Clarence Edward Young Sr., 73
MILFORD - Clarence Edward Young Sr., of Milford quietly died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in his home. He was 73.
Mr. Young was born Feb. 22, 1929, in Lincoln, son of the late Roy and Ada Cephas Young.
He was raised in the Slaughter Neck/Lincoln area, where he attended grade school through 11th grade. He completed his senior year of high school at Delaware State College (now University), Dover. Mr. Young served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. Upon his honorable discharge, he enrolled in the Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. He graduated from Eckels College June 11, 1954, with honors.
As a youth, Mr. Young became interested in mortuary science. He was mentored by the late Perry and Erma Reese of the former Reese's Funeral Homes, Milford. He married Dorothy Frances Bacon in 1963. Together, they founded and established their first funeral home in Milton in 1965. A second establishment was incorporated in 1972 in Seaford. In 1987, Mr. Young became owner and director of his third funeral home in Milford, the former Reese's Funeral Home, where he was mentored as a teen.
He enjoyed reading, watching television ministries, sports, making others laugh and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Young was an asset to his community. He supported the local church ministries, community projects and various charities. Believing that all people deserved a decent burial, he often provided these services regardless of the financial situation.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Young Jr.; and a sister, Ada Young Suarez.
In addition to his loving wife of 40 years, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Claude D. and Phyllis Bacon of Oxon Hill, Md., and Clyde J. Young and Clarence E. Young Jr. and Chantel Young, all of Milford; a daughter, Phyllis Perkins of Milton; a foster daughter, Delores Harris of Milford; a brother, Lawrence O. Young of Slaughter Neck; a brother-in-law, Joe Suarez of Lincoln; two sisters-in-law, Rebecca Jones of Seaford and Marylee Grant of Bridgeville; an aunt, Elsie Cephas of Slaughter Neck; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and devoted staff members James Brumble Sr., Francis Green, Carolyn Collie, Grace Young, John G. Young, Cassandra Young, Sharon Cephas, Reggie Vordick, Frankie Suarez, Charlotte Boone, Johnny Boone, Raymond Bacon and several others.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in Young's Funeral Home, 308 N. Front St., Seaford, and from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Young's Funeral Home, 309 North St., Milford.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Avenue Methodist Church, Milford, where friends also may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Harry Berner Jr., 85
SEAFORD - Harry Berner Jr. of Seaford died of natural causes Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He was 85.
Mr. Berner was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He retired from Berner Construction Co., Lake County, Fla., in 1980 after 40 years.
Mr. Berner was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Orlando, Tavares Lodge 234 and Hiram Lodge 21; the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons' Bahia Temple, Orlando; the Kent and Sussex Scottish Rite Club; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; and Order of the Eastern Star Sussex Chapter 7. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5118, Easton, Md., and of American Legion Post 6, Seaford; and a member of the 40 et 8 Club of the American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1520, Easton, and the Elks Lodge, Seaford.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Melvin Berner; three daughters, Carol Ann Dobson of Frankfurt, Germany, Lena May Medlock of Tampa, Fla., and Elizabeth Catherine Soloe of Central, Ind.; two brothers, William Berner of Beverly Hills, Fla., and John Berner of Homedale, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cranston Funeral Home, 300 Shipley St., Seaford, where Masonic services will be at 8.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where friends also may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Cokesbury (Md.) Cemetery.

Dorothy H. Hallmen, 77
LINCOLN - Dorothy H. Hallmen of Lincoln died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 77.
Mrs. Hallmen was born in Lincoln, daughter of the late Irvin and Esther (Taylor) Hall.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Hallmen Sr., in February 1995; and a sister, Mary Davis.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Jr. and Judy Hallmen and Linwood D. Hallmen Sr., all of Lincoln; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Boyd Chaney of Ellendale; a sister, Lucille Webb of Smyrna; a brother, Irving J. Hall of Lincoln; six grandchildren, Janine Willey, James Hallman III, L. David Hallman Jr., Boyd Chaney Jr., Leslie Hallmen and Christopher Chaney; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

James Earheart Jackson Jr., 90
MILFORD - James Earheart Jackson Jr. of Milford died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 90.
Mr. Jackson was born in Philadelphia, son of the late James E. and Sarah (Stretzel) Jackson.
He was a sales representative for Masten Trucking Co., Milford, and also for its successor, Tidewater Inland Express, for more than 40 years.
Mr. Jackson was a member of Temple Lodge 7 of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Milford.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Joan J. Porter, in 1998.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Imelda D'Amelio Jackson; a son, James E. Jackson III of Milford; a brother, George Jackson of Clifton Heights, Pa.; a sister, Ethel Fletcher of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Charles William Jones Sr., 82
MILLINGTON, Md. - Charles William Jones Sr. of Millington died of natural cause Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home, Chestertown. He was 82.
Mr. Jones was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Millington, son of the late George Beecher and Ada (Duling) Jones.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After the war, Mr. Jones worked as the postmaster for the Millington Post Office until retiring after 27 years in 1978.
He enjoyed playing horseshoes and playing pool. He also was very good at fixing things around the house.
Mr. Jones was a member of American Legion Post 192 for 58 years. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 652 and of the Millington Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Mae Jones of Millington; two sons, Charles William Jones Jr. of Millington and Robert Earl Jones of Milford, Del.; two daughters, June Kathleen Ruth of Crumpton and Mary Carolyn Piasecki of Chesterville; a brother, Benjamin Earl Jones of Wilmington, Del.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Millington Asbury Cemetery.

