Stewart Ponder, 85
MASSEY, Md. - Stewart Ponder of Massey died of heart failure Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in his home. He was 85.
Mr. Ponder was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Delaware City, Del., son of the late John and Anna Stewart Ponder.
He attended the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Ponder was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
He had worked for Playtex and ILC as a cost engineer.
Mr. Ponder was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Warwick.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Sullivan Ponder; two daughters, Patricia Ann Rossiter of Georgetown, Del., and Sara England of Townsend, Del.; a brother, Fred Ponder of Orangeburg, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Donald L. Spinden, with whom he lived since Mr. Spinden's birth, Debbie Morrison of Milton, Del., Kelly Rossiter and Tracy Donovan, both of New Castle, Del., Gordon Rossiter of Georgetown and James England and Thomas England, both of Townsend; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be private.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Northern Chesapeake Hospice Foundation, PO Box 2332, Elkton, MD 21922.

Richard A. Rosan, 90
GEORGETOWN, Md. - Richard A. Rosan of Duck Hollow, Georgetown, died, after a short illness, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. He was 90.
Mr. Rosan was born Sept. 24, 1912, son of the late Robert and Nanchen Rosan, who had lived in Milford, Conn.
He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Cornell University. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1936.
During World War II, he served as a captain in the 771st Field Artillery. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart and served as a military governor in Europe after the war. He was discharged with the rank of major.
Mr. Rosan, upon graduation from law school, joined the law firm of Cravath, Swain and Moore, working in New York for more than 30 years, with time out for military service, before moving to Wilmington, Del., with Columbia Gas.
In 1951, he became the general counsel, and, later, the executive vice president of Columbia Gas System, retiring in 1977. He then worked as a consultant to both Washington Gaslight and the American Gas Association in Washington for 14 more years. He was considered one of the country's foremost legal experts in energy-regulatory law, and edited a multi-volume book on the history of the natural gas industry.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed swimming, sailing and boating.
Mr. Rosan was devoted to a number of causes and was a civic and church leader during his years living in White Plains, N.Y., and Riverside, Conn. After moving to Maryland, he led the successful drive for a local emergency health care facility. He was a member of the Federal Energy Bar Association, the Kent County Bar Association, the Chester River Yacht and Country Club and the Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years, Helen Marshall Rosan, in 2000.
He is survived by three children and their respective spouses, Richard M. and Nancy Rosan of Washington, Nancy and Richard O. Roblin of Frederick and Wendy and Luis Costa of Fresno, Calif.; eight grandchildren and the respective spouses of three, Elizabeth and Peter Kirkwood, Christina Rosan, Peter Rosan, Pamela and Steven O'Brien, Tyler and Lori Roblin, Justin Costa, Alex Costa and James Costa; and a great-grandchild, Kayleigh O'Brien.
Memorial services will be noon May 25 in Duck Hollow in Georgetown.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital, 100 Brown St., Chestertown, MD 21620.

