Walter James Donovan Jr., 79
LEWES - Walter James Donovan Jr. of Lewes died, after a long illness, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. He was 79.
Mr. Donovan was born April 30, 1923, in Lewes, son of the late Fanny Prettyman and Walter Donovan Sr.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Donovan was a Lewes postal employee from 1962 until his retirement in 1990.
He enjoyed flea markets, and was best known as The Flag Man.
Mr. Donovan was the oldest member of the American Legion 17, Lewes and the Jefferson Lodge 15 AF&AM, Lewes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Warrington Donovan, in December 1997.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Pat Donovan of Lewes; a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Hester and Robert E. Dymond of Newport News, Va.; five nephews, Tom Donovan of Brewster, N.Y., Keith Donovan of Middletown, Robert and Ronald Dymond, both of Newport News; and James Warrington of Florida; three nieces, Karen Donovan Markovic of Crofton, Md., Patricia Eakle of Lewes and Helen Boudreaux of Florida.
Friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday in Parsell Funeral Homes, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Henlopen Memorial Park, Del. 1, near Milton, where there will be military honors. The Rev. Charles Moyer will officiate.

Brockaya Nikeysha Hill, stillborn
LAUREL - Brockaya Nikeysha Hill was born and died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was stillborn.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jersel Norman.
She is survived by her parents, Tricianette N. Hill and Brock A. Hill; a sister, Samyia Bailey of Laurel; her grandparents, Naomi Jane Armstrong and Thomas Armstrong Jr. of Seaford and Augustina and Tony Magee of Salisbury, Md., and Troy Hill of Washington, D.C.; great-grandparents, great-aunts, great-uncles, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends and family.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Seaford.
Burial will be in the Middleford Cemetery, Seaford (Concord).

Robert Franklin Johnson, 86
WYOMING - Robert Franklin Johnson of Wyoming died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in the Green Valley Pavilion Nursing Home in Smyrna. He was 86.
Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 8, 1915, son of the late Charles and Mary Johnson.
He was united in holy matrimony to the late Marie Corrine Gibbs Johnson and from this union, eight children were born.
He was employed at Gilof's Poultry Farm for 16 years. He later moved to Willow Grove, where he was employed by Webb's Farm until his retirement. He was considered a hard worker and a great provider for his family.
He enjoyed baseball, hunting, horseshoes and gardening.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, William E. Johnson; a grandson, William Little Jr.; a great-grandson, Ronald Johnson III; three brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by seven children and their spouses, Lee and Francina Johnson and Robert and Shirley Johnson, all of Wilmington, Mary and Vernon Watson of Wyoming, Estella and Melvin Watson and Ronald and Frances Johnson, all of Felton, Sarah Johnson of Dover, and Sylvia Fuller of Frederica; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 25 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and two special children that he loved as his own, Minister Brenda McCovi of Dover, and Larry (Dobie) Stevens of Swell, N. J., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be noon Saturday in the Bibleway Temple Church of God in Christ, 56 S. Kirkwood St., Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Marydel, Md.

Genevieve M. Metler, 80
HARBESON - Genevieve M. Metler of Harbeson died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 80.
Mrs. Metler was born in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late William J. and Margaret E. Boone Conroy.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Metler was a member of Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Millsboro. She was also a member of the Eastern Sussex County Democratic Club and was formerly an appointed member of the Governor's Commission for Mental Retardation.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Raymond Boyd Metler Sr.; eight children, Helen V. Cervenka of Bowie, Md., Raymond Boyd Metler Jr. of Duncan, S.C., Robert M. Metler of Dunkirk, Md., William J. Metler of Tallahassee, Fla., Charles D. Metler of Huntingtown, Md., James P. Metler of Upper Marlboro, Md., Mary G. Adams and Christopher Metler, both of Harbeson; two sisters, Katherine Ward of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Elizabeth Hurdle of Hollyville; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Edward Street, Georgetown. The Rev. Edmund Coppinger will officiate.
Burial will be in St. George's Church Cemetery, near Angola.

