MILTON - Frances Mae Jester of Milton died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, in Capitol Health Care Services, Dover. She was 86.
Mrs. Jester was born in Pinellas, Fla., daughter of the late Jesse L. and Fanny (Dear) Miller.
She was a seamstress for Milton Manufacturing Co. in Milton.
Mrs. Jester enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James I. Jester, in 1986.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Joyce Jester of Milford; two grandchildren and their spouses, James R. Jr. and Veronica Jester and Dean R. and Debbie Jester; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Samuel, Nathan, Amber and Ashley Jester; and a sister, Hattie Tortora of College Park, Ga.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Laura Ann Miller, 29
HARTLY - Laura Ann Miller of Hartly went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with leukemia Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in the Christiana Care, Newark surrounded by her family. She was 29.
Mrs. Miller was born May 14, 1973, daughter of Karen Elaine and Robert Conrad Lockwood of Joppa, Md.
She graduated from Joppatowne High School, class of 1991.
She owned and operated The Gospel Shoppe in Dover. As a devoted Christian, the shop allowed her to share her ministry and her love of Christ.
Mrs. Miller was a devoted member of First Southern Baptist Church, Dover.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of six years, Steven Miller; a daughter, Sarah Elaine Miller; a sister and her husband, Heather Lynn and Sean Hingardner of Edgewood, Md.; her maternal grandmother, Carolyn Wagner of Baltimore; her paternal grandparents, Conrad J. and Bettylou Lockwood of Baltimore; and her father and mother-in-law, Richard and Joan Miller of Joppa.
Maryland services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Belforest Baptist Church, 603 Vale Road, Bel Air, Md., where friends may call two hours earlier.
Delaware services will be 1 p.m. Monday in First Southern Baptist Church, 761 South Little Creek Road, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will follow in the Garden of the Word in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Alexander Oakes Sr., 84
DOVER - Alexander Oakes Sr. of Dover died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Bayhealth/Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 84.
Mr. Oakes was born July 14, 1918, in South Wales, Great Britain, son of the late John and Ann Brizell Oakes.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a tool and die maker for the DuPont Co., retiring in 1980.
Mr. Oakes was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Dover.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Leona Oakes; two sons, Robert Oakes of Greenbackville, Va., and Alexander Oakes Jr. of Medford, N.J.; a sister, Dorothy McGill of Columbus, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Margaret D. Phillips, 64
GEORGETOWN - Margaret D. Phillips of Georgetown died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 64.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Snow Hill, Md., daughter of the late Samuel Foreman and Aline Ressa Johnson.
She worked at Perdue Inc., Georgetown, retiring in the early '90s.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of Pentecostal Prayer Room Church in Millsboro, where she served as the first lady of the church, secretary and minister of the Gospel.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Bishop Jerry Phillips; her stepfather, Grover Lee Spencer of Bishopville, Md.; six sons, James A. Johnson of Williamsville, Larry A. Johnson of Seaford, Brian K. Phillips of Georgetown, Darnell L. Phillips of Lewes, Jerod A. Phillips of Ellendale and Jeron A. Phillips of Dover; a stepson, Conway Davis of Cool Spring; a stepdaughter, Cynthia J. Epps of Oakland, Calif.; six brothers, Robert R. Spencer and Samuel Foreman Jr., both of Berlin, Md., Barry L. Johnson of Georgetown, Kevin Foreman of Slaughter Neck, Douglas Foreman of Dover and Gerald Fore of Baltimore; nine sisters, Joyce A. Silla and Barbara Foreman, both of Washington, D.C., Mary Lockwood and Brenda T. Wise, both of Selbyville, Cynthia D. Johnson of Georgetown, Cassandra V. Johnson of Lincoln, June Foreman of Dover, Connie Savage of Newark, Md., and Latisha Foreman of Salisbury, Md.; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Baptist Church, Mount Joy, near Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Robert Vernon Purnell Sr., 68
GEORGETOWN - Robert Vernon Purnell Sr. of Georgetown died of cardiac arrest Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. He was 68.
Mr. Purnell was born in Berlin, Md., son of the late Charles E. Purnell Jr. and Mable V. Tingle Purnell.
He was a self-employed as a truck driver.
Mr. Purnell was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Baltimore, where he served as an usher.
He is survived by his stepmother, Clara Purnell of Baltimore; three sons, Robert V. Purnell Jr. of Lakewood, N.J., and Jeffery Purnell and Gerald Purnell, both of North Carolina; three daughters, Kimberly Purnell of Georgia and Yvonne Purnell and Brenda Purnell, both of Lakewood; three brothers, Clyde Purnell of Camden, N.J., Ivan Johnson of Willingboro, N.J., and Eflhbert Johnson of Camden; two sisters, Kathleen Houston of Millsboro and Inez Johnson of Camden; a stepsister, Delores Henry of Baltimore; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; uncles; an aunt; nephews; nieces; cousins; in-laws; and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home, 1618 West Road in Salisbury, Md., where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Irvin Williams will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery on Assateague Road in Berlin.

