George Albert Metz Jr., 63
REHOBOTH BEACH - George Albert Metz Jr. of Rehoboth Beach died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the Genesis ElderCare Center, Salisbury, Md., where he spent the last 21/2 years. He was 63.
Mr. Metz was born in Lincoln, son of George Albert Metz Sr. and Ruth Edmondson Metz.
He was a graduate of Milford High School and attended the University of Delaware.
He worked for his family poultry business until 1965, at which time he moved to Rehoboth Beach. He then owned and managed the Sea-Esta Motels and was active in the business until 1986.
Mr. Metz enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening and photography. He will be sadly missed by many.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Carolyn Richardson Metz; his children, George Albert Metz III of Rehoboth Beach and Julienne Metz Reid of Garner, N.C.; three grandchildren; a sister, Sue Spencer of Missouri; and a brother, Guy Metz of Michigan.
Services will be at a later date.
Instead of flowers or contributions, time spent with stroke victims would be appreciated.

Gladys Startt Shafer, 96
PASEDENA, Md. - Gladys Startt Shafer of Pasadena died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Mariner Health Center, Glen Burnie. She was 96.
Mrs. Shafer was born Sept. 8, 1906, in Quaker Neck, daughter of the late William R. and Alverda "Hadaway" Startt.
She was raised in Quaker Neck and then moved to Baltimore, where she married her late husband, Lester D. Shafer, in 1926.
Mrs. Shafer was very knowledgeable in current events and enjoyed keeping up with everything from the stock market to overseas affairs.
She was preceded in death by a brother, William R. Startt Jr.; and a sister, Margaret Becker.
She survived by two daughters, Jeanne S. Jackson of Frederick and Gloria S. King of Lothian; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the charity of one's choice.

Cecelia Keene Stafford, 77
EASTON, Md. - Cecelia Keene Stafford of Easton died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in The Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 77.
Mrs. Stafford was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Jennings Mace and Mary Mildred Mills Keene. After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1941, she began a lifelong career as a bookkeeper, working for the Talbot County board of education; Noble Ford; Shannahan and Wrightson; Hallowell Chevrolet; and most recently, the Department of Agriculture and 1st Compute.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry F. Sullivan, in September 1973; her second husband, Joseph Lee Stafford, whom she married in 1965, on Aug. 21, 1993; a daughter, Donna Jean DiRico, on Jan. 14, 1996; a brother, George Keene; and a sister, Anna Jean Kelly.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Maria Meyer of Newark, Del.; a son and daughter-in-law, John Dudley and Susan Sullivan of St. Michaels; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eleanor and Lee Voshell of Marydel and Susan C. Lewis of New Castle; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Joseph R. and Cookie Keene of Silver Spring, J. Mace and Margaret Keene of Baltimore and Leo Keene of Easton; four grandchildren, Sarah Mills Sullivan of St. Michaels, Stefanie Michelle Kutas and her husband, Dr. Timothy Kutas, of Germantown, Tenn., John Ernest DiRico and Katherine Angelina DiRico, both of Marietta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, William Timothy Kutas and Walter Barrett Kutas, both of Germantown; and a son-in-law, Ernest J. DiRico of Marietta.
Mass for the dead will be 10 a.m. Feb. 15 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton, where she was a parishioner.
Burial will be private.

Dr. Joseph J. Suozzi, 78
BETHANY BEACH - Dr. Joseph J. Suozzi of Bethany Beach and formerly of Convent Station, N.J., died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, of complications from surgery at Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Suozzi was a retired director of the Electronics Power Systems Laboratory at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
Dr. Suozzi was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Angeline Suozzi; five daughters, Patricia Suozzi, Donna Tanguay, Gina Suozzi, Veronica Suozzi and Paula Suozzi; six grandchildren, Devin and Callan Suozzi-Rearic, Max and Isabel Haber, Dean Suozzi-Auberry and Dorothea West; and a brother and sister-in-law, Mike Suozzi and Rose Buffa.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Del. 26, Bethany Beach.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery South, near Millsboro.