Gregory Lamont 'Greg' Smack, 52
SMYRNA - Gregory Lamont "Greg" Smack of The Green Valley Pavilion, south of Smyrna, and formerly of Bridgeville, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover. He was 52.
Mr. Smack attended the Phyliss Wheatley "Colored School" and graduated from Bridgeville High School.
He was married to the former Gloria Pace in 1971.
He was employed by Artwell in Bridgeville.
Mr. Smack loved to work on lawn mowers and to tinker on cars and anything with a motor. He enjoyed going for long auto rides, performing as a disc jockey and supervising his children when they worked on lawns and in yards.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Smack Worthy.
In addition to his former wife, he is survived by his father, Dewitt Flew, and his stepmother, Clara Flem, both of Bridgeville; four sons, Robbie Smack of Dover, Greg "Spunk" Smack Jr. of Wisconsin, Justin Smack of Seaford and Kuwan Smack of Bridgeville; two daughters, Sonia "Renee" of Georgetown and Dwan of Bridgeville; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Charles H. Worthy of Ellendale, Nolan G. Worthy of The Netherlands and Bryant Worthy of Bridgeville; a sister, Melissa Worthy of Georgetown; his grandmother who raised him as a son after the death of his mother, Minnie K. Smack of Seaford; his stepfather, Charlie Worthy of Bridgeville; five uncles, Walter Smack, Ralph Smack, Donald Smack Sr., Raymond "Big Apple" Smack and Michael "Mookie" Smack; five aunts, Susie Perry, Frances Smack, Willa Margaret Smack, Sharon Smack and Cynthia Smack; two special friends, John Teagle and Tom Cannon; and a host of other relatives an friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Williams Chapel Church, North Cannon Street in Bridgeville, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Ida Elizabeth Spurry, 74
LAUREL - Ida Elizabeth Spurry of Laurel died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in Chancellor Care Center in Delmar. She was 74.
Mrs. Spurry was born in Seaford, daughter of the late William Bedsworth and Lottie Hastings.
She retired from the Sussex West Drive Inn in Laurel, where she was a concession manager. She worked at the Route 13 Market in Laurel for 10 years. She worked in the deli at the Shore Stops in Laurel and Bridgeville. She and her husband grew chickens in Trappe, Md., and Laurel for many years.
Mrs. Spurry enjoyed crocheting and watching western movies.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Spurry; and a son, Richard Greene.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Maxine and Jerry Lynch of Laurel, Cheryl Workman of Laurel and Diana and Dennis Gebers of Nebraska; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Harry and Judy Greene of Arizona, Fred and Annie Ross of Parsonsburg, Md., and Robert Green of Pasadena, Md.; six brothers and sisters; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; Bruce Hill of Laurel, who was like a son to her; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Short Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Kevin E. English will officiate.
Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Laurel.

