Bernadine A. Morgan, 88
MILFORD - Bernadine A. Morgan of Milford died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, Va. She was 88.
Mrs. Morgan was born Dec. 28, 1914 in Patterson, N.J., daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy Aronowitz.
She was a secretary for the Marvel Agency in the 1960s and '70s.
She loved to travel and was an avid doll collector.
Mrs. Morgan was a member of the Homemaker Club and the Milford Senior Center. At the center she was a librarian and was a member of the square dance group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Morgan, in 1991; her sister, Lucille Daimler; and a very close friend, Carrie Bowman.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and the Rev. Jeffrey Hale of Catlett, Va.; four grandchildren, Benjamin, and his wife, Jeanna, Mindel, Samuel and Zachary; and a niece, Sharon White of Largo, Fla.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Milford Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Milford Senior Center, 111 Park Ave., Milford, DE 19963.

Barbara Blair Newman, 74
DOVER - Barbara Blair Newman of Dover died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 74.
Mrs. Newman was born Feb. 23, 1928 in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late Raymond and Ruth (Coyle) Blair.
She was a great cook and developed her talent into a successful catering business.
Mrs. Newman owned and operated for many years the Fairfield Deli in Fairfield, N.J., until easing into retirement and moving to Delaware.
She took great pride in her Scottish ancestry and belonged to the Clan Blair Society.
She had many talents and hobbies, including arts and crafts such as quilting, knitting, sewing, needlepoint, crocheting, basket weaving and ceramics. Mrs. Newman had a love for animals, especially her dogs.
Above all, she was a loving wife, mother and adoring grandmother. Throughout her life she was always an enthusiastic supporter of her husband's coaching activities and family sporting events.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jack Newman; a son, John Newman of Wyoming; a daughter, Debbie Post of Hackettstown, N.J.; a brother, Raymond A. Blair Jr. of Gibsonia, Pa.; six grandchildren, Leigh Ann Newman, Stacy Newman and Blair Newman, all of Wyoming, Matthew Post of New York City, and Melissa Post and Kyle Post, both of Hackettstown.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. John W. Davis will officiate.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Hester Pleasanton, 103
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Hester Pleasanton of Cape Coral died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Cape Coral. She was 103.
Mrs. Pleasanton was born Dec. 24, 1899, in Smyrna, Del., daughter of the late Mary and William Corby.
She lived most of her life in Dover, Del., and worked for Richardson and Robbins in Dover for 47 years. She had been a resident of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area since 1992; prior to that time, she lived in Camden, Maine, for approximately 10 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl Pleasanton; and two daughters, Mabel M. Wright and Earlene Kleinschmidt.
She is survived by six grandchildren and the respective spouses of three, Joanna and Jim Fitzcharles of Cape Coral, Richard and Doris Donahue of Millsboro, Del., Kay and Rodney Biddle of Chapel Hill, N.C., Ernest Rash of Marydel, Del., and Linda and Diann, both of Hammond, Ind.; two step-grandchildren, J. Edward Wright of Clearwater, Utah, and Jenny Friedman of Fort Myers; seven grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a son-in-law, Jimmy D, Wright.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Faries Funeral Home, 1250 S. Governors Ave., Dover, Delaware, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Pauline Johannsen Turner, 87
PRESTON, Md. - Pauline Johannsen Turner of Preston died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in Caroline Nursing Home in Denton. She was 87.
Mrs. Turner was born April 11, 1915, in Vienna, daughter of the late Carsten and Helen Hahn Johannsen.
She and her family moved to Federalsburg and she attended Federalsburg High School, class of 1932. She went on to attend Baltimore Business College.
She returned to Preston and worked at A.W. Sisk & Sons until 1947, when she became a homemaker.
Mrs. Turner was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Preston.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald B. Turner, who passed away Jan. 20, 1992; a daughter, Christine T. Skinner, who passed away Nov. 27, 1997; and two brothers, August Johannsen and Frederick Johannsen.
She is survived by a son, Charles R. Turner of Derwood; a sister, Louise Schmidt of Preston; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Main Street, Preston. The Rev. Neal Andersen will officiate.
Burial will be in Jr. Order Cemetery, Preston.