Morris S. Cover, V.M.D., M.S., Ph D.
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Morris S. Cover of Chestertown died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
Dr. Cover was born in 1916 in Harrisburg, Pa.
He received his veterinary degree, a V.M.D., from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938; a M.S. from Kansas State University; and a Ph.D. in avian pathology from the University of Illinois.
He worked as a poultry pathologist at the University of Delaware from 1952-1959, then served as chairman of the Department of Animal and Poultry Science from 1959 to 1967. He was named director of Veterinary Services and Regulatory Compliance for Ralston Purina Co. in 1967, with a specialization in food safety. He retired in 1985 but served as a consultant for Ralston Purina until 1992. Dr. Cover also consulted for the South Eastern Poultry and Egg Association as research coordinator. He was a recognized expert in regulatory processes, industrial management and research administration. In 1997, Dr. Cover was honored by U.S. Department of Agriculture for his work with avian diseases.
Dr. Cover was an honor roll member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, a member of the Animal Protein Producers Industry and many other veterinary industry organizations. He joined the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown in 1994 and was devoted, as an elder, to the advancement of its mission.
He is survived by a son, Chuck; and a daughter, Wende.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown, 905 Gateway Drive, Chestertown.

William Francis 'Bill' Ewing Jr., 66
DENTON, Md. - William Francis "Bill" Ewing Jr. of Denton died of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Easton. He was 66.
Mr. Ewing was born Oct. 29, 1936, in Talbot County, son of the late William Francis Sr. and Alice Geiling Debney Ewing.
He was a graduate of Easton High School, class of 1954.
He was the owner and operator of Bethlehem Motors.
He enjoyed attending car auctions. He was a generous man and was known for helping many people in the community purchase their own transportation.
Mr. Ewing attended Greensboro Pentecostal Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, who he married on Dec. 9, 1981, Clare "Snead" Ewing; five sons and two daughters-in-law, William Ewing III of Florida, Jeffrey Ewing of Greensboro, Joshua Lee Ewing, and his wife, Heather, of Easton, Md., Jordan Michael Ewing, and his wife Jaime, of Denton, and Jeremiah Nicholas Ewing of Denton; four daughters, Tiffany Elizabeth Ewing of Denton, Sherri Lynn Harrison of Preston, Donna Jean Burke and Kimberly Dawn Beckhert, both of Federalsburg; three brothers, Carl Ewing of Bethlehem, Leroy Ewing and Pete Ewing, both of Cambridge; two sisters, Ruth Stalcup of Preston and Ellen Stichberry of Easton; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Greensboro Pentecostal Church of God, Greensboro, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Junior Order Cemetery, Preston.

Harriet P. Freer, 83
MILFORD - Harriet P. Freer of Milford, formerly of Philadelphia, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 83.
Mrs. Freer was born in Whaleyville, Md., daughter of the late Asher L. and Blanche Littleton Godfrey.
She had been a property manager for Campus Associates.
Mrs. Freer was a member of the Milford Senior Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick S. Freer Sr., in 1996.
She is survived by a son, Frederick S. Freer Jr. of Canton, Ga.; a daughter, Ruth Ann Freer of Philadelphia; a wonderful companion, Joseph Wilson of Milford; and two grandchildren, Nicole Ann Freer and F. Stephen Freer III.
Services will be noon Saturday in Hastings Funeral Home, Selbyville, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Carey Cemetery, Frankford.

Doris Anthony Taylor, 83
CENTREVILLE, Md. - Doris Anthony Taylor of Centreville died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 83.
Mrs. Taylor was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Centreville, the daughter of the late Claude B. and Frances Butler Anthony.
She graduated from Centreville High School in 1935 and then attended Goldey Beacom Business School in Wilmington, Del.
She married the late George O. Yewell of Grasonville, in 1938. Together, they started G&G Distributors of Centreville.
On Feb. 13, 1971, she married George A. Taylor and they resided in Baltimore until his retirement, moving back to Centreville in 1983.
Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Centreville United Methodist Church and a member of Queen Anne's County Women's Democratic Club.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Claude B. Anthony Jr., in 1998.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and his wife, George and Barbara Yewell of Queenstown; two stepsons, Ernest Allen Taylor of Rosedale and George Stephen Taylor of Madrid, Spain; a sister, Frances Ashley of Centreville; and two granddaughters, Mary Yewell of Preston and Donna Yewell of Neavitt.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Centreville.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Centreville United Methodist Church in Centreville.