Leroy 'Pop-Pop' Sanders, 67
DOVER - Leroy "Pop-Pop" Sanders of Dover died of a heart attack Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 67.
Mr. Sanders was born Feb. 27, 1935, in Bennettsville, S.C., son of the late Robert Lee Sanders and Ella Mae Jonakin.
At an early age, he relocated to Philadelphia with his mother and sister, Mary Lee. He attended Benjamin Franklin High School
Mr. Sanders worked for many years with Coren Indik as a spinner.
Leroy met Gloria O. Brown; they were married Nov. 21, 1954. In December 1996, they retired to Dover, where Mr. Sanders formed several friendships and close personal relationships.
Mr. and Mrs. Sanders were affiliated with New Life Family Worship Center in Dover.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Felicia E. Sanders.
In addition to his devoted wife, he is survived by eight children, Rodney M. Sanders of Chicago, Denise S. Hardy of Dover, Theresa O. Bess of Philadelphia, Malcolm L. Sanders of Palmyra, N.J., Lee R. Sanders of Clemmons, N.C., Gloria "Michelle" Bennett of Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth A. Johnson of Pine Hill, N.J., and Prince Brown of White Plains, Md.; three daughters-in-law, Cheryl Sanders, Patrice Sanders and Bonnie J. Brown; four sons-in-law, Ricky Hardy, Norwood Bess, Tim Bennett and Kenneth Johnson; 16 grandchildren, Novita Hardy, Kaneasha Shockley, Sherrell Bess Barnes, Tenea Sanders, Malcolm Sanders, Brian Sanders, Janee Sanders, Andre Sanders, Kiara Hall, Karimah Bennett, Jasmine Bennett, Katia Bennett, Danielle Sanders, Kenneth Johnson, Eriq Johnson and Candace Brown; a sister, Mary Lee Whittaker; three great-grandchildren, Tyrell Barnes, Brianna Barnes and Paula Barnes; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Services will be noon today in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Clyde L. Thrift, 77
NEOSHO, Mo. - Clyde L. Thrift of Neosho died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Freeman Neosho Hospital in Neosho. He was 77.
Mr. Thrift was born July 4, 1925 in Church Hill, Md.
He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Thrift was honorably discharged and moved back to Chestertown where he worked in the retail grocery business at A&P. He later moved to California and finally Missouri in 1983,where he continued his career in the grocery business. He married Dorothy R. Shockey on Nov. 29, 1963.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Walbert and Doris Loomis.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Steve Horine of Neosho; a daughter, Mary Horine of Neosho; four grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; a brother, Charles R. Thrift of Chestertown, Md.; two sisters, Hilda Raleigh of Fairlee, Md. and Madeline Watts of Glen Burnie, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road. Chestertown, Md., where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Church Hill Cemetery Church Hill, Md.

Kathleen M. Beck, 51
GEORGETOWN - Kathleen M. Beck of Georgetown died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. She was 51.
Mrs. Beck was a rural mail carrier in Georgetown for the last 10 years. Prior to that, she worked at Dillard's Restaurant for 17 years.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph E. Beck; a son, Joseph E. Beck Jr. of Georgetown; a daughter, Mara Beck of Collingswood, N.J.; two brothers, Maurice Bearese of Saudi Arabia and Brian P. Bearese of Georgetown; a sister, Betty Larosa of South Hempstead, N.Y.; and a grandson, Neil Beck of Collingswood.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 Shipley St., Seaford.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Stein Highway, Seaford.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Frances Corney, 44
SMYRNA - Frances Corney of Smyrna died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 44.
Ms. Corney was born July 20, 1958, in Dover, daughter of Floyd Corney and Beatrice Mosley Childress, both of Smyrna.
She had her own business doing home cleaning.
Ms. Corney enjoyed doing any crafts with flowers, arranging flowers and making wreaths. She also loved animals.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Patsy Ann and Beatrice Lorraine; and two brothers, Leon and Lionel Corney.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her stepfather, Thomas Childress of Smyrna; an aunt, Ida Mae Coker of Dover; and a cousin, Clarence Coker of Dover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Immanuel Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheswold.

Mamie Beatrice Davis, 96
DOVER - Mamie Beatrice Davis of Dover died, after a long illness, Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in the home of her son. She was 96.
Mrs. Davis was born Dec. 27, 1907, daughter of the late George and Sarah Jane Ames.
She was a homemaker for 30 years.
She attended school in Somerset County, Md.
Mrs. Davis was a lifelong member of St. Paul Community Baptist Church in Baltimore. She was a faithful missionary and deaconess, and sang on the Revel Gospel Chorus until her health failed her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Samuel Davis.
She is survived by a son, Terry D. Davis; a devoted and faithful companion, Arlene L. Coleman of Dover; three grandchildren and their respective spouses, James R. and Tanya Dixon of Dover, Tyrone Davis of Ovieda, Fla., and Laleta L. LeCompte of Smyrna; four great-grandchildren, Lathaniel, Radasha, Marissa and Julian, all of Dover; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. today in John Wesley AME Church, 217 W. Division St., Dover. The Rev. Frances Benson will officiate.
Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Arbutus Memorial Park, 1300 E. Lanvalle St., Baltimore.