Ralph 'Jack' Jones, 75
MILLSBORO - Ralph "Jack" Jones of Lowes Crossroads, near Millsboro, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in his home. He was 75.
Mr. Jones was born in Millsboro, son of the late Ray M. and Emma Timmons Jones.
He served in the Delaware Army National Guard for 32 years, retiring in 1977.
He also was a self-employed farmer.
Mr. Jones was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Lowes Crossroad.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ardella Lyons Jones, in 1993.
He is survived by a son, Michael E. Jones of Laurel; two daughters, Jane E. Jones and Linda M. Jones, both of Millsboro; a brother, Reese "Jeney" Jones of Delmar; a sister, Betty J. Sullivan of Bethel; a half-brother, Sherman W. Jones of Millsboro; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Roy Phillips and the Rev. Lemuel Hudson will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.

Teresa K. Living, 53
MILLSBORO - Teresa K. Living of Millsboro died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in her home. She was 53.
Mrs. Living was born in Milford, daughter of Ruth Ann Kersey of Millsboro and the late Lee S. Kersey Jr.
She was co-owner of Kersey Homes Inc., Millsboro.
Mrs. Living was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Millsboro, and was a member and past president of the Millsboro Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 33 years, Graham Living; a daughter and son-in-law, Noelle L. and John McColgan of Millsboro; a brother, Kim R. Kersey of Millsboro; a granddaughter, Quinn McColgan; and a niece, Camille Kersey.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, Church and Morris streets, Millsboro. The Rev Dr. James C. Van Der Wall will officiate.

Floyd M. Moore Jr., 53
SEAFORD - Floyd M. Moore Jr. of Seaford died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 53.
Mr. Moore worked for the city of Seaford for the past 27 years, most recently in the parks and recreation department.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Bonnie Moore; a son and daughter-in-law, Floyd M. III and Paula Moore of Seaford; a daughter, Trina Moore at home; two brothers, Howard Wilkerson of Salisbury, Md., and Gary Moore of Seaford; and three sisters, Patricia Griffith of Eden, Md., and Kathy Tharp and Alice Chaffinch, both of Seaford.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Blades Cemetery.

Felicia I. Seery, 76
MILFORD - Felicia I. Seery of Milford died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in her home. She was 76.
Mrs. Seery was born in Jersey City, N.J., daughter of the late Vincent and Irene Bovery. She had lived in Milford for the last 11 years, coming from Green Township, N.J.
She was an office manager and stenographer, retiring in 1951 due to disability.
She really enjoyed her family and loved to go shopping.
Mrs. Seery was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Milford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Vincent Bovery.
She is survived by her husband, John J. Seery; a son, John J. Seery III of Gaines, Iowa; a daughter, Patricia A. Seery of Milford; a brother, John Bovery of New Jersey; a sister, Eleanor Walker of New Jersey; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Thomas and Barbara Seery of New Jersey.
Mass of Christian burial will be noon Monday in St. John's Catholic Church, Seabury Avenue, Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Doris K. West, 66
LAUREL - Doris K. West of Laurel died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 66.
Mrs. West was born in Salisbury, Md., daughter of the late Bassil "Bob" and Helen Kennedy.
She was a Realtor for Calloway, Farnell and Moore in Seaford.
Mrs. West was a member of the Sussex County Association of Realtors.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben I. West.
She is survived by a son, Ben I. West II of Laurel; a daughter, Quinn West of Oceanside, Calif.; three brothers, Bob Kennedy Jr. and Jimmy Kennedy, both of Seaford, and Gary Kennedy of Maine; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Christ the Cornerstone Community Church in Laurel. Pastor Bryan Rice will officiate.