Paul Whitehurst Jr., 34
DOVER - Paul Whitehurst Jr. of Dover died Friday, April 13, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 34.
Mr. Whitehurst was born June 29, 1966, in Elizabeth City, N.C., son of Paul Sr. and Lula Mae Whitehurst of Wyoming.
He was employed as a laborer.
Mr. Whitehurst was always putting a smile on someone's face with his sense of humor. He loved and cherished all children as if they were his own.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Johnny Whitehurst Sr. and his maternal grandfather, Bervin Brooks Sr.
He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Lillie Brooks of Elizabeth City, N.C.; paternal grandmother, Ella Whitehurst of Elizabeth City; a brother, Ricky Brooks of Dover; three sisters, Jennifer Saunders of Elizabeth City and Vickie Brooks and Sheila Whitehurst, both of Dover; four uncles, Bervin Brooks and Lewis Brooks, both of Elizabeth City, Johnnie Whitehurst of Wilmington and Leo Taylor of Virginia; four aunts, Gladys Robinson, Wilette Norton and Gloria Burt, all of Wilmington, and Charity Taylor of Virginia, ,a special friend, Lisa King of Dover and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Dover.

Edna Caldwell Arnott, 92
DOVER - Edna Caldwell Arnott of Dover, formerly of Beckley, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 92.
Mrs. Arnott was born March 2, 1911, in Tazewell County, Va., daughter of the late Albert S. and Sallie Myers Caldwell.
She was a graduate of Talcott High School in Talcott, W.Va., and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Bluefield, W.Va.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Arnott was a resident of Beckley from 1945-1997; she was an active member of First Baptist Church in Beckley, where she served on the board of deaconesses, American Baptist Women, Fidelis Sunday school class and the Dorcas Society. In 1997 she moved to Dover to live with her daughter. While living in Dover, she attended First Baptist Church, and for the past three years was a resident of Heritage at Dover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harry F. Arnott, on Dec. 9, 1996; three brothers, John O. Caldwell, Carlis W. Caldwell and her twin, J. Edgar Caldwell; and three sisters, Ruhama Richardson, Sarah F. Cox and Ethel Parker.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and George Glading of Dover; a grandson and his wife, Mark and Emily Glading of Wilmington; a granddaughter and her husband, Martha and Jay Steinruck of Hummelstown, Pa.; and four great-grandchildren, Julia Glading, Allison Glading, Kurt Steinruck and Lauren Steinruck.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5252 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Mausoleum in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Charles S. Bothwell, 89
MILLSBORO - Charles S. Bothwell of Millsboro, formerly of Chester, Pa., died, after a short illness, Monday, April 14, 2003, in Crozer Chester Medical Center in Chester. He was 89.
Mr. Bothwell was born and raised in Chester, son of the late Charles and Helen O'Connell Bothwell.
He was a pipefitter for the DuPont Co. at the Carney's Point site in New Jersey, from where he retired after 20 years of service before moving to Delaware.
Mr. Bothwell was a 32nd-degree Mason, a member of Penn Masonic Lodge 709, Free and Accepted Masons of Chester, and of Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Valley of Philadelphia. He had been a Mason since 1940.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean Bothwell, in 1994.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles D. and Nancy Bothwell and Edwin G. and Christine Bothwell; and five grandchildren, Charles R. Bothwell, Jean Marie Falk, Danielle Bothwell, Erica Bothwell and Kristen Bothwell.
Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday in the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck, near Millsboro.

Jeffrey Otis 'Windshield' 'Nakati' 'Chief' DeShields, 49
SEAFORD - Jeffrey Otis "Windshield" "Nakati" "Chief" DeShields of Seaford died of heart failure Thursday, April 10, 2003, in the home of his sister, Lorraine Cooke-Fuentes, Seaford. He was 49.
Mr. DeShields had worked for Exxon Mobil on oil rigs in Louisiana and New Jersey since 1984. He specialized in working on the derrick oil rigs. He enjoyed this line of work and was a dedicated and faithful employee until his health prevented him from working.
His hobbies were fishing, shooting pool and swimming. Above all he loved his family, especially his children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters.
Mr. DeShields attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Creole, La., but most recently accepted the Lord as his personal savior. He was also a life member of Masonic Lodge 262 of Lake Charles, La.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Otis Dickerson and Hazel DeShields; and his brother, Nayman "Pee-Wee" Dickerson.
He is survived by two sons, Jermel O. Smith of Lake Charles and Jeffrey N. DeShields of Cameron, La.; three daughters and a son-in-law, Kimberly Smith of Laurel, Qutisha Williams of Cameron and Nneka V. and Felton Sonnier of Little Rock, Ark.; four brothers, Thomas DeShields and Larry DeShields, both of Seaford, and Wayman "Chuck" Dickerson and Clarence "Dunie" Dickerson, both of Wilmington; eight sisters, Lorraine Cooke-Fuentes and Patricia DeShields, both of Seaford, Shelia DeShields of Cameron, Minister Gwendolyn Fountain, Minister Carolyn Collie and Denise Dickerson, all of Milford, Carlette Dickerson of Wilmington and Dione R. Dickerson of Greenwood; two step-mothers, Kathleen "Kaye" Dickerson of Greenwood and Edith "Sissy" Dickerson of Milford; seven grandchildren, Jermel, Toma, Kiasha, Jakyle, Keilyn, Peyton and Malik; a godchild, Ronnie George Jr.; and a special friend, his former wife of 17 years, Sandra DeShields-Ford.
Services will be noon Friday in Williams Chapel Church, North Cannon Street in Bridgeville, where friends may call two hours earlier. Assistant Pastor Elder Jeffrey O. Nock Sr. will officiate.
Burial will be in Middleford Cemetery, Middleford.