Joseph 'Doc' Russell Jr., 89
CLAYTON - Joseph "Doc" Russell Jr. of Clayton died of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Westminster Village Health Center in Dover. He was 89.
Mr. Russell was the son of the late Joseph Russell Sr. and Mary Stevens.
He was educated in the public school system in Kenton.
He was a truck driver for 40 years.
Mr. Russell was an avid baseball fan and loved to play checkers. He had been in failing health for the last several years. He held out until God called him from labor to reward. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pearl Bradley; a daughter, Marylena Miller; two nephews, Herman Stevens and Leon Stevens; and two nieces, Ida Heath and Mary Belle Butcher.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Belle Russell; six sons and three daughters-in-laws, Martin and Dorothy Russell of Smyrna, William and Jeannette Russell of Clayton, James Russell of Dover, Charles Russell and Hollis Russell Sr. of Clayton, and Wendell and Valerie Russell of New Castle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Ivan Jackson of Clayton and Emily and Martin Warren of Clayton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Avender Jones of Smyrna and Louvinia and George Mitchell Sr. of Townsend; a brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Clementine Russell of Westville, N.J.; two devoted grandsons, Elder Raymond Russell and Hollis Russell Jr.; two devoted friends, Bill Seals, and his wife, Gladys, of Barclay, Md.; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services will be noon Saturday in Blanco Faith Community Church in Blanco, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Lockwood Cemetery, Hartly.

Eleanor Kimball 'Kim' Sharretts, 93
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Eleanor Kimball "Kim" Sharretts of Chestertown died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown. She was 93.
Mrs. Sharretts was born Feb. 21, 1909, in Lunenburg, Vt., daughter of the late Jennie and David Kimball.
She graduated from high school in Lunenburg, Vt., and from Montpelier Seminary, now Norwich College, in Montpelier, Vt., in 1929.
Mrs. Sharretts and her husband moved to Chestertown in 1936. She was employed for 20 years with C&P Telephone Co., retiring in the mid 1970s.
She enjoyed Orioles baseball, traveling, vegetable gardening, animals, reading, ceramics, "The Chester River Chumps" and her "cabin" in Vermont.
Mrs. Sharretts was a member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post 36 Ladies Auxiliary, Chestertown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Chestertown Homemakers Club and the Upper Shore Mental Health Community Volunteer Organization.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, C. Roland Sharretts, in 1979.
She is survived by two sons, Charles R. Sharretts III of Salisbury and David Kimball Sharretts of Chestertown; a brother, Bernard Kimball of Vermont; five grandchildren, Marjorie Sharretts Barrett, Lynn Sharretts Sneade, Charles R. Sharretts IV, Wendy Sharretts Moore and Timothy David Sharretts; eight great-grandchildren, David A. Barrett, Erica Barrett, Kelsey Sneade, Dana Sneade, Charles R. Sharretts V. Megan E. Moore, Kaitlyn Kimball Moore and Emily Catherine Sharretts.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newman Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Those serving as pallbearers are: Timothy David Sharretts, Michael R. Moore, W. David Sneade, David W. Barrett, Charles R. Sharretts IV and David A. Barrett.

