He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR races and country music, and having pool parties when he had a swimming pool. He was a very witty man. He could always come up with a quip in any situation to make people laugh. He was a man with many talents: he built houses and garages, could do plumbing and electrical work and was a master of anything he did, which was only the best. He did not settle for "good enough."
Friends and family often called upon him for his opinion about how to do something. He gave generously of his time, and if needed, even money. He never overcharged for anything he did for anyone. He spent many happy hours in his shop, working with his step-granddaughter making things. He enjoyed teaching her how to use his tools and equipment.
After retiring from Chesapeake, he started a lawn-mowing service. He gave up the business in July after starting chemotherapy. He and his wife took care of his parents and his father-in-law until their passing. He had some disappointments in his life, but didn't dwell on them. His creed was "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
