B. Hixson, 67
SEAFORD - Ardella B. Hixson of Seaford, DE died on Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. She was 67.
Mrs. Hixson retired from the Dupont Company in Seaford in 1994. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ward and Lida Pearl Barwick; and her son, Jimmy Higgins, in 1983.
She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Jimmie Hixson; in loving memory by her two daughters, Lisa Marie Higgins of Greenwood and Pamela Rena Kernodle of Snow Hill, Md.; two step-daughters, Andrea Lynn Crase of College Dale, Tenn. and Jimmie Paige Lewis of Dunlap, Tenn.; three grandsons, Jimmy Kernodle of Laurel, Finis Jarrett Lewis and Jacob Tanner Lewis, both of Dunlap; a sister, Arlene Gibson of Seaford; and several nieces and nephews.

Douglas Burleigh Jones, 72
SALISBURY, Md. - Douglas Burleigh Jones of Salisbury died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in Genesis Elder Care in Salisbury. He was 72.
Mr. Jones was born Feb. 22, 1932, son of the late Caroline and Burleigh Jones.
He was educated at and graduated from the Salisbury Colored High School.
Mr. Jones then joined the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired in 1972, at Dover (Del.) Air Force Base, as a technical sergeant after 21 years of service.
For the next 30 years, he owned his own taxi service. He also was a laundromat attendant.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Jones; and his grandmother, Sally Holbrook.
He is survived by his wife, Faith Jones of Salisbury; a daughter and son-in-law, Ilene and Bruce Evans of Hope Mills, N.C.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas B. Jones of Newark, Del., and Raymond and Janice Clark of Salisbury; a brother, Harold Jones of Salisbury; two grandsons, Douglas B. Graham-Jones of Dover, Del., and Tyler Clark of Salisbury; two granddaughters, Jaya Evans and Antonise Evans, both of Hope Mills; five brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; three aunts, Lucretia Harris, Ella Smith and Geraldine Jones; an uncle, Wardie Holbrook, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives; and many friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Wesley Temple, West Street, Salisbury.

Marian J. Jones, 92
SEAFORD - Marian J. Jones of Seaford died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in Christiana Hospital in Wilmington. She was 92.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of Concord United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joshua and Lillie Mae James; her husband, John W. Jones, in 2001; and her son, John Alvin Jones, in 1990.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Whaley of Seaford; four grandchildren, Laura Jones, Michael Jones, Cory Whaley and Heather Metzner; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Jones and Zachary Jones.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

Gene Charles Klinesmith, 63
DELMAR - Gene Charles Klinesmith of Delmar died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 63.
Mr. Klinesmith was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Allentown, Pa.
He resided in Delmar for the past 16 years.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Lee (Hastings) Klinesmith.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the funeral home to help defray funeral expenses.

Mabel Lorena McLamb, 72
FELTON - Mabel Lorena McLamb of Felton died Friday, May 14, 2004, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 72.
Mrs. McLamb was born in Marshalton and resided in Townsend for the last 25 years, until moving to Felton last summer with her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Gregory Phillips.
Until her retirement in 1992, she and her husband owned and operated Odessa Alignment and Brake Center Inc.
Mrs. McLamb also spent many years raising her family and babysitting her grandchildren. She was a very caring and generous person who would do anything for anyone. She loved spending time with her family, going to the beach and working in her yard planting and caring for her flowers. She is truly loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gardner McLamb; eight children, Gary McLamb, Randy McLamb, Brenda Crouse, Ricky McLamb, Deborah Larnick, Sandra Vest, Kathy Phillips and Gail Mattei; 28 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, North DuPont Highway, New Castle.
Burial will be in the adjoining memorial park.