Volita E. Storey, 97
MILFORD - Volita E. Storey of Milford, formerly of Magnolia, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in Genesis Eldercare Milford Center. She was 97.
Mrs. Storey was born March 5, 1905, in Dover, daughter of the late Leonard Rash and Laura Wilson Rash.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Martin I. Storey, in 1959; and a son, Martin L. "Bud" Storey, in 2002.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Denney of Magnolia; a granddaughter, Lisa A. Virdin; a grandson, James E. Storey; and three great-grandchildren, Martin Storey, John R. Virdin and Ryan Storey.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Charles Allen Delp Sr., 65
PORT DEPOSIT, Md. - Charles Allen Delp Sr. of Port Deposit died Friday, May 9, 2003, in his home. He was 65.
Mr. Delp was born May 14, 1937, in Delta, Pa., son of the late Eve Mae Puegh Delp Richardson and Carl Jefferson Delp Sr.
He was a Korean War veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957.
He moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland in 1962, where he was the president of Charles A. Delp Manholes and Masonry Construction Inc.
He moved to the Eastern Shore in 1974, where he owned a custom combining and masonry business. He also was the owner/operator of his own tractor-trailer.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was taking music lessons a the time of his death.
Mr. Delp was a member of the American Legion Post 29, Denton, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 14000 and the North American Hunting Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Orpha (Kiser) Delp on Nov. 23, 1998. They were married on Nov. 30, 1957.
He is survived by a son, Charles A. Delp Jr. of Henderson; two daughters, Anita Watson of Henderson and Chanda Delp of Hartly, Del.; four brothers, Carl Delp Jr. of Henderson, Johnny Delp of Winter Haven, Fla., Bobby Delp and Roger Delp, both of Pennsylvania; a sister, Alma P. Baldwin of Hanover, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Yeager, Carrie Ann Yeager, Leslie Ann Yeager, Jessie Lynn Delp, Charles A. Delp III, William Edward Delp, Kelly Nicole Watson and Brian Watson; three great-grandchildren, Lily Mae McNaught, William Nathaniel Willis and Taylor Nichol Collazo.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Fleegle-Helfenbein Funeral Home P.A., Greensboro.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock.

Myrtle C. Hawk, 73
MILTON - Myrtle C. Hawk of Milton, formerly of Downingtown, Pa., passed away Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 73.
Mrs. Hawk was born March 7, 1930, in Lower Merion Township, Pa., daughter of the late John and Anna Smith Harbison.
She graduated from Radnor High School in 1948.
She was employed by the Apple Basket Gift Shop and by Dr. Eric Schneider before retiring to Delaware.
Mrs. Hawk enjoyed being with her family and friends and her cat and dog. She liked gardening and antique collecting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Norman L. Hawk, in 1998 and a brother, Jack Harbison.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Steven Hawk; two grandchildren, Stephen and Shannon; a sister, Jeannette Erskin of Mohnton, Pa. and a cousin, Joan Bachman of Rehoboth Beach.
Services and burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made in her memory to the Beebe Medical Center, Lewes or to a charity of choice.

Elva S. Short, 80
MILLSBORO - Elva S. Short of Millsboro died Sunday, May 11, 2003, surrounded by her family. She was 80.
Mrs. Short retired from Sterwin Laboratories in 1983.
She was a member of the Oak Orchard Community Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Chapter 7422. She was also a charter member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Pearl F. Spicer; her husband, Charles W. Short Jr., and a brother, Lawrence C. Spicer.
She is survived by two children and their spouses, Charlene S. and George Roger Calhoun of Georgetown and Charles K. and Mary Jane Short of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Daryl R. Calhoun of Yorktown, Va., and Charles J. Short and Lana F. Short, both of Millsboro; and three great-grandchildren, Haley and Ashlyn Calhoun and Amber Wilson.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Georgetown.