E. Kay Hoffer, 61
SELBYVILLE - E. Kay Hoffer, of Selbyville, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. She was 61.
She was born in Washington, the daughter of the late John P. and Marie Sause Hoffer.
She is survived by a brother and his wife, John and Barbara Hoffer, of Baltimore.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Clarksville Chapel, Del. 26 and Del. 17, in Clarksville, Pastor Jack Savage officiating.
Burial will be private.

Russell Jones, 80
LAUREL - Russell Jones, of Laurel, died of heart failure Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 80.
Mr. Jones was born in Seaford, son of the late Amos Jones and Lena Staub Jones Bahr.
He was a farmer for more than 60 years.
Mr. Jones was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Laurel, and a member of the Rotarian Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Jones in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Carey Jones; a son, Glen R. Jones of Bethel; a daughter, Brenda J. Leslie, of Ocean Pines, Md.; a sister, Marguerite Morrison, of Seaford, and six grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and Kings streets, Seaford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Concord.

Albert Slawter, 84
GRADYVILLE, Pa. - Albert Slawter, of Gradyville, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Riddle Memorial Hospital, Media. He was 84.
Mr. Slawter was born Jan. 21, 1917, the son of the late Lena and Albert Slawter. He was raised in Chalfonte in a P.O.S. of A. Orphanage. He was Brookhaven resident for most of his adult life, moving to White Horse Village in 1992.
He graduated from Doylestown High School.
He served for four years and four months in an Army artillery division in Alaska and Germany.
He was a refinery worker in Sun Oil Co. in Marcus Hook
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married in 1949, Margaret Vessels Slawter.
He is survived by a son, Albert V. Slawter of Milford, Del.; two brothers, William Slawter of Linwood and James Slawter of Aston; and his good friend, Sally McPhillimy of Gradyville.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Middletown Baptist Church, 28 South New Middletown Road, Media.
Memorial contributions may be made to Middletown Baptist Church building fund, 28 South New Middletown Road, Media, PA.

Clayton Linwood Townsend Jr., 64
LEWES - Clayton Linwood Townsend Jr., of Lewes, died Friday, April 20, 2001, in his home. He was 64.
He survived by two sons, Trey Townsend and Chris Townsend; a stepdaughter, Eve Lloyd; a brother, Haywood Townsend and his wife, Susan; and a sister, Mary Ellen Townsend Terrell.

Josephine A. Rash, 69
FELTON - Josephine A. Rash of Felton died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospi-tal, Dover. She was 69.
Mrs. Rash was born March 5, 1934, in Dover, daughter of the late Victor and Myrtle (Walls) Arrington.
She was a secretary at Air Base Carpet Mart, Dover.
She was very active in the C&W Little League and enjoyed shopping for antiques and collectibles, attend-ing auctions and playing bingo.
Mrs. Rash attended New Life Wesleyan Church, Greensboro, Md.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald I. Rash Sr.
She is survived by four sons, Donald I. Rash Jr. of Laurel, Victor R. Rash of New York and Michael G. Rash and Perry Rash, both of Dover; a brother, Victor L. Arrington of Kingsport, Tenn.; her companion, Marshall Bright of Felton; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Remembrance services will be at 1 p.m. today at Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.