Stanley Joseph Kleczynski, 54
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Stanley Joseph Kleczynski of Ponte Vedra Beach died following a two-year battle with kidney cancer Monday, April 7, 2003, in Ponte Vedra Beach. He was 54.
Mr. Kleczynski was born Nov. 10, 1948 in Baltimore. He moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in August 2001 from LaGrange, Ga.
He had served in the U.S. Army.
He was a territory manager for Pennington Seeds.
Mr. Kleczynski was a member of Chesterfield Yacht and Country Club, the Knights of Columbus and Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine.
He is survived by his fiancee, June L. Cooper of Ponte Vedra Beach; a daughter, Ashley Dianne Kleczynski of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a brother, Martin Thomas Kleczynski of Denton, Md.
Graveside memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Francis J. Mindrup, 80
LEWES - Francis J. Mindrup of Lewes died Wednesday, April 16, 2003. He was 80.
Mr. Mindrup was born in Terre Haute, Ind., son of the late Frank L. Mindrup and Mary Kelly Mindrup.
He graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with a degree in civil engineering and was a licensed Delaware professional engineer.
Mr. Mindrup was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He retired in 1985 after 33 years with the DuPont Co.
He loved to sing and enjoyed hiking.
Mr. Mindrup was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Lewes, where he had sung in the church choir. He had participated with all the church choirs in the various areas that he had resided, as well as singing with the Chattanooga Symphony Chorus and the Nanticoke Chorus (Barbershoppers) in Seaford. He had also served as a scoutmaster for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Norma J. Mindrup; five children and their spouses, Lynn Thomas of Gilbertsville, N.Y., Mark and Irina Mindrup of San Francisco, Paul and Georgia Mindrup of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Sheryl and Duncan Schmidt of Mill Valley, Calif., and Alan Mindrup and Patti of Newark; and seven grandchildren, John, Jesse, Jennifer, Joseph, Zachary, Virgil and Justin.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Jude the Apostle Church, Del. 1 at Five Points, where friends may call after 10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Cemetery South, Millsboro.

James 'Pete' Mitchell, 75
MILLSBORO - James "Pete" Mitchell of Millsboro died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 75.
Mr. Mitchell was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army as a corporal with the 3013 Engineering M Company.
He was a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ollie Mitchell; two brothers, John and George Mitchell; and a sister, Joyce Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Trudy Cordrey; three sisters, Elizabeth Mumford, Shirley Helm and Debbie Harbough; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the chapel of the Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road.

Ella E. 'Betty' (Meekins) Teed, 64
HARRINGTON - Ella E. "Betty" (Meekins) Teed of Harrington died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in her home. She was 64.
Mrs. Teed was born in Chestertown, Md., daughter of the late Charles and Rachel Meekins.
She was a homemaker and remained active raising her family and participating in her community.
Her hobbies included cooking, canning, sewing, listening to country music and dancing. She loved writing poetry, creating greeting cards and keeping in contact with all her friends and family through e-mail. She took pride in her home. She also enjoyed collecting hummingbird ornaments and watching the real ones come to her feeders.
Mrs. Teed was a member of Mid-Del Archery Range, serving as its secretary and treasurer for 17 years, and received the first lifetime membership award. She was the leader of the Honeybee's 4-H Club when her daughters were young and was currently a member of the Women of the Moose, Harrington chapter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Joiner.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Thomas R. Teed; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ginny and Donald Jenkins and Beth and Bruce Cordova, all of Harrington; four grandchildren, Randy Lyons, and his wife, Lisa, of Kings Bay, Ga., and Tommy Lyons, Christina Cordova and Rachelle Cordova, all of Harrington; a great-granddaughter, Dixie C. Lyons of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Janet Meekins of Smyrna; two sisters, Mary Johnson and Catherine Dierker, both of Crumpton, Md.; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, George and Maryanne Teed of Wilmington and Wayne Teed of Felton; eight sisters-in-law and seven brothers-in-law, Louise and William Downes of Greensboro, Md., Lois and David Poore and Norma Edwards, all of Harrington, Betty and James Blair of Felton, Margaret and Art Brenholdt of Ararat, Va., Marilyn and Chuck Buckingham of New Bern, N.C., Rose and David Vestal of Roinelle, W.Va., and Mary Jane and Herman Zeitler of Harrington.

Lorna M. Klima, 90
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Lorna M. Klima of Staten Island died Friday, April 13, 2001, in Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn. She was 90.
Mrs. Klima was born April 11, 1911, in Park Ridge, Ill., the daughter of the late Margaret Miller Pagel and Lewis Pagel.
She retired as a medical records clerk from Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
She made her home in Dover, Del., from 1992-1999. She cherished the many friends she made while living here. Moving to Staten Island in 1999, she made her home with her daughter.
Mrs. Klima was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Park Ridge, and a member of the Service League at Lutheran General Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Klima; and her sister, Violet Steen.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Howard Olsen of Staten Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sandra Klima of Dover; a brother, Victor Pagel of Williams Bay, Wis.; three grandchildren, Jonathan Olsen of Staten Island, Kimberly Klima of Newark, Del., and Edward J. Klima II, and his wife, Jennifer, of Newark.