James C. Truax, 84
SMYRNA - James C. Truax of Smyrna died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Capitol Health Center, Dover. He was 84.
Mr. Truax was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Smyrna, son of the late James S. and Margaret Jones Truax.
He was a Class of 1938 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School in Smyrna.
Mr. Truax was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and participated in the Italian campaign, Anzio and North Africa.
He worked as the manager for Diamond Supply Company in Smyrna for 25 years and retired from the town of Smyrna after 10 years of service.
Mr. Truax had been a member of Citizens Hose Company 1 since 1940 and was a past chief, past president and special life member. He served on the board of directors for several years. He also served on many county and state fire associations and helped organize the training program for firefighters and was its first instructor before the Delaware State Fire School opened. He also was the first volunteer Fire Marshall in the State of Delaware.
Mr. Truax was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8801 annd the American Legion David C. Harrison Post 14, both in Smyrna, a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna and was active in the Kent County Democratic Party.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J. Fletcher Truax and a sister, Gladys T. Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Scott Truax; a son, David J. Truax of Dover; and a sister, Jeanne T. Carson of Smyrna.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street, Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Joseph T. Tyndall, 82
SEAFORD - Joseph T. Tyndall of Seaford died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. He was 82.
Mr. Tyndall graduated from Georgetown High School, enlisted in the Naval Reserves, transferred to the ROTC program at the University of Delaware, attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, then graduated from the University of Delaware, from which he received degrees in both civil engineering and electrical engineering.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Tyndall was a civil engineer for the Delaware State Highway Department, the Eighth Air Force Headquarters at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass., and the Veterans Administration in Martinsburg, W.Va., retiring in 1983.
Mr. Tyndall was a member of the American Legion, Hiram Lodge 21, AF&AM, Seaford, Hope Chapter, Joppa Council, Delaware Consistory, Nur Temple (charter member) and was a lifetime member of the "Top of the World Masonic Club," Thule, Greenland.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Agnes Cordrey Tyndall; a son, Gary C. Tyndall of Fairbanks, Alaska; a daughter, Sharon Tyndall of West Lebanon, N.H.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford, with Masonic Services at 1:45 p.m., where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Asbury Church Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations to Delaware Hospice Inc., 600 S. Du Pont Hwy, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Anita F. Baynard
DOVER - Anita F. Baynard of Dover died Friday, May 11, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Baynard was the daughter of the late Medford B. and Florence Scotten Ford.
She was a lifelong resident of the Dover area.
She graduated from Dover High School and studied music for several years at Wesley Junior College.
She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, loving her home and family farm. During her lifetime she enthusiastically joined her husband and daughter in their hobbies, including horses and bird dogs.
Mrs. Baynard was a lifelong member of Peoples United Church of Christ, Dover. For many years she was chairman of her church circle. She also was a member of the Dover Century Club for more than 50 years, and was chairman of their literature group. She was a past member of the Sprig & Twig Garden Club in Dover and the Middletown/Odessa Club, and for several years was co-chair of flower arrangements for homes on Old Dover Days.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph C. Baynard Jr., in 1973.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha Ellen Baynard of Dover; a sister, Marian Smith of Dover; three nieces, Janet Custis of Dover, Joanne Baynard of Easton, Md., and Jean Webb of Kent Narrows, Md.; a nephew, R. Sherman Baynard of Centreville, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Baynard of Easton.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover,
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Ettie Virginia Hair, 93
MILLVILLE - Ettie Virginia Hair of Millville, formerly of Spencer, N.C., died Friday, May 11, 2001, in the Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. She was 93.
Mrs. Hair was born in Roebuck, S.C., daughter of the late Clayton T. and Isabelle Riddle Caldwell.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Spencer, and was a past president of the Spencer Schools PTA in Spencer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayward H. Hair, in 1970; and a son, Hayne C. Hair, in 1983.
She is survived by a son, Ralph H. Hair of Salisbury, N.C.; a daughter, Juanita H. Cole of Millville, six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Service and burial will be Wednesday in Salisbury, N.C.

Dora Ann Jones, 69
HARRINGTON - Dora Ann Jones of Harrington died of cancer Friday, May 11, 2001, in her home. She was 69.
Mrs. Jones was the owner/operator of A.J.'s Ceramics Shop with her husband for more than 20 years. She was also a dog breeder.
She will be remembered as a devoted mother and military wife.
Mrs. Jones enjoyed ceramics, crafts and gardening.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Shoemaker, in 1989.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Alvin L. Jones; three sons, Alex Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., David Jones of Harrington and Alvin Jones of Greensboro, Md.; a daughter, Helen Breeding of Seaford; a brother, Edgar Wall of Santa Clara, Calif.; her twin sister, Nora Sorber of Felton; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Price Funeral Home in Harrington.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Harrington Baptist Church, Liberty Street in Harrington.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