Doris L. Piper, 59
MILFORD - Doris L. Piper of Milford died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in her home. She was 59.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith, Hope & Love Church, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony. The Rev. Ronald Jackson will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Joseph D'Agostino Jr., 71
SMYRNA - Joseph D'Agostino Jr. of Smyrna died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 71.
Mr. D'Agostino was born in Hopewell, N.J., son of the late Joseph and Barbara Modaffore D'Agostino Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Hopewell Township before moving to Delaware.
He was an avid crab fisherman.
Mr. D'Agostino was an active member of St. Alphonsus Church, Hopewell, where he gave many years of service as an usher and by building the outside grotto to the Blessed Mother. He also was a member of St. Polycarp's Church, Smyrna; a labor foreman for Local 369, Trenton, N.J.; a past grand knight for Council 7103, Hopewell; a past faithful navigator; a Bishop Griffin Assembly fourth degree, Trenton; an active member of Bishop Griffin Color Corps, Trenton; a member of the Catholic Men's Club of St. Alphonsus; a PTA member of St. Michael's Orphanage; and a member of the Delaware Valley Horseman's Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Tomasi.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Frances D'Agostino; two sons, Anthony D'Agostino and his fiancee, Linda Olswfski, of Hopewell and Joseph D'Agostino and his wife, Lisa, of Trenton; a daughter, Barbara McLaughlin of Hopewell; three sisters, Josephine Gurka of Hopewell, Antionette Caridi of New York and Antonia Kissell of Lawrenceville, N.J.; a brother, Vincent D'Agostino of Florida; four grandchildren, Gregory McLaughlin and his fiancee, Kathi Burke, and Heather McLaughlin, Samantha D'Agostino and Nicole D'Agostino; a great-grandson, Tyler Roman; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cromwell Memorial Home, 21 E. Prospect St., Hopewell.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Alphonsus Church, Hopewell. The Rev. Ralph Stanley will officiate.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Dorothy Funk, 79
EARLEVILLE, Md. - Dorothy Funk of Earleville died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in her home. She was 79.
Mrs. Funk was born in Chester, Pa., daughter of the late James and Elliebell (Barnes) Middleton.
She spent her formative years in the Chester area. She later moved to Wilmington, Del., where she went to work for the state as a secretary in the Bingo Control Commission. She worked there for 12 years.
She married Joseph Funk in 1969, and together they established a permanent residence in the Cheshaven area of Earleville, where they enjoyed the treasures of the Chesapeake Bay.
Mrs. Funk was very family orientated and was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She loved family outings and gatherings. She enjoyed her friends and enjoyed playing all kinds of card games with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband of 31 years, she is survived by three sons, Jeffrey W. and Gerald E. Dixon of Hockessin, Del., and James M. Dixon of Millersville, Pa.; a stepson, Joseph E. Funk Jr. of Wilmington; a stepdaughter, Jean Austin of Rock Hall; a brother, James Middleton of Lewes, Del.; a sister, Edith Whitesell of Wilmington; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Kim Jordan of Earleville.
A service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 226 E. Main St., Cecilton, where friends may call one hour prior to the ceremony.
Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Cecilton.

Elmer T. Gove, 73
SMYRNA - Elmer T. Gove of Smyrna died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in his home. He was 73.
Mr. Gove was born March 18, 1928, in Townsend, son of the late Chester M. and Viola McNatt Gove.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He worked as a self-employed contractor for the last 34 years.
Mr. Gove was a member of the Kent County Board of Assessment for more than 20 years, and an active member of the 14th and 28th District Democrat Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Theodosia Hopkins Gove, in 1988; and a son, E. Thomas Gove Jr., in 1987.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karyl G. and Ken Butry of Elkton, Md.; a sister, Ruth G. Hill of Baltimore; a granddaughter and her husband, Kara L. and Dane Austin of Clayton; a grandson, Jeremy T. Gove of Smyrna; two great-grandchildren, Shane W. and Shanyn L. Austin of Clayton; and a close friend, Elizabeth Sheats of Middletown.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

George W. Hudson, 76
DAGSBORO - George W. Hudson of Dagsboro died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in his home. He was 76.
Mr. Hudson was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Harvey and Edna H. Hudson, but spent his life on the Eastern Shore.
He was a 1943 graduate of Lord Baltimore High School, Ocean View.
Mr. Hudson was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Force.
He was an electrician for the DuPont Co., retiring in 1983 after 361/2 years of service.
His favorite poem was: "God grant that I may fish until my dying day and when at last I've come to rest, I'll then most humbly pray; when in His landing net I'm safely asleep that in his mercy I'll be judged as good enough to keep.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Grace Wingate Hudson; a daughter, Gwen Dukes and her husband, Harry; and three grandchildren, Amy, Adel and Adam.
A graveside service will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the St. George's Methodist Church building fund, Clarksville.

Rose Ella Leaverton Leary, 84
ROCK HALL, Md. - Rose Ella Leaverton Leary of Rock Hall died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Magnolia Hall Nursing Home, Chestertown. She was 84.
Mrs. Leary was born April 30, 1916, in Rock Hall, daughter of the late Howard S. and Myrtle Judefind Leaverton.
She worked for many years in the family business, Rock Hall Marine Railway, with her husband and her son. She retired in the 1980s.
Mrs. Leary was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Rock Hall.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Leary, in 1975; and a brother, Howard S. Leaverton Jr., in 1996.
She is survived by a son, Elmer Leary of Rock Hall; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Rock Hall. The Rev. Albert Burton will officiate.