Susie R. Cirwithian Allen, 79
MILTON - Susie R. Cirwithian Allen of Milton died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 79.
Mrs. Allen was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Milton, the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Hudson Cirwithian.
She was a member of Bethel AME Church, serving in the senior choir, lay organization, missionary society and as a stewardess.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, whom she married in 1942, Charles E. Allen; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary E. and Roy Parker of Milton; two sisters, Marie Cirwithian and Sarah Savage, both of Milton; a great-aunt, Mary Frances Crawford of Wilmington; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Turner and Lucinda Allen, both of Lewes; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church, Mulberry Street in Milton, where friends may call two hours prior to service. The Rev. Braven O. Duffy will officiate.
Burial will be in the Congregational Church Cemetery, Milton.

Gene B. Austin, 69
MILLSBORO - Gene B. Austin of Millsboro, and formerly of Seth, W.Va. and Rehoboth Beach, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 69.
Mr. Austin retired in 1998 after 40 years of service with Hazzard Electrical Contractors in Lewes.
He was a member of VFW Post 7447 in Rehoboth Beach, Moose Lodge 646 in Lewes, Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 and Jefferson Masonic Lodge 12 in Lewes, where he was master in 1980. He also was a member of DMS 440 in Dagsboro.
He is survived by his companion of six years, Anga Lee Brittingham of Millsboro; two sons, Joseph H. Austin, and his family, of Harbeson, and Chaplain/Maj. Terry W. Austin, and his family, of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; a daughter, Antoinette A. Schultz, and her family, of Merritt Island, Fla.; two sisters, Phyllis Combs, and her family, of Kitt Hill, Ohio, and Betty Jarrell, and her family, of Ravens Wood, W.Va.; two brothers, Billy D. Austin, and his family, of Ravens Wood, and Charles H. Austin of Charleston, W.Va.; and six grandchildren, Christopher L. Austin, Jennifer L. Austin, Zachary L. Schultz, Zane L. Schultz, Tabathia R. Austin and T. Adam Austin.

Loren Hiram Conner, 89
CENTREVILLE, Md. - Loren Hiram Conner of Centreville died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Corsica Hills Nursing Home. He was 89.
Mr. Conner was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Cooperstown, N.D., one of 13 children of the late Edwin Ellsworth and Rene Hazel (Carpenter) Conner.
He attended school in Cass County, N.D.
Mr. Conner began farming in North Dakota, and later moved east to work as a farm manager and cattle rancher at various farms in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, retiring in 1977.
Prior to and after retiring, he was active in 4H, and loved gardening and the outdoors. He moved to Ingleside and later to Centreville.
Mr. Conner was a member of Ingleside United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married March 23, 1940, Violet Madelyn (Willert) Conner, on Jan. 28, 2000.
He is survived by two sons, Barry Conner of Worton and Gene Conner of Falling Waters, W.Va.; three daughters, Rebecca Wright of Cambridge, Beth Delaney of El Cirrito, Calif., and Linda Backstrom of Clay City, Ill.; two sisters, Mildred Burley of Finksburg and Ora Jean Wilhelm of North Dakota; and numerous grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., in Centreville, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Clarence Robert Ellis, 79
LAUREL - Clarence Robert Ellis of Laurel died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in LifeCare at Lofland Park, Seaford. He was 79.
Mr. Ellis was born in Laurel, son of the late Charles and Carrie Ellis.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
He was a code enforcement officer for the town of Laurel, and co-owner and operator of Ellis Brothers Construction with his late brother, Roland Ellis, in Laurel.
Mr. Ellis was a member and past commander of Laurel American Legion Post 19 in Laurel, Delmar VFW Post 8276 in Delmar, St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Laurel, past member and past president of the Laurel Lions Club and a member and first president of the Laurel Civic Club.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Ellis of Laurel; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Robert and Marty Ellis of Laurel; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy M. and Eugene Geiger of Millsboro, Marsha and Bill Chubb of Laurel and Janice M. and Fritz Geiger of Lewes; a brother, James S. Ellis of Laurel; a sister, Rebecca E. Warrington of Laurel; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Short Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, with the Rev. Kevin English and Rev. Wayne Mathis officiating.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to the Laurel Civic Club, P.O. Box 127, Laurel, DE 19956.