Madeline L. Wells Warrington, 72
GEORGETOWN - Madeline L. Wells Warrington of Georgetown died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Bayhealth/Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 72.
Mrs. Warrington was born in Millsboro, daughter of the late Lester James and Pearl Cullen Wells.
She and her husband owned and operated Warrington Painting Co. Inc. for more than 40 years, and Warrington Farms, where they raised and trained horses for harness racing for 27 years.
Mrs. Warrington attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Laurel, and was a member of the Delaware and Maryland Racing Association and the U.S. Trotting Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cordia W. Warrington; a son, Larry L. Warrington; a granddaughter, Jennifer Warrington; and a sister Neva Pugh.
She is survived by two sons, Cordia W. Warrington IV and Gary L. Warrington, both of Georgetown; three daughters, Patricia A. Brittingham, Phyllis A. Hayes and Diane W. Kahler, all of Georgetown; three brothers, Lester Wells and Richard Wells, both of Gumboro, and Robert Wells of Willards, Md.; three sisters, Shirley Nicholson of Bishopville, Md., Donna Walker of Georgetown and Linda Milliner of Crisfield, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Pastor Don Murray will officiate.
Burial will be in Cokesbury Church Cemetery near Georgetown.

Robert L. Andrews, 70
DOVER - Robert L. Andrews of Dover died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in Dover. He was 70.
Mr. Andrews was a member of Silver Lake Fishing Club and Strasburg (Pa.) American Legion Post 77, and a past member of Maple Dale Country Club and Garrison Lake Country Club.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today in the River View Cemetery, Strasburg, Va.
Contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice Inc., 911 S. Du Pont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Kenneth Weston Baker, 92
SMYRNA - Kenneth Weston Baker of Smyrna died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 92.
Mr. Baker was born April 20, 1911, in Big Rapids, Mich., eldest son of the late Sheldon Yetman Baker and Blanch Tompkins Baker.
His mother died when he was just 2 years old and his brother, Willis "Bill," was about 2 weeks of age. In 1914, his father married Martha Dzur, then of Benona, Oceana County, Mich. In 1915, the family moved to Merrill, Wis., where his father taught at Commercial College. He had typical memories of Merrill: snow, horse-drawn fire wagons, snow, candy stores and snow. The family later moved back to Oceana County, where his father taught school in the area.
While attending school in Shelby, Mr. Baker sold newspapers, which he picked up at the train stop and sold downtown. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1927.
In 1937, he married Lola Elaine Wade in Bear Lake, Mich. The couple lived and raised their daughter in both Grand Rapids and Shelby. He worked at the Willow Run Defense Plant in Michigan during World War II, and later, worked as a welder at the Kelvinator Plant in Grand Rapids and Reynolds Metals Co. in Grand Rapids. He and his brother-in-law owned and operated a private dairy in Shelby for many years. He then worked for the Borden Dairy Co. in Grand Rapids and for the School District in Ada, Mich. In 1970, the couple moved to California, where Mr. Baker was employed by the Santa Clara County School District. After retirement in 1985, he moved to Smyrna.
Mr. Baker was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking, model trains and stamp collecting. He was dearly loved and will live in the hearts of his relatives forever.
In addition to his parents and his brother, he was preceded in death by two half-sisters, Ivah Cole and Helen Klintworth; and a half-brother, Leo.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, of Dover, and his daughter, Barbara Zahn of Smyrna, he is survived by a granddaughter, Cordie Lyon of Pennsylvania; a half-brother, Russell, of Farmington, Mich.; a half-sister, Beatrice Beck of Texas; and many nieces, nephews and extended-family members.
Burial will be private in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Salvation Army.

