Willard P. Carmichael
Mr. Willard P. Carmichael of Steinhatchee passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004 at his home. He was 89.
Mr. Carmichael was born and raised in Dowling Park. He then moved to Central Florida where he married Evelyn Brown in 1937. Near the end of World War II, he served the United States Navy and then later lived in Auberndale. He later moved back to Dowling Park and then to Perry, FL where he owned and operated the Family Shoe Store and shoe repair service. He was elected and served as City Mayor and City Judge from 1957 through 1960. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perry, served as an executive in the local Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. At his retirement, he moved to Steinhatchee where he enjoyed fishing, and visiting with is cronies.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Brown Carmichael, two daughters, Gayle Bowdoin of Lexington, SC and Paula Parker of Lilburn, GA; sons, Lamar Carmichael of High Springs and Richard J. Carmichael of Steinhatchee; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 2:00pm at the Fellowship Baptist Church, Steinhatchee, FL with Rev. Ron Coward officiating. Burial followed at Waters Memorial Cemetery. A visitation was held Monday, April 26, 2004 between the hours of 6 and 8 pm at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home, Cross City, Florida.

Juanita Coleman
Mrs. Juanita Coleman, 79, passed away on April 23, 2004, at her home in Cross City, after an extended illness. Mrs. Coleman has been a resident of Dixie County since 1986. She was a homemaker and restaurant manager for many years before retiring to Cross City. Mrs. Coleman was of the Baptist faith, former Sunday School teacher and member of Liberty Baptist Church in Douglasville, Georgia. She later attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cross City.
She is survived by her first husband, Fred Little of Villa Rica, GA; daughters, Diane Blitch of Cross City, Fredda Drake of Douglasville, GA and Amanda Kato of Temple, GA; brother, Henley Vansant of Powder Springs, GA. She has 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Coleman and granddaughter, Rena Payton.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 25, 2004 at 3:00pm at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Lamar Parsons and Jack Kato officiating. Burial followed at the Cross City Cemetery. A visitation was held on Saturday, April 24, 2004 between the hours of 6:00-8:00pm at the Funeral Home.
Arrangements were under the direction of Rick Gooding Funeral Home, Cross City, (352) 498-5400.

Florence Lanier Simmons
Mrs. Florence Lanier Simmons passed away at her home in Old Town, FL, on April 23, 2004. She was 86 years of age. Born in Bell, FL on September 30, 1917, Mrs. Simmons lived in the Tri-County area all but 20 years of her life where she lived in Hawthorne. She was a homemaker and a mother and a member of the First Assembly of God in Cross City, FL.
Mrs. Simmons is survived by four daughters, Patsy Durrance of Thomasville, GA,
Betty Owen of Chiefland, FL, Connie Barlow of Old Town, FL, and Judy Langford of Alachua, FL; four sons, Buddy Lanier of McClenny, FL, Jimmy Lanier of Hawthorne, FL, Johnny Lanier of Cross City, FL and Ronnie Lanier of Horseshoe Beach, FL. She has 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 11:00am at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Butler and Rev. Marvin Parsley officiating. Burial followed at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. A visitation was held on Sunday, April 25, 2004 between the hours of 4:00-6:00pm.
Arrangements were under the care of Rick Gooding Funeral Home, Cross City, (352) 498-5400.

Carl Clifton Hayes, Sr.
Mr. Carl Clifton Hayes, Sr. passed away Thursday, February 8, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville. He was 73 years old. Born in Lexington, KY, Mr. Hayes moved to Cross City 30 years ago from Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a Korean War Veteran and retiree of the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by sons, Carl Clifton Hayes, Jr. and Richard Hayes both of Corpus Christi, Texas; sister, Ada Ives of Georgia; one grand daughter, Miranda Hayes; a niece, Tammy Ives of Wellborn, FL; and care giver, Kelly Carmichael of Cross City, FL.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, May 3, 2004 at the Cross City Cemetery, Cross City, FL with full military honors.
Arrangements are under the care of Moring Funeral Home, Inc., Melrose, FL, 352-475-2201.

James Ellison Bancroft
Mr. James Ellison Bancroft passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at the Suwannee Health Care Center in Live Oak, FL. He was 64 years of age. Mr. Bancroft moved to Live Oak, FL from McAlpin, FL. He retired after 20 years in the US Navy and then served in the Coast Guard Reserves. He was also a member of the Naval Retirement Association and was a Methodist.
Mr. Bancroft is survived by his sister, Julia Squires of Old Town, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Bancroft.

Gladys Weeks McCullough
Gladys Weeks McCullough of Chiefland, Florida passed away, Friday, April 30, 2004 at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Trenton, Florida. She was 78 years of age. She was a homemaker and enjoyed music, reading and embroidering. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.
Ms. McCullough is survived by her daughters, Karen (Kenneth) Braswell of Chiefland, FL, and Kathleen Lamar of Cross City, FL; son, Danny Carter of Cross City, FL; brothers, Sidney Gainey of Cross City, FL, and Marvin Gainey of Michigan. She has eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Monday, May 3, 2003 at Antioch Cemetery in Chiefland, FL with Bro. Ron Cason officiating. A visitation was held on Sunday between the hours of 6-8pm at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services in Chiefland.
Arrangements were under the care of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services in Chiefland, FL, (352) 493-0050.

Freddie Inez Ross
Mrs. Freddie Inez Ross passed away on Friday, April 30, 2004 at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, FL. She was 76 years of age. Mrs. Ross was a lifetime resident of Steinhatchee, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jena.
Mrs. Ross is survived by her sons, Bebo (Shelly) Ross, Tracy (Dottie) Ross, and Lawrence (Helen) Ross, all of Steinhatchee, FL; daughters, Faith (Broward) Reed, and Mary Ross, both of Steinhatchee, FL, and Myra Ross (Larry) Glover of Mayo, FL. She has 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Dink Ross.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Jena, with Rev. Vaughn Farnell officiating. Burial followed at Waters Memorial Cemetery in Steinhatchee. A visitation was held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 between the hours of 6:00-8:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Jena.
Arrangements were under the direction of Rick Gooding Funeral Home, Cross City,FL, (352) 498-5400.