C. Christine Ellis, 86
SEAFORD - C. Christine Ellis of Seaford died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Genesis Eldercare, Seaford. She was 86.
Mrs. Ellis was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Birmingham, Ala., daughter of the late Ed and Leona Carroll Sharp.
For several years she owned and operated Lucy's Flowers in Federalsburg, Md. Earlier she had been employed at The E.I. DuPont Co. in Seaford.
Mrs. Ellis attended the First Baptist Church in Seaford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Ellis, on Nov. 11, 1995 and a brother, Carroll Sharp.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy Weldon and Susan L. Towers, both of Seaford; a sister, Mildred Stiff of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held in Frampton-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael Hopkins officiated.
Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Federalsburg.

Edna M. Garvin, 92
SEAFORD - Edna M. Garvin of Seaford died of heart failure Friday, April 18, 2003, in the Lewes Convalescent Center, Lewes. She was 92.
Mrs. Garvin was born Aug. 27, 1910, in Seaford.
She was a domestic worker in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Garvin gave her heart to the lord a long time ago and was a member of the Christian Tabernacle Church in Philadelphia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Trump Garvin.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Brooks Cannon of Seaford; a sister-in-law, Anita Nichols of Seaford; five grandsons and their wives, Brooks Cannon and his devoted friend, Elaine Scott, Donald and Henrietta Cannon, and Melvin and Alfreda Cannon, all of Seaford, Wayne and Alisia Cannon of Dover, and Ronnie and Venita Cannon of Milford; two granddaughters and their husbands, Barbara and James Harmon Sr. of Millsboro and Theresa C. and William Justice of Seaford; 23 great-grandchildren, 48 great-great-grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight in the Bethel United Methodist Church, Bridgeville.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the church.
Burial will be in Mt. Calvary AME Church Cemetery, Concord.

Agnes Hadley, 92
GALENA, Md. - Agnes Hadley of Galena died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in Laurelwood Nursing Home, Elkton. She was 92.
Mrs. Hadley was born Feb. 5, 1911, in Galena, daughter of the late John and Mary Woodall Newnam.
She was a graduate of Salisbury Normal School and the University of Maryland.
She operated a private kindergarten until 1961, when she began teaching 2nd grade at Galena School.
Mrs. Hadley was an active member of St. Dennis Roman Catholic Church, serving with their Altar-Rosary Society and teaching Sunday school. She was also a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and helped organize the Galena Twig Library.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Walter D. Hadley, in 1974; a daughter, Agnes A. Blakslee, and a brother, John F. Newnam.
She is survived by three daugthers, Joan Campbell and Connie Green, both of New Castle, and Jean McCain of Newtown Square, Pa.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in Galena Cemetery.

Daryl Joseph Hogan, 79
REHOBOTH BEACH - Daryl Joseph Hogan of Rehoboth Beach died Monday, April 21, 2003, in his home. He was 79.
Mr. Hogan was born in New Kensington, Pa., son of the late Joseph and Tamzon (Bailey) Hogan.
He had served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Hogan had been employed as the building and grounds supervisor for the Washington, D.C. School District for 17 years, retiring in 1979.
He enjoyed carpentry and was a self-taught organist.
Mr. Hogan was a member of the Civitan Club, Lanham, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Miller Hogan; two sons, Gregory Hogan of Frankford and Keith Hogan of Rehoboth Beach; a sister, Shirley Remaly of Berryville, Va.; four grandchildren, Janice Cumberledge of Milford, Kimberly Eubanks of Laurel, Md., Joshua Hogan of Frankford, and Anna Lee Hogan of Rehoboth Beach; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Compassionate Care Hospice, 5610 Kirkwood Highway, Suites 5610-5612, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Vernon R. Mitchell, 73
DELMAR - Vernon R. Mitchell of Delmar died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 73.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Selbyville, son of the late Charles and Minnie Mitchell.
He had worked for the former Curtis Steen Co. and later for Coastal Supply Co., both in Dagsboro.
Mr. Mitchell attended the Bethel Tabernacle in Clarksville.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Sarah Mitchell Bayly of Delmar; a sister, Cecil Mae Coffin of Walston Switch, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Dagsboro Redmen's Memorial Cemetery, Dagsboro.