Ruth Porter Field, 85
STOCKTON, Calif. - Ruth Porter Field of Stockton, formerly of Dover, Del., died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, after a short illness. She was 85.
Mrs. Field was born June 8, 1917, in Fayetteville, N.C., the fourth of five children of the late Lemuel Harrison Porter and Minnie Belle Monroe Porter.
She studied voice and piano for many years and was singing solos in public by age 7. At age 14, she had her own weekly radio show, singing sacred music. A graduate of Fayetteville High School and Worth Business College of Fayetteville, she became the executive secretary to the commandant of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Ft. Bragg, N.C. Later, she studied at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., where twice she sang under Toscanini in Carnegie Hall. She had been a resident of the Dover, Del. and Wyoming, Del. areas for over 50 years, and performed at hundreds of local weddings, funerals, meetings and public events. She was a community activist, advocating for the arts and education. In addition, she taught piano and voice for 17 years.
Mrs. Field was the co-founder with Margaret Storey in 1957 of the Dover (now Delaware) Choral Society. That first year, she went door to door asking merchants for $5 donations to sponsor Handel's "Messiah." Forty singers met weekly in church basements to rehearse. They performed with orchestra and both professional and local soloists, of which she was one, in the Dover Auditorium at Central Middle School.
In the 1950s, she helped bring the Community Concert Series to Dover, which featured internationally renowned artists, including pianist Andre Watts, the Baltimore Symphony, and guitarist Andres Segovia.
Mrs. Field sang in the Dover Century Club Chorus for many years. She taught at the Dover Kindergarten and first grade music at Caesar Rodney Elementary for two years. When her husband started the Field Construction Co. in 1960, she worked as office secretary and was an officer of the corporation.
While living in Dover, Del. and Wyoming, Del., Mrs. Field was involved in civic, church and club work and many community and school activities. She was the second president of the Westminster Retirement Community's Resident Council, a past president of the Wyoming-Camden Round Table Club, twice state music chair and once Kent County vice president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and served in other state, county and local capacities. She was chair of the Kent County Bicentennial Committee.
A longtime member of Wyoming United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir, founded the church library, served on many boards and councils, was a member of the Adult Fellowship and held many offices in the United Methodist Women. Among her civic activities were the Caesar Rodney P.T.A., Band Parents' Club and school fund-raisers. She helped to develop the Wyoming Town Park and to start the Wyoming Peach Festival. She traveled widely and read extensively.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, whom she married on Dec. 27, 1941, Earl R. Field, in 1997.
She is survived by five children, Virginia Tompkins of Acton, Mass., Russell Field of Newark, Del., Martha Tipton and Gregory Field, both of Stockton, and Warren "Joe" Field of Sparks, Nev.; her sons-in-law, David Tompkins and Richard Tipton; three grandsons, Erin Caves of Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Dylan Field of Chapel Hill, N.C., and John Montgomery of Ankeny, Iowa; two siblings, Treva Pendleton of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Herbert L. Porter of Durham, N.C.; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, in the Wyoming United Methodist Church on Broad Street in Wyoming, Del.
Burial will be private.

Harriett Virginia Legg, 85
ROCK HALL, Md. - Harriett Virginia Legg of Rock Hall died of heart failure Friday, April 25, 2003, in the Magnolia Hall Nursing Home, Chestertown. She was 85.
Mrs. Legg was born in Rock Hall, daughter of the late Walter Henry Hague and Margaret Helen Wagner Hague.
She owned and operated the Rock Hall Pharmacy for many years, retiring in 1982. She also worked for 40 years as an election official for the town of Rock Hall, working the polling place during election years.
Mrs. Legg was very active for years in the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. She also played a very important role in the community by answering phone for the fire company and sounding the alarm and manning the radio at the firehouse before Kent County established a central alarm system. For many years, she was involved in the Diabetes Association of Maryland.
Prior to losing her eyesight, she enjoyed reading and crocheting.
Mrs. Legg was a life member of the Rock Hall Alumni Association and a member of the Wesley Chapel Church, Rock Hall.
She is survived by three sons, Martin Legg and Edgar H. Legg, both of Rock Hall, and Robert M. Legg of Wardensville, W. Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Wesley Chapel Church, Rock Hall, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Wesley Cemetery.