GREENWOOD - Nelson E. Ellis of Greenwood died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Country Rest Home, Greenwood. He was 83.

James E. Hazzard III, 76
MILLSBORO - James E. Hazzard III of Millsboro died Monday, April 14, 2003, in his home. He was 76.
Mr. Hazzard was born in Lewes, son of the late James E. Jr. and Bessie Downes Hazzard.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Hazzard was a chapter member of Dagsboro Church of God, where he served as an elder of the church and a councilman. He had also served as a worship leader.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James E. Hazzard IV, in 1996.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Myrtle Conaway Hazzard; a son and daughter-in-law, Reginald A. and Sharon Hazzard of Millsboro; two sisters, Betty Hill of Lewes and Beatrice Joseph of Willowick, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Kimberly Pettyjohn, Colin Hazzard, Allen Hazzard and Pamela Long, all of Millsboro.
Services will be noon Saturday in Dagsboro Church of God, U.S. 113, Dagsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier. Pastor Kim Tephabock will officiate.
Burial will be in Carey's Cemetery, near Millsboro.

William Morgan Hickman, 88
LEWES - William Morgan Hickman of Lewes died Saturday, April 12, 2003, in his home, with his children and family by his side. He was 88.
Mr. Hickman was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
He later moved to Springfield, Pa., attended Swarthmore College and graduated from West Chester State Teachers College (now West Chester University).
He met Georgette Barber Newlin at the college; they married July 30, 1938. After he retired from the food brokerage industry, he and Mrs. Hickman moved to Lewes.
Mr. Hickman was a Mason, belonging to the Springfield-Hanby Masonic Lodge 767, Free and Accepted Masons, and was a noble of the Nur Shriners. He also was a member of Mensa. He was active in Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes, sang in its choir for 15 years and had recently served as the church's music librarian. Also, he supported his wife's interest in the Maull House in Lewes, maintained by the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she was instrumental in having a state historical marker placed.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2002.
He is survived by his loving family, a son and daughter-in-law, William M. Hickman Jr. and Judith Hickman of Knoxboro, N.Y.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Maelen "Pinkie" and William Byrd of Brevard, N.C., and Jane Hickman of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, his twin, Walter R. Hickman of Ruskin, Fla., and Thomas W. Hickman Jr. of Millville; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Saturday in Bethel Methodist Church, 129 W. Fourth St., Lewes.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Maull House, made out to the "Treasurer of the Col. David Hall Chapter" and sent to NSDAR, 23369 Marina Drive W., Lewes, DE 19958-8307.

Barry M. Hill, 60
FENWICK ISLAND - Barry M. Hill of Fenwick Island died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. He was 60.
Mr. Hill retired from the DuPont Co. in Seaford in 1993 as a supervisor after 32 years of service. Since his retirement from DuPont he has been the service manager for Bob's Marine in Ocean View.
He loved fishing and boating.
Mr. Hill was a Seaford city councilman from 1984 to 1990 and a past member of the Seaford Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Hill; his mother, Beverly Hill of Seaford; four children, Trina Hastings and Richie Smith of Seaford, Kim Robertson of Wilmington and Roxanne Lee of Cadillac, Mich.; a sister, Donna Conaway of Seaford; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be 4 p.m. Saturday in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be private.