Randy A. Lum, 44
PARKESBURG, Pa. - Randy A. Lum of Parkesburg, formerly of Middletown, Del. and Millsboro, Del., died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in his home. He was 44.
Mr. Lum was born Oct. 12, 1958, in Wilmington, Del., son of Melvin E. Lum and Doris P. Lum.
He was a 1976 graduate of Middletown High School, Middletown, Del. He also attended Delaware Technical and Community College, Georgetown, Del. and the Delaware County Community College in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Lum was a construction superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin and Evelyn Lum and Edward and Mabel Pleasanton, and an uncle, B. Eugene Lum.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Kevin W. Lum of Harbeson, Del. and Keith E. Lum of Chincoteague, Va.; two nephews, Jeremy and Stephen Lum; two nieces, Jessica and Rachel Lum; five uncles and their families, Rodney and Roger Pleasanton, Jack, Frank, and Patrick Lum; and an aunt, Mary Porter.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro. The Rev. Carl Kunz will officiate.
Burial will be private.

Rosia Mae Brown, 84
FRANKFORD - Rosia Mae Brown of Frankford died Monday, April 23, 2001, in the home of her daughter, Hester Taylor, following a long illness. She was 84.
Mrs. Brown was born Aug. 7, 1916, the daughter of the late Henry and Hallie Mumford.
She received her education from Bishopville School.
Mrs. Brown attended St. John's AME Church in Bishopville, Md., until she became an adult after which she became a member of Calvary Pentecostal Church in 1959.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married in the late 60s, Willie Brown; six brothers; and four sisters.
She is survived by eight daughters, Anna Purnell, Sarah Garrison, and Ellen Rayne all of Selbyville, Delores Hill and her husband Allen of Georgetown, Alice Gibbs of Laurel, Frances Chisum of Millsboro, Rosie Hall and her husband Edward and Hester Taylor and her husband Linwood all of Frankford; a foster child, Anthony Rayne; three devoted friends, Gloria Leonard, Eileen Shelton, and Pauline Westcott; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family.
Service will be noon Saturday at Calvary Pentecostal Church in Bishopville, where friends may call two hours prior to service.
Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Ruth H. Brunner, 76
SEAFORD - Ruth H. Brunner of Seaford died of heart failure Friday, April 27, 2001, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 76.
She is survived by her husband of eight years, Leon Brunner; two sons, Mark Allen of Seaford and Chris Allen of Grapevine, Texas; two daughters, Jana Maddox and Sharon Mulford, both of Seaford; a brother, Edward Hurley of Spartanburg, S.C.; a sister, Frances Ryan of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service will be noon Monday at Cranston Funeral Home, 300 Shipley St., Seaford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Hilda Mae Gardley, 71
SMYRNA - Hilda Mae Gardley of Smyrna died, after a lengthy illness, Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 71.
Mrs. Gardley was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Smyrna, daughter of the late Elzie and Helen Barrett.
She was educated in the Smyrna public school system and the Delaware State College High School for Colored Students.
Mrs. Gardley served a stint in the U.S. Army, receiving awards for good conduct and the National Defense Service Medal.
Upon her return to Delaware, she was employed at Dover Air Force Base and at General Foods.
Mrs. Gardley was joined in holy matrimony to John Gardley; they had three children.
She had a great love for gospel music.
Mrs. Gardley was a member of the American Legion, helped organize the first Head Start program in Smyrna and served on the board of the Adult Education Program. In her early adult life, she was a member of the choir at Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she attended Sunday school.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Yoland Crossman, Janear Gardley, Sherry Gardley and John Gardley Jr. all of Smyrna; a sister, Priscilla Haith of Stamford, Conn.; two aunts, Sarah Brashears of Wilmington and Lola Swiggett of Smyrna; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Crossman; three brothers-in-law, Morris Haith, Edward Fountain and Raymond Gardley; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Fountain; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including two very special friends, Elizabeth Wallace and Anna Marie Evans.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
